Abstract
Today, in the modern consumer era, we are facing a significant change in terms of preferences and behaviour. This tendency is not only a basic desire, but rather a significant social and cultural movement that exerts a tremendous influence on the food industry and correlated sectors. In this direction, food authorities and experts have thoroughly evaluated the practicality of employing natural preservation methods to enhance the quality and safety of foodstuffs, while preserving their nutritional and sensory attributes. Given this context, the development of meat products enhanced with Cinnamomum zeylanicum essential oil (CZEO) poses promising avenues, such as extended shelf-life due to its antimicrobial, antifungal, and antioxidant properties. CZEO also has many health benefits, rendering it as a promising ingredient in functional meat product formulations. Conversely, challenges such as higher associated costs, sensory interactions, and variability arise. Hence, the aim of this review is to offer a novel critical perspective on CZEO's potential application as a functional ingredient in meat products formulations and to address the inherent associated challenges, based on the last five years of scholarly publications.

Abstract
Introduction The rise in antibiotic resistant pathogens associated with bovine respiratory disease (BRD) poses a serious challenge, particularly to the beef feedlot industry, as they currently depend on antibiotics to prevent BRD to mitigate the financial burden (approx. $1 billion annual loss) inflicted by BRD-associated high mortality and morbidity in feedlot cattle. Thus, there is an impetus need for the development of antimicrobial alternative strategies against BRD. This study aimed to screen and select candidate essential oils (EOs) for the development of an intranasal EO spray that can inhibit BRD pathogens and promote microbiota-mediated respiratory health. Methods The effects of selected EOs (ajowan, cinnamon leaf, citronella, grapefruit, fennel, and thyme) on a bovine nasopharyngeal microbiota culture were evaluated using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The microbiota culture was enriched by incubating nasopharyngeal swabs obtained from finishing beef heifers in brain heart infusion broth with and without EOs (0.025%, v/v). These EOs were then also evaluated for their immunomodulatory effects on bovine turbinate (BT) cells by analyzing the concentrations of 15 cytokines and chemokines in cell culture after 24 h incubation. The crystal violet assay was done to assess the antibiofilm activity of EOs against Escherichia coli UMN026 strain. Finally, 15 EOs were screened for their antiviral activity against the bovine viral diarrhea virus 1 (BVDV-1) using BT cells and a fluorescence-based method. Results Ajowan, fennel, and thyme resulted in a moderate reduction of overall nasopharyngeal microbiota growth with significant alterations of both alpha and beta diversity, and the relative abundance of predominant bacterial families (e.g., increasing Enterobacteriaceae and decreasing Moraxellaceae) compared to the control (p < 0.05). Co-incubation of BT cells with selected EOs resulted in minimal alterations in cytokine and chemokine levels (p > 0.05). Ajowan, thyme, fennel, and cinnamon leaf exhibited antibiofilm activity at concentrations of 0.025 and 0.05%. Reduction of BVDV-1 replication in BT cells was observed with thyme (strong), and ajowan and citronella (moderate) at 0.0125% concentration. Discussion Accordingly, ajowan, thyme, fennel, cinnamon leaf, and citronella EOs were selected for further development as an intranasal EO spray to prevent and control of BRD pathogens in feedlot cattle.

Abstract
Recently, the concept of biodegradable and bioactive packaging and surface coating has become a trend. In this work, the bioactive films of chitosan were elaborated following the casting method. Contrary to the films containing the Cinnamomum zeylanicum Blume, Thymus satureioides Cosson, and Syzygium aromaticum essential oils (EOs) mixtures, the control film was thin, colorless, and showed high moisture content, swelling degree, and elongation at break. Concerning the physicochemical parameters, the incorporation of the EOs mixtures minimized the hydrophobicity of the material (θw < 65°) and modified randomly its surface free energy components (γ-; γ+; γLW). The theoretical prediction of Aspergillus sp. and Rhizopus sp. adherence to the chitosan-based films was relatively correlated to the experimental results (r = -0.601). The latter showed that 6.80 % and 19.02 % of the control film surface was covered by Aspergillus sp. and Rhizopus sp. spores, respectively. In contrast, no fungal adherence was noticed in the case of the film incorporating the triple EOs mixture. These promising results revealed that chitosan film containing C. zeylanicum, T. satureioides, and S. aromaticum EOs mixtures could be utilized as a surface coating or bioactive packaging in the food industry.

Abstract
Nowadays, the exploitation of biopolymers in the industrial sector has become a trend. Chitosan is considered one of the most investigated biopolymers due to its abundance and antibacterial, antifungal, and antibiofilm activities. In this work, chitosan was chemically extracted from shrimp shells. Solutions of HCl 1 M, NaOH 4 M, and NaOH 15 M were used for the demineralization, deproteinization, and deacetylation process, respectively. The utilized methods of characterization (FTIR, 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, and SEC-MALS) revealed that the obtained chitosan has a moderate degree of deacetylation and low molecular weight (DDA = 74% and Mw = 72.14 kDa). The microdilution method and inoculation of solid medium were carried out to assess the antibiofilm action of chitosan against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus hirae, Escherichia coli, Rhizopus sp., and Aspergillus sp. which are known as foodborne microorganisms. Results showed that the produced chitosan at 1 g/L inhibits between 63.44 and 99.75% of the microbial biofilm depending on the tested strains. These promising results confirm the potential deployment of the obtained chitosan in the food industry as a replacement for synthetic antimicrobial agents.

