Remediation of soil cadmium pollution by biomineralization using microbial-induced precipitation: a review

The protective effect of luteolin on cadmium induced liver intestinal toxicity in chicken by Gut-liver axis regulation

Environmental pollution poses a significant challenge to the poultry industry, leading to substantial losses and adverse effects on the health, production, and performance of avian species. In recent years, there has been growing interest in exploring natural compounds with potential protective effects against cadmium (Cd)-induced toxicity. Luteolin (LUT), a flavonoid found in various plants, has been studied for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective properties. In this study, Su green shell grass chickens were divided into 4 groups: control, LUT (150 mg LUT), Cd (100 mg CdCl2), and Cd + LUT (100 mg CdCl2 + 150 mg LUT) groups for 1 month, respectively. The present study revealed that LUT maintained the morphology and functional activity of the liver and intestine. LUT alleviated Cd-induced impairment in the liver and intestinal biochemical indicators, suppressed Cd-induced liver fibrosis, mitigated liver and intestinal tissue damage. Additionally, LUT reduced oxidative stress and regulated the Cd-induced impairment in trace elements of the liver and intestine. Furthermore, LUT reduced Cd-induced liver inflammation, restored Cd-induced intestinal barrier function, and normalized Cd-induced serum proteins, including changes in the content of glutamyltranspeptidase. Moreover, LUT maintained Cd-induced disruption of gut microbiota and alleviated bacterial dysbiosis. Overall, these findings suggest that LUT holds promise as a potential therapeutic agent for mitigating the adverse effects of Cd-induced toxicity in poultry, by preserving liver and intestinal health, reducing oxidative stress, inflammation, and restoring gut microbiota balance.

Microbes' role in environmental pollution and remediation: a bioeconomy focus approach

Bioremediation stands as a promising solution amid the escalating challenges posed by environmental pollution. Over the past 25 years, the influx of synthetic chemicals and hazardous contaminants into ecosystems has required innovative approaches for mitigation and restoration. The resilience of these compounds stems from their non-natural existence, distressing both human and environmental health. Microbes take center stage in this scenario, demonstrating their ability of biodegradation to catalyze environmental remediation. Currently, the scientific community supports a straight connection between biorefinery and bioremediation concepts to encourage circular bio/economy practices. This review aimed to give a pre-overview of the state of the art regarding the main microorganisms employed in bioremediation processes and the different bioremediation approaches applied. Moreover, focus has been given to the implementation of bioremediation as a novel approach to agro-industrial waste management, highlighting how it is possible to reduce environmental pollution while still obtaining value-added products with commercial value, meeting the goals of a circular bioeconomy. The main drawbacks and challenges regarding the feasibility of bioremediation were also reported.

Halophilic archaea as tools for bioremediation technologies

Haloarchaea are extremophilic microorganisms belonging to the Archaea domain that require high salt concentrations to be alive, thus inhabiting ecosystems like salty ponds, salty marshes, or extremely salty lagoons. They are more abundantly and widely distributed worldwide than initially expected. Most of them are grouped into two families: Halobacteriaceae and Haloferacaceae. The extreme conditions under which haloarchaea survive contribute to their metabolic and molecular adaptations, thus making them good candidates for the design of bioremediation strategies to treat brines, salty water, and saline soils contaminated with toxic compounds such as nitrate, nitrite, oxychlorates such as perchlorate and chlorate, heavy metals, hydrocarbons, and aromatic compounds. New advances in understanding haloarchaea physiology, metabolism, biochemistry, and molecular biology suggest that biochemical pathways related to nitrogen and carbon, metals, hydrocarbons, or aromatic compounds can be used for bioremediation proposals. This review analyses the novelty of the most recent results showing the capability of some haloarchaeal species to assimilate, modify, or degrade toxic compounds for most living beings. Several examples of the role of these microorganisms in the treatment of polluted brine or salty soils are also discussed in connection with circular economy-based processes. Rhodopseudomonas palustris shapes bacterial community, reduces Cd bioavailability in Cd contaminated flooding paddy soil, and improves rice performance

Photosynthetic bacteria (PSB) are suitable to live and remediate cadmium (Cd) in the slightly oxygenated or anaerobic flooding paddy field. However, there is currently limited study on the inhibition of Cd accumulation in rice by PSB, and the relevant mechanisms has yet to be elucidated. In the current study, we firstly used Rhodopseudomonas palustris SC06 (a typical PSB) as research target and combined physiology, biochemistry, microbiome and metabolome to evaluate the mechanisms of remeding Cd pollution in paddy field and inhibiting Cd accumulation in rice. Microbiome analysis results revealed that intensive inoculation with R. palustris SC06 successfully survived and multiplied in flooding paddy soil, and significantly increased the relatively abundance of anaerobic bacteria including Desulfobacterota, Anaerolineaceae, Geobacteraceae, and Gemmatimonadaceae by 46.40 %, 45.00 %, 50.12 %, and 21.30 %, respectively. Simultaneously, the structure of microbial community was regulated to maintain relative stability in the rhizosphere soil of rice under Cd stress. In turn, these bacteria communities reduced bioavailable Cd and enhanced residual Cd in soil, and induced the upregulation of sugar and organic acids in the rice roots, which further inhibited Cd uptake in rice seedlings, and dramatically improved the photosynthetic efficiency in the leaves and the activities of antioxidative enzymes in the roots. Finally, Cd content of the roots, stems, leaves, and grains significantly decreased by 38.14 %, 69.10 %, 83.40 %, and 37.24 % comparing with the control, respectively. This study provides a new strategy for the remediation of Cd-contaminated flooding paddy fields and the safe production of rice.

