Kinetics, isotherm, and thermodynamic studies of methylene blue adsorption from water by Mytella falcata waste

Enhancing Methylene Blue Dye Removal using pyrolyzed Mytella falcata Shells: Characterization, Kinetics, Isotherm, and Regeneration through Photolysis and Peroxidation

The potential of pyrolyzed Mytella falcata shells as an adsorbent for removing methylene blue dye molecules from aqueous solutions was investigated. The study found that the adsorbent produced at 600 °C of pyrolysis temperature, with an adsorbent mass of 0.5 g, particle diameter of 0.297-0.149 mm, and pH 12.0, demonstrated the highest dye molecule removal efficiency of 82.41%. The material's porosity was observed through scanning electron microscopy, which is favorable for adsorption, while Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-Ray diffraction analysis analyses confirmed the presence of calcium carbonate in the crystalline phases. The pseudo-second order model was found to be the best fit for the data, suggesting that the adsorption mechanism involves two steps: external diffusion and diffusion via the solid pores. The Redlich-Peterson isotherm model better represented the equilibrium data, and the methylene blue adsorption was found to be spontaneous, favorable, and endothermic. The hydrogen peroxide with UV oxidation was found to be the most efficient method of regeneration, with a regeneration percentage of 63% achieved using 600 mmol.L-1 of oxidizing agents. The results suggest that pyrolyzed Mytella falcata shells could serve as an ecologically viable adsorbent alternative, reducing the amount of waste produced in the local environment and at the same time removing pollutants from the water. The material's adsorption capacity remained almost constant in the first adsorption-oxidation cycles, indicating its potential for repeated use.

Deep insights into kinetics, optimization and thermodynamic estimates of methylene blue adsorption from aqueous solution onto coffee husk (Coffee arabica) activated carbon

In the current study, an attempt was made to synthesize coffee husk (CH) activated carbon by chemical modification approach (sulphuric acid-activated CH (SACH) activated carbon) and was used as a valuable and economical sorbent for plausible remediation of Methylene blue (MB) dye. Batch mode trials were carried out by carefully varying the batch experimental variables: SACH activated carbon (SACH AC) dosage, pH, initial dye concentration, temperature, and contact time. The optimum equilibrium time for adsorption by SACH activated carbon was obtained as 60 min, and the maximum adsorption took place at 30 °C. Morphological and elemental composition, crystallinity behaviour, functional groups, and thermal stability were examined using SEM with EDX, XRD, FTIR, BET, TGA, and DTA and these tests showed successful production of activated carbon. The outcomes showed that chemical activation enhanced the number of pores and roughness which possibly maximized the adsorptive potential of coffee husk. The Box-Benken design (BBD) was used to optimize the MB dye adsorption studies and 99.48% MB dye removed at SACH AC dosage of 4.83 g/L at 30 °C for 60 min and pH 8.12, and the maximum adsorption was yielded for sulphuric acid-activated coffee husk carbon carbon with 88.1 mg/g maximum MB adsorption capacity. Langmuir- Freundlich model deliberately provided a better fit to the equilibrium data. The SACH AC-MB dye system kinetics showed a high goodness-of-fit with pseudo second order model, compared to other studied models. Change in Gibbs's free energy (ΔGo) of the system indicated spontaneity whereas low entropy value (ΔSo) suggested that the removal of MB dye on the SACH activated carbon was an enthalpy-driven process. The exothermic nature of the sorption cycle was affirmed by the negative enthalpy value (ΔHo). The adsorptive-desorptive studies reveal that SACH AC could be restored with the maximum adsorption efficiency being conserved after the fifth cycles. Overall, the outcomes revealed that sulphuric acid-activated coffee husk activated carbon (SACH AC) can be used as prompt alternative for low-cost sorbent for treating dye-laden synthetic wastewaters.

