Microbial community response to biostimulation and bioaugmentation in crude oil-polluted sediments of the Persian Gulf

The Persian Gulf is a transit point for a lot of crude oil at the international level. The purpose of this research is to compare two methods of biostimulation and bioaugmentation for degradation of sediments contaminated with crude oil in the Persian Gulf. In this research, six types of microcosms were designed (Sediments from Khark Island). Some indicators such as: the quantity of marine bacteria, enzyme activity (Catalase, Polyphenol oxidase, Dehydrogenase), biodiversity indices and the percentage of crude oil degradation were analyzed during different days (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 and 120). The results of this research showed that the highest quantity of heterotrophic and crude oil-degrading bacteria was found in the sixth microcosm (SB). This microcosm represents a combination of two methods: bioaugmentation and biostimulation (3.9 × 106 CFU g-1). Following crude oil pollution, the activity of catalase and polyphenol oxidase increased and the dehydrogenase enzyme decreased. The bioaugmentation microcosm exhibited the highest activity of enzymes among all the microcosms studied. Predominant bacteria in each microcosm belonged to: Cellulosimicrobium, Shewanella, Alcanivorax and Cobetia. The highest degradation of crude oil is related to the Stimulation-Bioaugmentation microcosm (SB). The statistical results of this research proved that there is a significant relationship between the type of method chosen for biodegradation with the sampling time and the quantity of marine bacteria. The results of this research confirm that crude oil pollution in the Persian Gulf sediments can be reduced by choosing the proper bioremediation method.

The application of laser‑induced fluorescence in oil spill detection

Over the past two decades, oil spills have been one of the most serious ecological disasters, causing massive damage to the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems as well as the socio-economy. In view of this situation, several methods have been developed and utilized to analyze oil samples. Among these methods, laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) technology has been widely used in oil spill detection due to its classification method, which is based on the fluorescence characteristics of chemical material in oil. This review systematically summarized the LIF technology from the perspective of excitation wavelength selection and the application of traditional and novel machine learning algorithms to fluorescence spectrum processing, both of which are critical for qualitative and quantitative analysis of oil spills. It can be seen that an appropriate excitation wavelength is indispensable for spectral discrimination due to different kinds of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons' (PAHs) compounds in petroleum products. By summarizing some articles related to LIF technology, we discuss the influence of the excitation wavelength on the accuracy of the oil spill detection model and proposed several suggestions on the selection of excitation wavelength. In addition, we introduced some traditional and novel machine learning (ML) algorithms and discussed the strengths and weaknesses of these algorithms and their applicable scenarios. With an appropriate excitation wavelength and data processing algorithm, it is believed that laser-induced fluorescence technology will become an efficient technique for real-time detection and analysis of oil spills.

Modelling fuel oil transformation on geographically different seacoasts and assessing their self-cleansing capacity

The present paper considers the results of long-term (up to 17 years) in situ and laboratory research carried out on oiled French, Spanish, and Russian seacoasts. The objective of this research is to quantify the influence of geographical factors on the rates of natural transformation of the heavy fuel oil stranded ashore and to develop an empirical statistical model in order to evaluate the self-cleansing capacity of the coastal environment. In a number of field campaigns, 363 samples of weathered oil slicks and tar balls have been collected and analysed with the use of thin-layer chromatography combined with optical and gravimetric methods. The results obtained have been subjected to multiple nonlinear regression analyses. It has been shown that heavy fuel oil natural attenuation is more active in continental or estuarine environments influenced by nutrient-rich freshwater runoff and characterised by a higher number of sunny days, solar irradiation, and large temperature fluctuations. On the oceanic coasts, especially in sectors with low hydrodynamic energy, these processes take more time. The resulting model allows for the identification and mapping of the most vulnerable seacoasts, characterised by a low potential to degrade oil pollution. This information may be used in the contingency plans in order to optimise clean-up techniques and associated costs.

Marine grade oil adsorption performance of artisanal felt mat made using waste human hair

This is an experimental study that aims to use waste hair in the fight against oil pollution in the sea and to support the art of felt making, which is in danger of extinction. In this way, it is aimed to contribute to sustainability by producing a product for environmental improvement from waste material that does not have any value, and by creating employment by preserving a handicraft with historical basis. As a result of the experiments, it was observed that adsorbent materials made from sheep wool with human hair added in different proportion showed adsorbent performance comparable to their equivalents and superior to some of them.

