Daily, seasonal and monthly variations in ozone levels recorded at the Turia river basin in Valencia (Eastern Spain)

On the transition of major pollutant and O3 production regime during Covid-19 lockdowns

Lockdowns enforced amid the pandemic facilitated the evaluation of the impact of emission reductions on air quality and the production regime of O₃ under NOx reduction. Analysis of space-time variation of various pollutants (PM10, PM2.5, NOx, CO, O₃ and VOC or TNMHC) through the lockdown phases at eight typical stations (Urban/Metro, Rural/high vegetation and coastal) is carried out. It reveals how the major pollutant (PM10 or PM2.5 or O₃, or CO) differs from station to station as lockdowns progress depending on geography, land-use pattern and efficacy of lockdown implementation. Among the stations analyzed, Delhi (Chandnichowk), the most polluted (PM10 = 203 μgm^-3; O₃ = 17.4 ppbv) in pre-lockdown, experienced maximum reduction during the first phase of lockdown in PM2.5 (-47%), NO₂ (-40%), CO (-37%) while O₃ remained almost the same (2% reduction) to pre-lockdown levels. The least polluted Mahabaleshwar (PM10 = 45 μgm^-3; O₃ = 54 ppbv) witnessed relatively less reduction in PM2.5 (-2.9%), NO₂ (-4.7%), CO (-49%) while O₃ increased by 36% to pre-lockdown levels. In rural stations with lots of greenery, O₃ is the major pollutant attributed to biogenic VOC emissions from vegetation besides lower NO levels. In other stations, PM2.5 or PM10 is the primary pollutant. At Chennai, Jabalpur, Mahabaleshwar and Goa, the deciding factor of Air Quality Index (AQI) remained unchanged, with reduced values. Particulate matter, PM10 decided AQI for three stations (dust as control component), and PM2.5 decided the same for two but within acceptable limits for stations. Improvement of AQI through control of dust would prove beneficial for Chennai and Patiala; anthropogenic emission control would work for Chandani chowk, Goa and Patiala; emission control of CO is required for Mahabaleshwar and Thiruvanathapuram. Under low VOC/NOx ratio conditions, O₃ varies with the ratio, NO/NO₂, with a negative (positive) slope indicating VOC-sensitive (NOx-sensitive) regime. Peak O₃ isopleths as a function of NOx and VOC depicting distinct patterns suggest that O₃ variation is entirely non-linear for a given NOx or VOC.

Local and regional air pollution characteristics in Cyprus: A long-term trace gases observations analysis

Observations of key gaseous trace pollutants, namely NO, NO_y, CO, SO₂ and O_3, performed at several curb, residential, industrial, background and free-troposphere sites were analyzed to assess the temporal and spatial variability of pollution in Cyprus. Notably, the analysis utilized one of the longest datasets of 17 years of measurements (2003-2019) in the East Mediterranean and the Middle East (EMME). This region is considered a regional hotspot of ozone and aerosol pollution. A trend analysis revealed that at several stations, a statistically significant decrease in primary pollutant concentration is recorded, most likely due to pollution control strategies. In contrast, at four stations, a statistically significant increase in ozone levels, ranging between 0.36 ppb_v y^-1 and 0.82 ppb_v y^-1_, has been observed, attributed to the above strategies targeting the reduction of nitrogen oxides (NO_x) but not that of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). The NO and NO_y, and CO levels at the Agia Marina regional background station were two orders of magnitude and four times lower, respectively, than the ones of the urban centers. The latter denotes that local emissions are not negligible and control a large fraction of the observed interannual and diurnal variability. Speciation analysis showed that traffic and other local emissions are the sources of urban NO and NO_y. At the same time, 46 % of SO₂ and 40 % of CO, on average, originate from long-range regional transport. Lastly, a one-year analysis of tropospheric NO₂ vertical columns from the TROPOMI satellite instrument revealed a west-east low-to-high gradient over the island, with all major hotspots, including cities and powerplants, being visible from space. With the help of an unsupervised machine learning approach, it was found that these specific hotspots contribute overall around 10 % to the total NO₂ tropospheric columns.

