Sex-specific genetic parameter estimates of body weight in Mazandaran indigenous chickens

Body weight is an economically important trait in poultry that shows sexual dimorphism (SD). In the present study, variation in SD in Mazandaran native chickens was investigated in terms of the (Co) variance components and genetic parameters of body weight between males and females. Studied traits were body weights at hatch (BW1), 8 weeks (BW8) and 12 weeks of age (BW12). Also, for weight at sexual maturity (WSM) covariance components were only estimated in females. Cross-sex direct and maternal correlations were also estimated for studied traits except for WSM. For this purpose, a deep 21-generation pedigree and body weight data (57,576 BW1, 72,925 BW8, 62,727 BW12 and, 42,496 WSM) were used. Evaluation of SD of body weight was performed using six bivariate animal models with and without considering the genetic and permanent maternal environmental effects under the restricted maximum likelihood method in WOMBAT software. Model with direct additive genetic effects and maternal genetic effects without covariance between them was identified as the best model for BW1 and BW8. The Model including direct additive genetic effects and permanent maternal environmental effects was the best model for BW12 and WSM. Direct heritability (h2) estimates for BW1, BW8 and, BW12 were, respectively, 0.05 ± 0.013, 0.17 ± 0.02 and, 0.25 ± 0.03 in males and, 0.05 ± 0.012, 0.15 ± 0.01 and 0.21 ± 0.01 in females. Also, the direct heritability of WSM based on univariate analysis in females was estimated to be 0.40 ± 0.01. Maternal heritability (h m 2 ) varied from 0.39 ± 0.01 (BW1) to 0.04 ± 0.009 (BW8) in males, and 0.36 ± 0.10 (BW1) to 0.04 ± 0.006 (BW8) in females. The correlation between direct genetic effects between males and females for BW1 was not significantly different from one. The direct genetic correlation between the two sexes for BW8 and BW12 was significantly different from 1 concluding that these traits are dimorphic in terms of direct genetic effects and therefore independent selection in both sexes is possible.

Genetic and phenotypic parameter estimates for selection within Ugandan indigenous chickens

The high genetic variation within indigenous chickens (IC) which provides an opportunity to select superior stock for sustainable production and conservation is under-exploited. This study is aimed at estimating heritability and genetic and phenotypic correlation coefficients of productive and reproductive traits of Ugandan IC as a basis for selection. Data on traits were collected across two consecutive generations, weight (W) and shank length (SL) of chicks at hatching (HW) as well as at 2 (W2; SL2), 4 (W4; SL4), 6 (W6; SL6), 8 (W8; SL8), and 12 (W12; SL12) weeks of growth. Body weights at onset of lay (WFE) were also measured. In addition, egg number (EN-60), egg weight (EW), clutch number (CLN-60), and clutch size (CLS-60) over a period of 60 days were recorded. Genetic parameters were estimated using the univariate animal model analysis with restricted maximum likelihood procedure using the variability package of R, version 4.1.1. Heritability of traits ranged from 0.30 and 0.72 except SL4 (0.02), SL12 (0.14), and EN-60 (0.17). The traits EN-60 and W4 were negatively phenotypically correlated (- 0.49). Body weight at first egg was highly genetically correlated (0.99) with SL8. Egg number was significantly, negatively, and genetically correlated (- 0.96) with SL12. In conclusion, shank length is a potential phenotypic marker when selecting for live weight at onset of lay and egg yield. The shank length could, therefore, permit selection of superior chickens at an early age.

A 2-bp deletion in intron 1 of TMEM182 is associated with TMEM182 mRNA expression and chicken body weight

1. Searching for molecular markers related to growth and carcase traits plays a critical role in improvement of the production performance of broilers. Previous studies found that transmembrane protein 182 (TMEM182) inhibits skeletal muscle development, growth, and regeneration, implying that the TMEM182 gene plays an important role during the development process of skeletal muscle.2. A novel 2-bp indel in intron 1 of TMEM182 was detected in a yellow chicken population derived from the cross of White Recessive Rock chickens with Xinghua chickens, and three genotypes II (inserted homozygote), ID (inserted and deleted heterozygote) and DD (deleted homozygote) were observed. Association analyses indicated that the indel was significantly associated with the body weight, muscle fibre area, breast muscle weight and wing weight in the F2 population.3. The expression of TMEM182 in leg muscle of chickens with II genotype was higher than that with DD genotype, with the 2-bp indel located in one of the putative PAX4 binding sites. Further research through luciferase assays revealed that the PAX4 could bind to the putative binding site and increase the TMEM182 transcription, with the 2-bp deletion disrupting the binding of PAX4.4. The present study provides evidence for the association of the novel 2-bp indel in intron 1 of TMEM182 with the growth and carcase traits of chickens. This 2-bp indel could be used as a genetic marker in broiler breeding.