Penicillium oxalicum induced phosphate precipitation enhanced cadmium (Cd) immobilization by simultaneously accelerating Cd biosorption and biomineralization

Soil cadmium (Cd) is immobilized by the progressing biomineralization process as microbial induced phosphate precipitation (MIPP), which is regulated by phosphate (P) solubilizing microorganisms and P sources. However, little attention has been paid to the implications of Cd biosorption during MIPP. In this study, the newly isolated Penicillium oxalicum could immobilize 5.4-12.6 % of Cd2+, while the presence of hydroxyapatite (HAP) considerably enhanced Cd2+ immobilization in P. oxalicum and reached over 99 % Cd2+ immobilization efficiency within 7 days. Compared to P. oxalicum mono inoculation, MIPP dramatically boosted Cd biosorption and biomineralization efficiency by 71 % and 16 % after 96 h cultivation, respectively. P. oxalicum preferred to absorbing Cd2+ and reaching maximum Cd2+ biosorption efficiency of 87.8 % in the presence of HAP. More surface groups in P. oxalicum and HAP mineral involved adsorption which resulted in the formation of Cd-apatite [Ca8Cd2(PO4)6(OH)2] via ion exchange. Intracellular S2-, secreted organic acids and soluble P via HAP solubilization complexed with Cd2+, progressively mineralized into Cd5(PO4)3OH, Cd(H2PO4)2, C4H6CdO4 and CdS. These results suggested that Cd2+ immobilization was enhanced simultaneously by the accelerated biosorption and biomineralization during P. oxalicum induced P precipitation. Our findings revealed new mechanisms of Cd immobilization in MIPP process and offered clues for remediation practices at metal contaminated sites.

Comprehensive bioremediation effect of phosphorus-mineralized bacterium Enterobacter sp. PMB-5 on cadmium contaminated soil-crop system

Phosphate-mineralizing bacteria (PMBs) have been widely studied by inducing phosphate heavy metal precipitation, but current researches neglect to study their effects on soil-microbe-crop systems on cadmium (Cd) contaminated. Based on this, a strain PMB, Enterobacter sp. PMB-5, was inoculated into Cd contaminated pots to detect soil characteristics, Cd occurrence forms, soil biological activities, plant physiological and biochemical indicators. The results showed that the inoculation of strain PMB-5 significantly increased the available phosphorus content (85.97%-138.64%), Cd-residual fraction (11.04%-29.73%), soil enzyme activities (31.94%-304.63%), plant biomass (6.10%-59.81%), while decreased the state of Cd-HOAc (11.50%-31.17%) and plant bioconcentration factor (23.76%-44.24%). These findings indicated that strain PMB-5 could perform the function of phosphorus solubilization to realize the immobilization of Cd in the complex soil environment. Moreover, SEM-EDS, FTIR, XPS, and XRD analysis revealed that strain PMB-5 does not significantly alter the soil morphology, structure, elemental distribution, and chemical composition, which suggested that remediation of Cd contamination using strain PMB-5 would not further burden the soil. This research implies that PMB-5 could be a safe and effective bioinoculant for remediating Cd-contaminated soils, contributing to the sustainable management of soil health in contaminated environments.

Factors influencing cadmium accumulation in plants after inoculation with rhizobacteria: A meta-analysis

Rhizobacteria have the potential to enhance phytoremediation by generating substances that stimulate plant development and influence the effectiveness of cadmium (Cd) remediation by adjusting Cd availability via metal solubilization. Furthermore, rhizobacterial inoculation affects plants' metal tolerance and uptake by controlling the expression of several metal transporters, channels, and metal chelator genes. A meta-analysis was conducted to quantitatively assess the effects of rhizobacteria on Cd accumulation in plants using 207 individual observations from 47 articles. This meta-analysis showed an average Cd concentration increase of 8.09 % in plant cells under rhizobacteria treatment. The effects of different plant-microbial interactions on the bioaccumulation of Cd in plants varied. Selecting the proper rhizobacteria-plant association is essential to affect Cd buildup in plant roots and shoots. A more extended planting period (>30 days) and a suitable soil pH (<6, 7-8) would aid in the phytoextraction of Cd from the soil. This study comprehensively and quantitatively investigated the effects of plants, rhizobacteria, soil pH, planting period, experimental sites, and plant organs on plant Cd accumulation. According to the analysis of explanatory factors, plant species, planting period, soil pH, and rhizobacteria species have a more decisive influence on Cd accumulation than other factors. The results provide information for future research on the successful remediation of soils contaminated with Cd. More investigations are required to elucidate the intricate interactions between plant roots and microorganisms.