Quantifying changes in ambient NOx, O3 and PM10 concentrations in Austria during the COVID-19 related lockdown in spring 2020

During spring 2020, unprecedented changes in local and regional emissions have occurred around the globe due to governmental restrictions associated with COVID-19. Many European countries including Austria issued partial curfews or stay-at-home order policies, which have impacted ambient air quality through reductions in non-essential transportation and energy consumption of industrial sites and work places. Here, we analyse the effect of these measures on ambient concentrations of nitrogen oxides (NO_x), ozone (O₃) and particulate matter (PM₁₀) during the first nationwide lockdown in Austria (16.03.2020 to 14.04.2020). To ensure a robust analysis, the Austrian domain is divided into four individual subsectors contingent on regional climate. For air quality analysis a novel method is applied for filtering days with comparable weather conditions during the 2020 lockdown and spring 2017 to 2019. In general, our analysis shows decreasing pollutant concentrations, although in magnitude dependent on pollutant and regional subdomain. Largest reductions are found for NO_x reaching up to −68% at traffic sites reflecting the substantial decrease in non-essential transport. Changes in the O₃ concentrations at background sites show a rather weak response to NO_x declines varying between roughly −18 to +8% for both the median and the upper tail of the distribution. Occasional site level increases in O₃ concentrations can be attributed to comparably weak titration during night-time. PM₁₀ concentrations show the smallest response among air pollutants, attributable to manifold precursor sources not affected by the lockdown measures. However, our analysis indicates also a shift of PM₁₀ distributions at traffic sites closer to distributions observed at background sites.

Improvement of downscaled ozone concentrations from the transnational scale to the kilometric scale: Need, interest and new insights

BACKGROUND

Ground-level ozone is a major public health issue worldwide. An accurate assessment of ozone exposure is necessary. Modeling tools have been developed to tackle this issue in large areas. However, these models could present inaccuracies at the local scale.

OBJECTIVES

The objective of this study was i) to assess whether O₃ concentrations estimated by transnational modeling at the kilometric scale (9 km²) could be improved, ii) to propose a potential correction of these downscaled ozone concentrations and iii) to evaluate the efficiency and applicability of such a correction.

METHOD

The present work was carried out in three phases. First, the performance of a transnational modeling platform (PREV'EST) was assessed at 6 geographic points by comparison with data from 6 air quality monitoring stations. Performance indicators were used for this purpose (MBE (mean bias error), MAE (mean absolute error), RMSE (root mean square error), r (Pearson correlation coefficient), and target plots). Second, several corrections were developed using MARS (multivariate adaptive regression splines) and integrating different sets of variables (mean temperature, relative humidity, rainfall amount, wind speed, elevation, and date). Their performance was evaluated. Third, external validation of the corrections was conducted using the data from six additional air quality monitoring stations.

RESULTS

The uncorrected PREV'EST model presented a lack of exactitude and precision. These concentrations did not reproduce the interday variability of the measurements, leading to a lack of temporal contrast in exposure data. For the best performance enhancement, the correction applied improved MBE, MAE, RMSE and r from 14.67, 19.23, 23.18 and 0.67 to 0.00, 8.00, 10.19 and 0.91, respectively. External validation confirmed the efficiency of the corrections at the regional scale.

CONCLUSIONS

We propose a validated and efficient methodology integrating local environmental variables. The methodology is adaptable according to the context, needs and data available.

Changing Air Quality and the Ozone Weekend Effect during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Air pollutants, NO, NO2, and O3, were examined from April to June 2020 and compared to a 10-year (2010–2019) climatology of these pollutants for two monitoring sites in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, coinciding with local lockdown measures during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. NO and NO2 values were lower than any of the preceding 10 years at the two Toronto sites for both weekdays and weekends. Ozone concentrations did not have a corresponding decrease and in fact increased for weekdays, similar to other parts of the world. The well-documented ozone weekend effect was considerably muted during the morning rush hour throughout this pandemic period. A Fisher exact test on hourly averaged data revealed statistically significant record hourly minimums for NO and NO2, but this was not found for ozone, consistent with the aggregate ranking results. These findings are likely the result of considerably reduced vehicular traffic during this time and ozone chemistry in a NOx-saturated (VOC limited) environment. This has important implications for ozone abatement strategies.

