Unravelling trends, patterns and intellectual structure of research on bankruptcy in SMEs: A bibliometric assessment and visualisation

Despite the burgeoning interest among academics in investigating the factors contributing to the high business failure rate among SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises), the systematic synthesis of the literature on bankruptcy in SMEs is restricted. This article aims to significantly advance the understanding of the causes and repercussions of bankruptcy in SMEs and the preventative actions that may be taken to avoid it. This review assesses 282 articles from 175 outlets employing quantitative and statistics-based bibliometric tools. This bibliometric assessment helped delineate the citation and publication trends and the top contributors to the domain. The underlying thematic clusters of research on bankruptcy in SMEs were also identified, deciphered and elaborated, along with charting the future research vistas through the lens of theory, context, and methods framework. The authors believe this bibliometric variant of systematic literature review makes a significant contribution to bankruptcy and SME research by highlighting the development of the literature and some of the most active research fronts in the domain by offering insights that were not clasped thoroughly or assessed by prior literature assessments.

Exploring global trends and future directions in advertising research: A focus on consumer behavior

This study aims to select the physiological and neurophysiological studies utilized in advertising and to address the fragmented comprehension of consumers' mental responses to advertising held by marketers and advertisers. To fill the gap, the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework was employed to select relevant articles, and bibliometric analysis was conducted to determine global trends and advancements in advertising and neuromarketing. The study selected and analyzed forty-one papers from the Web of Science (WoS) database from 2009-2020. The results indicated that Spain, particularly the Complutense University of Madrid, was the most productive country and institution, respectively, with 11 and 3 articles. The journal Frontiers in Psychology was the most prolific, with eight articles. The article "Neuromarketing: The New Science of Consumer Behavior" had the most citations (152 T.Cs). Additionally, the researchers discovered that the inferior frontal and middle temporal gyri were associated with pleasant and unpleasant emotions, respectively, while the right superior temporal and right middle frontal gyrus was connected to high and low arousal. Furthermore, the right prefrontal cortex (PFC) and left PFC were linked to withdrawal and approach behaviors. In terms of the reward system, the ventral striatum played a critical role, while the orbitofrontal cortex and ventromedial PFC were connected to perception. As far as we know, this is the first paper that focused on the global academic trends and developments of neurophysiological and physiological instruments used in advertising in the new millennium, emphasizing the significance of intrinsic and extrinsic emotional processes, endogenous and exogenous attentional processes, memory, reward, motivational attitude, and perception in advertising campaigns.

COVID-19 and finance scholarship: A systematic and bibliometric analysis

COVID-19 has posed unprecedented challenges to global finances because of its unparalleled global scope, with both concomitant shocks as well as the likely altering of risk assessments and forecasts for the foreseeable future. As the effects of COVID-19 on financial markets and institutions have been widely addressed by various literature, we systematically synthesize this literature. Through a comprehensive search process, we extract and review 818 articles. Appling bibliometric methods, we explore the trends among various research constituents involved in the field. Using multi-dimensional scaling, we identify the intellectual structure of research in the domain and outline four distinct themes. We also identify the evolution and shifts in research within the short span of three years since the inception of COVID-19. Through detailed content analysis, various future research directions are proposed.

Citation trends in ophthalmology articles and keywords in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan since 2013 using temporal bar graphs (TBGs): Bibliometric analysis

BACKGROUND

We selected authors from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan (CHT) to examine citation trends on articles and keywords. The existence of suitable temporal bar graphs (TBGs) for displaying citation trends is unknown. It is necessary to enhance the traditional TBGs to provide readers with more information about the citation trend. The purpose of this study was to propose an advanced TBG that can be applied to understand the most worth-reading articles by ophthalmology authors in the CHT.

