Uptake effects of toxic heavy metals from growth soils into jujube and persimmon of China

Combination of enrichment factor and positive matrix factorization in the estimation of potentially toxic element source distribution in agricultural soil

The study intended to assess the level of pollution of potential toxic elements (PTEs) at different soil depths and to evaluate the source contribution in agricultural soil. One hundred and two soil samples were collected for both topsoil (51), and the subsoil (51) and the content of PTEs (Cr, Cu, Cd, Mn, Ni, Pb, As and Zn) were determined using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The concentrations of Zn and Cd in both soil horizons indicated that the current study levels were higher than the upper continental crust (UCC), world average value (WAV), and European average values (EAV). Nonetheless, the concentration values of PTEs such as Mn and Cu for EAV, As, Cu, Mn, and Pb for UCC, and Pb for WAV were lower than the average values of the corresponding PTEs in this study. The single pollution index, enrichment factor, and ecological risk revealed that the pollution level ranged from low to high. The pollution load index, Nemerow pollution index, and risk index all revealed that pollution levels ranged from low to high. The spatial distribution confirmed that pollution levels varied between the horizons; that is, the subsoil was considered slightly more enriched than the topsoil. Principal component analysis identified the PTE source as geogenic (i.e. for Mn, Cu, Ni, Cr) and anthropogenic (i.e. for Pb, Zn, Cd, and As). PTEs were attributed to various sources using enrichment factor-positive matrix factorization (EF-PMF) and positive matrix factorization (PMF), including geogenic (e.g. rock weathering), fertilizer application, steel industry, industrial sewage irrigation, agrochemicals, and metal works. Both receptor models allotted consistent sources for the PTEs. Multiple linear regression analysis was applied to the receptor models (EF-PMF and PMF), and their efficiency was tested and assessed using root-mean-square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and R² accuracy indicators. The validation and accuracy assessment of the receptor models revealed that the EF-PMF receptor model output significantly reduces errors compared with the parent model PMF. Based on the marginal error levels in RMSE and MAE, 7 of the 8 PTEs (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Mn, Pb, and Zn) analysed performed better under the EF-PMF receptor model. The EF-PMF receptor model optimizes the efficiency level in source apportionment, reducing errors in determining the proportion contribution of PTEs in each factor. The purpose of building a model is to maximize efficiency while minimizing inaccuracy. The marginal error limitation encountered in the parent model PMF was circumvented by EF-PMF. As a result, EF-PMF is feasible and useful for apparently polluted environments, whether farmland, urban land, or peri-urban land.

Selection of rice and maize varieties with low cadmium accumulation and derivation of soil environmental thresholds in karst

Cadmium (Cd) is considered the primary dietary toxic element. Previous studies have demonstrated significant differences in heavy metal accumulation among crop species. However, this information in karst areas with low heavy metal activity is missing. In this study, the uptake and accumulation characteristics of cadmium in soil-crop samples of group 504 in the core karst region of East Asia were analyzed. Cadmium low-accumulating maize and rice were screened using cluster and Pareto analytic methods. In addition, a new method, the species-sensitive distribution model (SSD), was proposed, which could be used to estimate the environmental threshold for cadmium in regional cropland. The results showed that both maize and rice soils in the research area were contaminated with varying degrees of cadmium. The total concentrations of cadmium ω(T-Cd) in maize and rice fields are 0.18-1.32 and 0.20-4.42 mg kg^-1, respectively. The ω(T-Cd) of heavy metals in maize kernels and rice grains is 0.002-0.429 and 0.003-0.393 mg kg^-1, respectively. The bioaccumulation factor (BCF) of cadmium in maize ranged from 0.0079 to 0.9701, with a coefficient of variation of 1.71; the BCF of cadmium in rice ranged from 0.0074 to 0.1345, with a coefficient of variation of 0.99. According to cluster and Pareto analyses, the maize crop varieties with low cadmium accumulation suitable for local cultivation were screened as JHY809, JDY808, AD778, SN3H and SY13, and the rice varieties were DMY6188, GY725, NY6368, SY451 and DX4103. In addition, the environmental cadmium threshold ranges of 0.30-10.05 mg kg^-1 and 0.89-24.39 mg kg^-1 for maize and rice soils, respectively, were deduced in this study. This threshold will ensure that 5-95% of maize and rice will not be contaminated with cadmium in the soil.