Genetic Comparisons of Body Weight, Average Daily Gain, and Breast Circumference between Slow-Growing Thai Native Chickens (Pradu Hang dum) Raised On-Site Farm and On-Station

To ensure that any new technology developed within an experimental station is appropriate to the community’s needs and compatible with the existing systems, on-site farm research is an important component in examining the effectiveness of agricultural research. The present study examined the growth performance and genetics of Thai native chickens under conditions typically experienced by farmers on smallholder farms (on-site farms) compared with at an experimental unit (on-station). There were 1694 Thai native chickens (Pradu Hang dum) used in this experiment, and they were divided into 613 chickens for the on-station and 1081 chickens for the on-site farm experiments. The individual chicken data included the birth weight (BW0) and body weight at 4, 8, 12, and 16 weeks of age (BW4, BW8, BW12, and BW16, respectively), ADG from 0−4, 4−8, 8−12, 12−16 weeks of age (ADG0−4, ADG4−8, ADG8−12, ADG12−16, respectively), and breast circumference at 8, 12, and 16 weeks of age (BrC8, BrC12, BrC16, respectively). A multiple traits animal model and a selection index were used to estimate the variance components, genetic parameters, and breeding values of growth traits. The results showed that the body weight, average daily gain, and breast circumference at 8, 12, and 16 weeks of age of Thai native chickens raised on-station were higher than those raised on-site at the farm among mixed-sex and sex-segregated chickens, while the birth weight and body weight at four weeks of age (BW0 and BW4) and ADG from 0−4 weeks of age (ADG0−4) were not significantly different (p > 0.05). The heritability estimates of body weight, average daily gain, and breast circumference in the chickens raised at the on-site farm and on-station were moderate to high, with on-station values slightly higher than on-site farm values. The heritability estimates of body weight were 0.236 to 0.499 for the on-site farm, and 0.291 to 0.499 for on-station. For average daily gain, the heritability estimates were 0.274 to 0.283 for the on-site farm and 0.298 to 0.313 for on-station; meanwhile, and for breast circumference, the heritability estimates were 0.204 to 0.268 for the on-site farm and 0.278 to 0.296 for on-station. Both phenotypic and genetic correlations among and between growth traits were positive and ranged from low to high values. The top 20% of the estimated breeding values and selection indices in the on-site farm and on-station experiments showed that the body weight at eight weeks of age (BW8), ADG from 4−8 weeks of age (ADG4−8), and breast circumference at eight weeks of age (BrC8) should be used as selection criteria for Thai native chicken breeding programs. In conclusion, the genetic parameters and breeding values in on-station experiments showed that the breeding program by selection index for improving growth performance is valid. Therefore, to implement such a breeding program in an on-site farm, an intensive or semi-intensive farm system should be considered to minimize the effect of genotype-environment interaction.

Comparative Study of Phenotypes and Genetics Related to the Growth Performance of Crossbred Thai Indigenous (KKU1 vs. KKU2) Chickens under Hot and Humid Conditions

To improve the body weight and growth performance traits of crossbred Thai indigenous chickens, phenotypic performance and genetic values were estimated. Crossbred Thai indigenous chickens, designated KKU1 and KKU2, were compared. The data included 1375 records of body weight (BW0, BW2, BW4, and BW16), breast circumference at 6 weeks of age (BrC6), and average daily gain (ADG0−2, ADG0−4, and ADG0−6). A multi-trait animal model with the average information-restricted maximum likelihood (AI-REML) was used to estimate the genetic parameters and breeding values. The results showed that the body weight and breast circumference traits (BW2, BW4, BW6, and BrC6) for the mixed sex KKU1 chickens were higher than for the KKU2 chickens (p < 0.05). For the growth performance traits, the KKU1 chickens had higher average daily gain and feed intake and a lower feed conversion ratio than the KKU2 chickens (p < 0.05). The survival rates were not different except at up to 6 weeks of age, when that of the KKU1 chickens was slightly lower. The specific combining ability, heritability, genetic and phenotypic correlations, and estimated breeding values showed that the KKU1 chickens had better genetics than the KKU2 chickens. In conclusion, KKU1 chickens are suitable for development as crossbred Thai indigenous chickens for enhanced growth performance and for commercial use.