Mechanisms of low cadmium accumulation in crops: A comprehensive overview from rhizosphere soil to edible parts

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal often found in soil and agricultural products. Due to its high mobility, Cd poses a significant health risk when absorbed by crops, a crucial component of the human diet. This absorption primarily occurs through roots and leaves, leading to Cd accumulation in edible parts of the plant. Our research aimed to understand the mechanisms behind the reduced Cd accumulation in certain crop cultivars through an extensive review of the literature. Crops employ various strategies to limit Cd influx from the soil, including rhizosphere microbial fixation and altering root cell metabolism. Additional mechanisms include membrane efflux, specific transport, chelation, and detoxification, facilitated by metalloproteins such as the natural resistance-associated macrophage protein (Nramp) family, heavy metal P-type ATPases (HMA), zinc-iron permease (ZIP), and ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters. This paper synthesizes differences in Cd accumulation among plant varieties, presents methods for identifying cultivars with low Cd accumulation, and explores the unique molecular biology of Cd accumulation. Overall, this review provides a comprehensive resource for managing agricultural lands with lower contamination levels and supports the development of crops engineered to accumulate minimal amounts of Cd.

Different survival strategies of the phosphate-mineralizing bacterium Enterobacter sp. PMB-5 in response to cadmium stress: Biomineralization, biosorption, and bioaccumulation

The phosphate-mineralizing bacteria (PMBs) has shown great potential as a sustainable solution to support pollution remediation through its induced mineralization capacity. However, few studies have been conducted on the mechanism of cadmium (Cd) tolerance in PMBs. In this study, a PMB strain, Enterobacter sp. PMB-5, screened from Cd-contaminated rhizosphere soil, has high resistance to Cd (540 - 1220 mg/L) and solubilized phosphate (232.08 mg/L). The removal experiments showed that the strain PMB-5 removed 71.69-98.24% and 34.83-76.36% of Cd with and without biomineralization, respectively. The characterization result of SEM, EDS, TEM, XPS and XRD revealed that PMB-5 induced Cd to form amorphous phosphate precipitation through biomineralization and adopted different survival strategies, including biomineralization, bioaccumulation, and biosorption to resistance Cd in the microbial induced phosphate precipitation (MIPP) system and the non-MIPP system, respectively. Moreover, the results of whole genome sequencing and qRT-PCR indicated that phosphorus metabolism genes such as pst, pit, phn, ugp, ppk, etc. and heavy metal tolerance genes (including ion transport, ion efflux, redox, antioxidant stress), such as czcD, zntA, mgtA, mgtC, katE, SOD2, dsbA, cysM, etc. were molecular for the PMB-5 mineralization and Cd tolerance of PMB-5. Together, our findings suggested Enterobacter sp. PMB-5 is a potential target for developing more effective bioinoculants for Cd contamination remediation.

Potential use of two Serratia strains for cadmium remediation based on microbiologically induced carbonate precipitation and their cadmium resistance

Cadmium (Cd) presence and bioavailability in soils is a serious concern for cocoa producers. Cocoa plants can bioaccumulate Cd that can reach humans through the food chain, thus posing a threat to human health, as Cd is a highly toxic metal. Currently, microbiologically induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) by the ureolytic path has been proposed as an effective technique for Cd remediation. In this work, the Cd remediation potential and Cd resistance of two ureolytic bacteria, Serratia sp. strains 4.1a and 5b, were evaluated. The growth of both Serratia strains was inhibited at 4 mM Cd(II) in the culture medium, which is far higher than the Cd content that can be found in the soils targeted for remediation. Regarding removal efficiency, for an initial concentration of 0.15 mM Cd(II) in liquid medium, the maximum removal percentages for Serratia sp. 4.1.a and 5b were 99.3% and 99.57%, respectively. Their precipitates produced during Cd removal were identified as calcite by X-ray diffraction. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis showed that a portion of Cd was immobilized in this matrix. Finally, the presence of a partial gene from the czc operon, involved in Cd resistance, was observed in Serratia sp. 5b. The expression of this gene was found to be unaffected by the presence of Cd(II), and upregulated in the presence of urea. This work is one of the few to report the use of bacterial strains of the Serratia genus for Cd remediation by MICP, and apparently the first one to report differential expression of a Cd resistance gene due to the presence of urea.

