Coated mesh photocatalytic reactor for air treatment applications: comparative study of support materials

Catalysis by platinum and palladium species confined in the bulk of glass fibre materials

The results of studies on the application of silicate glass fibre materials in catalysis are summarized and analyzed. Despite the very low noble metal content, catalysts based on these materials showed exceptionally high activities and selectivities in some catalytic reactions. This is due to specificity of the glassy state, which makes it possible, first, to confine highly dispersed palladium and platinum species in the bulk of glass fibres and, second, selectively absorb polar molecules, thus excluding the undesirable reactions involving non-polar molecules. The size dependences of the complete oxidation of propane and selective hydrogenation of acetylene, the nature of the structure sensitivity of these reactions and the reaction mechanisms are discussed. Ways for improving glass fibre catalyst performance are proposed and examples of the successful application of Pt/glass fibre catalysts for purification of industrial gases from volatile organic compounds are given.

Anticorrosion Coated Stainless Steel as Durable Support for C-N-TiO2 Photo Catalyst Layer

The development of durable photocatalytic supports resistant in harsh environment has become challenging in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) focusing on water and wastewater remediation. In this study, stainless steel (SS), SS/Ti (N,O) and SS/Cr-N/Cr (N,O) anticorrosion layers on SS meshes were dip-coated with sol gel synthesised C-N-TiO₂ photo catalysts pyrolysed at 350 °C for 105 min, using a heating rate of 50 °C/min under N₂ gas. The supported C-N-TiO₂ films were characterised by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that C-N-TiO₂ was successfully deposited on anticorrosion coated SS supports and had different morphologies. The amorphous C and TiO₂ were predominant in C-N-TiO₂ over anatase and rutile phases on the surface of SS and anticorrosion supports. The C-N-TiO₂ coated films showed enhanced photocatalytic activity for the decolouration of O.II dye under both solar and UV radiations. The fabricated C-N-TiO₂ films showed significant antibacterial activities in the dark as well as in visible light. Herein, we demonstrate that SS/Ti(N,O) and SS/Cr-N/Cr(N,O) anticorrosion coatings are adequate photocatalytic and corrosion resistant supports. The C-N-TiO₂ photo catalytic coatings can be used for water and wastewater decontamination of pollutants and microbes.

Towards visible-light photocatalysis for environmental applications: band-gap engineering versus photons absorption-a review

A range of different studies has been performed in order to design and develop photocatalysts that work efficiently under visible (and near-infrared) irradiation as well as to improve photons absorption with improved reactor design. While there is consensus on the importance of photocatalysis for environmental applications and the necessity to utilized solar irradiation (or visible-light) as driving force for these processes, it is not yet clear how to get there. Discussion on the future steps towards visible-light photocatalysis for environmental application is of great interest to scientific and industrial communities and the present paper reviews and discusses the two main approaches, band-gap engineering for efficient solar-activated catalysts and reactor designs for improved photons absorption. Common misconceptions and drawbacks of each technology are also examined together with insights for future progress.
