Abstract
The anthropogenic impact on the aquatic environment of the Raša River (Croatia) was investigated through the analysis of seven polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), seven polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), three DDT isomers, and 22 major and trace elements using yellow European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) as a biological indicator of contamination. The obtained data indicated generally low contamination status in the surrounding area. Levels of all organic contaminants in muscle significantly increased with lipid content, length, weight and body condition. In both muscle and liver, most metal(loid)s decreased or remained unchanged with increasing size, while at downstream location only several elements (Cd, Cu, Fe, Na, Se, U, V, Zn) accumulated in the liver with fish growth. Spatial analysis revealed higher pressure of Ag, Cd, Cr, Mo, Tl, U, and V at the downstream location, revealing the potentially limited impact of historical coal mining industry on the lower reaches of the Raša River.

Abstract
The assessment of the environmental quality of a sensitive karst aquatic system under the centuries-long anthropogenic influence of the coal mining industry is important for both improving the quality of water resources and protecting aquatic wildlife and human health. In this study, we investigated the anthropogenic impact on the aquatic environment of the upper and middle course of the Raša River through the analysis of a suite of metal(loid)s in three aquatic compartments (water, sediment, fish) using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Concentrations of inorganic constituents in water were low, while the chemical composition of stream sediments mainly reflected the geological background of the area, indicating the origin of metal(loid)s from predominantly natural sources. Although comparison with PEC-Q values indicated that existing sediment quality conditions could pose a threat to benthic organisms with regard to Cr and Ni, the constant vertical profiles of these elements suggested their natural origin from the weathering of flysch. Element levels in the muscle of targeted fish species were in accordance with the values typical for low-contaminated freshwater systems, while levels of Cd, Pb and Hg were mostly below the European regulatory limits for toxic elements in foods, indicating that the low concentrations of most contaminants in muscles of fish from the Raša River do not present a risk to humans or other consumers. The obtained data indicated a generally low contamination status of the western part of the Raša River basin with regard to the analyzed inorganic elements.

Abstract
Although infectious disease outbreaks represent a serious threat for wildlife population viability, the environmental factors that underlie such outbreaks are poorly investigated. The French Guiana breeding population of Magnificent frigatebird Fregata magnificens is subjected to recurrent episodes of chicks’ mortality likely caused by a viral disease. We hypothesized that high mercury (Hg) concentrations may be responsible for the emergence of clinical signs. We therefore investigated whether healthy and sick chicks show different Hg concentrations in blood. Because the essential element selenium (Se) may be highly depleted during Hg poisoning, we further experimentally tested whether an increased intake of dietary Se has an effect on blood levels of Hg, increases circulating Se, and improves the oxidative status of chicks. Finally, we compared the results of this experiment with a previous food supplementation experiment. Our results show similar Hg concentrations between healthy and sick chicks with visible clinical signs of the disease. Se concentrations were significantly depleted in sick chicks. Se concentrations increased while Hg concentrations simultaneously decreased in chicks that naturally recovered from the disease. Both the Se and fish supplementation experiments significantly increased Se concentrations in blood, while Hg levels were only modestly affected. Providing food to chicks appeared to have greater benefits than only supplementing chicks with Se pills as, although food supplementation had an impact on blood Se similar to that of supplementation with Se pills, it also reduced the vulnerability of chicks to the viral disease, possibly by reducing nutritional stress and providing essential nutrients.

Abstract
Silver eel samples, collected from the lagoons of Fogliano and Caprolace (Italy), were investigated for a broad range of contaminants (29 polychlorinated biphenyls, 9 polybrominated diphenyl ethers, 5 dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, 5 chlordanes, hexachlorobenzene, 3 hexachlorocyclohexane, and 5 metals). Concentrations of targeted compounds stand for a general low contamination pattern. Infestation by Anguillicola crassus and virus infections were also examined. No parasite infestation was found, while infected silver eels had a low prevalence for EVEX, and, for the first time in the Mediterranean area, for AngHV-1. Overall, a good quality status of escaping silver eels, for both lagoons, was highlighted by the use of integrative Indexes. A quality assessment of the ecological status of the two lagoons was carried out developing an expert judgment approach, in order to characterize the habitat of eel stocks. A Final Pressure Index was derived, whose values showed an overall limited global anthropogenic impact acting on both lagoons. Results stand for the suitability of an integrated approach to assess lagoon habitats and eel local stocks quality. This could be proposed as a tool to identify sites yielding high quality eel spawners in the Mediterranean region, in order to set up suitable management frameworks, providing elements to appraise and discuss the potential of coastal lagoons in the Mediterranean region towards the recovery of the eel global stock.