Assessment of ozone concentration data from the northern Zagreb area, Croatia, for the period from 2003 to 2016

A measurement station located in an urban area on the southern slope of the Medvednica Mountain (120 m a.s.l.), close to the Croatian capital Zagreb, provided data for an analysis of the photosmog in the city of Zagreb. Data for the period 2003-2016 obtained from this station and analysed in this work can also be compared with the nearby Puntijarka station (980 m a.s.l.) for which a similar analysis has already been carried out. In Puntijarka station analysis, it has been shown that there is most probably no significant change in ozone concentrations during the observed period. In this study the mean value of the annual ozone volume fractions showed a linear trend of 0.23 ppb yr^-1, a growth that is in the worst case scenario among the lowest global prediction, while the seasonal (April-to-September) mean values had a trend of 0.32 ppb yr^-1, which is a certain clearly observable growth. The 95-percentile values had trends of 0.009 ppb yr^-1 (annual data) and -0.072 ppb yr^-1 (seasonal data), respectively. Both of these values show very small changes if any at all. By using FT analysis, with the calculation of uncertainties, we have observed three prominent cycles of 169 ± 4 h (weekly cycle), 24 ± 1 h and 12 ± 1 h (diurnal cycles). Uncertainties were low which strongly indicate that the cycles are present. However, since high concentrations of ozone were observed only sporadically, ozone pollution in the northern part of Zagreb is at the present rather low. A Fourier transformation was used to analyse the data for periodic behaviour, which revealed the existence of diurnal and weekly modulations. Nevertheless, constant monitoring is important and will continue in the future as part of continuous monitoring of the ozone levels in the area.

Investigating the background and local contribution of the oxidants in London and Bangkok

The contribution of NO_x emissions and background O₃ to the sources and partitioning of the oxidants [OX (= O₃ + NO₂)] at the Marylebone Road site in London during the 2000s and 2010s has been investigated to see the impact of the control measures or technology changes inline with the London Mayor's Air Quality Strategy. The abatement of the pollution emissions has an impact on the trends of local and background oxidants, [OX]_L and [OX]_B, decreasing by 1.4% per year and 0.4% per year, respectively from 2000 to 2019. We also extend our study to three roadside sites (Din Daeng, Thonburi and Chokchai) in another megacity, Bangkok, to compare [OX]_L and [OX]_B and their behavioural changes with respect to the Marylebone Road site. [OX]_L and [OX]_B at the Marylebone Road site (0.21[NO_x] and 32 ppbv) are comparable with the roadside sites of Thailand (0.12[NO_x] to 0.26[NO_x] and 29 to 32 ppbv). The seasonal variation of [OX]_B levels displays a spring maximum for London, which is due to the higher northern hemispheric ozone baseline, but a maximum during the dry season is found for Bangkok which is likely due to regional-scale long-range transport from the Asian continent. The diurnal variations of [OX]_L for both London and Bangkok roadside sites confirm the dominance of the oxidants from road transport emissions, which are found to be higher throughout the daytime. WRF-Chem-CRI model simulations of the distribution of [OX] showed that the model performed well for London background sites when predicting [OX] levels compared with the measured [OX] levels suggesting that the model is treating the chemistry of the oxidants correctly. However, there are large discrepancies for the model-measurement [OX] levels at the traffic site because of the difficulties in the modelling of [OX] at large road networks in megacities for the complex sub grid-scale dynamics that are taking place, both in terms of atmospheric processes and time-varying sources, such as traffic volumes. For roadside sites in Bangkok, the trend in changes of [OX] is predicted by the model correctly but overestimated in absolute magnitude. We suggest that this large deviation is likely to be due to discrepancies in the EDGAR emission inventory (emission overestimates) beyond the resolution of the model.

