Removal of Cu(II) from wastewater by using mechanochemically activated carbonate-based tailings through chemical precipitation

Simultaneous Visual Detection and Removal of Cu2+ with Electrospun Self-Supporting Flexible Amidated Polyacrylonitrile/Branched Polyethyleneimine Nanofiber Membranes

Sensitive detection and effective removal of copper ions (Cu²⁺) from water are still arduous tasks required to protect public health and environmental safety because of the serious impacts of Cu²⁺ on humans and other organisms. Herein, we report the design and fabrication of self-supporting flexible amidated polyacrylonitrile/branched polyethyleneimine nanofiber membranes (abbreviated as aPAN/BPEI NMs) via facile electrospinning and a subsequent hydrothermal method, which are used not only as strips for the visual detection of Cu²⁺ but also as effective adsorbents for the removal of Cu²⁺ from water. Because aPAN/BPEI NMs are self-supporting, they can be easily removed from the solution to reduce secondary pollution to the environment. Based on the high Cu²⁺ binding capacity of BPEI, Cu²⁺ ions are adsorbed on the aPAN/BPEI NMs, which leads to the appearance of new absorbance bands at 280 and 636 nm and a color change from yellow to blue. aPAN/BPEI NMs are utilized for the visual detection of Cu²⁺ with a linear range of 50-700 μM and limits of detection of 11.5 and 4.8 μM (absorption peaks at 280 and 636 nm). More importantly, aPAN/BPEI NMs exhibit excellent selectivity and certain recovery with a simple treatment. Furthermore, by utilizing the adsorption characteristics of Cu²⁺ in aqueous media, it can be effectively removed by aPAN/BPEI NMs with a remarkable adsorption capacity of 209.53 mg·g^-1. Additionally, the removal of Cu²⁺ by aPAN/BPEI NMs does not exhibit interference by other foreign ions. The adsorption process conforms well to the pseudo-second order (PSO) kinetic model and Jovanovich model, proving that adsorption occurs via chemical and monolayer adsorption mechanisms. Accordingly, this work will provide theoretical and technical support for the design and fabrication of novel heavy metal ion detection-removal integrated materials exhibiting high sensitivity and strong adsorption.

Toward broader applications of iron ore waste in pollution control: Adsorption of norfloxacin

Norfloxacin, a kind of antibiotic frequently detected in environments, represents a group of non-persistent organic pollutants with latent risks to the ecosystem. Iron ore waste, generated and accumulated in large quantities from the iron/steel industry, was evaluated as a potential sorbent for norfloxacin removal. Kinetics analysis showed that the adsorption process reached equilibrium at 72 h, and the adsorption process could be best defined by the pseudo-second-order kinetics with the primary mechanism of norfloxacin adsorption suggested to be cation exchange. Further, adsorption of norfloxacin to iron ore waste was shown to be facilitated by the pH range of 2-10, low cation concentration, and low temperature, which are characteristic of natural surface waters, suggesting the potential of practical applications in aquatic environments. These findings provide new insight into the potentials of beneficial reuse for iron ore waste in the adsorptive removal of environmental pollutants.

Silver Nanoparticles Functionalized with Sodium Mercaptoethane Sulfonate to Remove Copper from Water by the Formation of a Micellar Phase

This work presents a novel procedure for the removal of Cu2+ from water, an essential element in human nutrition considered toxic in high concentrations, based on a microextraction technique involving the formation of a micellar phase. To achieve the total elimination of copper from aqueous samples, a Cu2+-complexing reagent based on silver nanoparticles functionalized with sodium mercaptoethane sulfonate (AgNPs@MESNa) was used. The complex formed by Cu2+ and the reagent was extracted into a micellar microphase formed by Triton X-114, a harmless surfactant. Volumes of 200 µL of the 10−4 mol L−1 suspension of AgNPs@MESNa and 100 µL of a solution of Triton X-114 at 30% m/m were employed to successfully remove 10 mg L−1 of Cu from 20 mL of water samples. The time and temperature needed to achieve 100% microextraction efficiency were 10 min and 40 °C, respectively. The procedure is considered environmentally friendly due to the low volume of the extracting phase and the simple experimental conditions that achieve total removal of Cu2+ from water samples.
