Abstract
Olive mill wastewater sludge (OMWS) is a by-product of the olive extraction process that is attracting substantial attention due to its extremely hazardous effects on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. OMWS is a product of the common disposal method of olive oil mill wastewater (OMWW) that accumulates in evaporation ponds. It is estimated that approximately 10 × 106 m3 of OMWS is generated worldwide each year. OMWS is characterized by its significantly variable physicochemical properties and organic pollutant constituents, such as phenols and lipids, which are dependent upon the environmental features of the receiving ponds. Nonetheless, many related studies have recognized the biofertilizer potential of this sludge owing to its high mineral nutrient and organic matter load. OMWS exhibits promising valorization potential in several fields, including agriculture and energy production. Compared to those of OMWW, studies of OMWS are still lacking concerning its composition and characteristics, which are necessary for the future implementation of efficient valorization strategies. The main purpose of this review paper is to fill the gap that exists in the literature by providing a critical analysis of the available data on OMWS production, distribution, characteristics, and properties. Additionally, this work sheds light on important factors affecting OMWS properties, including the variability of the indigenous microbial communities regarding bioremediation. Finally, this review addresses the current and future valorization routes, from detoxification to the development of promising applications in agriculture, energy, and the environment, which could have significant socioeconomic implications for low-income Mediterranean countries.

Abstract
Analysis of table olives microbiome using next-generation sequencing has enriched the available information about the microbial community composition of this popular fermented food. In this study, 16S and 18S rRNA sequencing was performed on table olives of five Greek popular cultivars, Halkidikis, Thassou, Kalamon, Amfissis, and Konservolia, fermented either by Greek style (in brine or salt-drying) or by Spanish style, in order to evaluate their microbial communities. Moreover, analytical methods were used to evaluate their biochemical properties. The prevailing bacterial species of all olives belonged to Lactobacillaceae, Leuconostocaceae, and Erwiniaceae families, while the most abundant yeasts were of the Pichiaceae family. Principal coordinates analysis showed a clustering of samples cured by salt-drying and of samples stored in brine, regardless of their cultivar. The biochemical evaluation of total phenol content, antioxidant activity, hydroxytyrosol, oleuropein, oleocanthal, and oleacein showed that salt-dried olives had low amounts of hydroxytyrosol, while Spanish-style green olives had the highest amounts of oleocanthal. All the other values exhibited various patterns, implying that more than one factor affects the biochemical identity of the final product. The protocols applied in this study can provide useful insights for the final product, both for the producers and the consumers.

Abstract
Olive mill wastewater sludge (OMWS) is the main by-product of the olive industry. OMWS is usually dumped in landfills without prior treatment and may cause several eco-environmental hazards due to its high toxicity, which is mainly attributed to polyphenols and lipids. OMWS is rich in valuable biocompounds, which makes it highly desirable for valorization by composting. However, there is a need to understand how microbial communities evolve during OMWS composting with respect to physicochemical changes and the dynamics of pollutant degradation. In this study, we addressed the relationship between microbial community, physicochemical variations and pollutants degradation during the co-composting of OMWS and green wastes using metagenomic- and culture-dependent approaches. The results showed that in raw OMWS, Pichia was the most represented genus with almost 53% of the total identified fungal population. Moreover, the bacteria that dominated were Zymobacter palmae (20%) and Pseudomonas sp. (19%). The addition of green waste to OMWS improved the actinobacterial diversity of the mixture and enhanced the degradation of lipids (81.3%) and polyphenols (84.54%). Correlation analysis revealed that Actinobacteria and fungi (Candida sp., Galactomyces sp., and Pichia manshurica) were the microorganisms that had the greatest influence on the composting process. Overall, these findings provide for the first time some novel insights into the microbial dynamics during OMWS composting and may contribute to the development of tailored inoculum for process optimization.