Combined microbe-plant remediation of cadmium in saline-alkali soil assisted by fungal mycelium-derived biochar

Cadmium contamination in saline-alkali soil is becoming a great concern. Combined microbe-plant remediation is an economic way to treat this contamination, but is compromised by its low cadmium-removing capacity. In this study, the novel fungus-derived biochar was prepared to enhance the salt-tolerant bacterium-plant remediation of cadmium-contaminated saline-alkali soil. This biochar was prepared by pre-incubation of living Trichoderma atroviride hyphae with imidazole and further heating at 500 °C for 1 h. The obtained fungus-derived nitrogen-doped biochar (FBioCN) exhibited the high affinity to bacterial cells, leading to efficient colonization of exogenous salt-tolerant bacteria (e.g., Rhizobacter sp. and Sphingomonas sp.) on Amaranthus hypochondriacus roots. During culturing of the plants in the cadmium-contaminated saline-alkali soil, FBioCN drastically remodeled the rhizosphere microbiome, leading to enhance colonization of the exogeneous salt-tolerant bacteria, and increase bacterial diversity. The combination of FBioCN and the exogeneous bacteria further improved the activity of rhizosphere functional enzymes, protected the plants from the multiple stress, and promoted cadmium transport from the soil to the plants. Consequently, FBioCN together with the salt-tolerant bacteria drastically improved cadmium removal from the saline-alkali soil, with the percent of cadmium removal at the rhizosphere region increasing from 35.1% to 95.1%. This study sheds a light on the application of fungus-derived biochar in combined microbe-plant remediation in saline-alkali soil.

Bacteria-loaded biochar for the immobilization of cadmium in an alkaline-polluted soil

The combination of biochar and bacteria is a promising strategy for the remediation of Cd-polluted soils. However, the synergistic mechanisms of biochar and bacteria for Cd immobilization remain unclear. In this study, the experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of the combination of biochar and Pseudomonas sp. AN-B15, on Cd immobilization, soil enzyme activity, and soil microbiome. The results showed that biochar could directly reduce the motility of Cd through adsorption and formation of CdCO3 precipitates, thereby protecting bacteria from Cd toxicity in the solution. In addition, bacterial growth further induces the formation of CdCO3 and CdS and enhances Cd adsorption by bacterial cells, resulting in a higher Cd removal rate. Thus, bacterial inoculation significantly enhances Cd removal in the presence of biochar in the solution. Moreover, soil incubation experiments showed that bacteria-loaded biochar significantly reduced soil exchangeable Cd in comparison with other treatments by impacting soil microbiome. In particular, bacteria-loaded biochar increased the relative abundance of Bacillus, Lysobacter, and Pontibacter, causing an increase in pH, urease, and arylsulfatase, thereby passivating soil exchangeable Cd and improving soil environmental quality in the natural alkaline Cd-contaminated soil. Overall, this study provides a systematic understanding of the synergistic mechanisms of biochar and bacteria for Cd immobilization in soil and new insights into the selection of functional strain for the efficient remediation of the contaminated environments by bacterial biochar composite.

Phenotypic and Proteomic Insights into Differential Cadmium Accumulation in Maize Kernels

The contamination of agricultural soil with cadmium (Cd), a heavy metal, poses a significant environmental challenge, affecting crop growth, development, and human health. Previous studies have established the pivotal role of the ZmHMA3 gene, a P-type ATPase heavy metal transporter, in determining variable Cd accumulation in maize grains among 513 inbred lines. To decipher the molecular mechanism underlying mutation-induced phenotypic differences mediated by ZmHMA3, we conducted a quantitative tandem mass tag (TMT)-based proteomic analysis of immature maize kernels. This analysis aimed to identify differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in wild-type B73 and ZmHMA3 null mutant under Cd stress. The findings demonstrated that ZmHMA3 accumulated higher levels of Cd compared to B73 when exposed to varying Cd concentrations in the soil. In comparison to soil with a low Cd concentration, B73 and ZmHMA3 exhibited 75 and 142 DEPs, respectively, with 24 common DEPs shared between them. ZmHMA3 showed a higher induction of upregulated genes related to Cd stress than B73. Amino sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism was specifically enriched in B73, while phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, nitrogen metabolism, and glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism appeared to play a more significant role in ZmHMA3. This study provides proteomics insights into unraveling the molecular mechanism underlying the differences in Cd accumulation in maize kernels.

Harnessing sulfate-reducing bacteria with plants growing to revitalize metal-tainted coal mine soils in Midwest China: metal sequestration performance, ecological networking interaction, and functional enzymatic prediction

Heavy metal contamination from coal mining calls for advanced bioremediation, i.e., using sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) technology. Yet, the interaction of SRB with native soil microbiota during metal sequestration, especially in the presence of plants, remains ambiguous. In this study, we assessed the metal sequestration capabilities, ecological network interactions, and enzymatic functions in soils treated with a predominant SRB consortium, mainly Desulfovibrio (14 OTUs, 42.15%) and Desulfobulbus (7 OTUs, 42.27%), alongside Acacia dealbata (AD) and Pisum sativum (PS) plants. The SRB consortium notably enhanced the immobilization of metals such as Zn, Cu, As, and Pb in soil, with the conversion of metals to residual forms rising from 23.47 to 75.98%. Plant inclusion introduced variability, potentially due to changes in root exudates under metal stress. While AD flourished, PS demonstrated significant enhancement in conjunction with SRB, despite initial challenges. Comprehensive microbial analyses revealed the pivotal role of SRB in influencing microbial networking, underpinning critical ecological links. This interplay between plants and SRB not only enhanced microbial diversity but also enriched soil nutrients. Further, enzymatic assessments, highlighting enzymes like NADH:ubiquinone reductase and non-specific serine/threonine protein kinase, reinforced contribution of SRB to energy metabolism and environmental resilience of the entire soil microbial community. Overall, this research underscores the potential of SRB-driven bioremediation in revitalizing soils affected by coal mining.