Abstract
Pelagic thresher shark (Alopias pelagicus) is a circumglobal species with high ecological and economic importance. Concentrations of mercury, selenium and cadmium in the muscle and liver tissues of A. pelagicus captured from Baja California Sur, Mexico were determined for assessing the potential human hazard. Results revealed that the average concentrations of Hg (0.76 mg kg-1) and Cd (0.18 mg kg-1) in muscle tissues were below the maximum permissible limits for human consumption. Se in the muscles were relatively low (mean: 0.30 mg kg-1 -1) resulting in a molar excess of Hg over Se. Average levels of hepatic Cd were extremely higher than the maximum limit for consumption. Organotropism of Hg was muscle > liver, whereas Se and Cd presented an order of liver > muscle. Biomagnification Factor (BMF) emphasized the trophic transfer of elements. Selenium Health Benefit value was negative (-3.76) posing potential health risks demanding regular monitoring for health risks.

Abstract
This study compares the content of mercury in the muscles, liver, kidneys, gonads and gills of male and female individuals of sichel (Pelecus cultratus). Moreover, the trend of changes of mercury concentration before (March) and during (May) the spawning season was examined. Sichel brooders were caught in the Vistula Lagoon during commercial fishing. The mercury content in tissues was determined by atomic absorption using a Milestone DMA-80. The tests revealed a statistically higher mercury concentration in muscles, liver and gonads in male vs. female fish. Moreover, significantly higher mercury concentration was found in male and female fish caught during the spawning season (May) than in those caught before this season (March). Moreover, testes (0.011 ± 0.007 mg kg-1 w/w) were found to contain 12 times, and ovaries (0.004 ± 0.001 mg kg-1 w/w) - approx. 19 times less mercury than the muscular tissue of those same fish. This may suggest the existence of a protective barrier, defending future offspring against the transfer of toxic mercury from the parent body to gonads and gametes.

Abstract
To support environmental management programs, there is an urgent need to know about the presence and understand the dynamics of major contaminants in seabird communities of key marine ecosystems. In this study, we investigated the concentrations and trophodynamics of trace elements in six seabird species and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in three seabird species breeding on Grand Connétable Island (French Guiana), an area where the increase in human population and mining activities has raised concerns in recent years. Red blood cell Hg concentrations in adults were the highest in Magnificent frigatebirds Fregata magnificens (median: 5.6 μg g-1 dw; range: 3.8-7.8 μg g-1 dw) and lowest in Sooty terns Onychoprion fuscatus (median: 0.9 μg g-1 dw; range: 0.6-1.1 μg g-1 dw). Among POPs, dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p'-DDE) was the most abundant compound in plasma of Cayenne terns Thalasseus sandvicensis (median: 1100 pg g-1 ww; range: 160 ± 5100 pg g-1 ww), while polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were the most abundant compound class in plasma of Magnificent frigatebirds (median: 640 pg g-1 ww; range 330 ± 2700 pg g-1 ww). While low intensity of POP exposure does not appear to pose a health threat to this seabird community, Hg concentration in several adults Laughing gulls Leucophaeus atricilla and Royal terns Thalasseus maximus, and in all Magnificent frigatebirds was similar or higher than that of high contaminated seabird populations. Furthermore, nestling red blood cells also contained Hg concentrations of concern, and further studies should investigate its potential health impact in this seabird community. Differences in adult trophic ecology of the six species explained interspecific variation in exposure to trace element and POPs, while nestling trophic ecology provides indications about the diverse feeding strategies adopted by the six species, with the consequent variation in exposure to contaminants.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate and compare total mercury (Hg), selenium (Se), and Se:Hg molar ratios in fish muscles (phytophages n=3; benthophages n=32; predators n=5) and semiaquatic carnivores, including piscivores (the European otter n=8, the feral American mink n=7) and the omnivorous raccoon (n=37) from a riverine European ecosystem in a Se-deficient area. The Hg concentration in fish reached 0.337μg/g dry weight, dw (0.084μg/g wet weight, ww). We found significant differences among Hg levels in tested vertebrate groups (predators vs benthophages: 0.893 vs 0.281μg/g; piscivores vs omnivores: 6.085 vs 0.566μg/g dw). Fish groups did not differ in Se concentrations, with a mean value of 0.653μg/g dw. Significant differences were revealed between Se levels in piscivorous and omnivorous carnivores (0.360 vs 0.786μg/g dw, respectively). Fish Se:Hg molar ratio values were >2.2. Benthophages had higher the ratio than predators but similar to phytophages. Among carnivores, piscivores had much lower the ratio than raccoon (0.14 vs 3.75) but raccoon and fish medians did not significantly differ. We found almost two times higher Se levels in fish and raccoons compared to piscivores, possibly resulting from lower fish Se digestibility by piscivores in contrast to higher absorption of plant Se by many fish and omnivorous raccoons. Considering that a tissue Se:Hg molar ratio <1 may be connected with a Hg toxicity potential increase, we assume that piscivores in Se-deficient area are in worse situation and more exposed to Hg than fish and omnivores.