Abstract
Olive oil production represents an agro-industrial activity of vital economic importance for many Mediterranean countries. However, it is associated with the generation of a huge amount of by-products, both in solid and liquid forms, mainly constituted by olive mill wastewater, olive pomace, wood, leaves, and stones. Although for many years olive by-products have only been considered as a relevant environmental issue, in the last decades, numerous studies have deeply described their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, analgesic, antimicrobial, antihypertensive, anticancer, anti-hyperglycemic activities. Therefore, the increasing interest in natural bioactive compounds represents a new challenge for olive mills. Studies have focused on optimizing methods to extract phenols from olive oil by-products for pharmaceutical or cosmetic applications and attempts have been made to describe microorganisms and metabolic activity involved in the treatment of such complex and variable by-products. However, few studies have investigated olive oil by-products in order to produce added-value ingredients and/or preservatives for food industries. This review provides an overview of the prospective of liquid olive oil by-products as a source of high nutritional value compounds to produce new functional additives or ingredients and to explore potential and future research opportunities.

Abstract
This study aims to develop a method for the preparation of natural table olives using locally selected microorganisms and without resorting to the usual techniques which employ lye treatment and acids. The effects of parameters, such as lye treatment, inoculation with yeasts, substitution of organic acids with vinegar and/or acetic acid bacteria, and finally alternating aeration have been assessed. Four different combinations were applied to the “Picholine marocaine” olive variety using indigenous strains, namely Lactobacillus plantarum S1, Saccharomyces cerevisiae LD01 and Acetobacter pasteurianus KU710511 (CV01) isolated respectively from olive brine, Bouslikhen dates and Cactus. Two control tests, referring to traditional and industrial processes, were used as references. Microbial and physicochemical tests showed that the L3V combination (inoculated with A. pasteurianus KU710511 and L. plantarum S1 under the optimal growth conditions of the Acetic Acid Bacteria (AAB) strain with 6% NaCl) was found to be favorable for the growth of the Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) strain which plays the key role in olive fermentation. This result was confirmed by sensory evaluation, placing L3V at the top of the evaluated samples, surpassing the industrial one where a chemical debittering treatment with lye was used. In addition, alternating aeration served to increase the microbial biomass of both AAB and LAB strains along with Saccharomyces cerevisiae LD01 strain, but also to use lower concentration of NaCl and to reduce the deterioration of olives compared to the anaerobic fermentation process. Finally, a mixed starter containing the three strains was prepared in a 10-L Lab-fermenter from the L3V sample in order to improve it in subsequent studies. The prepared starter mixture could be suitable for use as a parental strain to prepare table olives for artisan and industrial application in Morocco.

Abstract
Diverse vegetable oils are extracted from oleagenic trees and plants all over the world. In particular, olive oil represents a strategic socio-economic branch in the Mediterranean countries. These countries use either two or three-phase olive oil extraction systems. In this work, we focus on the by-products from three-phase olive oil extraction, which are the liquid olive mill wastewater (OMW) and the solid olive mill pomace (OMP) rejected in evaporative ponds. The disposal of this recalcitrant waste poses environmental problems such as the death of different species of insects and animals. In-depth ICP-OES analysis of the heavy metal composition of OMW and OMP revealed the presence of many metals ranging from non-toxic to highly toxic. The LC-HRMS characterization of these by-products indicated the presence of several secondary metabolites harmful to humans or to the environment. Thus, we aimed to identify OMW and OMP indigenous microbiota through metagenomics. The bacterial population was dominated by the Acetobacter (49.7%), Gluconobacter (17.3%), Gortzia (13.7%) and Nardonalla (5.3%) genera. The most abundant fungal genera were Nakazawaea, Saccharomyces, Lachancea and Candida. These microbial genera are responsible for OMW, OMP and soil toxicity alleviation.

Abstract
This work examined the influence of crop season, extraction system and production site on the composition of fresh olive mill wastewater collected from northern Morocco. ANOVA analysis showed that most of the traits were largely affected by the extraction system (≥60% of total variance). Comparison among extraction systems showed significant differences for all traits, except for chlorides. Three phase centrifugation system (C3) displayed the highest value of total phenols, while all the remaining traits were higher in two phase centrifugation system (C2). Concerning crop seasons, we noticed a general decrease in values of total solids, chemical oxygen demand, chlorides, C/N ratio and total aerobic mesophilic flora, from 2014 to 2016 season; in contrast, an increase in suspended solids, total kjeldahl nitrogen and proteins was detected. OMW with highest total phenols content and then more acidic were collected during 2015 season. Between production sites, Bni Frassen produced OMW with the highest values for salt and total phenols, but the lowest ones were obtained for microbiological traits. OMW from Taza were rich in total kjeldahl nitrogen and proteins. An increase in organic load indicators was observed in Bouchfaa. Principal component analysis (PCA) explained about 82% of total variability: 58%, 16% and 8% for principal component 1 (PC1), PC2 and PC3, respectively. Extraction system fitted the variability of PC1. PC2 was mainly explained by production sites, while PC3 separated crop seasons. Correlation studies showed significant relationships especially among the traits expressing organic load, while microbiological counts were largely associated to total phenols and pH.

