Sustainable Agriculture Systems in Vegetable Production Using Chitin and Chitosan as Plant Biostimulants

Chitin and chitosan are natural compounds that are biodegradable and nontoxic and have gained noticeable attention due to their effective contribution to increased yield and agro-environmental sustainability. Several effects have been reported for chitosan application in plants. Particularly, it can be used in plant defense systems against biological and environmental stress conditions and as a plant growth promoter—it can increase stomatal conductance and reduce transpiration or be applied as a coating material in seeds. Moreover, it can be effective in promoting chitinolytic microorganisms and prolonging storage life through post-harvest treatments, or benefit nutrient delivery to plants since it may prevent leaching and improve slow release of nutrients in fertilizers. Finally, it can remediate polluted soils through the removal of cationic and anionic heavy metals and the improvement of soil properties. On the other hand, chitin also has many beneficial effects such as plant growth promotion, improved plant nutrition and ability to modulate and improve plants’ resistance to abiotic and biotic stressors. The present review presents a literature overview regarding the effects of chitin, chitosan and derivatives on horticultural crops, highlighting their important role in modern sustainable crop production; the main limitations as well as the future prospects of applications of this particular biostimulant category are also presented.

Chemical Proprieties of Biopolymers (Chitin/Chitosan) and Their Synergic Effects with Endophytic Bacillus Species: Unlimited Applications in Agriculture

Over the past decade, reckless usage of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers in agriculture has made the environment and human health progressively vulnerable. This setting leads to the pursuit of other environmentally friendly interventions. Amongst the suggested solutions, the use of chitin and chitosan came about, whether alone or in combination with endophytic bacterial strains. In the framework of this research, we reported an assortment of studies on the physico-chemical properties and potential applications in the agricultural field of two biopolymers extracted from shrimp shells (chitin and chitosan), in addition to their uses as biofertilizers and biostimulators in combination with bacterial strains of the genus Bacillus sp. (having biochemical and enzymatic properties).

A novel chitosan biopolymer based Trichoderma delivery system: Storage stability, persistence and bio efficacy against seed and soil borne diseases of oilseed crops

Management of seed and soil borne fungal plant pathogens using fungal species belonging to the genus Trichoderma is gaining importance. Seed coating with powder based formulations of Trichoderma is most widely adopted by the researchers and farmers as well. Delivery system that leads to good adherence of fungal propagules on seed surface, minimizing the wastage of active ingredient, sustained and timely release during treatment process is very important for effective season long protection. Chitosan-PEG (Polyethylene glycol) (Cts-PEG) blend containing Trichoderma harzianum (Th4d) (Cts-PEG-Th) spores is developed and its storage stability, persistence in soil and bio efficacy against seed and soil borne pathogens of groundnut and safflower crops is studied. The blend was stable without much changes in pH throughout the storage period. Persistence studies conducted for 3 months revealed that Cts-PEG-Th amended soil, Trichoderma got released from polymer film slowly and reached a maximum of log 8 CFUs by 30 days and there after started declining to retain log 6 CFUs at 90 days. In shelf life study, the chitosan blend was able to maintain Trichoderma counts of log 10.0 and log 10.2 over a period of 6 months at storage temperatures of 30 °C and 4 °C, respectively and the antagonistic activity unaffected against three plant pathogens viz. Macrophomina phaseolina, Fusarium oxysporumf. sp.ricini and Aspergillus niger over a period of 6 months of storage. Bio efficacy testing in germination towels and green house pot studies revealed the effectiveness of seed treatment with Cts-PEG-Th blend significantly increasing the germination and seedling vigour and reducing the diseases in groundnut (peanut) and safflower.

FERTILIZAÇÃO NITROGENADA E BORATADA ASSOCIADA À INOCULAÇÃO COM Bacillus subtilis NO DESEMPENHO AGRONÔMICO DO FEIJOEIRO

O feijão é um grão muito consumido pela população brasileira, caracterizado como fonte de proteína acessível para a população de baixo poderio econômico. Entretanto, a produtividade brasileira é muito incipiente frente sua importância local. Objetivou-se com este trabalho verificar o efeito da adubação foliar com nitrogênio e boro, associada ou não à inoculação com Bacillus subtilis no desempenho agronômico do feijoeiro cv. Formoso. O experimento foi desenvolvido em um Latossolo Vermelho distrófico, em condições de semeadura direta, no município de Selvíria, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, com nove tratamentos e quatro repetições. Os produtos comerciais utilizados foram: Nitrobor® (10,2 g de nitrogênio L-1 + 2,04 g de boro L-1) e Panta® (1,0 x 109 u.f.c de B. subtilis mL-1). Os tratamentos foram estabelecidos por nove doses da associação Nitrobor® + Panta® (0 mL ha-1 + 0 mL ha-1; 150 mL ha-1 + 0 mL ha-1; 250 mL ha-1 + 0 mL ha-1; 350 mL ha-1 + 0 mL ha-1; 450 mL ha-1 + 0 mL ha-1; 150 mL ha-1 + 350 mL ha-1; 250 mL ha-1 + 350 mL ha-1; 350 mL ha-1 + 350 e 450 mL ha-1 + 350 mL ha-1). A inoculação com B. subtilis via parte aérea, associado ou não ao adubo foliar contendo nitrogênio e boro, não influencia a altura de planta, componentes de produção e produtividade de grãos do feijoeiro.

Endophytic colonisation of Bacillus subtilis in the roots of Robinia pseudoacacia L

The endophytic colonisation of Bacillus subtilis strain GXJM08, isolated from roots of Podocarpus imbricatus B1. Enum. P1. Jav., in roots of the leguminous plant Robinia pseudoacacia L. was investigated. Ultrastructure observations showed that B. subtilis caused morphological changes in the root hair and colonised the plant through infected root hairs. The structure of the infection thread was similar to that of rhizobia, but the structure of infected cells was different. B. subtilis is also different from rhizobia and plant pathogens in terms of the formation of a peribacteroid membrane and the mode of penetration through the host cell wall. Our results provide a basis for studying development of the mutualistic symbiotic relationship between B. subtilis and plants, and a basis for studying the mechanism of the B. subtilis-plant interaction.

Bioformulation of Burkholderia sp. MSSP with a multispecies consortium for growth promotion of Cajanus cajan

The present work was undertaken to formulate an effective bioformulation using Burkholderia sp. strain MSSP, a known plant-growth-promoting rhizobacterium. MSSP was tagged with the reporter gene of green fluorescent protein (gfp) to monitor its population in cost-effective solid carriers, including sugarcane-bagasse, sawdust, cocoa peat, rice husk, wheat bran, charcoal, and rock phosphate, and paneer-whey as liquid carrier. Physical and chemical properties of different low-cost carrier materials were studied. The viability of the green fluorescent tagged variant of MSSP was estimated in different sterile carrier materials. Whey and wheat bran proved to be efficient carrier materials for the bioformulation. Sawdust, rock phosphate, rice husk, and cocoa peat were average, while charcoal and sugarcane-bagasse proved to be inferior carriers. The viability of strain MSSP was also assessed in wheat bran and whey-based consortium, having three other bacterial strains, namely Sinorhizobium meliloti PP3, Rhizobium leguminosarum Pcc, and Bacillus sp. strain B1. Presence of other plant-growth-promoting bacteria did not have any detrimental effect on the viability of MSSP. Efficiency of the wheat-bran-based multispecies consortium was studied on the growth of pigeonpea in field conditions. A considerable increase in plant biomass, nodule number and weight, and number of pods was recorded as compared with individual trials and with the control.