Abstract
Background: Methylmercury (MeHg) is a highly toxic compound that traverses the blood–brain barrier with deleterious effects to the central nervous system. Exposure is generally through the ingestion of contaminated fish. Fish are a main source of MeHg. Goals and methods: The aim of this study was to determine the dependence of MeHg concentrations on fish species and age, the percentage of MeHg in total mercury (THg) and risk assessment depending on the size of fish. Assays of THg and MeHg were performed on the muscle tissues of 18 species of fish. Results: The investigations indicated there were differences in the mercury concentrations depending on fish size. THg and MeHg concentrations in the muscles of fish species that have a wide length distribution were strongly, positively correlated with fish length. However, concentrations of MeHg were strongly, positively correlated with those of THg in all the fish species investigated. Variation in the percentage share of MeHg in THg in the muscles of fish of large sizes was also noted within species, but this correlation was not noted in small-sized fish. The dose of MeHg in small-sized fish species was estimated and the risk posed to consumer health was assessed using mean MeHg concentrations determined for different fish species. Conclusions: For species of fish that occur within a wide length distribution, the dose of MeHg should be assessed separately in different length classes. Fish consumption of small-sized species poses no health risk.

Abstract
Mercury and selenium were assessed in the sailfish, Istiophorus platypterus, from the Eastern Pacific. Sixty-seven individuals were sampled, muscle, liver, kidney, gonads and the prey found in the stomach contents were isolated during fishing 2011-2013 tournaments. Hg exhibited the following pattern (μg g(-1) wet weight): liver (0.57 ± 0.07)>muscle (0.56 ± 0.04)>kidney (0.44 ± 0.08)>gonad (0.14 ± 0.01). The maximum concentration of Se was found in kidneys (14.1 ± 1.9 μg g(-1)), and the minimum in muscles (0.67 ± 0.03 μg g(-1)). High Se:Hg ratios were found for muscle (4.1 ± 0.3), kidney (132.4 ± 12.1), liver (54.0 ± 4.4) and gonads (88.2 ± 7.9); Hg:Se molar ratios were several orders of magnitude lower (muscle<0.4 and liver, kidney and gonad<0.03). Sailfish feed mainly on fishes and cephalopods with low Hg levels (<0.13 μg g(-1)), these results indicate biomagnification of Hg and Se. The muscle of I. platypterus should be consumed (according the provisional tolerable weekly intake) by people cautiously so as not to exceed the recommended intake of 215 g per week.

Abstract
We measured selenium (Se) concentrations in yellow perch (Perca flavescens) muscle and their prey collected from four Se-contaminated lakes located near metal smelters in the eastern Canadian cities of Sudbury and Rouyn-Noranda. Yellow perch Se concentrations were related to their weight in two of the four lakes. Measurements of sulfur stable isotopes (δ(34)S) in yellow perch muscle and stomach contents showed that larger fish tended to feed less on zooplankton and more on benthic invertebrates than did smaller fish. Because Se concentrations are lower and δ(34)S signatures are higher in zooplankton than in sediment-feeding invertebrates, there was an inverse relationship between animal Se concentrations and δ(34)S signatures in all of our study lakes. δ(34)S signatures were highly effective in characterizing these food web relationships. Selenium concentrations in yellow perch were 1.6 times those of its prey, which indicates that Se is biomagnified by this fish in our study lakes. Estimated Se concentrations in yellow perch gonads suggest that in two of our study lakes one-third of fish are at risk of reproductive toxicity.