Urban Ground-Level O3 Trends: Lessons from Portuguese Cities, 2010–2018

Big datasets of air-quality pollutants and weather data allow us to review trends of NO2, NO, O3, and global radiation (GR), for Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra, with regard to the historical period of 2010–2018. GR is expected to have a considerable impact on photochemical reactions of the O3 formation mechanism. We aim to characterize daily, monthly, and yearly trends. We explore Weekday (WD) versus weekend (WE), and seasonality of O3 and NO2. We are interested to know these pollutant peak concentration variations over the years and investigate if parallels can be drawn between urban mobility indicators and these pollutants. For this purpose, economic data, European emission standards, and car stock data (fuel, age, and number of vehicles) are cross-analyzed. How are they correlated? Has it impacted NO2 and O3 variations? How do different air-quality monitoring stations (AQMS), traffic and non-traffic, compare? How is Lisbon NOx-O3 correlated? What are its implications for future scenarios? Results show that urban mobility trends and economic events are correlated with NO2 and O3 variability. Weekend effect has a partial relationship with urban mobility trends and economy as it is relatively well correlated for Lisbon but not for Porto and Coimbra. Nonetheless, weekend effect for the period of 2010–2018 is overall trending upwards for all cities. In Lisbon and Coimbra, O3 concentrations also trend upwards during the same 2010–2018 period but for Porto they do not. Regardless, for the period of 2015–2018, after the economic recession, the upwards trends of both weekend effect and overall O3 concentrations are clear for all AQMS. For AQMS peak values comparison, Lisbon traffic AQMS registered an annual averaged 8-hour daily max O3 concentration of 34.4 ppb while Lisbon non-traffic AQMS presented 39.1 ppb. Altogether, annual 8-hour daily maximum values for 2010–2018 traffic AQMS in Lisbon show an inverse relationship with fuel sales, and have concentrations fluctuating between 28–35 ppb, which is slightly higher than the 2001–2010 historical European range of 27–31 ppb. Lastly, for the 8 years data in Lisbon, it has been shown that a negative NOx-O3 correlation exists, and the study location might be VOC–sensitive. This means that as NOx concentrations decrease, O3 concentrations become exponentially higher. Further research into VOCs with better data availability is required to make more concise claims. Regardless, it can be inferred that in a future scenario where mitigation continues to escalate, through O3 emission standards and an aggressive shift of car stock to electric vehicles, achieving unprecedented rises in O3 concentrations could be observed.

Ozone weekend effect in cities: Deep insights for urban air pollution control

Studying weekend-weekday variation in ground-level ozone (O₃) allows one to better understand O₃ formation conditions, with a potential for developing effective strategies for O₃ control. Reducing inappropriately the O₃ precursors emissions can either produce no reduction or increase surface O₃ concentrations. This paper analyzes the weekend-weekday differences of O₃ at 300 rural and 808 urban background stations worldwide from 2005 to 2014, in order to investigate the O₃ weekend effect over time and assess the effectiveness of the precursors emissions control policies for reducing O₃ levels. Data were analyzed with the non-parametric Mann-Kendall test and Theil-Sen estimator. Rural sites typically did not experience a weekend-weekday effect. In all urban stations, the mean O₃ concentration on the weekend was 12% higher than on weekdays. Between 2005 and 2014, the annual mean of daily O₃ concentrations increased at 74% of urban sites worldwide (+ 0.41 ppb year^-1) and decreased in the United Kingdom (- 0.18 ppb year^-1). Over this time period, emissions of O₃ precursors declined significantly. However, a greater decline in nitrogen oxides (NO_x) emissions caused an increase in Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) to NO_x ratios leading to O₃ formation. In France, South Korea and the United Kingdom, most urban stations showed a significant upward trend (+ 1.15% per year) for O₃ weekend effect. Conversely, in Canada, Germany, Japan, Italy and the United States, the O₃ weekend effect showed a significant downward trend (- 0.26% per year). Further or inappropriate control of anthropogenic emissions in Canada, Southern Europe, Japan, South Korea and the United States might result in increased daily O₃ levels in urban areas.

Variability of air pollutants, and PM composition and sources at a regional background site in the Balearic Islands: Review of western Mediterranean phenomenology from a 3-year study