METHODS

Using the search engine of the Web of Science core collection, we conducted bibliometric analyses to examine the article citation trends of ophthalmology authors in CHT since 2013. A total of 6695 metadata was collected from articles and review articles. Using radar plots, the Y-index, and the combining the Y-index with the CJAL scores (CJAL) scores, we could determine the dominance of publications by year, region, institute, journal, department, and author. A choropleth map, a dot plot, and a 4-quadrant radar plot were used to visualize the results. A TBG was designed and provided for readers to display citation trends on articles and keywords.

RESULTS

We found that the majority of publications were published in 2017 (2275), Shanghai city (935), Sun Yat-Sen University (China) (689), the international journal Ophthalmology (1399), the Department of Ophthalmology (3035), and the author Peizeng Yang (Chongqing) (65); the highest CAJL scores were also from Guangdong (2767.22), Sun Yat-Sen University (China) (2147.35), and the Ophthalmology Department (7130.96); the author Peizeng Yang (Chongqing) (170.16) had the highest CAJL; and the enhanced TBG features maximum counts and recent growth trends that are not included in traditional TBGs.

CONCLUSION

Using the Y-index and the CJAL score compared with research achievements of ophthalmology authors in CHT, a 4-quadrant radar plot was provided. The enhanced TBGs and the CJAL scores are recommended for future bibliographical studies.

Trend and prediction of citations on the topic of neuromuscular junctions in 100 top-cited articles since 2001 using a temporal bar graph: A bibliometric analysis

BACKGROUND

A neuromuscular junction (NMJ) (or myoneural junction) is a chemical synapse between a motor neuron (MN) and a muscle fiber. Although numerous articles have been published, no such analyses on trend or prediction of citations in NMJ were characterized using the temporal bar graph (TBG). This study is to identify the most dominant entities in the 100 top-cited articles in NMJ (T100MNJ for short) since 2001; to verify the improved TBG that is viable for trend analysis; and to investigate whether medical subject headings (MeSH terms) can be used to predict article citations.

METHODS

We downloaded T100MNJ from the PubMed database by searching the string ("NMJ" [MeSH Major Topic] AND ("2001" [Date - Modification]: "2021" [Date - Modification])) and matching citations to each article. Cluster analysis of citations was performed to select the most cited entities (e.g., authors, research institutes, affiliated countries, journals, and MeSH terms) in T100MNJ using social network analysis. The trend analysis was displayed using TBG with two major features of burst spot and trend development. Next, we examined the MeSH prediction effect on article citations using its correlation coefficients (CC) when the mean citations in MeSH terms were collected in 100 top-cited articles related to NMJ (T100NMJs).

RESULTS

The most dominant entities (i.e., country, journal, MesH term, and article in T100NMJ) in citations were the US (with impact factor [IF] = 142.2 = 10237/72), neuron (with IF = 151.3 = 3630/24), metabolism (with IF = 133.02), and article authored by Wagh et al from Germany in 2006 (with 342 citing articles). The improved TBG was demonstrated to highlight the citation evolution using burst spots, trend development, and line-chart plots. MeSH terms were evident in the prediction power on the number of article citations (CC = 0.40, t = 4.34).

CONCLUSION

Two major breakthroughs were made by developing the improved TBG applied to bibliographical studies and the prediction of article citations using the impact factor of MeSH terms in T100NMJ. These visualizations of improved TBG and scatter plots in trend, and prediction analyses are recommended for future academic pursuits and applications in other disciplines.

Impact of competition on microfinance institutions: bibliometric analysis and systematic literature review

Microfinance institutions are challenged by changes in competition, which impact them in various ways. Competition among microfinance institutions is unique because service to the poor, rather than profit alone, is their primary goal. Scientific research on microfinance institutions has increased dramatically over the last two decades. However, previous research lacked a systematic approach in reviewing the literature on the impact of competition in microfinance institutions. This study bridges this gap by reviewing 67 journal articles regarding competition among microfinance institutions. It outlines existing research topics related to the impact of competition on microfinance institutions and offers recommendations for future research. We referred to the RepOrting Standards for Systematic Evidence Syntheses review protocol to conduct a systematic literature review. We also conducted a bibliometric analysis for thematic observations. The results revealed the following four clusters on the impact of competition: social impact, performance, market structure, and relationships with other financial institutions. In conclusion, competition will positively impact microfinance institutions if they accept its inevitability and strive to adapt. Moreover, this study suggests a direction for subsequent research on policies.

