Abstract
OBJECTIVES Although the association between sleep disorders and frailty has been well established, little is known about the cognitive appraisal mechanisms underlying this association. Building on the transactional theory of stress and coping, this study explores the role of self-efficacy and coping style in the association between sleep quality and frailty among community-dwelling older adults. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 585 community-dwelling older adults were investigated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Tilburg Frailty Indicator, General Self-Efficacy Scale, and Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and hierarchical regression were performed. A moderated mediation model was established using the PROCESS macro. RESULTS Poor sleep quality affects frailty directly (B = 0.193, p < .01) and indirectly via self-efficacy (B = 0.063, p < .01). The negative impact of poor sleep on frailty through self-efficacy was moderated by both positive and negative coping style (index = -0.007). The moderating effect was stronger when participants' negative coping tendencies increased. CONCLUSIONS Poor sleep quality indirectly influences frailty by modifying self-efficacy. Effective coping strategies can help attenuate this association. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS Timely sleep assessment and tailored strategies such as psychoeducational programs and targeted coping skills training may be beneficial for preventing frailty in older adults.

Abstract
Many lung transplant recipients fail to derive the expected improvements in functioning, HRQL, or long-term survival. Sleep may represent an important, albeit rarely examined, factor influencing lung transplant outcomes. Within a larger cohort study, 141 lung transplant recipients completed the Medical Outcomes Study (MOS) Sleep Scale along with a broader survey of patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures and frailty assessment. MOS Sleep yields the Sleep Problems Index (SPI); we also derived an insomnia-specific subscale. Potential perioperative predictors of disturbed sleep and time to chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD) and death were derived from medical records. We investigated associations between perioperative predictors on SPI and Insomnia and associations between SPI and Insomnia on PROs and frailty by linear regressions, adjusting for age, sex, and lung function. We evaluated the associations between SPI and Insomnia on time to CLAD and death using Cox models, adjusting for age, sex, and transplant indication. Post-transplant hospital length of stay >30 days was associated with worse sleep by SPI and insomnia (SPI: p=0.01; Insomnia p=0.02). Worse sleep by SPI and insomnia was associated with worse depression, cognitive function, HRQL, physical disability, health utilities, and Fried Frailty Phenotype frailty (all p<0.01). Those in the worst quartile of SPI and insomnia exhibited increased risk of CLAD (HR 2.18; 95%CI: 1.22-3.89 ; p=0.01 for SPI and HR 1.96; 95%CI 1.09-3.53; p=0.03 for insomnia). Worsening in SPI but not insomnia was also associated with mortality (HR: 1.29; 95%CI: 1.05-1.58; p=0.01). Poor sleep after lung transplant may be a novel predictor of patient reported outcomes, frailty, CLAD, and death with potentially important screening and treatment implications.

Abstract
Introduction With the progressive aging of the population, frailty is now a significant challenge in geriatrics research. A growing amount of evidence suggests that sleep disturbance and depression have independent effects on frailty, although the underlying mechanisms are not yet clear. This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of depression in the relationship between sleep disturbance and frailty in older adult patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in the community. Method Purposive sampling was used to collect face-to-face data from 342 community-dwelling T2DM patients in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, between February and May 2023. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scale was used to evaluate sleep quality, the Simple Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) was used to evaluate depressive symptoms, and the FRAIL Scale (FRAIL) was used to evaluate frailty. Linear regression equation and bootstrap self-sampling were used to verify the mediating role of depressive symptoms in sleep disturbance and frailty. Result The study found that sleep disturbance had a direct positive effect with frailty [β = 0.040, 95% CI: (0.013, 0.069)]. Additionally, depression had a direct positive effect on frailty [β = 0.130, 95% CI: (0.087, 0.173)], and depression was found to partially mediate the relationship between sleep disturbance and frailty. Conclusion Poor sleep quality and frailty are common in patients with T2DM. To reduce the frailty of older adult T2DM patients, all levels of society (government, medical institutions, and communities) must pay more attention to mental health. A variety of interventions should be considered to improve sleep quality and depression, which in turn may prevent or control frailty.

Abstract
The population worldwide is getting older as a result of advances in public health, medicine, and technology. Older individuals are living longer with a higher prevalence of subclinical and clinical cardiovascular disease (CVD). In 2010, the American Heart Association introduced a list of key prevention targets, known as "Life's Simple 7" to increase CVD-free survival, longevity, and quality of life. In 2022, sleep health was added to expand the recommendations to "Life's Essential 8" (eat better, be more active, stop smoking, get adequate sleep, manage weight, manage cholesterol, manage blood pressure, and manage diabetes). These prevention targets are intended to apply regardless of chronologic age. During this same time, the understanding of aging biology and goals of care for older adults further enhanced the relevance of prevention across the range of functions. From a biological perspective, aging is a complex cellular process characterized by genomic instability, telomere attrition, loss of proteostasis, inflammation, deregulated nutrient-sensing, mitochondrial dysfunction, cellular senescence, stem cell exhaustion, and altered intercellular communication. These aging hallmarks are triggered by and enhanced by traditional CVD risk factors leading to geriatric syndromes (eg, frailty, sarcopenia, functional limitation, and cognitive impairment) which complicate efforts toward prevention. Therefore, we review Life's Essential 8 through the lens of aging biology, geroscience, and geriatric precepts to guide clinicians taking care of older adults.

