Bio-Inspired Imprinting Materials for Biomedical Applications

Inspired by the recognition mechanism of biological molecules, molecular imprinting techniques (MITs) are imparted with numerous merits like excellent stability, recognition specificity, adsorption properties, and easy synthesis processes, and thus broaden the avenues for convenient fabrication protocol of bio-inspired molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) with desirable functions to satisfy the extensive demands of biomedical applications. Herein, the recent research progress made with respect to bio-inspired imprinting materials is discussed in this review. First, the underlying mechanism and basic components of a typical molecular imprinting procedure are briefly explored. Then, emphasis is put on the introduction of diverse MITs and novel bio-inspired imprinting materials. Following these two sections, practical applications of MIPs in the field of biomedical science are focused on. Last but not least, perspectives on the remaining challenges and future development of bio-inspired imprinting materials are presented.

Treatment of Water Contaminated with Reactive Black-5 Dye by Carbon Nanotubes

Most of the dyes used today by the textile industry are of synthetic origin. These substances, many of which are highly toxic, are in many cases not adequately filtered during the processing stages, ending up in groundwater and water courses. The aim of this work was to optimize the adsorption process of carbon nanotubes to remove an azo-dye, called Reactive Black-5, from aqueous systems. Particular systems containing carbon nanotubes and dye solutions were analyzed. Furthermore, the reversibility of the process and the presence of possible degradation phenomena by the dye molecules were investigated. For this purpose, the influence of different parameters on the adsorption process, such as the nature of the carbon nanotubes (purified and nonpurified), initial concentration of the dye, stirring speed, and contact times, were studied. The solid and liquid phases after the tests were characterized by chemical-physical techniques such as thermogravimetric analysis (TG, DTA), UV spectrophotometry, BET (Brunauer, Emmett, Teller), and TOC (total organic carbon) analysis. The data obtained showed a high adsorbing capacity of carbon nanotubes in the removal of the Reactive Black-5 dye from aqueous systems. Furthermore, the efficiency of the adsorption process was observed to be influenced by the stirring speed of the samples and the contact time, while purified and nonpurified nanotubes provided substantially the same results.

Long-term stability and reusability of molecularly imprinted polymers

The effect of crosslinker, functional monomer and extraction on the long-term performance and degradation of molecularly imprinted polymers was investigated through adsorption studies, NMR, SEM, TGA and BET.

Molecularly imprinted materials are man-made mimics of biological receptors. Their polymer network has recognition sites complementary to a substrate in terms of size, shape and chemical functionality. They have diverse applications in various chemical, biomedical and engineering fields such as solid phase extraction, catalysis, drug delivery, pharmaceutical purification, (bio)sensors, water treatment, membrane separations and proteomics. The stability and reusability of molecularly imprinted polymers (IPs) have crucial roles in developing applications that are reliable, economic and sustainable. In the present article the effect of crosslinkers, functional monomers and conditions for template extraction on the long-term stability and reusability of IPs was systematically investigated. Adsorption capacity, selectivity, morphology and thermal decomposition of eleven different l-phenylalanine methyl ester imprinted polymers were studied to reveal performance loss over 100 adsorption–regeneration cycles. Furthermore, crosslinker and functional monomer specific reversible and irreversible decomposition of imprinted polymers as a result of adsorbent regeneration were investigated through adsorption studies, electron microscopy, N₂ adsorption and thermogravimetric analysis. A decomposition mechanism was proposed and revealed using NMR spectroscopy. Solutions to avoid or overcome the limitations of the most common crosslinkers, functional monomers and extraction techniques were proposed and experimentally validated.

Synthesis of molecularly imprinted polymers using acrylamide-β-cyclodextrin as a cofunctional monomer for the specific capture of tea saponins from the defatted cake extract of Camellia oleifera

Molecularly imprinted polymers were synthesized using mixed tea saponins as a template and acrylamide-β-cyclodextrin as a cofunctional monomer for the specific binding and purification of tea saponins from the defatted cake extract of Camellia oleifera. The adsorption properties of the prepared polymers were systematically evaluated including adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms, and selective recognition characteristics. It showed that the adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo first-order kinetic model (R² = 0.995) with an equilibrium time of 3 h, adsorption isotherm data fitted well with the Langmuir-Freundlich model (R² = 0.984) with an adsorption capacity of 14.23 mg/g. The relative selectivity coefficient (k´) in the presence of the analogues glycyrrhizic acid and glycyrrhetinic acid were 1.16 and 17.21, respectively. The performance of the molecularly imprinted polymers as solid-phase extraction materials was investigated and the results indicated that using acrylamide-β-cyclodextrin as a cofunctional monomer improved both the adsorption capacity and active sites stability of the imprinted polymers. The solid-phase extraction using the polymers as packing materials was subsequently applied for the separation of tea saponins in raw C. oleifera press extract, and targets were obtained with a purity reaching 89%.

Molecular imprinting: perspectives and applications

This critical review presents a survey of recent developments in technologies and strategies for the preparation of MIPs, followed by the application of MIPs in sample pretreatment, chromatographic separation and chemical sensing.