Bibliometric network analysis of thirty years of islamic banking and finance scholarly research

This study utilizes bibliometric analyses to map and visualize the development, conceptual structure, and thematic evolution of the Islamic Banking and Finance (IB&F) scholarly research. It analyses 464 WoS IB&F research publications of 921 authors comprising 58 countries published over three decades from 1990 to 2019. The results reveal that (i) collaboration among countries is limited and institutional collaboration can be described as a “locally concentrated and globally isolated,“ (ii) the IB&F research is a type of “small-world-network” where few authors and journals dominate the networks and play a central role in the diffusion of knowledge and the “homophily impact” is present among the leading authors of the IB&F research, (iii) the networks in IB&F research reflects the “Matthew Effect,“ implying that few authors have a more significant number of networks compared to the rest of authors. The study has also identified the conceptual structure and thematic trends in the IB&F research and provides avenues for future research.

Applications of blockchain in government education sector: a comprehensive review and future research potentials

Purpose

With the time and increase in usage of information technology (IT), blockchain technology is gaining immense attention from researchers, academicians, and practitioners because of its distinctive features such as transference, security and data reliability. The purpose of this study is to endow with a systematic review of literature on blockchain in context to the government education sector in terms of its usage, benefits, obstacles and practical implementation in future areas in education.

Design/methodology/approach

The study adopted a bibliometric visualization tool to classify data in yearly publications, highly cited journals, prominent authors, leading publications in countries and institutions and highly cited papers – the data was extracted from the SCOPUS database by using relevant keywords. Thus, the following research questions were developed: How has blockchain technology been used in the government educational sector? What are the benefits examined in the field of education? What were the problems/obstacles faced using the technology in a government education structure?

Findings

The findings identify and provide a comprehensive review of the technique regarding the present research stream in terms of highest publication, author, journal, subject-wise and relevance of the technology in government education structure. Thus, the future research potential of the technology in the education sector is much more as it is in the initiation stage. A lot of opportunities and benefits need to be extracted at large.

Research limitations/implications

The present findings of the study provide a base work for government education institutions, policy developers and researchers to investigate other areas where the technology can be implemented. Finally, more technology applications will develop strategies for proper data management and cost-effective decisions.

Originality/value

This study explains the relevance of technology in education through bibliometric visualization. The study adopted the review and significance of blockchain technology in the government education sector by identifying its benefits, current scenario, application and future research potential areas.

Wireless Sensor Networks in Agriculture: Insights from Bibliometric Analysis

This study investigates how wireless sensor network (WSN) applications in agriculture are discussed in the current academic literature. On the basis of bibliometric techniques, 2444 publications were extracted from the Scopus database and analyzed to identify the temporal distribution of WSN research, the most productive journals, the most cited authors, the most influential studies, and the most relevant keywords. The computer program VOSviewer was used to generate the keyword co-occurrence network and partition the pertinent literature. Findings show the remarkable growth of WSN research in recent years. The most relevant journals, cited countries, and influential studies were also identified. The main results from the keyword co-occurrence clustering and the detailed analysis illustrate that WSN is a key enabler for precision agriculture. WSN research also focuses on the role of other technologies such as the Internet of Things, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and unmanned aerial vehicles in supporting several agriculture activities, including smart irrigation and soil management. This study illuminates researchers’ and practitioners’ views of what has been researched and identifies possible opportunities for future studies. To the authors’ best knowledge, this bibliometric study represents the first attempt to map global WSN research using a comprehensive sample of documents published over nearly three decades.

