Synthesis and Application of Novel Nano Fe-BTC/GO Composites as Highly Efficient Photocatalysts in the Dye Degradation

CuBTC Metal-Organic Framework Decorated with FeBTC Nanoparticles with Enhance Water Stability for Environmental Remediation Applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on Cu-benzene tricarboxylate (CuBTC) are widely used for gas storage and removal applications. However, they readily lose their crystal structures under humid conditions, limiting their practical applications. This structural decomposition reduces the specific surface area, gas adsorption capability, and recyclability of CuBTC considerably. In this study, a stable MOF against water exposure was designed based on FeBTC nanoparticle-covered CuBTC (FeCuBTC). A simple one-pot solvothermal process that enables the epitaxial growth of FeBTC on the CuBTC surface was proposed. Structural and morphological analyses after water exposure revealed that the water stability of FeCuBTC was better than that of CuBTC, which completely lost its crystallinity. This observed improvement in the water stability of the synthesized MOF proved to be beneficial for the adsorption of formaldehyde under humid conditions. The proposed strategy herein is simple yet highly effective in the design of hetero-bimetallic MOFs with considerably improved water resistance and extended applicability for environmental remediation processes.

Graphene-Based Metal-Organic Framework Hybrids for Applications in Catalysis, Environmental, and Energy Technologies

Current energy and environmental challenges demand the development and design of multifunctional porous materials with tunable properties for catalysis, water purification, and energy conversion and storage. Because of their amenability to de novo reticular chemistry, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have become key materials in this area. However, their usefulness is often limited by low chemical stability, conductivity and inappropriate pore sizes. Conductive two-dimensional (2D) materials with robust structural skeletons and/or functionalized surfaces can form stabilizing interactions with MOF components, enabling the fabrication of MOF nanocomposites with tunable pore characteristics. Graphene and its functional derivatives are the largest class of 2D materials and possess remarkable compositional versatility, structural diversity, and controllable surface chemistry. Here, we critically review current knowledge concerning the growth, structure, and properties of graphene derivatives, MOFs, and their graphene@MOF composites as well as the associated structure-property-performance relationships. Synthetic strategies for preparing graphene@MOF composites and tuning their properties are also comprehensively reviewed together with their applications in gas storage/separation, water purification, catalysis (organo-, electro-, and photocatalysis), and electrochemical energy storage and conversion. Current challenges in the development of graphene@MOF hybrids and their practical applications are addressed, revealing areas for future investigation. We hope that this review will inspire further exploration of new graphene@MOF hybrids for energy, electronic, biomedical, and photocatalysis applications as well as studies on previously unreported properties of known hybrids to reveal potential "diamonds in the rough".

A novel bimetallic MOFs combined with gold nanoflakes in electrochemical sensor for measuring bisphenol A

In this paper, a novel bimetallic Fe-Cu metal-organic framework combined with 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (Fe-Cu-BTC) are synthesized using hydrothermal reaction. The bimetallic Fe-Cu-BTC with high BET (1504 cm³ g^-1) and high Langmuir surface area (1831 cm³ g^-1) is composited by gold nanoparticles to improve the conductivity and to develop their synergistic effect. A novel bisphenol A (BPA) sensor was prepared by dropcasting Fe-Cu-BTC on glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) followed by AuNPs electrodeposition. The Fe-Cu-BTC framework were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy studies (TEM), FT-IR, BET measurements and EDX spectra. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were carried out for surveying the electrochemical properties of the sensors and for the quantification of BPA. Two linear ranges of BPA concentrations 0.1-1.0 μM and 1.0-18 μM with 18 nM limit of detection were obtained. The developed sensor was used to measure the concentration of BPA in samples extracted from rain coat with the recovery ranging from 85.70 to 103.23%.