Genetic Evaluation of Body Weights and Egg Production Traits Using a Multi-Trait Animal Model and Selection Index in Thai Native Synthetic Chickens (Kaimook e-san2)

To improve the genetics of both growth and egg production, which are limitations in purebred native chickens, new genetic lines can be developed using an appropriate genetic approach. The data used in this study included 2713 body weight (BW0, BW4, BW6, BW8, and BW10), breast circumference (BrC6), chicken age at first egg (AFE), and egg production (240EP, 270EP, 300EP, and 365EP) records covering the period 2015 to 2020. A multi-trait animal model with the average information-restricted maximum likelihood (AI-REML) and a selection index was used to estimate the variance components, genetic parameters, and breeding values. The results showed that males had significantly higher weights than females (p < 0.05) from 4 to 10 weeks of age and that this difference increased over the generations. The differences between BW0 and BrC6 by sex and generation were not significant (p > 0.05). The estimated heritability of body weight ranged from 0.642 (BW0) to 0.280 (BW10); meanwhile, the estimated heritability of BrC6 was moderate (0.284). For egg production traits, the estimated heritability of 240EP, 270EP, 300EP, and 365EP was 0.427, 0.403, 0.404, and 0.426, respectively, while the estimated heritability of AFE was 0.269. The genetic and phenotypic correlations among the growth traits (BW0 to BW10) were low to highly positive. The genetic and phenotypic correlations between growth (BW0 to BW10) and BrC6 traits were positive, and the genetic correlations between BW6 (0.80), BW8 (0.84), BW10 (0.93), and BrC6 were strongly positive. Genetic correlations among the egg production traits (240EP, 270EP, 300EP, and 365EP) were low to highly positive and ranged from 0.04 to 0.86. The genetic correlations between AFE and all egg production traits were low to moderately negative and ranged from −0.14 to −0.29. The positive genetic correlations between body weight (BW6, BW8, and BW10) and egg production traits were found only in 240EP. The average genetic progress of body weight traits ranged from −0.38 to 30.12 g per generation for BW0 to BW10 (p < 0.05); the genetic progress was 0.28 cm per generation for BrC6 (p > 0.05). The average genetic progress of cumulative egg production traits ranged from 4.25 to 12.42 eggs per generation for 240EP to 365EP (p < 0.05), while the average genetic progress of AFE was −7.12 days per generation (p < 0.05). In conclusion, our study suggests that the body weight at six weeks of age (BW6), breast circumference at six weeks of age (BrC6), cumulative egg production at 240 days of age (240EP), and age at first egg (AFE) are the traits that should be used as selection criteria, as they have a positive effect on the development of growth and egg production.

Chicken ovarian follicles morphology and growth differentiation factor 9 gene expression in chicken ovarian follicles: review

Ovary follicular development is a progressive system from the beginning of small cortical follicles to the ovulation of hierarchical follicles. The review was conducted to provide information on the indigenous chickens commonly used for egg production, chicken ovarian follicles morphology and expression of growth differentiation factor 9 (GDF9) gene in ovarian follicles and its relationship with egg production. The research databases used in the study include google scholar, Science Direct, PubMed, JSTOR and Cambridge Core. Google, Yahoo and Baidu search engines were used to search the information. In this study, the papers selected for use were original research articles and reviews to ensure that the information used was from research results. Besides, only recent English papers, 2010-2021, were used. The keywords used to search for articles were chicken ovarian follicles, ovarian morphology and GDF9 gene expression. The documents showed that pre-hierarchical follicles include many small and large white follicles, which are about 2-5mm in diameter and 5 to 6 small yellow follicles (SYF) that are about 5-10mm in diameter. Preovulatory follicles are about five to six in number and above 10mm in diameter, with the sizes from F6 to F1, with F1 as the largest follicle. Further, the studies revealed that GDF9 gene mRNA is expressed in the highest concentration in small yellow follicles and other studies reported that the expression of GDF9 gene has been found in follicles of the primary to preovulatory stages in chickens. This review concludes that the GDF9 gene expression is mainly throughout follicular growth and it stimulates the proliferation of pre-hierarchical granulosa cells. The increased egg production in chickens depends on progressive developmental stages and the growth of ovarian follicles.

Analysis of (co) variance components and estimation of breeding value of growth and production traits in Dahlem Red chicken using pedigree relationship in an animal model