Assessment of Heavy Metals Accumulation in Soil and Native Plants in an Industrial Environment, Saudi Arabia

Industrial activities are associated with various heavy metals (HMs) being emitted into the environment, which may pose a threat to humans and animals. The rapid increase in an industrial activity in major cities in Saudi Arabia (SA) has raised concerns regarding the accumulation of HMs in the environment. The aim of this study is to assess the accumulation of HMs in soil and native plants in an industrial environment. We collected 36 surface soil samples and 12 plant species from 12 sites in an industrial city in central SA. The results showed that the HMs content in the soil followed a descending order of (Fe > Ni > Zn > Pb > Cu> Cr > Cd). The enrichment factor (EF) of HMs in the soil ranged from 0.20 to 7336. Up to 100%, 16.6%, and 6.2% of soil samples were extremely highly enriched with Cd, Ni, and Pb, respectively. Plant species Cyperus laevigatus accumulate Cd, Pb, and Ni. Citrullus colocynthis accumulate Cd and Pb in significantly (p < 0.001) higher amounts than other studied species. The Pollution Load Index (PLI) values for the 12 sites ranged from 0.52–1.33 with S5 and S2 PLI >1.0 indicating progressive deterioration of these sites. The Bioaccumulation Factor (BF) ranged from 0.04–2.76 and revealed that some plant species may be candidates for phytoextraction potential. The most promising plant species for phytoextraction and remediation were annuals or perennials such as Malva parviflora, Sisymbrium irio and Citrullus colocynthis, especially for Cr and Cu. This study suggests that these native plant species may be useful for phytoremediation in the area.

Phytoremediation of Soils Contaminated with Heavy Metals from Gold Mining Activities Using Clidemia sericea D. Don

Soils contaminated by potentially toxic elements (PTEs) as a result of anthropogenic activities such as mining are a problem due to the adverse effects on human and environmental health, making it necessary to seek sustainable strategies to remediate contaminated areas. The objective of this study was to evaluate the species Clidemia sericea D. Don for the phytoremediation of soils contaminated with PTEs (Hg, Pb, and Cd) from gold mining activities. The study was conducted for three months, with soils from a gold mining area in northern Colombia, and seeds of C. sericea, under a completely randomized experimental design with one factor (concentration of PTEs in soil) and four levels (control (T0), low (T1), medium (T2), and high (T3)), each treatment in triplicate, for a total of twelve experimental units. Phytotoxic effects on plants, bioconcentration (BCF), and translocation (TF) factors were determined. The results obtained for the tissues differed in order of metal accumulation, with the root showing the highest concentration of metals. The highest values of bioconcentration (BCF > 1) were presented for Hg at T3 and Cd in the four treatments; and of translocation (TF > 1) for Hg and Pb at T0 and T1; however, for Pb, the TF indicates that it is transferable, but it is not considered for phytoextraction. Thus, C. sericea demonstrated its potential as a phytostabilizer of Hg and Cd in mining soils, strengthening as a wild species with results of resistance to the stress of the PTEs evaluated, presenting similar behavior and little phytotoxic affectation on the growth and development of each of the plants in the different treatments.

Prediction models based on soil properties for evaluating the heavy metal uptake into Hordeum vulgare L. grown in agricultural soils amended with different rates of sewage sludge

The current study aims at forming new prediction models to be employed in the approximating the possible uptake of a range of 10 heavy metals (HMs) (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb and Zn) by Hordeum vulgare tissues including roots, shoots and grains following its growth in soil amended with sewage sludge (SS) using conditions employed in greenhouses. The present study determined an insignificant difference between the actual and predicted quantities of the HMs in the three tissues using t values. The majority of the predicted quantities of the HMs were acceptable with the exception of Cd in the shoots, Cu in grains and Pb in roots. Consequently, it is possible to use these models in assessing the cultivation of barley plants in soil amended with SS in a safe way, while simultaneously monitoring any potential risks to the health of humans.

