Abstract
Soybean isoflavones (SIFs), a group of secondary metabolites, have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hormone-like activities. Supplementation with SIFs in the diet was reported to promote lactation performance in ruminants. The present study was performed to further decipher the effect of various concentrations of SIFs on growth and slaughter performance, serum parameters, meat quality, and ruminal microbiota in fattening goats. After a two-week acclimation, a total of 27 5-month-old Guanzhong male goats (18.29 ± 0.44 kg) were randomly assigned to control (NC), 100 mg/d SIF (SIF1), or 200 mg/d SIF (SIF2) groups. The experimental period lasted 56 days. The weight of the large intestine was greater (p < 0.05) in the SIF1 and SIF2 groups compared with the NC group. Meat quality parameters indicated that SIF1 supplementation led to lower (p < 0.05) cooking loss and shear force (0.05 < p < 0.10). The 16S rRNA sequencing analysis demonstrated that SIF1 supplementation led to lower (p < 0.05) proportions of Papillibacter and Prevotellaceae_UCG-004 but greater (p < 0.05) CAG-352 abundance in the rumen; these responses might have contributed to the improvement in production performance. In conclusion, meat quality and ruminal microbiome could be manipulated in a positive way by oral supplementation with 100 mg/d of SIFs in fattening goats. Thus, this study provides new insights and practical evidence for the introduction of SIFs as a novel additive in goat husbandry.

Terminal Crossbreeding of Murciano-Granadina Goats with Boer Bucks: Characteristics of the Carcass and the Meat. Animals (Basel) 2022; 12:ani12192548. Abstract
After verifying productive improvements from the crossbreeding (MB) of Boer males with females of the Murciano-Granadina (MG) breed, the aim of this work was to determine its consequences on the carcass and meat characteristics of suckling kids (9 kg of weight at slaughter) of both sexes. A total of 94 kids (25 purebred MG males, 19 purebred MG females, 25 crossed MB males and 25 crossed MB females) were used. It was found that MB kids reached slaughter weight at a younger age (44 ± 1 vs. 63 ± 1 days, p < 0.001). For carcass yield, the interaction genotype x sex was observed, where MB females presented a higher value (51.71 ± 0.34%) than the rest of the animals (MB males 50.53 ± 0.34, p < 0.05; MG males 50.60 ± 0.34, p < 0.05; MG females 49.62 ± 0.39, p < 0.001). MB kids had greater leg compactness, (36.28 ± 0.27 vs. 34.71 ± 0.29 g/cm, p < 0.001), slightly improved expensive carcass cuts (75.93 ± 0.31 vs. 74.77 ± 0.34%, p = 0.014) and higher muscle/bone (2.93 ± 0.03 vs. 2.76 ± 0.03, p < 0.001) and meat/bone ratios (3.56 ± 0.04 vs. 3.36 ± 0.04, p < 0.001) than MG kids. They also showed a somewhat more intense red colour (8.57 ± 0.25 vs. 7.74 ± 0.27, p = 0.027), higher colour saturation (9.06 ± 0.24 vs. 8.20 ± 0.26, p = 0.016) and less meat firmness (1.95 ± 0.08 vs. 2.23 ± 0.081 kg/cm2, p = 0.021). On the other hand, males had a slightly improved proportion of expensive cuts (75.98 ± 0.31 vs. 74.73 ± 0.34, p = 0.008), but their carcass contained a higher proportion of bone (22.16 ± 0.21 vs. 21.17 ± 0.17%; p < 0.001), a lower proportion of intermuscular fat (9.54 ± 0.24 vs. 10.93 ± 0.24, p < 0.001), a higher muscle/fat ratio (5.01 ± 0.10 vs. 4.41 ± 0.10, p < 0.001) and lower muscle/bone (2.80 ± 0.03 vs. 2.89 ± 0.03%, p = 0.016) and meat/bone ratios (3.36 ± 0.04 vs. 3.56 ± 0.04%, p < 0.001) than females. There were no sensory differences in any case. It is concluded that this crossbreeding strategy also improves the carcass and meat characteristics, making it a valid alternative to improve the productive results of MG dairy goat herds.