The present study discloses the results of a comprehensive 3-years campaign (2010-2012) of air pollution measurements over an regional island background area (Can Llompart-Balearic Islands, Spain), contextualized with other measurements in the western Mediterranean region. Gaseous pollutants and particulate matter fractions were measured in real time; and PM₁₀ and PM₁ daily samples were obtained regularly from which chemical analyses were performed. Furthermore, during three intensive observation periods, real-time concentrations of particle number, black carbon and ammonia were additionally measured. Our results display particular diurnal and seasonal patterns for certain pollutants such as O₃ and particle number concentration. Our study reveals that concentrations of air pollutants and aerosol chemical composition are rather similar all over the central and western Mediterranean basin. The most abundant chemical components in PM₁₀ were mineral dust, followed by organic matter, sea spray and SO₄^2-; in PM₁ organic matter and SO₄^2- dominated, with significant contribution of mineral dust. Furthermore, a source apportionment Positive Matrix Factorization analysis was conducted. Natural sources exert most of the impact on the coarse-mode fraction, while most of fine-mode aerosols are linked to anthropogenic sources coming from local, regional or long range transport emissions. Prevalence of Atlantic air masses in 2010 had a positive effect in air quality, lowering mineral dust, SO₄^2- and EC concentrations. On the contrary, the high incidence of African dust and regional recirculation situations during the 2012 warm season favoured an overall PM load increase governed by mineral dust, SO₄^2- and trace elements associated to dust aerosols. The continuous increase in tourists in the Balearic Islands, and in general all around the Mediterranean, is clearly changing air quality patterns: while urban air pollution has strongly decreased since 2010, such downward trend is less pronounced at the regional scale, thus related to crescent sources such as maritime and air transport.

Spatiotemporal distribution of ground-level ozone in China at a city level

In recent years, ozone (O3) pollution in China has shown a worsening trend. Due to the vast territory of China, O3 pollution is a widespread and complex problem. It is vital to understand the current spatiotemporal distribution of O3 pollution in China. In this study, we collected hourly data on O3 concentrations in 338 cities from January 1, 2016, to February 28, 2019, to analyze O3 pollution in China from a spatiotemporal perspective. The spatial analysis showed that the O3 concentrations exceeded the limit in seven geographical regions of China to some extent, with more serious pollution in North, East, and Central China. The O3 concentrations in the eastern areas were usually higher than those in the western areas. The temporal analysis showed seasonal variations in O3 concentration, with the highest O3 concentration in the summer and the lowest in the winter. The weekend effect, which occurs in other countries (such as the USA), was found only in some cities in China. We also found that the highest O3 concentration usually occurred in the afternoon and the lowest was in the early morning. The comprehensive analysis in this paper could improve our understanding of the severity of O3 pollution in China.

Use of a dense monitoring network of low-cost instruments to observe local changes in the diurnal ozone cycles as marine air passes over a geographically isolated urban centre

Ozone (O₃) concentrations in urban areas are spatially and temporally variable, influenced by chemical production, depletion through deposition and chemical titration processes and dispersion. To date, analysis of intra-urban variability of O₃ concentrations, and the influence of local controls on production and depletion rates, has been limited due to the low spatial and/or temporal resolution of measurements. We demonstrate that measurements made using a carefully managed multi-sensor network of low-cost gas-sensitive semiconductor instruments are sufficiently precise to resolve subtle but significant variations in ozone concentration across a region. Ozone was measured at 12 sites in the isolated subtropical city of Auckland, New Zealand. Overall O₃ concentrations in the Auckland region were low (annual mean: 19ppb) across all seasons, with a minimum in summer. Higher O₃ concentrations (max. 57ppb) were observed when wind speeds were >5ms^-1 and from the W/SW, and were associated with maritime air masses. Ozone formation in the Auckland region is low, which is attributed to a combination of the low O₃ background concentrations, the negligible contribution of long-range transport and the effect of NOx titration. Intra-urban variability showed that the lowest O₃ concentrations were measured at the residential sites, particularly at night and during rush hours. Ozone depletion from reaction with traffic-generated NO explains the rush-hour minima but did not fully account for the low night-time values. The results suggest that night-time depletion may result from other processes such as the reaction of ozone with nitrite on surfaces such as concrete, pointing towards the need for further studies concerning the rate and mechanism of dry deposition at night in urban areas.

