Effects of sediment oxidation on phosphorus transformation in three large shallow eutrophic lakes in China

Reconstructing a 300-year history of phosphorus cycle in west Chaohu Lake, China

Anthropogenic activities could significantly increase nutrients loading, especially phosphorus (P), into aquatic systems, leading to eutrophication and disturbance of ecosystems. Detailed investigation of P cycling and its controlling factors in modern lakes could help understand mechanisms behind eutrophication, thus provide suggestions for future environmental management. Here, we investigate evolution history of P and iron (Fe) cycling over the last ∼300 years in west Chaohu Lake, a typical eutrophic lake in East China. The combination of 210Pb-137Cs dating and elemental analysis demonstrates drastic escalation of P input and organic carbon burial since 1960s, coincided with the rapid growth of human population near this region. P phase partitioning data indicate that Fe-bound P (PFe) is the predominant P pool of sediments in Chaohu Lake, which also regulates the evolving trend of reactive P (Preac). Moreover, the highest fraction of PFe is consistent with observations via P K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (P XANES). In addition, Fe speciation results show a principal contribution of Fe (hydr)oxides (Feox) and negligible presence of pyrite, suggesting a generally oxygenated depositional environment, where P could be preferentially sequestrated in sediments in association with Fe oxide minerals. Relatively high molar organic carbon/organic P (Corg/Porg) but low Corg/Preac ratios also support limited recycling of Preac in west Chaohu Lake. This study reveals that human activities play an important role in leading to the eutrophication of Chaohu Lake. Future environmental management could utilize the coupling of P and Fe oxides to remove P from water column.

Phosphorus release from the sediment of a drinking water reservoir under the influence of seasonal hypoxia

Seasonal sediment internal phosphorus (P) release may cause water eutrophication and impair water quality in drinking water reservoir. During a year-long field investigation, the effects of the microenvironment on the release of internal phosphorus were meticulously analyzed using high-resolution peepers technique and microelectrode system. The release mechanisms of P fractions from the reservoir sediments were also explored. The results showed that seasonal fluctuations in temperature, dissolved oxygen, redox potential, and pH at the sediment-water interface impacted the release of P fractions from the studied reservoir sediment. Higher diffusive fluxes of soluble reactive PO43- and Fe2+ across the sediment-water interface (SWI) were observed in the warmer season and were approximately 14.5 times and 16.5 times than those in winter, respectively. Driven by seasonal hypoxia, the reservoir sediment functioned as a P sink in winter and became a P source in summer and autumn. The reduction of Fe-bound P and mineralization of organic P were the primary mechanisms driving sediment P release, which explains the increased P flux in the warmer season and lower P flux in winter. The findings indicated that elevated temperatures and anaerobic conditions were conducive to the activation of P in sediments, whereas lower temperatures and aerobic conditions promoted the immobilization of P. This study provided new insights into seasonal P cycling in reservoirs that can contribute to the formulation of targeted reservoir management strategies.

Effects of switching redox conditions on sediment phosphorus immobilization by calcium/aluminum composite capping: Performance, ecological safety and mechanisms

There many materials were used in lake restoration to immobilize phosphorus (P) and reduce the effect of eutrophication. Among them, calcium/aluminum composite (CAC) showed a good capacity of P adsorption. However, a comprehensive of its performance, ecological safety, and the mechanism of P passivation in the aluminum-bound P (Al -P) dominated sediments under varying redox conditions remains incomplete. In the current study, both unwashed CAC (UCAC) and washed CAC (WCAC) showed good P adsorption properties, and the greatest maximum capacity for P adsorption (Qmax) reached 206.8 mg/g at pH 8.5 for UCAC. The SRP and TP in the overlying water of the uncapped sediments showed a decrease-increase-decrease trend in a sequence of transition from aerobic to anaerobic to re-aerobic stages. In contrast, the SRP and TP of the two CACs-capped sediments were maintained low. Phosphorus forms in the uncapped sediment also underwent significant changes during continuous variation of dissolved oxygen (DO) levels. In particular, the decrease in iron-bound P (Fe-P) and Al-P was significantly promoted in the anaerobic phase, and the released P was reabsorbed to form mainly Fe-P in the re-aerobic phase. The CACs-capping promoted the transformation of Fe-P to residual P (Res-P), forming a thick static layer in the surface sediment, thus significantly inhibiting sediment P release. Moreover, the CACs-capping did not induce the Al3+ leaching and significant changes of the microbial community in sediments, and their performances of P immobilization could keep stable to resist the redox variation, which promised to be a good choice for P passivation in eutrophic lake sediments dominated by Al/Fe-P. These findings also confirmed that the risk of P release from Al/Fe-P (mainly Al-P)-dominated sediments was strongly influenced by continuously changing redox conditions, and was probably enhanced by the formation of Fe-P from the resorption of the released P.