Variance and covariance components of growth and production traits were analyzed employing REML animal model to assess the Dahlem Red (PD-3) chicken population for direct additive genetic, maternal effects and to estimate the estimated breeding value (EBV), genetic parameters, genetic trends and rate of inbreeding (ΔF) utilizing seven generation’s data. The generation and hatch had significant (P≤0.01) effect on the body weight at 0 day (BW0), 2 (BW2), 4 (BW4) and 6 weeks (BW6) and shank length at six weeks of age (SL6). The average least squares means (LSM) for BW6 and SL6 were 273.93±0.62 g and 53.97±0.05 mm, respectively. All the production traits were significantly (P≤0.01) influenced by generation and hatch. The average LSM for age at sexual maturity (ASM), egg production up to 40 weeks (EP40) and egg mass up to 40 weeks (EM40) were 168.82±0.25 d, 72.60±0.41 eggs and 4.21±0.07 kg, respectively. Model 5 with additive direct, maternal genetic, maternal permanent environmental and residual variance components was the best for BW0, BW2 and BW4 based on the AIC values obtained in WOMBAT. Model 4 was the best model for BW6, SL6, ASM, EP40 and EM40 with additive direct, maternal permanent environmental and residual variance components. Maternal effects were higher during early age, decreased with age, and remained present until 20 weeks of age. The heritability (h²) estimates were low to moderate in magnitude for all the growth traits and ranged from 0.02±0.03 to 0.19±0.03. The maternal heritability was high at hatch (0.35±0.06), decreased gradually until 4^th week (0.02±0.01) and ceased afterwards. The heritabilities of EP40 (0.11±0.03) and EM40 (0.12±0.04) were low. The direct additive genetic correlations (r_a) between BW2, BW4, BW6 and SL6 were high and positive (P≤ 0.05). The additive genetic and maternal permanent environmental correlation between EP40 and EM40 were high and positive (P≤ 0.05). The EBV of EM40 was significant (P≤ 0.05) with 0.48 kg/generation in PD-3 chicken at the end of the seventh generation. The EBV of EP40 showed an increasing trend with a genetic gain of 1.87 eggs per generation. The average inbreeding coefficient of the population was 0.019 and average ΔF was 0.007 over the last seven generations of selection. The EBV trends for primary and associated traits showed linear trends in the desired direction and negligible inbreeding.

Estimation of breeding value, genetic parameters and maternal effects of economic traits in rural male parent line chicken using pedigree relationships in an animal model

Breeding value (BV), genetic parameters and additive genetic, and maternal effects were evaluated on growth and production traits utilizing data from eight generations employing animal model in a rural male parent line (PD-6) chicken at ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad, India. The least squares means (LSM) for body weight (BW) and shank length (SL) up to 6 weeks of age varied significantly (p ≤ .01) among the generations and hatches. BW increased significantly (p ≤ .01) over the generations and decreased with the hatches. Sex also had a significant effect on BW and shank length except for BW at 0 day (BW0). LSM for BW (BW6) and Shank length (SL6) at 6 weeks of age were 598.84 ± 0.79 g and 74.57 ± 0.04 mm, respectively. Males recorded significantly (p ≤ .01) higher BWs and shank length. All the production traits were significantly (p ≤ .01) influenced by the generation effect. The overall LSM for age at sexual maturity (ASM), egg production at 40 weeks (EP40) and egg weight at 40 weeks (EW40) were 164.93 ± 0.23 days, 74.66 ± 0.40 eggs and 54.79 ± 0.08 g, respectively. Model 3 with additive, maternal permanent environmental and residual effects was the appropriate model for BW2, BW4, BW6, SL4 and SL6, whereas Model 4 with maternal effects was the best for BW0. The heritability estimates for BW6 and SL6 were 0.22 ± 0.02 and 0.18 ± 0.02, respectively. Model 1 with additive direct and residual effects was the best appropriate model for all the production traits. The heritability estimates of EP40 and EW40 were 0.16 ± 0.04 and 0.34 ± 0.05, respectively. BW and shank length were highly correlated with significant (p ≤ .05) positive association from different components. The correlation coefficient from direct additive component between egg production and BW40 was negative, while it was positive with less magnitude between egg production and BW20. The egg production and egg weights had a negative association at different ages. BV of SL6, the primary trait of selection, was significant (p ≤ .05) across the generations and increased linearly with an average genetic gain of 1.05 mm per generation. BV of BW6 was also significant (p ≤ .05) and increased linearly as correlated response with an average genetic response of 22.34 g per generation. BV of EP40 showed an increasing trend with a genetic gain of 0.02 eggs per generation. The EW 40 also increased linearly with an average genetic gain of 0.06 g. The average inbreeding coefficient of the population was 0.015. The study concluded that the population was in ideal status with a linearly increasing trend of average BV with negligible inbreeding over the eight generations of selection.

Using random regression models to estimate genetic variation in growth pattern and its association with sexual maturity of Thai native chickens