A novel route to the synthesis of α-Fe2O3@C@SiO2/TiO2 nanocomposite from the metal-organic framework as a photocatalyst for water treatment

In this study, an attempt was made to synthesize metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based magnetic iron particles as photocatalysts for textile dye wastewater. Improvement strategy was a novel two-step dry method without using conventional methods to eliminate the consumption of chemical reagents. First, the heterogeneous photocatalyst of Fe-MOFs derived magnetic carbon nanocomposite with carboxylic acid surface functional groups (Fe@C-COOH) was achieved. Next, the α-Fe₂O₃@C@SiO₂/TiO₂ was successfully synthesized followed by a sol-gel method to coat the SiO₂ shell and a solvothermal method to coat the surface of the intermediate TiO₂ particles. The as-synthesized nanocomposite materials were characterized and physicochemical analytical equipment. Further, the investigation on magnetic photocatalytic nanocomposite α-Fe₂O₃@C@SiO₂/TiO₂ performance of dye degradation and photocatalytic activity on Reactive yellow 145 (RY145), using as an indicator was conducted. The as-synthesized nanocomposite particles were characterized using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The structural characterization of the as-synthesized materials proved that these methods generate oxygen-containing functional groups, such as, -OH, -CO, and -COOH, which increases the polarity and hydrophilicity of the photocatalyst. The photocatalytic oxidation of RY145 dye under UVc light was discussed by the apparent first-order reaction rate and the kinetic model of the Langmuir-Hinshelwood followed a better fitting. The optimal performance of the composite is at pH = 2, 15 mg/100 mL of photocatalyst dose, 150 mg/L concentration of the dye RY145 at 25 °C temperature under UVc lamp irradiation for 90 min, and with the apparent reaction rate constant was 0.0165 min^-1. The thermodynamic analysis of activation parameters computed by the Eyring model and based on transition state theory (TST), an endothermic reaction with a positive value for Δ^‡H^o (50.16 kJ mol^-1) and a negative value for Δ^‡S^o (-153 J/mol K) both contribute toward achieving positive values for Δ^‡G^o and a nonspontaneous process. The proposed α-Fe₂O₃@C@SiO₂/TiO₂ demonstrated a high capability of photocatalytic degradation up to 97% after five successive cycles at the optimal condition compared to that of Fe₃O₄@C (18.74%) and Fe@C-COOH (77.9%) without reusability.

Advancements in visible light responsive MOF composites for photocatalytic decontamination of textile wastewater: A review

Heterogeneous photocatalysis using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is expected to provide a pivotal solution for the remediation of toxic dyes and heavy metals from textile wastewater. However, MOFs often suffer from a low removal efficiency, due to the rapid recombination between holes and electrons, generated upon photoexcitation. Additionally, the MOFs exhibit poor water stability, which restricts their large-scale application. In this regard, various approaches (i.e. doping of metal nanoparticle, semiconductor, quantum dot, and ligand functionalization) have been adopted for the formation of multifunctional composites. The MOF-composites possess suitable photochemical, surface, optical, and electronic properties, resulting in enhanced water stability, visible light absorption, and reduced recombination between photogenerated species. This comprehensive review targets to provide an insight into the synthesis and subsequent application of various MOF composites for photocatalytic removal of organic contaminants (dyes) and inorganic (Cr(VI)) contaminants from water. MOFs/graphene oxide composites possess improved surface area and reusability whereas noble metal incorporated MOFs composites suffer from photocorrosion and are relatively costly. Zr and Ti based MOFs exhibit tuning from UV to visible light response and surpass the poor water stability upon binary/ternary composite formation. The role of the dopants in enhancing the efficiency of the composites; the effect of influencing factors such as solution pH, pollutant concentration; the mechanism, and the kinetics of reactions have been outlined. In spite of many advancements, the article also summarizes some roadblocks that need to be unraveled to achieve the energy-water-environment nexus and scope for future breakthrough research in this field.

Selective Removal of Phenolic Compounds by Peroxydisulfate Activation: Inherent Role of Hydrophobicity and Interface ROS

Selective removal of organic pollutants by advanced oxidation methods has been receiving increasing attention for environmental remediation. In this study, a novel catalyst, which can selectively oxidize phenolic compounds (PCs) based on their hydrophobicity, composed of metal-organic-framework-derived Fe/Fe₃O₄ and three-dimensional reduced graphene oxide (rGOF) is designed for peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation. This heterogeneous PDS activation system can completely degrade hydrophobic PCs within 30 min. By investigating the hydrophobic properties of eight representative PCs, a positive correlation between the hydrophobicity of PC and the reaction kinetics is reported for the first time. The selective removal stems from the strong interaction between highly hydrophobic PCs and the catalyst. Moreover, the mechanism investigation shows that the degradation reaction is triggered by interface reactive oxygen species (ROS). Our study reveals that the selective degradation of organic pollutants by PDS activation depends on the hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties of the pollutant and catalyst. The reported results provide new insights into a highly selective and efficient PDS activation system for organic pollutant removal.

