Evaluation of Ce-MOFs as Photoanode Materials for the Water Oxidation Reaction: The Effect of Doping with [Ru(bpy)(dcbpy)(H2O)2]2+ Catalyst

Artificial photosynthesis stands out as a highly effective method for harnessing sunlight to produce clean and renewable energy. The light-absorbing properties, chemical stability, and high redox activity of Ce-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) make them attractive materials for visible-light-driven water splitting. Currently, Ce-based MOFs remain a relatively underexplored system for photocatalytic water oxidation in acidic media. In this study, we synthesized a Ce-MOF with different linkers (1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid, tetrafluoroterephthalic acid, 2-nitroterephthalic acid, 2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-dicarboxylic acid, and 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid), which exhibit light-absorbing capability. Ce-based MOFs doped with [Ru(bpy)(dcbpy)(H2O)2]2+ (MOF-1 and MOF-2) water oxidation catalyst showed an enhanced photoelectrocatalytic current of ∼10-4 A·cm-2 at pH = 1, which is comparable with the [Ru(bpy)(dcbpy)(H2O)2]2+-doped MIL-126 Fe-based MOF. We also demonstrated the long-term durability of Ru-doped Ce-MOFs for photoelectrocatalytic water oxidation under acidic conditions. The as-synthesized MOFs were analyzed with powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electric conductivity measurements. This study contributes to the development of cost-effective materials for sustainable photocatalytic water splitting processes.

Photoexcitation of Fe3 O Nodes in MOF Drives Water Oxidation at pH=1 When Ru Catalyst Is Present

Artificial photosynthesis strives to convert the energy of sunlight into sustainable, eco-friendly solar fuels. However, systems with light-driven water oxidation reaction (WOR) at pH=1 are rare. Broadly used [Ru(bpy)₃ ]²⁺ (bpy=2,2'-bipyridine) photosensitizer has a fixed +1.23 V potential which is insufficient to drive most water oxidation catalysts (WOCs) in acid, while Fe₂ O₃ , featuring the highly oxidizing holes, is not stable at low pH. Here, the key examples of Fe-based metal-organic framework (MOF) water oxidation photoelectrocatalysts active at pH=1 are presented. Fe-MIL-126 and Fe MOF-dcbpy structures were formed with 4,4'-biphenyl dicarboxylate (bpdc), 2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-dicarboxylate (dcbpy) linkers and their mixtures. Presence of dcbpy linkers allows integration of metal-based catalysts via coordination to 2,2'-bipyridine fragments. Fe-based MOFs were doped with Ru-based precursors to achieve highly active MOFs bearing [Ru(bpy)(dcbpy)(H₂ O)₂ ]²⁺ WOC. Materials were analyzed with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy, resonance Raman, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, fs optical pump-probe, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), diffuse reflectance and electric conductivity measurements and were modeled by band structure calculations. It is shown that under reaction conditions, Fe^III and Ru^III oxidation states are present, indicating rate-limiting electron transfer in MOF. Fe₃ O nodes emerge as photosensitizers able to drive prolonged O₂ evolution in acid. Further developments are possible via MOF's linker modification for enhanced light absorption, electrical conductivity, reduced MOF solubility in acid, Ru-WOC modification for faster WOC catalysis, or Ru-WOC substitution to 3d metal-based systems. The findings give further insight for development of light-driven water splitting systems based on Earth-abundant metals.

Metal-Organic Frameworks as Photocatalysts for Solar-Driven Overall Water Splitting

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been frequently used as photocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) using sacrificial agents with UV-vis or visible light irradiation. The aim of the present review is to summarize the use of MOFs as solar-driven photocatalysts targeting to overcome the current efficiency limitations in overall water splitting (OWS). Initially, the fundamentals of the photocatalytic OWS under solar irradiation are presented. Then, the different strategies that can be implemented on MOFs to adapt them for solar photocatalysis for OWS are discussed in detail. Later, the most active MOFs reported until now for the solar-driven HER and/or oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are critically commented. These studies are taken as precedents for the discussion of the existing studies on the use of MOFs as photocatalysts for the OWS under visible or sunlight irradiation. The requirements to be met to use MOFs at large scale for the solar-driven OWS are also discussed. The last section of this review provides a summary of the current state of the field and comments on future prospects that could bring MOFs closer to commercial application.