1. Genetic (co)variances and parameters between body weights (BW) across the growth trajectory were estimated using a univariate random regression (RR) animal model. The effect of growth rates (GH) on age at first egg (AFE) and egg weight at first egg (EWFE) were explored using a series of univariate and bivariate analyses. 2. Body weights were taken from Thai native chickens at hatch day to 168 days of age. The model included interactions between age with hatch nested within year and sex as fixed effects, and random effects of direct additive genetic, direct permanent environmental, maternal genetic and maternal permanent environmental effects. All random effects were fitted as regressions to animals' age via quadratic Legendre polynomials and fitting six classes of residual variances was identified as an optimal variance structure to estimate parameters. 3. Genetic and phenotypic variances for BW increased with increasing age. Estimated heritabilities for direct additive (h² _a) and maternal genetic (h² _m) effects on BW traits ranged from 0.34 to 0.54, and 0.04 to 0.06, respectively. Estimated variance ratios for direct (c² _ape) and maternal permanent environmental (c² _mpe) effects ranged from 0.19 to 0.48 and 0.10 to 0.12, respectively. Estimated correlations between weights at different ages were high for all random effects. 4. Estimated h² _a for six GH traits ranged from 0.06 to 0.28, while for AFE and EWFE these were 0.24 and 0.16, respectively. Estimated h² _m and c² _mpe were low for GH. Estimated genetic correlations between GH and AFE ranged from -0.22 to 0.02 and, between GH and EWFE, ranged from -0.05 to 0.40. These estimates suggested that selecting high GH chickens at 28 days of age can be expected to reduce AFE and to increase EWFE.

Optimizing design to estimate genetic correlations between environments with common environmental effects

Breeding programs for different species aim to improve performance by testing members of full-sib (FS) and half-sib (HS) families in different environments. When genotypes respond differently to changes in the environment, this is defined as genotype by environment (G × E) interaction. The presence of common environmental effects within families generates covariance between siblings, and these effects should be taken into account when estimating a genetic correlation. Therefore, an optimal design should be established to accurately estimate the genetic correlation between environments in the presence of common environmental effects. We used stochastic simulation to find the optimal population structure using a combination of FS and HS groups with different levels of common environmental effects. Results show that in a population with a constant population size of 2,000 individuals per environment, ignoring common environmental effects when they are present in the population will lead to an upward bias in the estimated genetic correlation of on average 0.3 when the true genetic correlation is 0.5. When no common environmental effects are present in the population, the lowest standard error (SE) of the estimated genetic correlation was observed with a mating ratio of one dam per sire, and 10 offspring per sire per environment. When common environmental effects are present in the population and are included in the model, the lowest SE is obtained with mating ratios of at least 5 dams per sire and with a minimum number of 10 offspring per sire per environment. We recommend that studies that aim to estimate the magnitude of G × E in pigs, chicken, and fish should acknowledge the potential presence of common environmental effects and adjust the mating ratio accordingly.

Variance component analysis of growth and production traits in Vanaraja male line chickens using animal model

Objective

A comprehensive study was conducted to study the effects of partition of variance on accuracy of genetic parameters and genetic trends of economic traits in Vanaraja male line/project directorate-1 (PD-1) chicken.

Methods

Variance component analysis utilizing restricted maximum likelihood animal model was carried out with five generations data to delineate the population status, direct additive, maternal genetic, permanent environmental effects, besides genetic trends and performance of economic traits in PD-1 chickens. Genetic trend was estimated by regression of the estimated average breeding values (BV) on generations.

Results

The body weight (BW) and shank length (SL) varied significantly (p≤0.01) among the generations, hatches and sexes. The least squares mean of SL at six weeks, the primary trait was 77.44±0.05 mm. All the production traits, viz., BWs, age at sexual maturity, egg production (EP) and egg weight were significantly influenced by generation. Model four with additive, maternal permanent environmental and residual effects was the best model for juvenile growth traits, except for zero-day BW. The heritability estimates for BW and SL at six weeks (SL6) were 0.20±0.03 and 0.17±0.03, respectively. The BV of SL6 in the population increased linearly from 0.03 to 3.62 mm due to selection. Genetic trend was significant (p≤0.05) for SL6, BW6, and production traits. The average genetic gain of EP40 for each generation was significant (p≤0.05) with an average increase of 0.38 eggs per generation. The average inbreeding coefficient was 0.02 in PD-1 line.

Conclusion

The population was in ideal condition with negligible inbreeding and the selection was quite effective with significant genetic gains in each generation for primary trait of selection. The animal model minimized the over-estimation of genetic parameters and improved the accuracy of the BV, thus enabling the breeder to select the suitable breeding strategy for genetic improvement.

Genetic analysis on body weight at different ages in broiler chicken raised in commercial environment

A multivariate model was developed and used to estimate genetic parameters of body weight (BW) at 1-6 weeks of age of broilers raised in a commercial environment. The development of model was based on the predictive ability of breeding values evaluated from a cross-validation procedure that relied on half-sib correlation. The multivariate model accounted for heterogeneous variances between sexes through standardization applied to male and female BWs differently. It was found that the direct additive genetic, permanent environmental maternal and residual variances for BW increased drastically as broilers aged. The drastic increase in variances over weeks of age was mainly due to scaling effects. The ratio of the permanent environmental maternal variance to phenotypic variance decreased gradually with increasing age. Heritability of BW traits ranged from 0.28 to 0.33 at different weeks of age. The direct genetic effects on consecutive weekly BWs had high genetic correlations (0.85-0.99), but the genetic correlations between early and late BWs were low (0.32-0.57). The difference in variance components between sexes increased with increasing age. In conclusion, the permanent environmental maternal effect on broiler chicken BW decreased with increasing age from weeks 1 to 6. Potential bias of the model that considered identical variances for sexes could be reduced when heterogeneous variances between sexes are accounted for in the model.