Evaluation of uptake of eight metals by Sorghum bicolor grown in arable soil combined with sewage sludge based on prediction models

Prediction models were developed to estimate the extent to which aluminium, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel, lead, and zinc were absorbed in the grains, leaves, stems, and roots of Sorghum bicolor cultivated in soil with various amendment rate of sewage sludge (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 g/kg) under greenhouse conditions. It was found that, aside from lead, all the examined metals occurred in significantly higher content in the roots compared to aerial tissues. Furthermore, the r-values were significantly negative between the bioconcentration factors of all metals, apart from aluminium and lead, and soil pH, whereas they were significantly positive between the bioconcentration factors, apart from lead, and soil organic matter content (OM). The r-values were typically significantly positive between the levels of all eight metals in the investigated tissues and in the soil. Moreover, the content of all the eight metals in the tissues exhibited a significant negative r-value with soil pH but a significant positive r-value with soil OM. The eight metal contents in the tissues given by the prediction models were quite similar to the real values, suggesting that the created models performed well, as shown by t-tests. It was thus concluded that prediction models were a viable option for evaluating how safe it was to grow S. bicolor in soils with sewage sludge content and at the same time for keeping track of possible human health hazards.

Bioaccumulation and risk assessment of heavy metals in soil-crop systems in Liujiang karst area, Southwestern China

Evaluating the bioaccumulation and health risk of heavy metals in soil-crop systems is essential in Liujiang karst regions. In the current study, the single and comprehensive uptake effects of heavy metals (i.e., Cu, Cr, Cd, As, and Zn) between rice and sugarcane and their rhizosphere soils were investigated. The estimated daily ingestion (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ), and hazard index (HI) were estimated for health risk assessments. The results showed that the mean contents of Cu, Cr, Cd, As, and Zn in rice soils were 25.8, 168, 1.91, 20.0, and 160 mg/kg, respectively, and those in sugarcane soils were 28.8, 186, 0.44, 31.0, and 108 mg/kg. Rice soils were mainly contaminated by Cd, and Cd and Cr were the main pollutants in sugarcane soils. The average concentrations of Cu, Cr, Cd, As, and Zn in rice grains were 1.79, 0.15, 0.16, 0.11, and 12.7 mg/kg, respectively, and in sugarcanes were 0.10, 0.036, 0.022, 0.006, and 0.38 mg/kg. Both crops tended to take up Cd more effectively, and rice grains exhibited higher accumulation capacities of heavy metals in edible part than sugarcanes. Prediction models of Cd and comprehensive accumulation factors were established for rice and sugarcane, and different soil factors affect metal accumulation in crops cultivated in different types. Due to the exposure to As and Cd through rice consumption, non-carcinogenic risks are likely to occur in Liujiang residents.

Geochemical Characteristics of Heavy Metals in Soil and Blueberries of the Core Majiang Blueberry Production Area

By using field survey, sampling, and indoor analysis, we analyzed the geochemical characteristics of heavy metals in the blueberries and soil of the core blueberry production area of Majiang in Guizhou, China. Analyses were based on national standards for soil pollution risk control on agricultural land (GB15618-2018) and pollution index limits in food (GB2762-2017/2012). The results demonstrated that heavy metal content in the soil profile of this area exceeds standards, but standards were exceeded mainly in the lower layer of the profile, and blueberry growth was not substantially affected. Except for in Lanmenggu, heavy metals in the cultivation soil layer of Majiang Blueberry Farms did not considerably exceed standards. The content of heavy metals in blueberry did not exceed the standard, so it was a safe fruit. These results can provide a reference for the safe cultivation of Majiang blueberries.

Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Soils before Rice Sowing and at Harvesting in Southern Jiangsu Province, China

Rice, one of the most important staple crops in China, is easily contaminated by heavy metal pollution from industrial development. In this work, we systematically investigated the heavy metal (Cr, Cd, Pb, Zn, and Cu) and metalloid (Hg and As) concentrations in paddy soils and different rice tissues in southern Jiangsu Province, China. The potential ecological hazard index method and in vitro simulation test were used to evaluate the influence of heavy metals on local resident health. The results showed that, before rice sowing and at the harvesting period, the order of Eri values was EriCd>EriHg>EriAs>EriPb>EriCu>EriCr>EriZn. The low-risk index values (91.63 and 30.29) for the heavy metals indicated the low risk at the two stages in the study area based on the potential ecological hazard index. As determined with Tessier’s five-stage sequential extraction procedure, the proportions of the chemical speciation of the heavy metals were as follows: residual > organic matter-bound > iron-manganese oxide-bound > carbonate-bound > exchangeable. The order of the values of the accumulation and transfer factors was Cd (3.16) > Cu (0.42) > Zn (0.28) > Pb (0.25) > As (0.07) > Cr (0.04) > Cr (0.03) and root > stem > leaves, respectively. In vitro simulation tests showed that, in both adults and children, the daily amount of Pb and Cd intake through the soil-oral cavity route in the study area did not exceed the daily tolerance for Pb and Cd proposed by the WHO. In summary, although there is no obvious danger to local adults and children, it is necessary to be aware of the possibility of rice contamination from Cd in the soil.

Risk assessment and prediction for toxic heavy metals in chestnut and growth soil from China

BACKGROUND

Toxic heavy metals (THMs) cause severe environmental hazards and threaten human health through various consumption of food stuff. However, little is known of THMs in chestnuts. In this study, the risk assessment and prediction of THMs [lead (Pb), arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg)] in chestnuts and growth soils from China were investigated.

RESULTS

The main detected THMs in chestnuts and growth soils were As and Cd. The total pollution levels of the five THMs (Nemerow pollution indexes, NPIs) were 0.062 and 1.06, respectively. The dietary risks for children were higher than those of adults, especially short-term non-carcinogenic risk. The main combined risks from the relationships between THMs were Pb-Cr (r = 0.85, P < 0.01) in chestnuts and Pb-As (r = 0.59, P < 0.01) in growth soils. The risk source was found to be the uptake effect of THMs from soil to chestnut, with the highest bioaccumulation factors (BCFs) of Cd (0.254). Several comprehensive risk models were established with the highest coefficient of determination (R² ) of 0.79. In addition, the main contribution rates of different soil parameters to comprehensive risk of THMs uptake were 49.8% (Cd), 23.4% (pH), 13.8% (Cr) and 13.0% (organic carbon).

CONCLUSION

The total pollution levels of THMs fell outside of the safety domain in growth soils. Furthermore, more attention needs to be paid to Cd pollution owing to its low environment background value and high accumulation ability. Three main soil parameters (Cr content, pH, organic carbon) played important roles in the formations and accumulations of THMs in chestnuts. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Assessment of heavy metal (HM) contamination in agricultural soil lands in northern Telangana, India: an approach of spatial distribution and multivariate statistical analysis

The contamination of heavy metals (HMs) in agricultural soil lands has attracted the environmental world due to their abundance, persistence, and toxicity. A study has been conducted to evaluate the degree of HM contamination in the agricultural soils of northern Telangana, using geo-accumulation index (I_geo), pollution index (PI), pollution load index (PLI), enrichment factor (EF), statistical analysis, and also spatial distribution. In this study, a total of 15 surface agricultural soil samples were collected and analyzed for the concentration of HMs including Cr, Cu, Co, Ba, V, As, Ni, Pb, and Zn. Their average values vary from 3.5 to 778, which show the increasing order of their abundance: As < Ni < Pb < Co < Cu < Zn < Cr < V < Ba. The concentrations of Ba, V, Zn, and Cu are significantly higher than their guideline values, while Co, Ni, Pb, Zn, and As are within prescribed limits proposed by Canadian soil quality guidelines. The highest I_geo (1.04) indicated the extreme degree of contamination due to Cu. The estimated PI and PLI specified the low to moderate soil pollution, whereas EF showed the moderate soil pollution due to Cr, Co, V, Zn, and As. According to principal component analysis with eigenvalue, more than one account for 53.020% of the total variance, indicating the major source of anthropogenic activity. Spatial distribution maps of HMs displayed four highly polluted zones found in the agricultural sites such as Oni, Yamcha, Bederelli, and Mudhol, in northern Telangana.
