Characterization of CDOM absorption of reservoirs with its linkage of regions and ages across China

New insight into and characterization of DOC, DON and CDOM for urban waters in the lower reaches of the Yellow River, China

Dissolved organic matter (DOM), usually measured as concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM), plays a crucial role in the global carbon and nitrogen cycles in inland waters. The aim of this study is to characterize spatial variations of DOC, DON, and C:N molar ratios and CDOM using absorption spectroscopy and further determine their relationships using pearson correlations (r) for urban waters along trophic gradients in the lower reaches of the Yellow River (YR) of China. A dataset of 122 urban water samples were collected from four typical cities during 2021-2022. Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed to assess the relative distribution of these urban water samples. These urban waters can be grouped into two categories: mesotrophic waters (n = 57) and eutrophic waters (n = 65) based on trophic state index (TSI) threshold value of 50. Results revealed that there were significantly higher DOC, CDOM absorption and SUVA254 along with lower S275-295 and M (t-test, p < 0.01) in eutrophic waters compared with mesotrophic waters. DOC was significantly higher than DON (p < 0.01). DOC was highly related to DON (R2 = 0.649) and COD (R2 = 0.840) suggesting they were derived from a common source. CDOM absorption a(254) was strongly correlated with DOC (R2 = 0.770) and COD (R2 = 0.800). DON can be calculated based on the strong correlations between DOC and DON and then C:N molar ratios can be further obtained for these urban waters. These results implied that CDOM optical absorption a(254) can be viewed as the best indicators of DOC and associated with water quality parameters. These findings can help us to better understand DOC, DON and CDOM of DOM coupled cycling processes for urban waters with similar climatic and hydrologic conditions on basin scale in China.

Fluorescence spectroscopy of CDOM in urbanized waters across gradients of development/industrialization of China

The optical signature of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) has been related to sources and composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in surface waters, but the spatial scope of previous research has been limited to single cities with no studies exploring patterns across gradients of development/industrialization or latitude. Using EEM (excitation emission matrix) techniques, a study was conducted to examine optical properties of CDOM in urban waters along a gradient of urban development (developed and undeveloped cities) and industries (primary, secondary, tertiary). The optical properties of CDOM were measured in 436 water samples collected from urbanized waterbodies spanning 93 cities across China. Results showed marked differences of DOM composition for different level of urban development and for different types of dominant industries. The mean a_CDOM(254) for developed cities (14.31 m^-1) was significantly lower (p < 0.05) than that of undeveloped cities (18.01 m^-1). The intensity of the tryptophan-like component (Q₂) of CDOM was significantly higher for developed cities (0.98 ×10¹⁰ nm) than for undeveloped cities (4.6 ×10⁹ nm), whereas the humic-like component (Q₅) intensity was significantly lower for undeveloped cities (19.80 ×10¹⁰ nm) than for developed cities (16.26 ×10¹⁰ nm). Regression analysis showed that the Q₅ component was mainly (and positively) influenced by secondary industries, while Q₂ was mainly affected by both tertiary and secondary industries. The proportion of allochthonous CDOM increased significantly with latitude from south to north with the minimum increased percentage of 67% for humification index (HIX) within different urban development degrees. These findings indicate that changes in urban development, human activities and industrial structure could alter DOM sources and composition in urbanized waterbodies. These findings are relevant to the management of urban water resources in regions experiencing rapid urban and industrial expansion, and add to our understanding of carbon cycling in urbanized freshwater ecosystems.

A national-scale data set for dissolved carbon and its spatial pattern in lakes and reservoirs across China

A dissolved carbon (DC) data set, including dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), from 224 lakes (513 stations) and 141 large reservoirs (337 stations) across China is presented in this study. In addition to DC, the data set also includes results for electrical conductivity (EC), total phosphorus (TP), chlorophyll-a and transparency. The impact of trophic status and EC gradient on DC concentration in water bodies are discussed. Results from our investigation indicate that DC in saline (EC > 1000 μS cm-1) water bodies (mean ± S.D, 297.13 ± 356.14 mg L-1, n = 186) are much higher than those in fresh water bodies (79.55 ± 199.34 mg L-1, n = 669). Similarly, eutrophic water bodies (n = 552) exhibited higher DC concentrations than mesotrophic (n = 215) and oligotrophic water bodies (n = 85); DC in lakes (158.445 ± 286.52 mg L-1, n = 513) was significantly higher than DC in reservoirs (37.83 ± 37.53 mg L-1, n = 337). Absorption characteristics of CDOM in treated and non-treated urban lakes in Changchun, China