Effect of capping mode on control of phosphorus release from sediment by lanthanum hydroxide

The use of in situ active capping to control phosphorus release from sediment has attracted more and more attentions in recent years. It is important to identify the effect of capping mode on the control of phosphorus release from sediment by the in situ active capping method. In this study, the impact of capping mode on the restraint of phosphorus migration from sediment into overlying water (OW) by lanthanum hydroxide (LH) was studied. Under no suspended particulate matter (SPM) deposition condition, LH capping effectively restrained the liberation of endogenous phosphorus into OW during anoxia, and the inactivation of diffusive gradient in thin film-unstable phosphorus (UP_DGT) and mobile phosphorus (P_Mobile) in the topmost sediment served as a significant role in the restraint of endogenous phosphorus migration into OW by LH capping. Under no SPM deposition, although the transformation of capping mode from the single high dose capping to the multiple smaller doses capping had a certain negative impact on the restraint efficiency of endogenous phosphorus liberation to OW by LH in the early period of application, it increased the stability of phosphorus in the static layer in the later period of application. Under SPM deposition condition, LH capping had the capability to mitigate the risk of endogenous phosphorus liberation into OW under anoxia conditions, and the inactivation of UP_DGT and P_Mobile in the topmost sediment was a significant mechanism for the control of sediment phosphorus liberation into OW by LH capping. Under SPM deposition condition, the change in the covering mode from the one-time high dose covering to the multiple smaller doses covering decreased the efficiency of LH to limit the endogenous phosphorus transport into OW in the early period of application, but it increased the performance of LH to restrain the sedimentary P liberation during the later period of application. The results of this work suggest that the multiple LH capping is a promising approach for controlling the internal phosphorus loading in freshwater bodies where SPM deposition often occurs in the long run.

Water depth determines spatial and temporal phosphorus retention by controlling ecosystem transition and P-binding metal elements

Shallow lakes are more susceptible to eutrophication than deep lakes. The geochemical and biogeochemical mechanisms controlling the vulnerability to eutrophication for deep lakes and shallow lakes remain unknown. Therefore, we investigated the combined Phosphorus (P) retention mechanism with P fractions, water depth, distribution of P-binding metal elements, and macrophytes coverage in a degrading ecosystem of Erhai Lake. We concluded that different mechanisms control the P retention in deep-water areas and shallow-water areas. In shallow areas covered by macrophytes, the biogeochemical process manipulates the P retention by changing the total organic carbon (TOC), calcium (Ca) distributions and turbulence. In deep areas without macrophyte coverage, the aluminum (Al) and iron (Fe) distributions control the P retention by a physicochemical process. Manganese (Mn) was found to be a potential proxy in tracking the kinetic release and readsorb of redox-sensitive P (BD-P) in deep areas. The historical record and core sample indicate that the hydrological engineering induced water depth variation is a vital factor changing the ecosystem of Erhai Lake by forming a large area of intermediate area where macrophytes could only survive at low water level. The uplift of water level in the 1990s gradually changed the ecosystem of Erhai Lake from macrophyte-dominated to algal-macrophyte concomitant that reduced the accumulation of stable P fractions and their binding metals. Macrophytes were capable to preserve P in biomass in the macrophyte-dominated ecosystem, which released 150% and 72% of more labile organic P (NaOH25-nrP) and BD-P in the sediment after the deterioration than before, respectively. Therefore, water depth is a prerequisite to restoring the P preservation capacity of sediment and the macrophyte ecosystem. Further hydraulic engineering projects should consider the effect of water-level-variation-induced ecosystem transition.

Historical changes of sedimentary P-binding forms and their ecological driving mechanism in a typical "grass-algae" eutrophic lake

With the transformation of lake ecosystem from "clear water" to "turbid water", the residual phosphorus (P) accumulated in sediments may slow down the process of aquatic ecological restoration, and the related mechanisms are complex and need to be better understood. In this study, high-resolution systematic investigation and analysis of P-binding forms in the sediments showed that Lake Dianchi, the largest plateau lake in Southwest China, was enriched with NaOH-rP, HCl-P and Res-P, but depleted in NH₄Cl-P, BD-P and NaOH-nrP. The BD-P, NaOH-nrP and NaOH-rP were the main contributors to potential P release from sediments, while the release potential of NH₄Cl-P was relatively weak (<1%). When the external P loading gradually decreased, the internal P loading of Lake Dianchi was estimated to be 522 mg P/(m²•a) in the past 30 years. The succession of "grass-algae" type in Lake Dianchi coincided with reduced absorption and transformation of potential mobile P and decreased accumulation of stable P, especially the Res-P. Meanwhile, the temporal variation of potential mobile P was a good predictor of ecological degradation and reduced ecosystem sustainability in Lake Dianchi.

Phosphorus Fractions and Release Factors in Surface Sediments of a Tailwater River in Xinmi City, a Case Study

The Shuangji River in Xinmi City is a tailwater-type river. Its main water sources are the effluent from the domestic sewage plant, the effluent from the paper industry sewage plant and the coal well. The construction of wastewater treatment facilities in Xinmi city has significantly reduced the amount of total phosphorus (TP) discharged into Shuangji River. However, phosphorus control in rivers where the overlying waters are predominantly tailwaters is still a challenge, especially as the sediment–water interface’s phosphorus exchange mechanism needs to be investigated in detail. In this study, the content and proportion of each phosphorus fraction in the sediment of a tailwater-type river, the Shuangji River, were determined. It was found that the organic phosphorus (OP) and iron-bound phosphorus (Fe-P) content and proportion were high, and the risk of release was relatively high in the section of the river where the overlying water was the tailwater of a sewage plant. Temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and hydraulic disturbance were also found to control phosphorus forms’ transformation and release in the sediment. Elevated temperatures mainly stimulated the release of OP and Fe-P from the sediments. The dissolution of calcium-bound phosphorus (Ca-P) is the main pathway for phosphorus release under acidic conditions, whereas, under alkaline conditions, phosphorus release is mainly controlled by ion exchange between OH− and Fe-P and metal oxide-bound phosphorus (Al-P). Aerobic versus anaerobic conditions cause changes in Fe-P content in the sediment mainly by changing Fe ions’ chemical valence. Hydrodynamic disturbance accelerates labile-P release, but once the hydrodynamic disturbance stops, the overlying water dissolved total phosphorus (DTP) concentration rapidly decreases to a similar concentration as before.