Estimation of additive and non-additive genetic variances of body weight in crossbreed populations of the Japanese quail

A major part of the growth performance in birds is the result of the combined effects of genes, including the general and specific combining ability that requires the design of an optimal mating system. The aim of this study was to fit the best model for each body weight trait from hatch to 45 days and the estimation of the variance components and the genetic parameters for the body weight traits of a crossbred population. This crossbred population was created by 4 strains of Japanese quail, including the Italian Speckled (A), Tuxedo (B), Pharaoh (C), Texas A&M (D), and the body weights of the different combinations were analyzed by 24 models including the direct genetic effect, the non-additive genetic effects including dominance and epistatic effects, the maternal permanent environmental and maternal genetic effects. The selection of the best fit model of each trait was performed based on the deviance information criteria. The variance components were estimated using a single-trait animal model analyzed with Gibbs sampling. At the early stage of bird growth, maternal genetic and maternal permanent environmental effects had a considerable contribution to the best model, but the contribution of these effects reduced with an increase in the bird's age and the additive variance contribution increased. Adding non-additive genetic effects (dominance and epistasis) to the models significantly reduced the variance of the error and the additive genetic variance estimated with high accuracy. The estimated heritability of body weight traits for the body weights of hatch, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, and 45 d were 0.316, 0.170, 0.251, 0.153, 0.132, 0.164, 0.290, 0.425, 0.476, and 0.362, respectively. The ratio of maternal genetic and maternal permanent environmental was considerable especially on early age body weight but the ratio of dominance and epistatic variances on each of the body weight traits was less than 4.5% of the total variance, but led to a more accurate estimates of the direct additive genetic.

Dominance genetic and maternal effects for genetic evaluation of egg production traits in dual-purpose chickens

1. A study was conducted to study direct dominance genetic and maternal effects on genetic evaluation of production traits in dual-purpose chickens. The data set consisted of records of body weight and egg production of 49 749 Mazandaran fowls from 19 consecutive generations. Based on combinations of different random effects, including direct additive and dominance genetic and maternal additive genetic and environmental effects, 8 different models were compared. 2. Inclusion of a maternal genetic effect in the models noticeably improved goodness of fit for all traits. Direct dominance genetic effect did not have noticeable effects on goodness of fit but simultaneous inclusion of both direct dominance and maternal additive genetic effects improved fitting criteria and accuracies of genetic parameter estimates for hatching body weight and egg production traits. 3. Estimates of heritability (h²) for body weights at hatch, 8 weeks and 12 weeks of age (BW0, BW8 and BW12, respectively), age at sexual maturity (ASM), average egg weights at 28-32 weeks of laying period (AEW), egg number (EN) and egg production intensity (EI) were 0.08, 0.21, 0.22, 0.22, 0.21, 0.09 and 0.10, respectively. For BW0, BW8, BW12, ASM, AEW, EN and EI, proportion of dominance genetic to total phenotypic variance (d²) were 0.06, 0.08, 0.01, 0.06, 0.06, 0.08 and 0.07 and maternal heritability estimates (m²) were 0.05, 0.04, 0.03, 0.13, 0.21, 0.07 and 0.03, respectively. Negligible coefficients of maternal environmental effect (c²) from 0.01 to 0.08 were estimated for all traits, other than BW0, which had an estimate of 0.30. 4. Breeding values (BVs) estimated for body weights at early ages (BW0 and BW8) were considerably affected by components of the models, but almost similar BVs were estimated by different models for higher age body weight (BW12) and egg production traits (ASM, AEW, EN and EI). Generally, it could be concluded that inclusion of maternal effects (both genetic and environmental) and, to a lesser extent, direct dominance genetic effect would improve the accuracy of genetic evaluation for early age body weights in dual-purpose chickens.