Potential functions of engineered nanomaterials in cadmium remediation in soil-plant system: A review

Soil cadmium (Cd) contamination is a global environmental issue facing agriculture. Under certain conditions, the stable Cd that bound to soil particles tend to be remobilized and absorbed into plants, which is seriously toxic to plant growth and threat food safety. Engineering nanomaterials (ENMs) has attracted increasing attentions in the remediation of Cd pollution in soil-plant system due to their excellent properties with nano-scale size. Herein, this article firstly systematically summarized Cd transformation in soil, transport in soil-plant system, and the toxic effects in plants, following which the functions of ENMs in these processes to remediate Cd pollution are comprehensively reviewed, including immobilization of Cd in soil, inhibition in Cd uptake, transport, and accumulation, as well as physiological detoxication to Cd stress. Finally, some issues to be further studied were raised to promote nano-remediation technology in the environment. This review provides a significant reference for the practical application of ENMs in remediation of Cd pollution in soil, and contributes to sustainable development of agriculture.

Ca2+ addition facilitates the shell repair with eggs production of Pomacea canaliculata through biomineralization and food intaking regulation

Pomacea canaliculata was by far one of the most harmful invasive organisms in the world, causing serious harm to aquatic crops and ecosystem. Calcium carbonate is a common component of aquatic environment, which is important for the growth of Pomacea canaliculata. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the response characteristics of P. canaliculata suffered shell breakage to the addition of calcium carbonate in water environment. In this experiment, we explored the effects of calcium carbonate addition on the P. canaliculata shell repair rate, food intake, egg production, shell strength, and calcium content through breaking the snails shell and the addition of calcium carbonate treatment. The results showed that snail broken-shell repaired mostly within 21 days. The snails experienced a significant increase in shell repair rates during earlier days of the treatment, especially for female snails. Food intake of snails exhibited different patterns when their shells were broken and calcium carbonate was added. Shell breakage treatment combined with calcium carbonate addition significantly increased the diameter of snail eggs compared with the control and the calcium carbonate addition treatment without shell-broken snail group. There was no significant difference in shell strength or calcium content of male snails between the treatments. The study suggests that P. canaliculata exhibits a sex-dependent response pattern when subjected to shell damage and calcium carbonate addition. The findings can provide some references to better understand the invasion mechanism and survival strategy of the P. canaliculata.

VPS41-mediated incomplete autophagy aggravates cadmium-induced apoptosis in mouse hepatocytes

Exposure to cadmium (Cd), an environmental heavy metal contaminant, is a serious threat to global health that increases the burden of liver diseases. Autophagy and apoptosis are important in Cd-induced liver injury. However, the regulatory mechanisms involved in the progression of Cd-induced liver damage are poorly understood. Herein, we investigated the role of vacuolar protein sorting 41 (VPS41) in Cd-induced autophagy and apoptosis in hepatocytes. We used targeted VPS41 regulation to elucidate the mechanism of Cd-induced hepatotoxicity. Our data showed that Cd triggered incomplete autophagy by downregulating VPS41, aggravating Cd-induced hepatocyte apoptosis. Mechanistically, Cd-induced VPS41 downregulation interfered with the mTORC1-TFEB/TFE3 axis, leading to an imbalance in autophagy initiation and termination and abnormal activation of autophagy. Moreover, Cd-induced downregulation of VPS41 inhibited autophagosome-lysosome fusion, leading to blocked autophagic flux. This triggers incomplete autophagy, which causes excessive P62 accumulation, accelerating Caspase-9 (CASP9) cleavage. Incomplete autophagy blocks clearance of cleaved CASP9 (CL-CASP9) via the autophagic pathway, promoting apoptosis. Notably, VPS41 overexpression alleviated Cd-induced incomplete autophagy and apoptosis, independent of the homotypic fusion and protein sorting complex. This study provides a new mechanistic understanding of the relationship between autophagy and apoptosis, suggesting that VPS41 is a new therapeutic target for Cd-induced liver damage.