In urban settings, one may find (i) lakes that are non-treated (NT) and impacted by recurrent discharges of pollutants and nutrients, and (ii) lakes that, through restoration measures and active management, are treated (T) from external inputs. The optical properties of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) have been used to assess the anthropogenic impact on lakes ecology, but their application in comparative assessments of urban lakes has not been attempted. For 2 years, we measured nutrients and CDOM properties in water samples collected from NT and T lakes in the city of Changchun, China. Significant differences in CDOM properties were found between the two types of lakes, and these results were supported by redundancy analysis. The NT lakes were eutrophic while the T lakes were mesotrophic, with mean trophic status index (TSI) of 74.2 and 50.3, respectively. The CDOM absorption coefficient at 350 nm, a(350), was 2-fold higher in NT than in T lakes (6.59 vs 3.21 m^-1). In the NT lakes, CDOM components predominantly comprised large molecular weight (MW > 1000-Da) humus-like substances of allochthonous origin, whereas in the T lakes CDOM was dominated by low MW (<1000-Da) substances from autochthonous production. Seasonal fluctuation has a great influence on the CDOM concentration, but a little influence on its molecular composition. The CDOM concentration were higher in summer than in other seasons. Weather conditions (rainfall, temperature) and biophysical processes (biodegradation, photo-bleaching) likely contributed to these variations. We found the water quality of the treated lakes was getting better from 2016 to 2018. In summary, the study results, not only revealed seasonal effects, but most importantly documented the impact of human activities on the characteristics of CDOM in urban lakes. Most specifically, the sharp difference between the lakes in regard to a(350) (2-fold lower in T than in NT lakes) demonstrated the suitability CDOM absorption coefficient as an early indicator of the impact of treatment measures on the hydrochemistry of DOM in urban lakes.

Estimation of Kd(PAR) in inland waters across China in relation to the light absorption of optically active components

The comprehensive analysis of the relationships between the attenuation of photosynthetic active radiation (K_d(PAR)) and light absorption is an imperative requirement to retrieve K_d(PAR) from remote sensing data for aquatic environments. The spatial distributions of the K_d(PAR) and light absorption of optically active components (a_OACs) were routinely estimated in China lakes and reservoirs. Spatial K_d(PAR) was relatively dependent on the inorganic particles (average relative contribution of 57.95%). The a_OACs could explain 70-87% of K_d(PAR) variations. A linear model is used to predict K_d(PAR), as a function of light absorption coefficient of phytoplankton (a_phy), colored dissolved organic matter (a_CDOM), and inorganic particles (a_NAP): K_d(PAR) = 0.41 + 0.57 × a_CDOM + 0.96 × a_NAP + 0.57 × a_phy (R² = 0.87, n = 741, p < 0.001). In the lakes with low TSM concentration and non-eutrophic lakes with high TSM, a_CDOM was the most powerful predicting factor on K_d(PAR). In eutrophic lakes with high TSM, a_NAP had the most significant impact on K_d(PAR). This study allowed K_d(PAR) to be predicted from a_OACs values in the inland waters.

CDOM Absorption Properties of Natural Water Bodies along Extreme Environmental Gradients

We present absorption properties of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) sampled in six different water bodies along extreme altitudinal, latitudinal, and trophic state gradients. Three sites are in Norway: the mesotrophic Lysefjord (LF), Samnangerfjord (SF), and Røst Coastal Water (RCW); two sites are in China: the oligotrophic Lake Namtso (LN) and the eutrophic Bohai Sea (BS); and one site is in Uganda: the eutrophic Lake Victoria (LV). The site locations ranged from equatorial to subarctic regions, and they included water types from oligotrophic to eutrophic and altitudes from 0 m to 4700 m. The mean CDOM absorption coefficients at 440 nm [ a CDOM ( 440 ) ] and 320 nm [ a CDOM ( 320 ) ] varied in the ranges 0.063–0.35 m − 1 and 0.34–2.28 m − 1 , respectively, with highest values in LV, Uganda and the lowest in the high-altitude LN, Tibet. The mean spectral slopes S 280 − 500 and S 350 − 500 were found to vary in the ranges of 0.017–0.032 nm − 1 and 0.013–0.015 nm − 1 , respectively. The highest mean value for S 280 − 500 as well as the lowest mean value for S 350 − 500 were found in LN. Scatter plots of S 280 − 500 versus a CDOM ( 440 ) and a CDOM ( 320 ) values ranges revealed a close connection between RCW, LF, and SF on one side, and BS and LV on the other side. CDOM seems to originate from terrestrial sources in LF, SF, BS, and LV, while RCW is characterized by autochthonous-oceanic CDOM, and LN by autochthonous CDOM. Photobleaching of CDOM is prominent in LN, demonstrated by absorption towards lower wavelengths in the UV spectrum. We conclude that high altitudes, implying high levels of UV radiation and oligotrophic water conditions are most important for making a significant change in CDOM absorption properties.