Abstract
Although the association between poor sleep quality and frailty has been previously reported, the relationship between sleep health and intrinsic capacity (IC) remains largely unknown. We aimed to examine the association between sleep health and IC among older adults. This was a cross-sectional study, and 1268 eligible participants completed a questionnaire collecting information on demographic, socioeconomic, lifestyle, sleep health, and IC. Sleep health was measured by the RU-SATED V2.0 scale. High, moderate, and low levels of IC were defined using the Integrated Care for Older People Screening Tool for Taiwanese. The ordinal logistic regression model estimated the odds ratio and corresponding 95% confidence interval. Low IC was significantly associated with age of 80 years or above, female, currently unmarried, uneducated, currently not working, financially dependent, and having emotional disorders. A one-point increase in sleep health was significantly associated with a 9% reduction in the odds of poor IC. An increase in daytime alertness was related to the greatest reduction in poor IC (aOR, 0.64; 95% CI, 0.52-0.79). In addition, the subitems sleep regularity (aOR, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.60-0.99), sleep timing (aOR, 0.80; 95% CI, 0.65-0.99), and sleep duration (aOR, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.61-0.96) were associated with a reduced OR of poor IC but with marginal statistical significance. Our findings showed that sleep health across multiple dimensions is related to IC, particularly daytime alertness in older adults. We suggest developing interventions to improve sleep health and prevent IC decline, which is crucial in causing poor health outcomes.

Abstract
Introduction Night sleep duration and total sleep duration are associated with frailty. However, the association between daytime nap duration and the risks of frailty has not been explored thoroughly. Methods This study used data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Participants aged 60 years and older at baseline were included in this study. Individuals with daytime nap duration were categorized into four groups: no napping, short napping (< 30 min), moderate napping (30-89 min), and extended napping (≥90 min). Frailty was assessed using a modified Physical Frailty Phenotype (PFP) scale. Non-frail participants at baseline were followed up for 4 years. The association between nap duration and risks of frailty at baseline and incident frailty was evaluated by logistic regression and discrete-time Cox regression analyses, respectively. Results In total, 5,126 participants were included in this study. For individuals with night sleep duration of ≥9 h, short nappers showed higher odds [odds ratio (OR) = 4.08, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.30-12.78] for frailty compared with non-habitual nappers at baseline, while moderate nappers were less likely to be frail (OR = 0.18, 95% CI: 0.04-0.73). In the follow-up study, short nappers showed higher risks for frailty compared with participants of the no napping group with night sleep duration of < 6 h [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.91, 95% CI: 1.07-3.43] or 6-9 h (HR = 1.97, 95% CI: 1.18-3.30). Compared with short nappers, older adults with extended napping (HR = 0.41, 95% CI: 0.22-0.77) showed lower risks for frailty in those with night sleep duration of 6-9 h. For individuals with night sleep duration of ≥9 h, moderate napping (HR = 0.20, 95% CI: 0.05-0.77) decreased the risks for frailty compared with short napping. Conclusion Among older adults with night sleep duration of < 9 h, short nappers posed higher risks for frailty compared with non-habitual nappers. Extended naps for those with a night sleep duration of 6-9 h or moderate naps for those with night sleep duration of ≥9 h could lower the risk of frailty compared with short naps. Future studies on the timing, purpose, frequency, and quality of daytime napping and objectively measured nap duration are needed to explore the association between daytime napping and risks of frailty.

Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of sleep duration on all-cause mortality among older adults with frailty. Methods: The prospective cohort study included 5705 community participants aged 60 or above in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Health indicators were selected in the NHANES to obtain the frailty index and sleep duration. The risk of all-cause mortality was estimated by a Cox proportional hazard model. Results: During the follow-up, long sleep duration was associated with higher all-cause mortality (adjusted HR = 1.28, 95% CI 1.03-1.59). The hazard of all-cause mortality was the lowest from the beginning of sleep until sleep duration reached 5.8 hours among older adults with frailty. Discussion: Long sleep duration was associated with higher all-cause mortality among older adults with frailty. There was a U-shaped relationship between sleep duration and all-cause mortality.