Cadmium Transforms Astrocytes into the A1 Subtype via Inducing Gap Junction Protein Connexin 43 into the Nucleus

Cadmium is highly toxic and present in the environment and can be accumulated among various levels of the food chain. Both humans and animals are at risk from toxicity associated with cadmium. However, the neurological endpoint caused by cadmium has not been revealed. The aim of our research is to explore the potential target of cadmium attack when causing neurotoxicity. 80 male chickens (one day old, weighing 36.49 ± 2.88 g) were randomly divided into four groups and independently treated with 0, 35, 70, or 140 mg/kg CdCl2 in diet for 90 days. The result showed that the striatum was damaged due to a high dose of cadmium in the brain, which was characterized by degeneration of neurons and astrocyte dysfunction. Transcriptome analysis demonstrated that striatal astrocytes were transformed into the A1 state under cadmium exposure. Deeper investigation revealed that the internalization of gap junction protein connexin 43 was responsible for this transformation. Eventually, we can conclude that the internalized gap junction protein connexin 43 of astrocytes is the target of cadmium anchoring, and this process was accompanied by the transformation of astrocytes into the A1 subtype. This study provides a new direction for exploring the effects of cadmium on the nervous system and the treatment of subsequent nervous system diseases.

Bioreduction and mineralization of Cr(VI) by Sporosarcina saromensis W5 induced carbonate precipitation

The microbial reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) is widely applied, but most studies ignored the stability of reduction products. In this study, the Cr(VI)-reducing bacterium of Sporosarcina saromensis combined with microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) was used to explore the reduction and mineralization mechanisms of Cr(VI). The results indicated that the high concentration of Ca2+ could significantly enhance the reduction and mineralization of Cr(VI). The highest reduction and mineralization efficiencies of 99.5% and 55.9% were achieved at 4 g/L Ca2+. Moreover, the urease activity of S. saromensis in the experimental group was up to 13.28 U/mg NH3-N. Besides, the characteristic results revealed that Cr(VI) and reduced Cr(III) were absorbed on the surface or got into the interspace of CaCO3, which produced a new stable phase (Ca10Cr6O24(CO3)). Overall, the combination of S. saromensis and MICP technology might be a high-efficiency and environmentally friendly strategy for further application in the Cr(VI)-containing groundwater.

Transfer of Cd along the food chain: The susceptibility of Hyphantria cunea larvae to Beauveria bassiana under Cd stress

Heavy metal can affect the bio-control efficiency of entomopathogenic fungi on pests, but this has not been studied in the food chain. Here, the food chain of soil-Fraxinus mandshurica-Hyphantria cunea was constructed to investigate the effect of cadmium (Cd) exposure on the susceptibility of H. cunea larvae to Beauveria bassiana (Bb) and to analyze the corresponding mechanism through larval innate immunity and energy metabolism. Cd through the food chain synergistically enhanced the susceptibility of H. cunea larvae to Bb. Cellular immunity-related parameters decreased when the Cd treatment group was compared with the control group and when the combined treatment group of Cd and Bb was compared with the Bb treatment group. Cd exposure induced hormesis on pathogen recognition and signal transduction genes of humoral immunity, but reduced the expression of effector genes. The expression of the 13 humoral immunity-related genes in the combined treatment group was lower than in the Bb treatment group. Cd exposure decreased the energy storage of H. cunea larvae before Bb infection and aggravated the disorder level of energy metabolism after Bb infection. Taken together, disturbance of innate immunity and energy metabolism improves the susceptibility of H. cunea larvae to Bb in the Cd-polluted food chain.

Isolation of cadmium-resistance and siderophore-producing endophytic bacteria and their potential use for soil cadmium remediation

Endophyte-assisted phytoremediation is an emerging technique for soil heavy metals (HMs) remediation and has become a research focus in the world because of the benefits of endophytes on plant growth and uptake of HMs. In this study, multifunctional endophytic bacteria strains were isolated and screened, and the feasibility of these strains for soil cadmium (Cd) remediation was investigated by soil incubation experiments and pot experiments. All endophytic bacteria were isolated from the roots of woody plants grown on Cd-contaminated soil. Seven endophytic bacteria strains had capacities to tolerate Cd toxicity and produce siderophores, and sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene classified these strains as belonging to the genera Burkholderia, Pseudomonas, Pantoea, and Herbaspirillum. All strains were able to produce hydroxamate siderophores (32.40%-91.49%) and had three or more plant growth promoting properties such as phosphorus solubilization, nitrogen fixation, indole acetic acid and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase production. They were all strongly resistant to Cd2+ toxicity, with the minimum inhibitory concentration in LB medium ranging from 1.5 mM to 9.0 mM. Except for strain Burkholderia contaminans JLS17, other strains showed decreasing removal rates within continuously elevated Cd2+ concentration of 10-100 mg L-1. Compared with the uninoculated treatment, the inoculation of strains B.contaminans JLS17, Pseudomonas lurida JLS32, and Pantoea endophytica JLS50 effectively increased the concentration of acid-soluble Cd and decreased the concentration of reducible, oxidizable, and residual Cd in the soils of different Cd contamination levels. In pot experiments, inoculation of strains JLS17 and YTG72 significantly (p < 0.05) promoted the growth of above-ground parts and root system of slash pine (Pinus elliottii) under Cd stress. This study provides a valuable biological resource for endophyte-assisted phytoremediation and a theoretical basis for the application of endophytic bacteria for remediation of Cd-contaminated soil.