Conversion of foliar residues of Sansevieria trifasciata into adsorbents: dye adsorption in continuous and discontinuous systems

The study analyzed the potential of leaf powder prepared from the residual leaves of the species Sansevieria trifasciata, as a potential adsorbent for methylene blue (MB) removal. The equilibrium was reached fast for almost all concentrations after 60 min, obtaining the maximum capacity of 139.98 mg g^-1 for 200 mg L^-1. The increase in temperature disfavored the dye adsorption, with the maximum adsorption capacity of 225.8 mg g^-1, observed for 298 K. The thermodynamic parameters confirmed that the adsorption process is spontaneous and exothermic. A direct sloping curve was established for the fixed bed, with breakthrough time (t_b), column stoichiometric capacities (q_eq), and the mass transfer zone lengths (Z_m) were 1430, 1130, and 525 min; 60.48, 187.01, and 322.65 mg g^-1; and 8.81, 11.28, and 10.71 cm, for 100, 200, and 500 mg L^-1, respectively. Furthermore, in a mixture of several dyes, the adsorbent obtained the removal of 51% of the color.

Thermochemical Conversion of Waste Glass and Mollusk Shells into an Absorbent Material for Separation of Direct Blue 15 Azo Dye from Industrial Wastewater

The objective of the presented work was to convert waste glass and mollusk shells into a porous material for separation of the direct blue 15 azo dye from industrial wastewater. The porous glass material of specific pore size and surface area was prepared through a thermochemical reaction by reacting waste glass with mollusk shells, soda, and rock salt. The optimal reaction conditions were determined by adjusting the reaction time, reaction temperature, and relative amount of the reactants. The surface morphology, elemental composition, and functional groups of the material were studied through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray florescence spectroscopy (XRF), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) methods were used to determine the pore size distribution and surface area of the porous material. The material consisted of different types of flakes, oval-shaped particles, and granules. In addition to the functionalized char, the porous material contained Si-O-Si, Si-O-Al, and Si-OH groups. Relatively better yield and pore size distribution were obtained at a reaction temperature of 800 °C and reaction time of 90 min. The fully characterized material was used to separate the blue dye from industrial wastewater. This porous material absorbed about 2.66 mg/g blue dye from wastewater after 20 min of treatment time. The adsorption data fit the Freundlich isotherm better than the Langmuir isotherm. The correlation coefficient of Freundlich isotherm varied from 0.93 to 0.98, which was slightly higher than the correlation coefficient of Langmuir isotherm.

Caffeine removal using Elaeis guineensis activated carbon: adsorption and RSM studies

The palm (Elaeis guineensis), known as dendê, is an important oleaginous Brazilian plant with a high performance of oil production. In this work, a 2³ full experimental design was performed and the response surface method (RSM) was used to indicate the optimum parameter of caffeine adsorption on Elaeis guineensis endocarp activated carbon, since the endocarp is the main by-product from dendê oil production. It was set the adsorbent point of zero charge (pH_pzc), and the material was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The RSM results indicate removal efficiency (%) at the optimal conditions, 0.20 g of adsorbent, and caffeine initial concentration of 20 mg/L, and acidic medium was about 95%. Based on ANOVA and F test (F_calculated > F_standard), the mathematical/statistical model obtained fits well to the experimental data. The overall kinetic studies showed time was achieved after 5 h and caffeine adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order model suggesting chemisorption is a predominant mechanism. Redlich-Peterson and Sips models best represented the experimental data (0.967 < R² < 0.993). Thermodynamic revealed that caffeine adsorption was spontaneous at all temperatures studied, exothermic, and probably with changes in the adsorbate-adsorbent complex during the process. The tests conducted in different water matrixes corroborate the suitability of this adsorbent to be used in caffeine removal even in a complex solution.

Mg-Fe layered double hydroxide with chloride intercalated: synthesis, characterization and application for efficient nitrate removal

Mg-Fe layered double hydroxide intercalated with chloride (Mg-Fe-Cl LDH) was synthetized, characterized, and evaluated as adsorbent to remove nitrate from aqueous solution. The pH, initial nitrate concentration, adsorbent dosage, and particle size were investigated. Kinetic data was best represented by pseudo-second order model indicating that the rate limiting step was chemisorption. Intraparticle diffusion model indicates that adsorption kinetic is limited by external and intraparticle diffusion. Sips model was selected, based on R², ARE, and AIC, to adequately represent the adsorption isotherms, which permits to affirm that the adsorption occurs in heterogeneous surface, obtaining the maximum adsorption capacity of 18.17 mg.g^-1 at 30 ^oC. Thermodynamics parameters indicate that the adsorption was spontaneous, exothermic, and with structural modification. These findings come up with Mg-Fe-Cl LDH as a suitable adsorbent for nitrate and could contribute to its removal from the water and wastewater.