Genetic parameters for growth characteristics of free-range chickens under univariate random regression models

Repeated measures from the same individual have been analyzed by using repeatability and finite dimension models under univariate or multivariate analyses. However, in the last decade, the use of random regression models for genetic studies with longitudinal data have become more common. Thus, the aim of this research was to estimate genetic parameters for body weight of four experimental chicken lines by using univariate random regression models. Body weight data from hatching to 84 days of age (n = 34,730) from four experimental free-range chicken lines (7P, Caipirão da ESALQ, Caipirinha da ESALQ and Carijó Barbado) were used. The analysis model included the fixed effects of contemporary group (gender and rearing system), fixed regression coefficients for age at measurement, and random regression coefficients for permanent environmental effects and additive genetic effects. Heterogeneous variances for residual effects were considered, and one residual variance was assigned for each of six subclasses of age at measurement. Random regression curves were modeled by using Legendre polynomials of the second and third orders, with the best model chosen based on the Akaike Information Criterion, Bayesian Information Criterion, and restricted maximum likelihood. Multivariate analyses under the same animal mixed model were also performed for the validation of the random regression models. The Legendre polynomials of second order were better for describing the growth curves of the lines studied. Moderate to high heritabilities (h(2) = 0.15 to 0.98) were estimated for body weight between one and 84 days of age, suggesting that selection for body weight at all ages can be used as a selection criteria. Genetic correlations among body weight records obtained through multivariate analyses ranged from 0.18 to 0.96, 0.12 to 0.89, 0.06 to 0.96, and 0.28 to 0.96 in 7P, Caipirão da ESALQ, Caipirinha da ESALQ, and Carijó Barbado chicken lines, respectively. Results indicate that genetic gain for body weight can be achieved by selection. Also, selection for body weight at 42 days of age can be maintained as a selection criterion.

An Introduction to the Avian Gut Microbiota and the Effects of Yeast-Based Prebiotic-Type Compounds as Potential Feed Additives

The poultry industry has been searching for a replacement for antibiotic growth promoters in poultry feed as public concerns over the use of antibiotics and the appearance of antibiotic resistance has become more intense. An ideal replacement would be feed amendments that could eliminate pathogens and disease while retaining economic value via improvements on body weight and feed conversion ratios. Establishing a healthy gut microbiota can have a positive impact on growth and development of both body weight and the immune system of poultry while reducing pathogen invasion and disease. The addition of prebiotics to poultry feed represents one such recognized way to establish a healthy gut microbiota. Prebiotics are feed additives, mainly in the form of specific types of carbohydrates that are indigestible to the host while serving as substrates to select beneficial bacteria and altering the gut microbiota. Beneficial bacteria in the ceca easily ferment commonly studied prebiotics, producing short-chain fatty acids, while pathogenic bacteria and the host are unable to digest their molecular bonds. Prebiotic-like substances are less commonly studied, but show promise in their effects on the prevention of pathogen colonization, improvements on the immune system, and host growth. Inclusion of yeast and yeast derivatives as probiotic and prebiotic-like substances, respectively, in animal feed has demonstrated positive associations with growth performance and modification of gut morphology. This review will aim to link together how such prebiotics and prebiotic-like substances function to influence the native and beneficial microorganisms that result in a diverse and well-developed gut microbiota.

Model comparison and estimation of genetic parameters for body weight in commercial broilers

The availability of powerful computing and advances in algorithmic efficiency allow for the consideration of increasingly complex models. Consequently, the development and application of appropriate statistical procedures for model evaluation is becoming increasingly important. This paper is concerned with the application of an alternative model determination criterion (conditional Akaike Information Criterion, cAIC) in a large dataset comprising 203 323 body weights of broilers, pertaining to 7 (BW7) and 35 (BW35) days of age. Seven univariate and seven bivariate models were applied. Direct genetic, maternal genetic and maternal environmental (c2) effects were estimated via REML. The model evaluation criteria included conditional Akaike Information Criterion (cAIC), Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) and the standard Akaike Information Criterion (henceforth marginal; mAIC). According to cAIC the best-fitting model included direct genetic, maternal genetic and c2 effects. Maternal heritabilities were low (0.10 and 0.03) compared to the direct heritabilities (0.17 and 0.21), while c2 was 0.05 and 0.04 for BW7 and BW35, respectively. BIC and mAIC favoured a model that additionally included a direct-maternal genetic covariance, resulting in highly negative direct-maternal genetic correlations (−0.47 and −0.64 for BW7 and BW35, respectively) and higher direct heritabilities (0.25 and 0.28 for BW7 and BW35, respectively). Results suggest that cAIC can select different animal models than mAIC and BIC with different biological properties.