Lewis acid protection turns cyanide containing [FeFe]-hydrogenase mimics into proton reduction catalysts

Sustainable sources of hydrogen are a vital component of the envisioned energy transition. Understanding and mimicking the [FeFe]-hydrogenase provides a route to achieving this goal. In this study we re-visit a molecular mimic of the hydrogenase, the propyl dithiolate bridged complex [Fe₂(μ-pdt)(CO)₄(CN)₂]²⁻, in which the cyanide ligands are tuned via Lewis acid interactions. This system provides a rare example of a cyanide containing [FeFe]-hydrogenase mimic capable of catalytic proton reduction, as demonstrated by cyclic voltammetry. EPR, FTIR, UV-vis and X-ray absorption spectroscopy are employed to characterize the species produced by protonation, and reduction or oxidation of the complex. The results reveal that biologically relevant iron-oxidation states can be generated, potentially including short-lived mixed valent Fe(i)Fe(ii) species. We propose that catalysis is initiated by protonation of the diiron complex and the resulting di-ferrous bridging hydride species can subsequently follow two different pathways to promote H₂ gas formation depending on the applied reduction potential.

Mimicking the hydrogen-bonding interactions of the [FeFe]-hydrogenase active-site using Lewis acids transforms an otherwise unstable cyanide containing hydrogenase mimic into a proton reduction catalyst.

Metal-Organic Frameworks as a Versatile Materials Platform for Unlocking New Potentials in Biocatalysis

Biocatalysts immobilization with nanomaterials has promoted the development of biocatalysis significantly and made it an indispensable part of catalysis industries nowadays. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), constructed from organic linkers and metal ions or clusters, have raised significant interests for biocatalysts immobilization in recent years. The diversity of building units, molecular-scale tunability, and modular synthetic routes of MOFs greatly expand its ability as the host to integrate with biocatalysts. In this review, the general synthetic strategies of MOFs with biocatalysts are first summarized. Then, the recent progress of MOFs as a versatile host for a series of biocatalysts, including natural enzymes, nanozymes, and organism-based biocatalysts, followed by the introduction of MOFs themselves as biocatalysts, is discussed. Furthermore, the stimuli-responsive properties of MOFs themselves or the additional functionalization of protein, polymer, and peptide within/on MOF that enable the biocatalysts with the controllable and tunable behavior are also summarized, which could unlock new potentials in biocatalysis. Finally, a perspective of the upcoming challenges, potential impacts, and future directions of biocatalytic MOFs is provided.

Facile Orientational Control of M2L2P SURMOFs on ⟨100⟩ Silicon Substrates and Growth Mechanism Insights for Defective MOFs

Layer-by-layer growth of Cu₂(bdc)₂(dabco) surface-mounted metal-organic frameworks (SURMOFs) was investigated on silicon wafers treated with different surface anchoring molecules. Well-oriented growth along the [100] and [001] directions could be achieved with simple protocols: growth along the [100] direction was achieved by substrate pretreatment with 80 °C piranha, while growth along the [001] direction was enabled by only rinsing silicon with absolute ethanol. Growth along the [001] direction produced more homogeneous SURMOF films. Optimization to enhance [001]-preferred orientation growth revealed that small changes in the SURMOF growth sequence (the number of rinse steps and linker concentrations) have a noticeable impact on the final film quality and the number of misaligned crystals. This new straightforward protocol was used to successfully grow other layer pillar-type SURMOFs, including the growth of Cu₂(bdc)₂(bipy) with simultaneous suppression of framework interpenetration.

Metal-Organic Frameworks for Hydrogen Energy Applications: Advances and Challenges

Hydrogen is in limelight as an environmental benign alternative to fossil fuels from few decades. To bring the concept of hydrogen economy from academic labs to real world certain challenges need to be addressed in the areas of hydrogen production, storage, and its use in fuel cells. Crystalline metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with unprecedented surface areas are considered as potential materials for addressing the challenges in each of these three areas. MOFs combine the diverse chemistry of molecular linkers with their ability to coordinate to metal ions and clusters. The unabated flurry of research using MOFs in the context of hydrogen energy related activities in the past decade demonstrates the versatility of this class of materials. In the present review, we discuss major strategical advances that have taken place in the field of "hydrogen economy and MOFs" and point out issues requiring further attention.

Mixed-Ligand Metal-Organic Frameworks and Heteroleptic Coordination Cages as Multifunctional Scaffolds-A Comparison