Wodyetia bifurcata biochar for methylene blue removal from aqueous matrix

The endocarp of Wodyetia bifurcata was used to produce biochar by vacuum pyrolysis as an alternative adsorbent for methylene blue (MB) removal. The influence of different pyrolysis temperatures, particle diameters and activation agents in the adsorption process was studied. Kinetics and adsorption equilibrium were also evaluated. Biochar obtained at higher pyrolysis temperatures and activated with H₃PO₄ showed the best adsorptive capacities, achieving 83% of MB removal. The experimental data fitted better with pseudo-second order model. Isotherms performed at 25, 40, 50 and 60 °C showed that the adsorption of MB onto the activated biochar had no concentration dependence in the range studied. Experimental isotherms fitted well with the Freundlich and Sips models and the thermodynamic parameters suggested a physical adsorption mechanism in a heterogeneous surface, spontaneous at all temperatures evaluated. In brief, the activated carbon obtained from Wodyetia bifurcata can be a promising material for MB removal from aqueous solutions.

Syagrus oleracea-activated carbon prepared by vacuum pyrolysis for methylene blue adsorption

This work aims to produce activated carbon from the endocarp of Syagrus oleracea by vacuum pyrolysis and evaluate its potential as an adsorbent. The effects of pyrolysis temperature (400 °C, 500 °C, 600 °C, and 700 °C), particle diameter (0.467 mm, 0.267 mm, and lower than 0.234 mm), and activation agent (H₂SO₄, H₂PO₃, and KOH) on the potential for methylene blue adsorption were investigated. In addition, kinetics and adsorption equilibrium were evaluated. The best condition found was particle diameter < 0.234 mm, final pyrolysis temperature of 700 °C, and using KOH. Adsorption kinetics followed pseudo-second order, with equilibrium reached within 20 min. Isotherms followed the Freundlich model. Values of adsorption capacity were in the order of 30 mg/g. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that adsorption occurred spontaneously with a reduction in the heterogeneity of the solid interface/solution. The results obtained demonstrate the great adsorption capacity of the activated carbon prepared from endocarp of Syagrus oleracea via vacuum pyrolysis for the removal of up to 98% methylene blue from aqueous solutions.

Removal of methylene blue dye from aqueous solution using immobilized Agrobacterium fabrum biomass along with iron oxide nanoparticles as biosorbent

A nano-biosorbent for the removal of methylene blue (MB) was prepared by encapsulating iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) and Agrobacterium fabrum strain SLAJ731, in calcium alginate. The prepared biosorbent was optimized for the maximum adsorption capacity at pH 11, 160 rpm, and 25 °C. Adsorption kinetics was examined using pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intra-particle diffusion (IPD) models. The kinetic data agreed to pseudo-second-order model indicating chemisorption of MB, which was also explained by FTIR analysis. The adsorption rate constant (k₂) decreased and initial adsorption rate (h, mg g^-1 min^-1) increased, with an increase in initial dye concentration. The dye adsorption process included both IPD and surface adsorption, where IPD was found to be a rate-limiting step after 60 min of adsorption. The adsorption capacity was found to be 91 mg g^-1 at 200 mg L^-1 dye concentration. Adsorption data fitted well to Freundlich isotherm; however, it did not fit to Langmuir isotherm, indicating adsorbent surfaces were not completely saturated (monolayer formed) up to the concentration of 200 mg L^-1 of MB. Thermodynamic studies proposed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic in nature. Biosorbent showed no significant decrease in adsorption capacity even after four consecutive cycles. The present study demonstrated dead biomass along with NPs as a potential biosorbent for the treatment of toxic industrial effluents.