Estimation of genetic parameters for body weight and egg production traits in Mazandaran native chicken

Native chicken breeding station of Mazandaran was established in 1988 with two main objectives: genetic improvement through selection programs and dissemination of indigenous Mazandarani birds. (Co)variance components and genetic parameters for economically important traits were estimated using (bi) univariate animal models with ASREML procedure in Mazandarani native chicken. The data were from 18 generations of selection (1988-2009). Heritability estimates for body weight at different ages [at hatch (bw1), 8 (bw8), 12 (bw12) weeks of ages and sex maturation (wsm)] ranged from 0.24 ± 0.00 to 0.47 ± 0.01. Heritability for reproductive traits including age at sex maturation (asm); egg number (en); weight of first egg (ew1); average egg weight at 28 (ew28), 30 (ew30), and 32 (ew32) weeks of age; their averages (av); average egg weight for the first 12 weeks of production (ew12); egg mass (em); and egg intensity (eint) varied from 0.16 ± 0.01 to 0.43 ± 0.01. Generally, the magnitudes of heritability for the investigated traits were moderate. However, egg production traits showed smaller heritability compared with growth traits. Genetic correlations among egg weight at different ages were mostly higher than 0.8. On the one hand, body weight at different ages showed positive and relatively moderate genetic correlations with egg weight traits (ew1, ew28, ew30, ew32, ew12, and av) and varied from 0.30 ± 0.03 to 0.59 ± 0.02. On the other hand, low negative genetic correlations were obtained between body weight traits (bw1, bw8, bw12, and wsm) and egg number (en). Also, there is low negative genetic correlation (-24 ± 0.04 to -29 ± 0.05) between egg number and egg weight. Therefore, during simultaneous selection process for both growth and egg production traits, probable reduction in egg production due to low reduction in egg number may be compensated by increases in egg weight.

Genetic and phenotypic parameter estimates for body weights and egg production in Horro chicken of Ethiopia

A breeding program has been established in 2008 to improve productivity of Horro chicken, an indigenous population in the western highlands of Ethiopia. The pedigree descended from 26 sires and 260 dams. Body weights were measured every 2 weeks from hatch to 8 weeks then every 4 weeks for the next 8 weeks. Egg production was recorded to 44 weeks of age for one generation. Genetic parameters were estimated using animal model fitted with common environmental effects for growth traits and ignoring common environment for egg production traits. Direct heritabilities ranged from low (0.15 ± 0.08), for body weight at 6 weeks, to moderate (0.40 ± 0.23), for hatch weight. Heritabilities of common environmental effects on growth were high at hatch (0.39 ± 0.10) and remained low afterwards. Age at first egg showed a very low heritability (0.06 ± 0.15). Heritabilities of egg numbers in the first, second, third, and fourth months of laying were 0.32 (±0.13), 0.20 (±0.16), 0.56 (±0.15), and 0.25 (±0.14), respectively. Heritabilities of cumulative of monthly records of egg numbers were from 0.24 ± 0.16 (for the first 2 months, EP12) to 0.35 ± 0.16 (over the 6 months, EP16). Body weight at 16 weeks of age (BW16) has a strong genetic correlation with the cumulative of monthly records: 0.92 (with EP12), 0.69 (with EP36), and 0.73 (with EP16). Besides their strong association, BW16 and EP16 showed higher heritability, relative to their respective trait categories. These two traits seemed to have common genes and utilizing them as selection traits would be expected to improve both egg production and growth performance of local chicken. However, the standard errors of estimates in this study were mostly high indicating that the estimates have low precision. Parameter estimations based on more data are needed before applying the current results in breeding programs.

Estimation of genetic parameters for contents of intramuscular fat and inosine-5'-monophosphate and carcass traits in Chinese Beijing-You chickens

This study was conducted to estimate genetic parameters of meat quality-related traits by a MTDFREML procedure, using 1,069 purebred Beijing-You full-sib male chickens derived from the first 2 generations of divergent selection for the percentage of intramuscular fat (IMF) and selection for increased inosine-5'-monophosphate content (IMP) in breast meat. The results show that estimated heritability of IMP was moderate (0.23), and heritability of IMF was low (0.11). Other traits with high heritabilities, ranging between 0.56 and 0.79, were BW, abdominal fat weight (AFW), breast meat yield, ratio of breast meat yield to evisceration weight (BMP), leg muscle yield, comb weight, and ratio of comb weight to BW (CWP). Moderate heritabilities for the ratio of AFW to BW (AFP) and leg muscle yield to evisceration weight were estimated, 0.24 and 0.32, respectively. Lower significant phenotypic correlations of IMP with BMP and ratio of leg muscle weight to evisceration weight were discovered (P < 0.05), whereas IMF exhibited slightly positive, though significant, phenotypic correlations with BW (0.11) and AFP (0.27). Genetic correlations of IMP with BW and CWP were negative (-0.38 and -0.62, respectively), whereas a high positive genetic correlation was found between IMP and BMP (0.57). It was found that IMF had high genetic correlations with BW (0.75) and AFW (0.66) and moderate correlations with AFP (0.32) and CWP (0.40). A low positive genetic correlation was estimated between IMP and IMF (0.27). In conclusion, both IMP and IMF contents in chicken meat have the potential to be increased through genetic selection with little or no positive effect on BW. Furthermore, close managerial control of growth rate (and BW) will be needed to assure high quality of chicken meat so that increased IMP and IMF can be obtained with less abdominal fat deposited.