On the origin of the highest ozone episodes in Spain

The 2000-2015 occurrences of the highest ozone (O₃) pollution episodes in Spain were evaluated to investigate their origin. To this end, data series available for urban and regional background (UB and RB), traffic (TR) and industrial (IN) sites were analysed separately and intercompared. Results evidenced that during these 16years mean O₃ levels in the RB sites did not change significantly, and remained constantly high. However, there is a clear increase at the TR and UB sites. Although sensitivity analysis is needed to interpret the cause of this increasing trend, this might be caused probably by the lower O₃ titration intensity due to the preferential abatement of NO vs NO₂, as supported from the neutral trend of O_X (NO₂+O₃) at these sites. We found that the exceedances of the hourly information threshold for O₃ (>180μg/m³) are recorded mostly at UB and IN sites located in seven areas of Spain (specific hotspots or at the tail end of large urban plumes), and that these increased during summer heatwaves (i.e. 2003 and 2015). Although the external contribution of regional-to-subcontinental transported O₃ might be relevant during the highest O₃ episodes in the Western Mediterranean, our results evidenced that in the above specific areas, regional-local O₃ production decisively contributes to the exceedances of the information threshold. Also that the human protection threshold and the AOT40 are more frequently exceeded in the Central, Southern and Mediterranean sides of the Iberian Peninsula. The design of effective episode abatement measures is quite complex in those conditions, due to both the nonlinearity of the chemical processes of O₃ formation and destruction, and to the interplay with the complex meteorological setting, causing frequent recirculation and in situ aging of air masses. However, the combination of meteorological forecasting of the main recirculation processes and sensitivity analysis of NO_X/VOC emission abatement measures might be powerful tools to evaluate the effectiveness of potential O₃ mitigation strategies. Finally we would like to highlight that the current UB, RB, IN and TR classification (somewhat subjective) is not adequate to interpret the origin of O₃ exceedances in complex areas of Southern Europe. Thus, a UB station recording exceedances, and located in a small city in the tail end of an urban plume of a large city, receives not only the contribution from its own UB, but mainly from the specific high O₃ RB caused by the urban plume transport.

Depletion of tropospheric ozone associated with mineral dust outbreaks

From May to September 2012, ozone reductions associated with 15 Saharan dust outbreaks which occurred between May to September 2012 have been evaluated. The campaign was performed at a mountain station located near the eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula. The study has two main goals: firstly, to analyze the decreasing gradient of ozone concentration during the course of the Saharan episodes. These gradients vary from 0.2 to 0.6 ppb h(-1) with an average value of 0.39 ppb h(-1). The negative correlation between ozone and coarse particles occurs almost simultaneously. Moreover, although the concentration of coarse particles remained high throughout the episode, the time series shows the saturation of the ozone loss. The highest ozone depletion has been obtained during the last hours of the day, from 18:00 to 23:00 UTC. Outbreaks registered during this campaign have been more intense in this time slot. The second objective is to establish from which coarse particle concentration a significant ozone depletion can be observed and to quantify this reduction. In this regard, it has been confirmed that when the hourly particle concentration recorded during the Saharan dust outbreaks is above the hourly particle median values (N > N-median), the ozone concentration reduction obtained is statistically significant. An average ozone reduction of 5.5 % during Saharan events has been recorded. In certain cases, this percentage can reach values of higher than 15 %.

Exploring the interaction between O₃ and NOx pollution patterns in the atmosphere of Barcelona, Spain using the MCR-ALS method

This work focuses on understanding the behaviour and patterns of three atmospheric pollutants namely, nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone (O3) along with their mutual interactions in the atmosphere of Barcelona, North Spain. Hourly samples were collected for NO, NO2 and O3 from the same city location for three consecutive years (2010-2012). The study explores the seasonal, annual and weekday-weekend variations in their diurnal profiles along with the possible identification of their source and mutual interactions in the region. Multivariate Curve Resolution-Alternating Least Squares (MCR-ALS) was applied to the individual datasets of these pollutants, as well as to all of them simultaneously (augmented mode) to resolve the profiles related to their source and variation patterns in the atmosphere. The analysis of the individual datasets confirmed the source pattern variations in the concerned pollutant's profiles; and the resolved profiles for augmented datasets suggested for the mutual interaction of the pollutants along with their patterns variations, simultaneously. The study suggests vehicular pollution as the major source of atmospheric nitrogen oxides and presence of weekend ozone effect in the region.