Porous nanostructures and materials based on metal-mediated self-assembly have developed into a vibrantly studied subdiscipline of supramolecular chemistry during the past decades. In principle, two branches of such coordination compounds can be distinguished: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) on the one side represent infinite porous networks of metals or metal clusters that are connected via organic ligands to give solid-state materials. On the other hand, metal-organic cages (MOCs) are discrete and soluble systems with only a limited number of pores. Formation of a particular structure type is achieved by carefully balancing the donor site angles within the ligands as well as the nature and coordination geometry of the metal component. Years of research on MOFs and MOCs has yielded numerous types of well-defined porous crystals and complex supramolecular architectures. Since various synthetic routes and postsynthetic modification methods have been established, the focus of recent developments has moved toward the preparation of multifunctional systems that are able to mimic the structural and functional complexity of natural enzymes. This Account compares different strategies to prepare multifunctional MOFs and heteroleptic MOCs and gives a perspective on where to move forward. While the preparative toolbox for multifunctional MOFs is already quite mature, pore accessibility and substrate diffusion within the crystal have been identified as major challenges yet to be overcome. Only recently have a set of different strategies for the assembly of heteroleptic MOCs been developed. Such multifunctional cages can be formed from either partially protected or "naked" metal cations. Controlled assembly, producing single products rather than statistical mixtures, leans on assembly-dependent approaches making use of either steric effects or shape complementarity between the ligands. Further strategies include coordination-site engineering and hierarchical assembly of preformed components. The main challenge with heteroleptic, functional MOCs is to find a balance between the required dynamic assembly fidelity and the stability of the resulting system under operating conditions. If these limitations can be overcome in the future, chemists will be able to design multifunctional systems of similar activity and complexity as nature's enzymes from simple and easily accessible synthetic building blocks. Major impacts on chemical sensing, small-molecule recognition and sequestration, drug delivery, and catalysis will be achieved by these materials.

A 2,2'-bipyridine-containing covalent organic framework bearing rhenium(i) tricarbonyl moieties for CO2 reduction

The reduction of CO2 into higher energy products such as carbon-based fuels and feedstocks is an attractive strategy for mitigating the continuous rise in CO2 emissions associated with the growing global energy demand. Rhenium tricarbonyl complexes bearing 2,2'-bipyridine (2,2'-bpy) ligands are well-established molecular electrocatalysts for the selective reduction of CO2 to CO. Construction of efficient devices for this electrochemical process requires the immobilization of electrocatalysts to electrode surfaces. To integrate Re(2,2'-bpy)(CO)3 fragments into a covalent organic framework (COF), Re(5,5'-diamine-2,2'-bpy)(CO)3Cl (1) was synthesized and electrochemically investigated. Complex 1 is an active and selective electrocatalyst for the reduction of CO2 to CO with excellent faradaic efficiency (99%). The presence of the amine substituents leads to a destabilization of the π* orbital of the 5,5'-diamine-2,2'-bpy ligand with respect to the metal center. Therefore, 1 requires more negative potentials (-2.47 V vs. Fc+/0) to reach the doubly reduced catalytically active species. DFT studies were conducted to understand the electronic structure of 1, and support the destabilizing effect of the amine substituents. The Re-2,2'-bpy fragments were successfully integrated into a COF containing 2,2'-bpy moieties (COF-2,2'-bpy) via a post-metallation synthetic route to generate COF-2,2'-bpy-Re. A composite of COF-2,2'-bpy-Re, carbon black, and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was readily immobilized onto glassy carbon electrodes and electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to CO was observed at -2.8 V vs. Fc0/+, with a faradaic efficiency of 81% for CO production.

From protein engineering to artificial enzymes - biological and biomimetic approaches towards sustainable hydrogen production

Hydrogen gas is used extensively in industry today and is often put forward as a suitable energy carrier due its high energy density. Currently, the main source of molecular hydrogen is fossil fuels via steam reforming. Consequently, novel production methods are required to improve the sustainability of hydrogen gas for industrial processes, as well as paving the way for its implementation as a future solar fuel. Nature has already developed an elaborate hydrogen economy, where the production and consumption of hydrogen gas is catalysed by hydrogenase enzymes. In this review we summarize efforts on engineering and optimizing these enzymes for biological hydrogen gas production, with an emphasis on their inorganic cofactors. Moreover, we will describe how our understanding of these enzymes has been applied for the preparation of bio-inspired/-mimetic systems for efficient and sustainable hydrogen production.

Facile preparation of magnetic metal organic frameworks core-shell nanoparticles for stimuli-responsive drug carrier

Facile synthesis of core-shell magnetic MOFs for drug delivery is of significance due to the advantages of high drug load and easy separation. In this work, magnetic metal organic frameworks (MOFs, Fe₃O₄-NH₂@MIL101-NH₂) core-shell nanoparticles were synthesized rapidly in water phase by microwave irradiation using Fe³⁺ and 2-amino-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (BDC-NH₂) as metal ions and ligands respectively. The resulting magnetic MOFs exhibit large surface areas (96.04 m² g^-1), excellent magnetic response (20.47 emu g^-1) and large mesopore volume (22.07 cm³ g^-1) along with spherical morphologies with the diameters ranging from 140-330 nm. Using doxorubicin (DOX) as a model drug, the drug loading capacity of Fe₃O₄-NH₂@MIL101-NH₂ could reach 36.02%, substantially higher than pristine MIL101-NH₂. Importantly, the release of DOX could be controlled by pH as well as the meso pore size of MOFs. The cytotoxicity assay showed that the magnetic MOFs have low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility. The results suggest great potential of the magnetic MOFs core-shell nanoparticles fabricated in this study on controlled drug release of DOX.
