Abstract
Sustainable active food packaging is essential to reduce the use of plastics, preserve food quality and minimize the environmental impact. Humic substances (HS) are rich in redox-active compounds, such as quinones, phenols, carboxyl, and hydroxyl moieties, making them functional additives for biopolymeric matrices, such as poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV). Herein, composites made by incorporating different amounts of HS into PHBV were developed using the electrospinning technology and converted into homogeneous and continuous films by a thermal post-treatment to obtain a bioactive and biodegradable layer which could be part of a multilayer food packaging solution. The morphology, thermal, optical, mechanical, antioxidant and barrier properties of the resulting PHBV-based films have been evaluated, as well as the antifungal activity against Aspergillus flavus and Candida albicans and the antimicrobial properties against both Gram (+) and Gram (-) bacterial strains. HS show great potential as natural additives for biopolymer matrices, since they confer antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties to the resulting materials. In addition, barrier, optical and mechanical properties highlighted that the obtained films are suitable for sustainable active packaging. Therefore, the electrospinning methodology is a promising and sustainable approach to give biowaste a new life through the development of multifunctional materials suitable in the active bio-packaging.

Abstract
Spent mushroom substrate (SMS) is the residual biomass generated after harvesting the fruitbodies of edible/medicinal fungi. Disposal of SMS, the main by-product of the mushroom cultivation process, often leads to serious environmental problems and is financially demanding. Efficient recycling and valorization of SMS are crucial for the sustainable development of the mushroom industry in the frame of the circular economy principles. The physical properties and chemical composition of SMS are a solid fundament for developing several applications, and recent literature shows an increasing research interest in exploiting that inherent potential. This review provides a thorough outlook on SMS exploitation possibilities and discusses critically recent findings related to specific applications in plant and mushroom cultivation, animal husbandry, and recovery of enzymes and bioactive compounds.

Abstract
The search for new sustainable alternatives for plant disease control has gained interest in the last decades. Compost extracts are nowadays considered a remarkable alternative to agrochemicals due to their biopesticidal properties. However, these properties could be affected by the different variables of extraction protocols and by starting compost. This work focused on the physicochemical and biological characterization of compost extracts obtained from a wide range of composted materials and different extraction protocols (CEP). CEP-1 and CEP-4 involved incubation at 20 °C for 48 h and 14 days, respectively; CEP-2 incubation for 24 h at 40 °C; while CEP-3 were incubated for 12 h at 70 °C. Electrical conductivity, pH, total organic carbon (TOC) and phenolic content were determined as well as the actinobacterial count and enzyme profiles related to plant pathogen suppression. Additionally, the influence of the different materials and protocols on the in vitro growth inhibition of Alternaria alternata and Botrytis cinerea was determined. The starting materials and extraction protocols significantly influenced the physicochemical and biological characteristics of extracts. Treatments based on long incubation times at 20 °C, as well as those based on short incubation times at 40 °C, resulted in extracts with increased suppressive properties. However, extracts derived from CEP-3 protocol were characterized by high phenolic and TOC content, low functional biodiversity, and a more discreet antagonistic capacity. Therefore, the development and optimization of suitable extraction protocols could lead to compost extracts with increased phytoprotective capacities, thus becoming an effective and sustainable alternative to chemical inputs.

Abstract
The abuse of chemical fertilizers in recent decades has led the promotion of less harmful alternatives, such as compost or aqueous extracts obtained from it. Therefore, it is essential to develop liquid biofertilizers, which in addition of being stable and useful for fertigation and foliar application in intensive agriculture had a remarkable phytostimulant extracts. For this purpose, a collection of aqueous extracts was obtained by applying four different Compost Extraction Protocols (CEP1, CEP2, CEP3, CEP4) in terms of incubation time, temperature and agitation of compost samples from agri-food waste, olive mill waste, sewage sludge and vegetable waste. Subsequently, a physicochemical characterization of the obtained set was performed in which pH, electrical conductivity and Total Organic Carbon (TOC) were measured. In addition, a biological characterization was also carried out by calculating the Germination Index (GI) and determining the Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD5). Furthermore, functional diversity was studied using the Biolog EcoPlates technique. The results obtained confirmed the great heterogeneity of the selected raw materials. However, it was observed that the less aggressive treatments in terms of temperature and incubation time, such as CEP1 (48 h, room temperature (RT)) or CEP4 (14 days, RT), provided aqueous compost extracts with better phytostimulant characteristics than the starting composts. It was even possible to find a compost extraction protocol that maximize the beneficial effects of compost. This was the case of CEP1, which improved the GI and reduced the phytotoxicity in most of the raw materials analyzed. Therefore, the use of this type of liquid organic amendment could mitigate the phytotoxic effect of several composts being a good alternative to the use of chemical fertilizers.

Abstract
Mature composts and their water-based extracts, known as aerated compost teas (ACTs), are biofertilizers that share bioactive effects like soil restoration and plant health promotion, widely used for sustainable agriculture. Bioactive effects of compost and ACTs could be associated with their physicochemical and biological characteristics, like carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio and microbiota structure respectively. In our study, we elaborated ACTs using mature homemade compost, wheat bran, and grass clippings, following the C/N ratio criteria. Irrigation of tomato plantlets with ACT whose C/N ratio was close to the expected C/N ratio for mature compost evidenced plant growth promotion. Exploring the bacterial microbiota of elaborated ACTs and origin compost revealed significant structural differences, including phyla involved in N mineralization and free-living N-fixing bacteria. Therefore, ACTs harbor diverse bacterial microbiota involved in the N cycle, which would enrich plant and soil bacterial communities at the taxonomic and functional levels. Furthermore, ACTs are considered a part of agroecological and circular economy approaches.