Ozone phytotoxic potential with regard to fragments of the Atlantic Semi-deciduous Forest downwind of Sao Paulo, Brazil

In the Metropolitan Region of Campinas (MRC), Brazil, high levels of primary pollutants contribute to ozone (O3) formation. However, little is known regarding the O3 effects in the tropics. Objectives in this study were to characterize the present levels of O3 pollution and to evaluate the relevance of current concentration-based indices for assessing the phytotoxic potential of O3. Changes in O3 concentrations and precursors at 5 monitoring stations within towns of MRC were analyzed. The daily O3 profile was typical for urban sites and showed little yearly variation. Given the permanently foliated forest canopy, yearly rather than seasonal O3 indices were thus more appropriate for estimating the effective ozone dose. With yearly SUM00, SUM60 and AOT40 of 156, 16 and 14 ppm h and confirmed by evidence of O3 injury in foliage, oxidative stress in the MRC has reached levels high enough to affect trees from the Atlantic Semi-deciduous Forest.

Partitioning, sources and variability of regional and local oxidant (OX = O3 + NO 2) in a coastal rural area in the southwest of Iberian Peninsula

The purpose of this work is to investigate the behaviour and variability of oxidant levels (OX = NO2 + O3), for the first time, in a rural coastal area in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula, affected by several air masses types. Detailed database (built-up over the years 2008 to 2011, and containing around 500,000 data) from the Atmospheric Sounding Station "El Arenosillo" was used. The observed daily cycles of NO x and OX were influenced by air masses coming from industrial and urban area. It can be seen that the concentration of OX is made up of a NO x -independent 'regional' contribution (i.e. the O3 background), and a linearly NO x -dependent 'local' contribution from primary emissions, such as traffic. The local emission is very low in this area. Also, the regional contribution is similar to unpolluted sites and presents seasonal variation, being higher in May. However, our measurements showed that the proportion of OX in the form of NO2 increases with the increase in NO x concentration during the day. The higher proportion of NO2 observed at night must be due to the conversion of NO to NO2 by the NO + O3 reaction. With regards to the source of the local NO x -dependent contribution, it may be attributed to industrial emission, or the termolecular reaction 2NO + O2 = 2NO2, at high-NO x levels and stagnant air during several days. Finally, we estimated the photolysis rate of NO2, J NO2, an important key atmospheric reaction coupled with ozone. We also present surface plots of annual variation of the daily mean NO x and OX levels, which indicate that oxidants come from transport processes instead of local emissions associated as local photochemistry.

The use of experimental data and their uncertainty for assessing ozone photochemistry in the Eastern Iberian Peninsula

Observation-based methods are useful tools to explore the sensitivity of ozone concentrations to precursor controls. With the aim of assessing the ozone precursor sensitivity in two locations: Paterna (suburban) and Villar del Arzobispo (rural) of the Turia river basin in the east of Spain, the photochemical indicator O(3)/NO(y) and the Extent-of-Reaction (EOR) parameter have been calculated from field measurements. In Paterna, the O(3)/NO(y) ratio varied from 0 to 13 with an average value of 5.1 (SD 3.2), whereas the averaged value for the EOR was 0.43 (SD 0.14). In Villar del Arzobispo, the O(3)/NO(y) ratio changed from 5 to 30 with a mean value of 13.6 (SD 4.7) and the EOR gave an averaged value of 0.72 (SD 0.11). The results show two different patterns of ozone production as a function of the location. The suburban area shows a VOC-sensitive regime whereas the rural one shows a transition regime close to NO(x)-sensitive conditions. No seasonal differences in these regimes are observed along the monitoring campaigns. Finally, an analysis of the influence of the measurement quality of NO(y), NO(x) and O(3) on the uncertainty of the O(3)/NO(y) ratio and the EOR was performed showing that the uncertainty of O(3)/NO(y) is not dependent on either its value or the individual values of O(3) and NO(y) but just on the quality of O(3) and NO(y) measurements. The maximum uncertainty is 26% as long as the combined uncertainties of O(3) and NO(y) remain below the 7.5%. The case of the EOR is different and its uncertainty depends on both the value of the EOR parameter and the individual concentration values of NO(y) and NO(x). The uncertainty of the EOR estimation can be very high (>200%) if the combined uncertainties of both NO(y) and NO(x) are high (>7.5%), or especially, if u(NO(y)) and u(NO(x)) differ considerably from each other (>3.5%).