Nickel-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks as Electrocatalysts for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER)

The exploration of earth-abundant electrocatalysts with high performance for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is eminently desirable and remains a significant challenge. The composite of the metal-organic framework (MOF) Ni₁₀Co-BTC (BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) and the highly conductive carbon material ketjenblack (KB) could be easily obtained from the MOF synthesis in the presence of KB in a one-step solvothermal reaction. The composite and the pristine MOF perform better than commercially available Ni/NiO nanoparticles under the same conditions for the OER. Activation of the nickel-cobalt clusters from the MOF can be seen under the applied anodic potential, which steadily boosts the OER performance. Ni₁₀Co-BTC and Ni₁₀Co-BTC/KB are used as sacrificial agents and undergo structural changes during electrochemical measurements, the stabilized materials show good OER performances.

Ultrasonic-Assisted Synthesis of Fe-BTC-PEG Metal-Organic Complex: An Effective and Safety Nanocarrier for Anticancer Drug Delivery

The porous metal-organic complexes are emerging as novel carriers for effective and safe delivery of drugs for cancer treatment, minimizing the side effect of drug overuse during cancer treatment. This study fabricated the Fe-BTC-PEG metal-organic complex from Fe ions, trimesic acid, and poly(ethylene glycol) as precursors using an ultrasonic-assisted method. The morphology and crystallinity of the resultant complex were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. FTIR spectroscopy was employed to investigate the functional groups on the surface of the Fe-BTC-PEG complex. The result showed that the prepared Fe-BTC-PEG complex was in particle form with low crystallinity and diameter ranging from 100 to 200 nm. The obtained Fe-BTC-PEG complex exhibited a high loading capacity for the 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) anticancer drug with a maximal capacity of 364 mg/g. The releasing behavior of 5-fluorouracil from the 5-FU-loaded Fe-BTC-PEG complex was studied. Notably, the acute oral toxicity of the Fe-BTC-PEG metal-organic complex was also carried out to evaluate the safety of the material in practical application.

Bimetallic Ag-Zn-BTC/GO composite as highly efficient photocatalyst in the photocatalytic degradation of reactive yellow 145 dye in water

Ag_x-Zn_100-x-BTC/GO composites (BTC: benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic, GO: graphene oxide) with different Ag/Zn molar ratios were synthesized using microwave-assisted hydrothermal treatment. The Ag_x-Zn_100-x-BTC/GO exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance in the reactive yellow 145 dye (RY-145) degradation under irradiation of visible light with nearly 100% of RY-145 removal after 35 min, as compared to Zn-BTC/GO and Ag-BTC/GO. Reactive oxygen species scavenging assays have shown that the holes (h⁺) and superoxide radical anion (O₂^-•) play a primary role in RY-145 degradation. Based on the band structure of materials, the Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism was suggested. The effect of catalyst dosage, pH and dye concentration on the efficiency of photocatalytic activity of bimetallic Ag₅₀-Zn₅₀-BTC/GO was also investigated. The improvement in photocatalytic activity of bimetallic Ag₅₀-Zn₅₀-BTC/GO could be given by the synergism of (i) absorption of visible light confirmed by UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra; (ii) the increased lifetime as evidenced by photoluminescence spectra and transient photocurrent response; (iii) the increased oxygen vacancy defects as confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results. The degradation pathway of RY-145 dye was also predicted based on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer analysis. The removed chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand, total organic carbon outcomes indicated the high mineralization ability for RY-145 degradation over Ag₅₀-Zn₅₀-BTC/GO.

