Characterization, preparation, and uses of nanomagnetic Fe3O4 impregnated onto fish scale as more efficient adsorbent for Cu2+ ion adsorption

Animal waste as a valuable biosorbent in the removal of heavy metals from aquatic ecosystem-an eco-friendly approach

Toxic pollutants in the form of heavy metals are added through various anthropogenic activities daily into the aquatic ecosystem beyond their permissible limits, and their bioaccumulation capacity makes them hazardous substances for the survival of all organisms. Thus, their removal from aquatic ecosystems is the need of the hour. Treatment of wastewater containing heavy metals through biosorption is gaining popularity and is being explored all around the world due to its various advantages over conventional methods of treatment. Utilization of animal waste as a biomaterial could be the best solution to remove it from the ecosystem. Such treatment methods are a blessing for developing and underdeveloped countries due to their low cost. This paper provides in-depth details about heavy metals, their health implications, mechanisms of toxicity, modes of transportation, and conventional treatment approaches. A comprehensive understanding of the biosorption process, encompassing its world scenario, evolution, mechanisms, factors affecting the process, and advantages, will also be covered. Finally, animal wastes and their applicability in the removal of heavy metal pollutants from wastewater shall also be thoroughly reviewed, followed by their future utility and recommendations.

NiCo bimetallic and the corresponding monometallic organic frameworks loaded CMC aerogels for adsorbing Cu2+: Adsorption behavior and mechanism

In this study, three-dimensional (3D) carboxymethylcellulose sodium (CMC) aerogel was decorated with NiCo bimetallic and the corresponding monometallic organic frameworks to prepare MOFs-CMC composite adsorbents for the removal of Cu²⁺. The obtained MOFs-CMC composite including Ni/Co-MOF-CMC, Ni-MOF-CMC, and Co-MOF-CMC were characterized by SEM, FT-IR, XRD, XPS analysis, and zeta potential. The adsorption behavior of MOFs-CMC composite for Cu²⁺ was explored by batch adsorption test, adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms. The experimental data satisfied the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacities followed the sequence of Ni/Co-MOF-CMC (233.99 mg/g) > Ni-MOF-CMC (216.95 mg/g) > Co-MOF-CMC (214.38 mg/g), indicating that there was a synergistic effect between Ni and Co to promote the adsorption of Cu²⁺. Combining characterization analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculation, it is clarified that the adsorption mechanism of MOFs-CMC for Cu²⁺ includes ion exchange, electrostatic interactions, and complexation.

Low-Cost RSAC and Adsorption Characteristics in the Removal of Copper Ions from Wastewater

Adsorption is a typical method for treating copper-containing wastewater. Fly ash and steel slag both have a good adsorption performance, and activated clay is added in this study, too. In this study, the performance of residue and soil adsorption composite (RSAC) particles for copper ion adsorption was discussed through the substrate ratio and the influence mechanism, to achieve the win–win effect of industrial waste reuse and copper ion wastewater treatment. The results indicated that adsorption time, dosage, initial copper ion concentration, coexisting ions, and temperature showed different effects on the adsorption, respectively. Additionally, the adsorption kinetic study showed the removal of copper ions by adsorption of RSAC particles was in accordance with quasi-primary kinetic model and quasi-secondary kinetic model. The adsorption thermodynamics study shows the adsorption process of ΔG0 < 0, ΔH0 > 0 and ΔS0 > 0, indicating that the process of copper ion adsorption by RSAC particles was spontaneous, heat-absorbing, and entropy-increasing. The research demonstrates that RSAC particles have a certain adsorption capacity for copper ion.