Abstract
Gram-negative, aerobic, chemo-organotrophic and bacteriochlorophyll a-containing bacterial strains, KEBCLARHB70RT, KAMCLST3051 and KAMCLST3152, were isolated from the thalli of Cladonia arbuscula and Cladonia stellaris lichens. Cells from the strains were coccoid and reproduced by binary division. They were motile at the early stages of growth and utilized sugars and alcohols. All strains were psychrophilic and acidophilic, capable of growth between pH 3.5 and 7.5 (optimum, pH 5.5), and at 4-30 °C (optimum, 10-15 °C). The major fatty acids were C18 : 1 ω7c and C18 : 0; the lipids were phosphatidylcholines, phosphatidylethanolamines, phosphatidic acids, phosphatidylglycerol, glycolipids, diphosphatidylglycerol and polar lipids with an unknown structure. The quinone was Q-10. The DNA G+C content was 67.8 mol%. Comparative 16S rRNA gene analysis together with other data, supported that the strains, KEBCLARHB70RT, KAMCLST3051 and KAMCLST3152 belonged to the same species. Whole genome analysis of the strain KEBCLARHB70RT and average amino acid identity values confirmed its distinctive phylogenetic position within the family Acetobacteraceae. Phenotypic, ecological and genomic characteristics distinguished strains KEBCLARHB70RT, KAMCLST3051 and KAMCLST3152 from all genera in the family Acetobacteraceae. Therefore, we propose a novel genus and a novel species, Lichenicoccus roseus gen. nov., sp. nov., for these novel Acetobacteraceae members. Strain KEBCLARHB70RT (=KCTC 72321T=VKM B-3305T) has been designated as the type strain.

Abstract
Microbial community dynamics were characterized following combined catalysis and biodegradation treatment trains for mixtures of 1,4-dioxane and chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) in laboratory microcosms. Although a few specific bacterial taxa are capable of removing 1,4-dioxane and individual CVOCs, many microorganisms are inhibited when these contaminants are present in mixtures. Chemical catalysis by tungstated zirconia (WOx/ZrO2) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as a non-selective treatment was designed to achieve nearly 20% 1,4-dioxane and over 60% trichloroethene and 50% dichloroethene removals. Post-catalysis, bioaugmentation with 1,4-dioxane metabolizing bacterial strain,Pseudonocardia dioxanivorans CB1190, removed the remaining 1,4-dioxane. The evolution of the microbial community under different conditions was time-dependent but relatively independent of the concentrations of contaminants. The compositions of microbiomes tended to be similar regardless of complex contaminant mixtures during the biodegradation phase, indicating a r-K strategy transition attributed to the shock experienced during catalysis and the subsequent incubation. The originally dominant genera Pseudomonas and Ralstonia were sensitive to catalytic oxidation, and were overwhelmed by Sphingomonas, Rhodococcus, and other catalyst-tolerant microbes, but microbes capable of biodegradation of organics thrived during the incubation. Methane metabolism, chloroalkane-, and chloroalkene degradation pathways appeared to be responsible for CVOC degradation, based on the identifications of haloacetate dehalogenases, 2-haloacid dehalogenases, and cytochrome P450 family. Network analysis highlighted the potential interspecies competition or commensalism, and dynamics of microbiomes during the biodegradation phase that were in line with shifting predominant genera, confirming the deterministic processes guiding the microbial assembly. Collectively, this study demonstrated that catalysis followed by bioaugmentation is an effective treatment for 1,4-dioxane in the presence of high CVOC concentrations, and it enhanced our understanding of microbial ecological impacts resulting from abiotic-biological treatment trains. These results will be valuable for predicting treatment synergies that lead to cost savings and improve remedial outcomes in short-term active remediation as well as long-term changes to the environmental microbial communities.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the ecotoxicological effects of olive mill waste (OMW) on soil habitat function. To this end, soil samples from OMW evaporating ponds (S1-S5) located at Agareb (Sfax, Tunisia) and a reference soil (R) were collected. The effects of OMW on the springtails Folsomia candida (F.c.), the earthworm species Eisenia fetida (E.f.), Enchytraeus crypticus (E.c.) reproduction and on the soil living microbial communities were investigated. E.f. reproduction and tomato growth assays were performed in the reference soil amended with 0.43 to 7.60 % (wOMW/wref-soil) mass ratios of dried OMW. Changes in microbial function diversity were explored using sole-carbon-source utilization profiles (BiologEcoPlates®). E.f. absolutely avoided (100 %) the most polluted soil (S4) while the F.c. moderately avoided (37.5 ± 7.5 %) the same soil. E.c. reproduction in S4 was significantly lower than in S1, S2, S3 and S5, and was the highest in R soil. Estimated effect concentration EC50 for juveniles' production by E.f., and for tomato fresh weight and chlorophyll content were 0.138, 0.6 and 1.13 %, respectively. Community level physiological profiles (CLPPs) were remarkably different in R and S4 and a higher similarity was observed between soils S1, S2, S3 and S5. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that differences between soil microbial functional diversity were mainly due to high polyphenol concentrations, while the salinity negatively affected E.c. reproduction in OMW contaminated soils. These results clearly reflect the high toxicity of dried OMW when added to agricultural soils, causing severe threats to terrestrial ecosystem functions and services provided by invertebrates and microbial communities.

