Evolution in mitigation approaches for petroleum oil-polluted environment: recent advances and future directions

A comprehensive study on diesel oil bioremediation under microcosm conditions using a combined microbiological, enzymatic, mass spectrometry, and metabarcoding approach

This study aims at the application of a marine fungal consortium (Aspergillus sclerotiorum CRM 348 and Cryptococcus laurentii CRM 707) for the bioremediation of diesel oil-contaminated soil under microcosm conditions. The impact of biostimulation (BS) and/or bioaugmentation (BA) treatments on diesel-oil biodegradation, soil quality, and the structure of the microbial community were studied. The use of the fungal consortium together with nutrients (BA/BS) resulted in a TPH (Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon) degradation 42% higher than that obtained by natural attenuation (NA) within 120 days. For the same period, a 72 to 92% removal of short-chain alkanes (C12 to C19) was obtained by BA/BS, while only 3 to 65% removal was achieved by NA. BA/BS also showed high degradation efficiency of long-chain alkanes (C20 to C24) at 120 days, reaching 90 and 92% of degradation of icosane and heneicosane, respectively. In contrast, an increase in the levels of cyclosiloxanes (characterized as bacterial bioemulsifiers and biosurfactants) was observed in the soil treated by the consortium. Conversely, the NA presented a maximum of 37% of degradation of these alkane fractions. The 5-ringed PAH benzo(a)pyrene, was removed significantly better with the BA/BS treatment than with the NA (48 vs. 38 % of biodegradation, respectively). Metabarcoding analysis revealed that BA/BS caused a decrease in the soil microbial diversity with a concomitant increase in the abundance of specific microbial groups, including hydrocarbon-degrading (bacteria and fungi) and also an enhancement in soil microbial activity. Our results highlight the great potential of this consortium for soil treatment after diesel spills, as well as the relevance of the massive sequencing, enzymatic, microbiological and GC-HRMS analyses for a better understanding of diesel bioremediation.

Microbial remediation of oil-contaminated shorelines: a review

Frequent marine oil spills have led to increasingly serious oil pollution along shorelines. Microbial remediation has become a research hotspot of intertidal oil pollution remediation because of its high efficiency, low cost, environmental friendliness, and simple operation. Many microorganisms are able to convert oil pollutants into non-toxic substances through their growth and metabolism. Microorganisms use enzymes' catalytic activities to degrade oil pollutants. However, microbial remediation efficiency is affected by the properties of the oil pollutants, microbial community, and environmental conditions. Feasible field microbial remediation technologies for oil spill pollution in the shorelines mainly include the addition of high-efficiency oil degrading bacteria (immobilized bacteria), nutrients, biosurfactants, and enzymes. Limitations to the field application of microbial remediation technology mainly include slow start-up, rapid failure, long remediation time, and uncontrolled environmental impact. Improving the environmental adaptability of microbial remediation technology and developing sustainable microbial remediation technology will be the focus of future research. The feasibility of microbial remediation techniques should also be evaluated comprehensively.

Effects of marine diesel on microbial diversity and activity in high Arctic beach sediments

Global warming induced sea ice loss increases Arctic maritime traffic, enhancing the risk of ecosystem contamination from fuel spills and nutrient loading. The impact of marine diesel on bacterial metabolic activity and diversity, assessed by colorimetric assay, 16S rRNA and metagenomic sequencing, of Northwest Passage (Arctic Ocean) beach sediments was assessed with nutrient amendment at environmentally relevant temperatures (5 and 15 °C). Higher temperature and nutrients stimulated microbial activity, while diesel reduced it, with metabolism inhibited at and above 0.01 % (without nutrients) and at 1 % (with nutrients) diesel inclusions. Diesel exposure significantly decreased microbial diversity and selected for Psychrobacter genus. Microbial hydrocarbon degradation, organic compound metabolism, and exopolysaccharide production gene abundances increased under higher diesel concentrations. Metagenomic binning recovered nine MAGs/bins with hydrocarbon degradation genes. We demonstrate a nutrients' rescue-type effect in diesel contaminated microbial communities via enrichment of microorganisms with stress response, aromatic compound, and ammonia assimilation metabolisms.

Impacts of rhizoremediation and biostimulation on soil microbial community, for enhanced degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons in crude oil-contaminated agricultural soils

Hydrocarbonoclastic bacterial strains were isolated from rhizosphere of plants growing in crude oil-contaminated sites of Assam, India. These bacteria showed plant growth-promoting attributes, even when exposed to crude oil. Two independent pot trials were conducted to test the rhizodegradation ability of the bacterial consortium in combination of plants Azadirchta indica or Delonix regia in crude oil-contaminated soil. Field experiments were conducted at two crude oil-contaminated agricultural field at Assam (India), where plants (A. indica or D. regia) were grown with the selected bacterial consortium consisting of five hydrocarbonoclastic bacterial isolates (Gordonia amicalis BB-DAC, Pseudomonas aeruginosa BB-BE3, P. citronellolis BB-NA1, Rhodococcus ruber BB-VND, and Ochrobactrum anthropi BB-NM2), and NPK was added to the soil for biostimulation. The bacterial consortium-NPK biostimulation led to change in rhizosphere microbiome with enhanced degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHs) in soils contaminated with crude oil. After 120 days of planting A. indica + consortium + NPK treatment, degradation of PHs was found to be up to 67%, which was 55% with D. regia with the same treatment. Significant changes in the activities of plant and soil enzymes were also noted. The shift is bacterial community was also apparent as with A. indica, the relative abundance of Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Acidobacteria increased by 35.35%, 26.59%, and 20.98%, respectively. In the case of D. regia, the relative abundance of Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Acidobacteria were increased by 39.28%, 35.79%, and 9.60%, respectively. The predicted gene functions shifted in favor of the breakdown of xenobiotic compounds. This study suggests that a combination of plant-bacterial consortium and NPK biostimulation could be a productive approach to bioengineering the rhizosphere microbiome for the purpose of commercial bioremediation of crude oil-contaminated sites, which is a major environmental issue faced globally.