Genotype effects on energy and protein requirements in growing male goats. Animal 2020; 14:s323-s331. Abstract
Goat genotype may alter the net energy and protein requirements for maintenance (NEm and NPm, respectively) and weight gain (NEg and NPg).This study was designed to investigate and quantify the effect of goat type on NEm, NPm, NEg and NPg, and quantify the net requirements for energy and protein for dairy, meat and indigenous growing male goats. For that, comparative slaughter studies were gathered and a meta-analytical approach was used. Two distinct databases were organized: one composed of 233 individual records from 11 studies of meat (n = 81), dairy (n = 97) and indigenous (n = 55) growing male goats weighing from 4.50 to 51.0 kg, to depict NEm and NPm; and another database composed of 239 individual records from nine studies of meat (n = 87), dairy (n = 97) and indigenous (n = 55) growing male goats weighing from 4.30 to 51.0 kg, to depict NEg and NPg. Our findings showed that NEm of meat goats was 8.5% greater (336 ± 10.8 kJ/kg0.75 of empty BW; EBW) than dairy and indigenous goats (310 ± 8.20 kJ/kg0.75 EBW; P < 0.05). Whereas, NPm was not affected by goat type (1.92 ± 0.239 g/kg EBW; P = 0.91). The NPg was 185.1 ± 1.82 g/kg of EBW gain for goats weighing 5 kg BW and 192.5 ± 4.33 g/kg of EBW gain for goats weighing 45 kg BW, and thus did not change across goat type (P = 0.12). On the other hand, NEg increased from 7.29 ± 0.191 to 11.9 ± 0.386 MJ/kg of EBW in male dairy goats, and from 7.32 ± 0.144 to 15.7 ± 0.537 MJ/kg of EBW in meat and indigenous growing male goats weighing between 5 and 45 kg BW. When body protein was used as a predictor in the allometric equation instead of EBW seeking to account for the degree of maturity, goat type differences disappeared; however, this predictor showed a high variation among individuals. In conclusion, energy and protein requirements for gain in distinct goat types reflect on body composition differences. Future research should focus on better understanding the maturity degree and its consequences in the energy requirement of growing male goats and better depict the goat type effect on it, as well as on the efficiency of utilization.

Abstract
In practical production, almost all rams and about 50% of ewes are used to fatten. Researchers have proved that ewe ovariectomy could improve the productivity significantly, but the specific molecular mechanism is still unknown. In this study, five independent cDNA libraries (three and two from ovariectomized and normal ewe longissimus dorsi samples, respectively) were constructed to thoroughly explore the global transcriptome, further to reveal how the ovariectomized ewes influence muscle development by Illumina2000 sequencing technology. As a result, 205 358 transcripts and 118 264 unigenes were generated. 15 490 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were revealed and divided into six types, and the short repeat sequence SSR (monomers, dimers, trimers) was the domain type. Single nucleotide polymorphism analysis found that the number of transition was greater than the number of transversion among the five libraries. Furthermore, 1612 differently expressed genes (DEGs) (Log2fold_change > 1 and p < 0.05) were revealed between ovariectomized and normal ewe groups, in which 903 genes were expressed commonly in the two groups, and 288 and 421 genes were uniquely expressed in normal and ovariectomized ewe groups, respectively. Gene Ontology (GO) analysis categorized all unigenes into 555 GO terms and 56 DEGs were significantly categorized into 43 GO terms (p < 0.05). KEGG enrichment analysis annotated 12 976 genes (containing 137 DEGs) to 86 pathways, among them 24 and 11 DEGs involved in development and reproduction associated pathways, respectively. To validate the reliability of the RNA-seq analysis, 22 candidate DEGs were randomly selected to perform quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. The result showed that 9 and 1 genes were significantly and approximately significantly expressed in control and treatment group, respectively, and the results of RNA-seq are believable in this study. Overall, these results were helpful for elucidating the molecular mechanism of muscle development of ovariectomized animals and the application of female ovariectomy in fattening.