Abstract
Biological control of plant diseases is important in organic greenhouse vegetable production, where fungicide use is limited. Organic producers use microbially diverse substrates, including composts, as media for plant growth. Previous research into the impact of vermicompost on the efficacy of applied biocontrol agents is limited. An in vitro assay was developed to test the efficacy of two biological control agents in a competitive microbial background. Suppression of the pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-cucumerinum by Clonostachys rosea f. catenulata (Gliocladium catenulatum strain J1446 [Prestop]) and Bacillus subtilis strain QST 713 (Rhapsody), was assessed on agar media amended with aerated vermicompost tea (ACT). Pathogen growth was reduced more by C. rosea than ACT alone, and C. rosea was equally effective when combined with ACT. In contrast, B. subtilis reduced pathogen growth less than ACT and, when combined, reduced pathogen growth no more than ACT alone. Both biocontrol agents were similarly tested with ACT against F. oxysporum f. sp. radicis-cucumerinum and Rhizoctonia solani on cucumber and radish. Additive, neutral, and antagonistic responses, depending on host, pathogen, and biocontrol agent, were observed. ACT alone provided more consistent disease suppression on cucumber compared with B. subtilis or C. rosea. In combination, disease suppression was most often better than each biocontrol alone but not better than ACT alone. ACT had antagonistic or additive interactions with C. rosea in the radish/R. solani pathosystem, depending on the experiment. The specific and general suppression of plant diseases by biological control agents in microbially rich environments is variable and warrants further study.

Abstract
Mycoparasites cause heavy losses in commercial mushroom farms worldwide. The negative impact of fungal diseases such as dry bubble (Lecanicillium fungicola), cobweb (Cladobotryum spp.), wet bubble (Mycogone perniciosa), and green mold (Trichoderma spp.) constrains yield and harvest quality while reducing the cropping surface or damaging basidiomes. Currently, in order to fight fungal diseases, preventive measurements consist of applying intensive cleaning during cropping and by the end of the crop cycle, together with the application of selective active substances with proved fungicidal action. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the redundant application of the same fungicides has been conducted to the occurrence of resistant strains, hence, reviewing reported evidence of resistance occurrence and introducing unconventional treatments is worthy to pave the way towards the design of integrated disease management (IDM) programs. This work reviews aspects concerning chemical control, reduced sensitivity to fungicides, and additional control methods, including genomic resources for data mining, to cope with mycoparasites in the mushroom industry.

Abstract
Outbreaks of gummy stem blight (GSB), an emerging seed pumpkin disease, have increased in number and have become more widespread in recent years. Previously we reported that Stagonosporopsis cucurbitacearum (Sc.) is the dominant fungal cause of pumpkin seedling GSB in Northeast China, where it has greatly reduced crop yields in that region. Here, high-throughput whole-genome sequencing and assembly of the Sc. genome were conducted toward revealing pathogenic molecular regulatory mechanisms involved in fungal growth and development. Zq-1 as representative Sc. strain, DNA of Zq-1was prepared for genomic sequencing, we obtained 5.24 Gb of high-quality genomic sequence data via PacBio RS II sequencing. After sequence data was processed to filter out low quality reads, a hierarchical genome-assembly process was employed that generated a genome sequence of 35.28 Mb in size. A total of 9844 genes were predicted, including 237 non-coding RNAs, 1024 genes encoding proteins with signal peptides, 2066 transmembrane proteins and 756 secretory proteins.Transcriptional identification revealed 54 differentially expressed secretory proteins. Concurrently, 605, 130 and 2869 proteins were matched in the proprietary databases Carbohydrate-Active EnZymes database (CAZyme), Transporter Classification Database (TCDB) and Pathogen-Host Interactions database (PHI), respectively. And 96 and 36 DEGs were identified form PHI database and CAZyme database, respectively. In addition, contig00011.93 was an up-regulated DEG involving ATP-binding cassette metabolism in the procession of infection. In order to test relevance of gene predictions to GSB, DEGs with potential pathogenic relevance were revealed through transcriptome data analysis of Sc. strains pre- and post-infection of pumpkin. Interestingly, Sc. and Leptosphaeria maculans (Lm.) exhibited relatively similar with genome lengths, numbers of protein-coding genes and other characteristics. This work provides a foundation for future exploration of additional Sc. gene functions toward the development of more effective GSB control strategies.

Abstract
Phosphoric acid production and olive oil production are among the most important economical sectors in Tunisia. However, they generate huge amounts of wastes (phosphogypsum, olive mill waste water, and olive pomace). In a previous study, we used phosphogypsum (PG), in co-composting with organic wastes. Three composts were produced; their PG content was of 0 (AT), 10 (A10), and 30% (A30). In the present study, we focused on their derived compost teas. The physico-chemical characterization of the different compost teas showed that those from A10 and A30 composts presented higher P and Ca contents than that from control one (AT). The microbial characterization using DGGE showed a noticeable microbial diversity in the different compost teas and that the addition of 10% and 30% PG in the compost had different effects on the compost tea microbial diversity. The identification results showed that the addition of 10 and 30% of PG did not affect the presence of PGPR (plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria) and fungal soil antagonists in the compost teas. Two PGPRs were isolated from AT and A30 compost teas, and their effect on the growth of potato plants in vitro was evaluated.