Abstract
Helichrysum italicum (Roth) G. Don., immortelle, is a plant species used in ethnomedicine and the food industry as a spice added to food, beverages, and bakery products. It has been shown to possess various biological activities, such as antioxidant and antibacterial activity, making it useful as a natural preservative. We investigated the phytochemical profile and biological activity of H. italicum essential oils from wild-grown plant material collected from natural habitats in the Republic of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Using high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM), a visual investigation of plant organs (stem, leaf, and flower) was performed, confirming the presence of essential oil reservoirs on the surface of all examined plant organs. Essential oils were isolated by hydrodistillation in the Clevenger apparatus. The chemical composition of the essential oils was determined using the GC-MS analytical technique. Cytotoxic activity tests were performed in vitro on three cell lines: skin (fibroblast), lung, and breast cancer. Using statistical tools, the synergistic and selective effects of H. italicum essential oil on healthy and tumor cells were correlated to chemical composition and cytotoxic activity. The synergistic and antagonistic effects of H. italicum essential oil's individual components were simulated by testing pure compounds and their mixture of cytotoxic activity on fibroblasts and breast cancer cells. The results confirm that essential oil's biological activity is much greater than the sum of the effects of its components. The present data are novel contributions to the body of knowledge on the biological activity of this species used in the food industry.

Abstract
Recently, the scientific community is interested in the synthesis of biodegradable and bioactive packaging to replace oil-based ones. Therefore, the present study aims to elaborate an active and biodegradable material using chitosan (CS-film) combined with pelargonium, tea tree, marjoram, and thyme essential oils (EOs), and then evaluate their different properties and biological activities. The obtained data showed an augmentation in CS-film thickness and opacity following the addition of EOs ranging from 17 ± 3 to 42 ± 2 μm and from 1.53 ± 0.04 to 2.67 ± 0.09, respectively. Furthermore, a significant decrease in the water vapor transmission rate and moisture content parameters was recorded as regards the treated CS-films. On the other hand, the treatment with EOs engenders random modifications in the physicochemical and mechanical characteristics of the material. Concerning the biological activities, the treated CS-films scavenged around 60% of DPPH radical while the control CS-film exhibited a negligible antioxidant activity. Finally, the CS-films containing pelargonium and thyme EOs exhibited the strongest antibiofilm-forming activity against Escherichia coli, Enterococcus hirae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa with values of inhibition greater than 70%. These encouraging results verify the effectiveness of CS-films containing EOs such as pelargonium and thyme EOs as biodegradable and bioactive packaging.

Abstract
In the food sector, the formation of biofilms as a result of microbial adherence on food-grade surfaces causes a major problem resulting in significant economic losses. Thereby, this work aimed to elaborate a biodegradable film using chitosan (CS-film) and reinforce its antiadhesion activity by incorporating pelargonium, clove, thyme, and cinnamon essential oils (EOs). Firstly, the antibacterial activity of these EOs alone and combined against four foodborne bacteria were analyzed by the microdilution method. Synergism was observed in the case of EOs combination. Secondly, the physicochemical characteristics and antiadhesion behavior of the CS-films were assessed by the contact angle method and ESEM, respectively. Results revealed that the EOs mixture treatment impacted considerably the physicochemical characteristics of the CS-film and reduced its qualitative and quantitative hydrophobicity. Moreover, the treated CS-film showed a strong antiadhesion behavior against Enterococcus hirae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus with percentages of non-covered surface equal to 97.65 ± 1.43%, 98.76 ± 0.32%, 99.68 ± 0.28%, and 95.63 ± 1.32% respectively. From all these results, the CS-film treated with the mixture of EOs presents a great potential for application as surface coating and food packaging preventing microbial adhesion and thus, avoiding food contamination and spoilage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Natural products are often favored in the study of crop pests and diseases. Previous studies have shown that citronellal has a strong inhibition effect on Magnaporthe oryzae. The objective of this study was to clarify its mechanism of action against M. oryzae. RESULTS Firstly, the biological activity of citronellal against M. oryzae was determined by direct and indirect methods, and the results show that citronellal had a strong inhibition effect on M. oryzae with EC50 values of 134.00 mg/L and 70.48 μL/L air, respectively. Additionally, a preliminary study on its mechanism of action was studied. After citronellal treatment, electron microscopy revealed that the mycelium became thin and broken; scanning electron microscopy revealed that the mycelium was wrinkled and distorted; and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the mycelium cell wall was invaginated, the mass wall of mycelium was separated, and the organelles were blurred. The mycelium was further stained with CFW, and the nodes were blurred, while the mycelium was almost non-fluorescent after PI staining, and there was no significant difference in the relative conductivity of mycelium. In addition, chitinase was significantly enhanced, and the expression of chitin synthesis-related genes was 17.47-fold upregulated. Finally, we found that the efficacy of citronellal against the rice blast was as high as 82.14% according to indoor efficacy tests. CONCLUSION These results indicate that citronellal can affect the synthesis of chitin in M. oryzae and damage its cell wall, thereby inhibiting the growth of mycelium and effectively protecting rice from rice blasts.