Abstract
Olive mill wastes (OMWs) are high-strength organic effluents, which upon disposal can degrade soil and water quality, negatively affecting aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The main purpose of this review paper is to provide an up-to-date knowledge concerning the microbial communities identified over the past 20 years in olive mill wastes using both culture-dependent and independent approaches. A database survey of 16S rRNA gene sequences (585 records in total) obtained from olive mill waste environments revealed the dominance of members of Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria. Independent studies confirmed that OMW microbial communities' structure is cultivar dependent. On the other hand, the detection of fecal bacteria and other potential human pathogens in OMWs is of major concern and deserves further examination. Despite the fact that the degradation and detoxification of the olive mill wastes have been mostly investigated through the application of known bacterial and fungal species originated from other environmental sources, the biotechnological potential of indigenous microbiota should be further exploited in respect to olive mill waste bioremediation and inactivation of plant and human pathogens. The implementation of omic and metagenomic approaches will further elucidate disposal issues of olive mill wastes.

Abstract
Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is an emerging technology to treat wet biomasses aimed at producing a biochar material. Herein, olive mill wastewater (OMW) was subjected to HTC. Mass balance considerations provide evidence that the yield of biochar is low (~30%, w/w), which is associated with a low fraction of carbohydrates in OMW. The combination of different preparation schemes, pre-chromatographic derivatization reactions and GC/MS analysis for the analysis of organic compounds in aqueous HTC-solutions allowed to identify and quantify a wide array of analytes which belong either to intrinsic constituents of OMW or to characteristic HTC-breakdown products. Biophenols, such as hydroxyl-tyrosol (OH-Tyr), tyrosol (Tyr) account for the most abundant members of the first group. Most abundant breakdown products include phenol and benzenediols as well as short-chain organic acids. Secoiridoids, such as decarbomethoxy ligostride aglycon and decarbomethoxy oleuropein aglycon, all of them being typical components of OMW, are less abundant in HTC-solutions.

Abstract
Culture-dependent and -independent approaches were employed to identify the bacterial community structure from olive-mill wastewater produced from three olive-fruit varieties. The 233 bacterial isolates recovered were phylogenetically related to 38 members of Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, α-Proteobacteria, β-Proteobacteria, γ-Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes. Employing a novel microarray-based approach (PhyloChip) a high bacterial diversity was revealed consisting of 18 different phyla with representatives from 99 different families. The bacterial diversity in olive-mill wastewater from the three olive tree varieties was dominated by α-, β-, γ-, δ-, ε-Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Chloroflexi, Cyanobacteria, and Actinobacteria. This in-depth analysis of the indigenous microbiota indicated a cultivar-specific bacterial profile. Interestingly, the common bacterial taxa present in all three varieties examined were restricted indicating that the bacterial communities present in the olive-mill wastewater are greatly influenced by the olive-fruit variety.