Enhanced Cu(II) adsorption using sodium trimetaphosphate-modified cellulose beads: equilibrium, kinetics, adsorption mechanisms, and reusability

The current study is focused on the simple synthesis of two novel biosorbent beads: BASB/STMP and CNFB/STMP, derived respectively from bleached almond shell (BAS) and cellulose nanofiber from almond shell (CNF) by means of chemical crosslinking with sodium trimetaphosphate (STMP). These biosorbents were thoroughly characterized in terms of structure (FTIR), texture (N₂ adsorption-desorption), thermal behavior (TGA/DTG), morphology (SEM), and surface properties (XPS). The adsorption kinetics of Cu(II) ions onto BASB/STMP and CNFB/STMP materials proved the chemisorption interaction between Cu(II) ions and the STMP functionalized beads. The BASB/STMP equilibrium data were successfully described by the Redlich-Peterson model and the CNFB/STMP data by the Sips model which disclosed maximum adsorption capacities of 141.44 mg g^-1 and 147.90 mg g^-1, respectively. Furthermore, the BASB/STMP bioadsorbent offers easy regeneration and better reusability with high efficiency (> 83%). This study sheds light on the preparation of low-cost adsorbents for wastewater treatment in order to improve the competitiveness and eco-friendliness of agrowaste-based processes.

Effect of low-dose fast neutrons on the protein components of peripheral blood mononuclear cells of whole-body irradiated Wistar rats

The immune system is exposed to extremely low doses of neutrons under different circumstances, such as through exposure to cosmic rays, nuclear accidents, and neutron therapy. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) are the primary immune cells that exhibit selective immune responses. Changes in the functions of the protein components of PBMC can be induced by structural modifications of these proteins themselves. Herein, we have investigated the effect of low-dose fast neutrons on PBMC proteins at 0, 2, 4, and 8 days post-whole body irradiation. 64 Wistar rats were used in this study of which, 32 were exposed to fast neutrons at a total dose of 10 mGy (²⁴¹Am-Be, 0.2 mGy/h), and the other 32 were used as controls. Blood samples were drawn, and PBMCs were isolated from whole blood. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy were used to estimate the changes in the proteins of PBMCs. An alkaline comet assay was performed to assess DNA damage. Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal components analysis (PCA) were utilized to discriminate between irradiated and non-irradiated samples. FTIR and fluorescence spectra of the tested samples revealed alterations in the amides and tryptophan, and therefore protein structure at time intervals of 2 and 4 days post-irradiation. No changes were recorded in samples tested at time intervals of 0 and 8 days post-irradiation. The FTIR band intensities of the PBMC proteins of the irradiated samples decreased slightly and were statistically significant. Curve fitting of the amide I band in the FTIR spectra showed changes in the secondary structure of the proteins. At 2 days post-irradiation, fluorescence spectra of the tested samples revealed decreases in the band tryptophan. The comet assay revealed low levels of DNA damage. In conclusion, low-dose fast neutrons can affect the proteins of PBMC.

Preparation, characterization of fish scales biochar and their applications in the removal of anionic indigo carmine dye from aqueous solutions

The preparation and applications of Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fish scale biochars (FSB) as an adsorbent in the removal of indigo carmine dye (ICD) from aqueous solutions is described. The biochars were prepared through pyrolysis over a temperature range of 200 °C-800 °C and characterized for surface charge, functional groups, thermal stability, particle size and morphology, elemental composition, crystallinity, and surface area by using pH_pzc, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), transmission electron microscopy/scanning electron microscopy (TEM/SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) techniques, respectively. Batch experiments were carried out to determine the variation of adsorption process with initial dye concentration, contact time, initial solution pH, adsorbent load, temperature and adsorbent pyrolysis temperature on the removal of the dye. The percentage removal increased with increase in initial dye concentration and adsorbent dosage. A pH of 2 was the most appropriate for the adsorption experiments. The equilibrium data fitted pseudo-first-order kinetics and Freundlich models, while the thermodynamic parameters confirmed that the adsorption process was endothermic.