Identification of acid phosphatase (ShACP) from the freshwater crab Sinopotamon henanense and its expression pattern changes in response to cadmium

Acid phosphatase(ACP) is an important immune enzyme in crustacean humoral immunity. At present, the research on ACP mainly focuses on the biochemical properties of the enzyme, while few studies on gene expression. In this study, ShACP was cloned and the effect of cadmium stress on the expression and function of ShACP in the freshwater crab Sinopotamon henanense was studied. Analysis of the ShACP sequence and tissue distribution results showed that the cDNA sequence of ShACP was 1629 bp, including 48 bp 5' untranslated region, 1209 bp open reading frame region, and 372 bp 3' untranslated region, encoding 402 amino acids. ShACP contained multiple phosphorylation sites and mainly played a role in the hemolymph. Under low-concentration cadmium stress, the body improved immunity by enhancing the expression of ShACP, while high-concentration cadmium stress inhibited the expression of ShACP. ShACP can promote the phagocytosis of hemocytes, while cadmium stress reduced the phagocytosis of hemocytes. This study provides a theoretical basis for further research on the immune system of crabs and is of great significance for the study of crustacean immune responses under heavy metal stress.

Isolation of urease-producing bacteria from cocoa farms soils in Santander, Colombia, for cadmium remediation

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal that causes serious health problems and is present in agriculturally important soils in Colombia, such as the ones used for cocoa farming. Recently, the use of ureolytic bacteria by the Microbiologically Induced Carbonate Precipitation (MICP) activity has been proposed as an alternative to mitigate the availability of Cd in contaminated soils. In this study, 12 urease-positive bacteria able to grow in the presence of Cd(II) were isolated and identified. Three were selected based on urease activity, precipitates formation and growth, with two belonging to the genus Serratia (codes 4.1a and 5b) and one to Acinetobacter (code 6a). These isolates exhibited low urease activity levels (3.09, 1.34 and 0.31 μmol mL-1 h-1, respectively), but could raise the pH to values close to 9.0 and to produce carbonate precipitates. It was shown that the presence of Cd affects the growth of the selected isolates. However, urease activity was not negatively influenced. In addition, the three isolates were observed to efficiently remove Cd from solution. The two Serratia isolates presented maximum removals of 99.70% and 99.62%, with initial 0.05 mM Cd(II) in the culture medium (supplemented with urea and Ca(II)) at 30 °C and 144 h of incubation. For the Acinetobacter isolate, the maximum removal was 91.23% at the same conditions. Thus, this study evidences the potential use of these bacteria for bioremediation treatments in samples contaminated with Cd, and it is one of the few reports that shows the high cadmium removal capacity of bacteria from the genus Serratia.

Effect of phosphate on cadmium immobilized by microbial-induced carbonate precipitation: Mobilization or immobilization?

Microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a promising technology to immobilize/remediate heavy metals (HMs) like cadmium (Cd). However, the long-term stability of MICP-immobilized HMs is unclear, especially in farmland where chemical fertilization is necessary. Therefore, we performed MICP treatment on soils contaminated with various Cd compounds (CdCO₃, CdS, and CdCl₂) and added diammonium phosphate (DAP) to explore the impact of phosphate on the MICP-immobilized Cd. The results showed that MICP treatment was practical to immobilize the exchangeable Cd but to mobilize the carbonate and Fe/Mn oxide-bound Cd. After applying DAP, soil pH declined due to ammonium nitrification. At high P/Ca molar ratios (1/2 and 1), partial previously immobilized Cd was released due to the carbonate dissolution. Contrarily, exchangeable Cd transformed to less mobilizable Fe/Mn oxide-bound at low P/Ca molar ratios (1/4 and 1/8). Meanwhile, other treatments were also helpful in avoiding the release of immobilized Cd, such as applying non-ammonium phosphate and adding lime material after soil acidification. Our investigation suggested that the long-term stability of HMs in remediated sites should be carefully evaluated, especially in agricultural areas with phosphate and nitrogen fertilizer input.

Enhanced Cd(II) biomineralization induced by microalgae after cultivating modification in high-phosphorus culture

In this study, high-phosphorus beared microalgae was prepared by cultivating modification in high-phosphorus culture, and used for the enhanced Cd(II) biomineralization in soil. Batch experiment results showed that Chlorella sorokiniana FK was modified successfully in highly phosphate culture. Both intracellular P (Poly-P, 29.7 mg/kg) and surface P (phosphoryl based functional groups, 3.7 mol/kg) were greatly enhanced, and the Cd(II) removal capacity surged to 45.98 mg/g at equilibrium in the Langmuir simulation. The EXAFS analysis indicated that Cd tended to form a more stable bidentate complex (RPO₄)₂Cd when bounding with phosphate groups on the surface of the high-phosphorus microalgae. Moreover, high-phosphorus beared microalgae not only had higher immobilization amount of Cd(II), but also promoted immobilized Cd from adsorbed state to mineralized state. After high-phosphate cultured, increased density of P-related groups provided more adsorption sites, while the decomposition of intracellular Poly-P released phosphate ions into cell surface microenvironment, which combined and promoted the formation of Cd₃(PO₄)₂/Cd(H₂PO₄)₂ on cell surface. Cd-contaminated soil remediation experiments applying high-surface-phosphate beared microalgae further showed that more Cd stabilized as a residue fraction within 49 days. This study proposes that the high-phosphate culture strategy is a good way to improve the immobilization of heavy metals in soil induced by microorganisms.