Neuroimaging Techniques in Advertising Research: Main Applications, Development, and Brain Regions and Processes

Despite the advancement in neuroimaging tools, studies about using neuroimaging tools to study the impact of advertising on brain regions and processes are scant and remain unclear in academic literature. In this article, we have followed a literature review methodology and a bibliometric analysis to select empirical and review papers that employed neuroimaging tools in advertising campaigns and to understand the global research trends in the neuromarketing domain. We extracted and analyzed sixty-three articles from the Web of Science database to answer our study questions. We found four common neuroimaging techniques employed in advertising research. We also found that the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex play a vital role in decision-making processes. The OFC is linked to positive valence, and the lateral OFC and left dorsal anterior insula related in negative valence. In addition, the thalamus and primary visual area associated with the bottom-up attention system, whereas the top-down attention system connected to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, parietal cortex, and primary visual areas. For memory, the hippocampus is responsible for generating and processing memories. We hope that this study provides valuable insights about the main brain regions and processes of interest for advertising.

A bibliometric analysis of cash holdings literature: current status, development, and agenda for future research

Despite the growing interest in exploring the cash holding aspects among scholars, systematic reviews and comprehensive evaluation in this area has been limited. Also, there is only a fragmented understanding about how the cash holdings concept is formed among researchers and experts. We fill this gap in the literature by identifying and evaluating the research development of cash holdings topic. Using 874 articles from the Scopus database that were published between 1947 and early 2020, bibliometric and content analyses were employed to assess the patterns of global cash holdings research. We find that previous studies have substantially enriched our knowledge of the antecedents and consequences of cash holdings. Yet, there are still several opportunities to make significant contributions in this area. The contribution of this research is to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the development of cash holdings research (using a sizeable archival database). It identifies the current joint development and potential opportunities for future work directions on cash holdings association with payout policy, corporate social responsibility, and corporate governance. Our results are likely to be of interest to academics, practitioners, and educators in related business and finance fields.

Disentangling the corporate entrepreneurship construct: conceptualizing through co-words

This study defines the conceptual structure of corporate entrepreneurship (CE) by looking at the terms scholars have used over the last 26 years of research. With the use of a co-word analysis, five distinctive dimensions of CE and the evolution of related key terms are identified: sustained regeneration, competitive advantage, external entrepreneurship, organizational rejuvenation, and domain redefinition. Over time scholars’ attention has shifted from strategy to entrepreneurship by highlighting the relevance of the terms ‘intrapreneurship’ and ‘entrepreneurial orientation’. Surprisingly, concepts related to strategic entrepreneurship and strategic renewal are less relevant than expected. Besides laying the ground for a shared conceptualization of CE, this study highlights how bibliomeitrics can contribute to decreasing conceptual ambiguity in emergent research fields, such as entrepreneurship. Implications for managers on how to strategically create and develop CE within different organizational settings are also discussed.

Service supply chain: from bibliometric analysis to content analysis, current research trends and future research directions

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to carry out the systematic literature review, bibliometric analysis and content analysis of extant literature of service supply chain (SSC).

Design/methodology/approach

Systematic literature review (SLR) technique was used for identifying the research papers. In the first step after reading titles, abstracts and keywords and, full-length articles wherever required, papers not related to SSC were removed. In second steps papers were read more critically and papers not related to SSC were removed. Finally on 502 papers bibliometric and content analysis was further carried out. Content analysis was based on the clusters formed by bibliographic coupling. Further, content analysis of the recent articles revealed the current research trends and research gaps.

Findings

This paper identified the six existing research diversifications in SSC as (1) logistics SSC, (2) model, framework and conceptual papers, (3) third-party logistics service providers, (4) articles from various perspective, (5) measurement of quality and performance on services and (6) impact of adoption of technology, cooperation and branding on logistics service providers. Further, six future research directions are also provided.

Practical implications

This research provides a clear view of the progression of publication, research diversification, research themes of six identified clusters, sub-themes of clusters and content analysis of each cluster. Content analysis of recent articles reveals the current research trend and future research directions.

Originality/value

This is a first of its kind of study which presents the diversification of research areas within SSC, bibliometric analysis, content analysis and provides actionable future research direction.