Heterostructure of vanadium pentoxide and mesoporous SBA-15 derived from natural halloysite for highly efficient photocatalytic oxidative desulphurisation

Integration between conventional semiconductors and porous materials can enhance electron–hole separation, improving photocatalytic activity. Here, we introduce a heterostructure that was successfully constructed between vanadium pentoxide (V₂O₅) and mesoporous SBA-15 using inexpensive halloysite clay as the silica–aluminium source. The composite material with 40% doped V₂O₅ shows excellent catalytic performance in the oxidative desulphurisation of dibenzothiophene (conversion of 99% with only a minor change after four-cycle tests). These results suggest the development of new catalysts made from widely available natural minerals that show high stability and can operate in natural light to produce fuel oils with ultra-low sulphur content.

Improved photodegradation of anionic dyes using a complex graphitic carbon nitride and iron-based metal-organic framework material

Introducing heterostructures to graphitic carbon nitrides (g-C3N4) can improve the activity of visible-light-driven catalysts for the efficient treatment of multiple toxic pollutants in water. Here, we report for the first time that a complex material can be constructed from oxygen-doped g-C3N4 and a MIL-53(Fe) metal-organic framework using facile hydrothermal synthesis and recycled polyethylene terephthalate from plastic waste. The novel multi-walled nanotube structure of the O-g-C3N4/MIL-53(Fe) composite, which enables the unique interfacial charge transfer at the heterojunction, showed an obvious enhancement in the separation efficiency of the photochemical electron-hole pairs. This resulted in a narrow bandgap energy (2.30 eV, compared to 2.55 eV in O-g-C3N4), high photocurrent intensity (0.17 mA cm-2, compared to 0.12 mA cm-2 and 0.09 mA cm-2 in MIL-53(Fe) and O-g-C3N4, respectively) and excellent catalytic performance in the photodegradation of anionic azo dyes (95% for RR 195 and 99% for RY 145 degraded after 4 h, and only a minor change in the efficiency observed after four consecutive tests). These results demonstrate the development of new catalysts made from waste feedstocks that show high stability, ease of fabrication and can operate in natural light for environmental remediation.

Dissolution Enhancement and Controlled Release of Paclitaxel Drug via a Hybrid Nanocarrier Based on mPEG-PCL Amphiphilic Copolymer and Fe-BTC Porous Metal-Organic Framework

In the present work, the porous metal-organic framework (MOF) Basolite®F300 (Fe-BTC) was tested as a potential drug-releasing depot to enhance the solubility of the anticancer drug paclitaxel (PTX) and to prepare controlled release formulations after its encapsulation in amphiphilic methoxy poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(ε-caprolactone) (mPEG-PCL) nanoparticles. Investigation revealed that drug adsorption in Fe-BTC reached approximately 40%, a relatively high level, and also led to an overall drug amorphization as confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The dissolution rate of PTX-loaded MOF was substantially enhanced achieving a complete (100%) release within four days, while the neat drug only reached a 13% maximum rate (3-4 days). This PTX-Fe-BTC nanocomposite was further encapsulated into a mPEG-PCL matrix, a typical aliphatic amphiphilic copolyester synthesized in our lab, whose biocompatibility was validated by in vitro cytotoxicity tests toward human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). Encapsulation was performed according to the solid-in-oil-in-water emulsion/solvent evaporation technique, resulting in nanoparticles of about 143 nm, slightly larger of those prepared without the pre-adsorption of PTX on Fe-BTC (138 nm, respectively). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging revealed that spherical nanoparticles with embedded PTX-loaded Fe-BTC nanoparticles were indeed fabricated, with sizes ranging from 80 to 150 nm. Regions of the composite Fe-BTC-PTX system in the infrared (IR) spectrum are identified as signatures of the drug-MOF interaction. The dissolution profiles of all nanoparticles showed an initial burst release, attributed to the drug amount located at the nanoparticles surface or close to it, followed by a steadily and controlled release. This is corroborated by computational analysis that reveals that PTX attaches effectively to Fe-BTC building blocks, but its relatively large size limits diffusion through crystalline regions of Fe-BTC. The dissolution behaviour can be described through a bimodal diffusivity model. The nanoparticles studied could serve as potential chemotherapeutic candidates for PTX delivery.