Taurine Alleviates Cadmium-Induced Hepatotoxicity by Regulating Autophagy Flux

Our previous studies have confirmed that cadmium (Cd) exposure causes hepatotoxicity; it also induces autophagy and blocks the autophagy flux. Therefore, we hypothesized that Cd hepatotoxicity could be alleviated through nutritional intervention. Taurine (Tau) has various biological functions such as acting as an antioxidant, acting as an anti-inflammatory, and stabilizing cell membranes. In order to explore the protective effect and internal mechanism of Tau on Cd-induced hepatotoxicity, normal rat liver cell line BRL3A cells were treated with Cd alone or in combination with Tau to detect cell injury and autophagy-related indexes in this study. We found that Tau can alleviate Cd-induced cell-proliferation decline and morphological changes in the cell. In addition, Tau activates autophagy and alleviates the blockage of Cd-induced autophagy flux. In this process, lysosome acidification and degradation were enhanced, and autophagosomes were further fused with lysosomes. Then, we found that Tau alleviated autophagic flux block by promoting the transfer of membrane fusion proteins STX17 and SNAP29 to autophagosomes and the translocation of VAMP8 to lysosomes, which in turn attenuated the hepatocyte injury induced by Cd exposure. This will further reveal the hepatotoxicity mechanism of Cd and provide the theoretical basis for the prevention and treatment of Cd poisoning.

Effect of liposomal drug based on interferon and extract from Silybum marianum on antioxidative status of bulls against the background of contamination of fodders by cadmium and plumbum

The balance between anti- and prooxidants in animal organisms in general and in each cell in particular is responsible for the regulation of many metabolic processes that provide immunocompetence, growth, development and protection of animals from oxidative stress, related to inflow of cadmium and plumbum. Therefore, the objective of our study was the influence of a liposomal drug based on interferon and milk thistle (Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertn.) on the antioxidative status of the organism of bulls in the conditions of cadmium and plumbum loading. The experiments were performed on six-months-old Black Motley dairy cattle. The fodders in the farm were determined to contain high levels of plumbum and cadmium. The liposomal drug Lipointersyl inhibited the lipid peroxidation processes in the bulls. The drug components promoted the decrease in the level of intermediate and end products of lipid peroxidation, in particular 22% decrease in the level of diene conjugates and 20% decrease in TBA-active products. Intramuscular injection of the liposomal drug to bulls of the experimental group strengthened the antioxidant protection of their organism. On the 30th day of the experiment, blood from experimental group animals was seen to have a 9.8% increase in reduced glutathione. Assay of the enzymatic link of the glutathione system revealed that the activity of glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase in the blood of the animals that had been injected the liposomal drug Lipointensyl had increased by 24.0% and 27.7% respectively by the 30th day of the experiment. The experiments conducted on young cattle demonstrated that intermuscularly injected the Lipointensyl liposomal drug – against the background of cadmium and plumbum loading – promoted the activation of the glutathione system of antioxidant protection as a result of increase in the activity of its enzymatic and non-enzymatic links. The study of catalase and superoxide dismutase activities revealed that on the 30th and 40th days of the experiment, the activity of those enzymes varied within the physiological norms. Therefore, the analyzed Silybum marianum-based liposomal drug has antioxidant properties, it is recommended for young cattle in the conditions of contamination with heavy metals in order to prevent the development of oxidative stress.

Micro-dynamic process of cadmium removal by microbial induced carbonate precipitation

Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a technique used extensively to address heavy metal pollution but its micro-dynamic process remains rarely explored. In this study, A novel Cd-tolerant ureolytic bacterium DL-1 (Pseudochrobactrum sp.) was used to study the micro-dynamic process. With conditions optimized by response surface methodology, the removal efficiency of Cd²⁺ could achieve 99.89%. Three components were separated and characterized in the reaction mixture of Cd²⁺ removal by MICP. The quantitative-dynamic distribution of Cd²⁺ in different components was revealed. Five synergistic effects for Cd²⁺ removal were found, including co-precipitation, adsorption by precipitation, crystal precipitation on the cell surface, intracellular accumulation and extracellular chemisorption. Importantly, during Cd²⁺ removal by MICP, the phenomenon that crystalline nanoparticles adhere to the cell surface, but without any micrometer-sized precipitation encapsulated bacterial cells was observed. This indicated that the previously studied model of bacterial cells as nucleation sites for metal cation precipitation and crystal growth is oversimplified. Our findings provided valuable insights into the mechanism of heavy metals removal by MICP, and a more straightforward method for studying biomineralization-related dynamic process.