Development of immobilized novel fungal consortium for the efficient remediation of cyanide-contaminated wastewaters

Free cyanide is a hazardous pollutant released from steel industries. Environmentally-safe remediation of cyanide-contaminated wastewater is required. In this work, Pseudomonas stutzeri (ASNBRI_B12), Trichoderma longibrachiatum (ASNBRI_F9), Trichoderma saturnisporum (ASNBRI_F10) and Trichoderma citrinoviride (ASNBRI_F14) were isolated from blast-furnace wastewater and activated-sludge by enrichment culture. Elevated microbial growth, rhodanese activity (82 %) and GSSG (128 %) were observed with 20 mg-CN L^-1. Cyanide degradation > 99 % on 3rd d as evaluated through ion chromatography, followed by first-order kinetics (r² = 0.94-0.99). Cyanide degradation in wastewater (20 mg-CN L^-1, pH 6.5) was studied in ASNBRI_F10 and ASNBRI_F14 which displayed increased biomass to 49.7 % and 21.6 % respectively. Maximum cyanide degradation of 99.9 % in 48 h was shown by an immobilized consortium of ASNBRI_F10 and ASNBRI_F14. FTIR analysis revealed that cyanide treatment alters functional groups on microbial cell walls. The novel consortium of T. saturnisporum-T. citrinoviride in the form of immobilized culture can be employed to treat cyanide-contaminated wastewater.

Hydrate as a by-product in CO2 leakage during the long-term sub-seabed sequestration and its role in preventing further leakage

Subsurface sequestration of CO₂ produced by industrial production is an effective way to control the excessive emission of greenhouse gases and alleviate the potential global warming. However, CO₂ leakage is likely to occur in its long-term sub-seabed sequestration, posing a great threat to the marine environment and the marine ecology. Previous investigations mainly focused on the implementation of CO₂ sequestration project, ignoring the subsequent potential environmental hazards such as CO₂ leakage, let alone the post-treatment of these accidents. In the present work, secondary sequestration mechanism of hydrate-bearing sediment for leaked CO₂ was explored, and the effect of two important factors (hydrate saturation and sediment thickness) on it was then analyzed. It is expected to provide reference for exploring engineering measures to secondary sequestrate the leaked CO₂ and avoid the catastrophic environmental accidents. The experimental results demonstrate that the role of hydrate in secondary sequestration for leaked CO₂ is mainly due to its filling and occupation of the migration channels in sediment. In addition, due to the secondary sequestration of CO₂ hydrate, change in seawater pH value caused by dissolution of leaked CO₂ in water can be significantly weakened. Besides, with the increasing hydrate saturation and sediment thickness, CO₂ hydrate plays a progressively obvious role in secondary sequestration of CO₂ and avoiding great change in the marine environment. In this way, the leaked CO₂ can be secondary sequestrated by designing/optimizing the characteristics of hydrate-bearing sediment. The investigation demonstrates that most of the leaked CO₂ can be secondary sequestrated only when the hydrate saturation exceeds 0.30 and/or thickness of hydrate-bearing sediment exceeds 3.0 cm. The experimental investigation herein can provide technical support for avoiding environmental disasters caused by the leakage of long-term sequestrated CO₂.

The Interaction among Microbiota, Epigenetic Regulation, and Air Pollutants in Disease Prevention

Environmental pollutants can influence microbiota variety, with important implications for the general wellbeing of organisms. In subjects at high-risk of cancer, gut, and lung microbiota are distinct from those of low-risk subjects, and disease progression is associated with microbiota alterations. As with many inflammatory diseases, it is the combination of specific host and environmental factors in certain individuals that provokes disease outcomes. The microbiota metabolites influence activity of epigenetic enzymes. The knowledge of the mechanisms of action of environmental pollution now includes not only the alteration of the gut microbiota but also the interaction between different human microbiota niches such as the lung–gut axis. The epigenetic regulations can reprogram differentiated cells in response to environmental changes. The microbiota can play a major role in the progression and suppression of several epigenetic diseases. Accordingly, the maintenance of a balanced microbiota by monitoring the environmental stimuli provides a novel preventive approach for disease prevention. Metagenomics technologies can be utilized to establish new mitigation approaches for diseases induced by polluted environments. The purpose of this review is to examine the effects of particulate matter exposure on the progression of disease outcomes as related to the alterations of gut and lung microbial communities and consequent epigenetic modifications.