Abstract
RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito do cruzamento entre ovinos nativos no desempenho e características da carcaça. Foram utilizados vinte cordeiros, machos, inteiros, com idade inicial de quatro meses, e peso médio inicial 19,0±5,11, distribuídos em dois grupos genéticos: Rabo Largo (RL) e Santa Inês x Rabo Largo (F1SI x RL), em um delineamento inteiramente ao acaso. Os animais foram terminados em regime de confinamento durante 70 dias. Os cordeiros F1SI x RL apresentaram maiores pesos ao desmame, ao abate, do corpo vazio, das carcaças quente e fria, e maior rendimento biológico. Verificaram maiores valores para os parâmetros de morfometria da carcaça para animais F1SI x RL comparados aos animais Rabo Largo (P<0,05). Os pesos da hemi-carcaça e dos cortes comerciais foram superiores para cordeiros F1SI x RL. Nas medidas obtidas no músculo Longissimus dorsi, os cordeiros Rabo Largo apresentaram valores superiores para espessura de gordura subcutânea. A utilização da raça Santa Inês como base paterna acarreta em melhorias nas características de carcaça de cordeiros Rabo Largo podendo ser indicado em sistemas de produção de carne ovina.

Abstract
RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito da restrição alimentar sobre o desenvolvimento dos órgãos e deposição de gordura em caprinos Canindé castrados. Foram utilizados 21 cabritos confinados, em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com peso inicial de 15,9 ± 1,03kg. Os cabritos foram alocados em três níveis de restrição alimentar (sete animais por nível): ad libitum (alimentados à vontade); restrição moderada (restrição de 20% em relação à quantidade de matéria natural consumida pelos animais alimentados ad libitum) e restrição severa (restrição de 40% em relação à quantidade de ração consumida pelos animais alimentados ad libitum). A ração experimental apresentou uma proporção de 55% de volumoso (Tifton) e 45% de concentrado. Aos 110 dias de experimento os cabritos foram abatidos com peso médio de 23,5 kg ± 2,5 kg. Esvaziou-se o trato gastrointestinal (TGI), a bexiga e a vesícula biliar e foram mensurados os seus pesos para determinação do peso de corpo vazio (PCV). Foram separados e registrados os pesos dos órgãos (baço, coração, fígado, pâncreas, pulmões, rins, sangue, TGI) e dos depósitos de gordura (cardíaca, mesentérica, omental e pélvico-renal). A restrição alimentar em caprinos Canindé afetou o peso absoluto dos órgãos e das gorduras (P < 0.05) que estão mais envolvidas com a função de reserva energética (mesentérica, omental e pélvico-renal), no entanto, não afetou o percentual dos órgãos em relação ao PCV (P > 0.05), indicando que mesmo sob restrição o desenvolvimento dos órgãos é proporcional ao desenvolvimento do corpo.

Abstract
Avaliou-se o desempenho produtivo e características quantitativas e qualitativas de carcaça e dos não-componentes de carcaça de cordeiros SPRD (Sem Padrão Racial Definido) cruzados com as raças Santa Inês (SI) e Somalis Brasileira (SB) terminados em confinamento. Foram utilizados 16 cordeiros desmamados, machos, não castrados, com peso inicial 19,7±2,0kg e três meses de idade. Adotou-se o delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com blocos representados pelo peso inicial de cada grupo genético (½ SPRD x ½ SI e ½ SPRD x ½ SB), com oito animais por grupo. Os ovinos ½ SPRD x ½ SI apresentaram maior ganho de peso diário e total, comprimento e perímetro de pernil, comprimento interno da carcaça, peso e rendimento do corte serrote, peso e rendimento dos não-componentes da carcaça (pulmão e traqueia, fígado, rins, cabeça e patas). Os cordeiros ½ SPRD x ½ SB apresentaram maiores valores para escore de condição corporal inicial e final, espessura de gordura subcutânea, grau de acabamento, pH inicial e final. Assim, cordeiros mestiços ½ SPRD x ½ SI constituem uma alternativa promissora para o estabelecimento de sistemas produtivos mais eficientes, considerando a superioridade em ganho de peso e as características da carcaça relacionadas às medidas morfométricas, ao corte cárneo serrote e aos não-componentes da carcaça em relação aos animais ½ SPRD x ½ SB. No entanto, os cordeiros os cordeiros ½ SPRD x ½ SB apresentam superioridade quanto aos aspectos conservação da carcaça e nos casos de mercados com preferência por carcaça com maior teor de gordura.