Transport and numerical simulation of Cu2+ in saturated porous medium in the presence of magnetic nanoparticles

Fe₃O₄ magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) can control and remove heavy metal pollution from wastewater. This approach has gained broad attention due to its excellent surface properties. However, there have been limited studies for Cu²⁺ retention and transfer regulation in saturated porous media in the presence of MNPs. The objectives of this study were to analyze the migration and deposition mechanism of Cu²⁺ under different conditions through static adsorption and numerical models. The results indicated that the MNPs-quartz sand had better adsorption capacity for Cu²⁺ (59.1 mg/kg) than quartz sand only (26.84 mg/kg), and thus it inhibited the migration of Cu²⁺; the effect improved with increasing MNP content. Furthermore, high ion strength (IS) and flow velocity were beneficial to the migration of Cu²⁺, and a high pH inhibited the migration of Cu²⁺. The numerical simulation results showed that the two-site model (TSM) nicely fitted the migration of Cu²⁺ in quartz sand and MNPs-sand. The migration of Cu²⁺ in both media was affected by chemical nonequilibrium. We also found that the presence of MNPs had little impact on the dispersion of porous media by observing the fitting parameters D (dispersion coefficient) 0.202 for both media. Our results can evaluate the risk of heavy metal migration and retention in saturated porous media in the presence of nanoparticles; this can prevent aquifer pollution.

Self-templated microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesis of two-dimensional holey hydroxyapatite nanosheets for efficient heavy metal removal

Heavy metals have caused serious environmental problems and threat to human health. Ultrathin and holey two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets have recently drawn significant attention as superb adsorbent material to remove heavy metal ions due to their unique physicochemical properties. Herein, we report a self-template-directed ultrafast reaction route to synthesis porous hydroxyapatite (Ca₁₀(PO₄)₆(OH)₂) nanosheets via a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method using poly(allylamine hydrochloride) as an additive. The resulting hydroxyapatite nanosheets showed a high specific surface area (92.9 m² g^-1) and excellent adsorption performance for various heavy metal ions including Pb(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II), with maximum adsorption capacities of 210.5, 31.6, and 24.9 mg g^-1, respectively. The adsorption kinetics fitted well with the pseudo-second-order equation and the equilibrium data showed a high correlation coefficient with the Langmuir model. Based on the experimental results and analysis, we can conclude that the sorption of heavy metal ions with the hydroxyapatite nanosheets mainly attributes to surface complexation and cation exchange. The present synthetic strategy allows the fast and massive production of porous hydroxyapatite ultrathin nanosheets and may also potentially be applicable to the fabrication of other metal phosphates with assembled or hierarchical porous structures towards various applications such as water purification.

Investigation on synthesis of ion-imprinted mesoporous adsorbents by using ultrasound- and microwave-assisted preparation and their dynamic adsorption properties on heavy metals

Removal of the heavy metal ions in aqueous solution is an important technology for waste water treatment. The effects of using ultrasonic and microwave on synthesizing Pb²⁺, Zn²⁺, and Cu²⁺ imprinted mesoporous adsorbents (Pb-IMA-UM, Zn-IMA-UM, and Cu-IMA-UM) and their dynamic adsorption properties were studied. The microstructure and composition of the ion-imprinted mesoporous adsorbents were discussed in detail by TEM, FTIR, N₂ adsorption-desorption, XRD, and EDS. The pore sizes of mesoporous absorbents were improved more uniformly by using ultrasonic agitation than magnetic stirring. The elution efficiency of imprinting ions can be enhanced by microwave elution. Prepared Pb-IMA-UM, Zn-IMA-UM, and Cu-IMA-UM were used for dynamic adsorption study of heavy metals. The detected optimal feed rate was 20.0 mL/min and the influent concentration was 60 mg/L; the equilibrium adsorption capacities of Pb-IMA-UM, Cu-IMA-UM, and Zn-IMA-UM could reach 198 mg/g, 51.5 mg/g, and 57.3 mg/g, respectively. The dynamic regeneration performance of the adsorbent was also investigated with the Cu-IMA-UM sample. The adsorption rate remained above 89% after five dynamic regeneration experiments. At last, the actual wastewater from an electroplating industry was used as the research object. Three groups of dynamic adsorption coefficient contours of Pb-IMA-UM, Zn-IMA-UM, and Cu-IMA-UM were obtained when influents flowed into three adsorption columns separately. The experimental results showed that an ion-imprinted adsorbent had a much better adsorption capacity of imprinted ions under the various metals mixed conditions.