Oil spill environmental sensitivity mapping of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The current case study focuses on the Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) mapping of Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - a region at risk from petroleum sector pollution. By mapping 981.5 km of coastline and classifying it in 10 oil sensitivity indices, we integrated biotic resources, socioeconomic attributes, and geoenvironmental diversity into a georeferenced database. Results reveal a high oil sensitivity of the bay, with approximately 89 % of the mapped coast scoring ESI 8 and ESI 10. These scores comprise, respectively, estuarine and solid substrate habitats that are sheltered from wave action. Notably, numerous manufacturing and oil handling plants, along with intensive urbanization, also contribute to the bay's oil sensitivity. Additionally, the rich biotic diversity in the study area, particularly in protected areas housing 79 conservation units, further amplifies its environmental vulnerability. This study aims to serve as a reference for detailed ESI mapping of coastal areas in tropical rainy zones with significant environmental diversity, industrial development, and a dense population.

Methodology for the estimation of an oil spill origin: Analysis of the 2019 Brazilian coast oil spill

This research presents a procedure for determining the origin of marine pollution through the use of a time-direct trajectory modeling, associated with a Kriging metamodel technique and Monte Carlo random sampling. These methods were applied to a real case, specifically the oil spill that affected the Brazilian coast in the second half of 2019 and early 2020. A total of 140 trajectories, defined by the geographical coordinates of the origin and the spill date, were generated through Latin Hypercube Sampling and simulated using the PyGNOME model to construct the Kriging metamodel. The metamodel demonstrated cost-effectiveness by efficiently simulating numerous input data combinations which were compared and optimized based on available real data regarding temporal and spatial pollution distribution.

Accelerated deterioration corrosion of X70 steel by oxidation acid-producing process catalyzed by Acinetobacter soli in oil-water environment

Deterioration corrosion occurs between the external surface of oil pipelines and aerobic oil-degrading microorganisms in oil fields. Microorganisms with aerobic oil pollution remediation capabilities may catalyze more serious anaerobic microbial corrosion due to the carbon source supply. In this study, Acinetobacter soli strains were isolated from oil-contaminated environments, and their role in the deterioration corrosion behavior of X70 steel in an oil-water environment was investigated using the EDS multipoint scanning method. The presence of oil controls the deposition of carbon and phosphorus and diffusion of oxygen, leading to significant adhesion attraction and initial growth inhibition of biofilm on the metal surface. A. soli facilitates oxygen transfer and iron ion dissolution, thereby accelerating the pitting corrosion of X70 steel. This corrosion of the X70 steel, in turn, further accelerates the microbial degradation of oil, inhibiting the appearance of calcareous scale in the later stage of corrosion. The corrosion of X70 steel is influenced by microbial degradation, and the specific corrosion behaviors are related to the activity of A. soli in the petroleum environment. This study sheds light on the corrosion mechanisms of X70 steel by A. soli at different stages, providing insights into the interactions between microorganisms, oil pollution, and metal corrosion in oil fields.

Effects of aromatic hydrocarbons and evaluation of oil toxicity modelling for larvae of a tropical coral

Application of oil toxicity modelling for assessing the risk of spills to coral reefs remains uncertain due to a lack of data for key tropical species and environmental conditions. In this study, larvae of the coral Acropora millepora were exposed to six aromatic hydrocarbons individually to generate critical target lipid body burdens (CTLBBs). Larval metamorphosis was inhibited by all six aromatic hydrocarbons, while larval survival was only affected at concentrations >2000 μg L-1. The derived metamorphosis CTLBB of 9.7 μmol g-1 octanol indicates larvae are more sensitive than adult corals, and places A. millepora larvae among the most sensitive organisms in the target lipid model (TLM) databases. Larvae were also more sensitive to anthracene and pyrene when co-exposed to ecologically relevant levels of ultraviolet radiation. The results suggest that the application of the phototoxic TLM would be protective of A. millepora larvae, provided adequate chemical and light data are available.

Vermiremediation of heavy metals (HMs)-contaminated agricultural land: synergistic changes in soil enzyme activities and earthworm's growth parameters

In this investigation the heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Mn, Cr and Ni) remediation potential of Eisenia fetida was studied in the crude oil polluted soil. The potential of E. fetida was evaluated based on the decrease in concentrations of Cu, Zn, Mn, Cr and Ni, and improvement in the soil enzyme activities at the end of 90 days of experimental trials. Moreover, soil health quality, inter-relationship between the enzyme activities and the growth parameters of E. fetida and synergistic relation among the enzyme activities were also evaluated through G-Mean and T-QSI indices, chord plot analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) to confirm the performance of E. fetida during vermiremediation. The results revealed that the soil treated with E. fetida showed a reduction in the concentration of Cu, Zn, Mn, Cr and Ni by 17.4% 19.45%, 9.44%, 23.8% and 9.6% respectively by end of the experimental trials. The cellulase, amylase, polyphenol oxidase, peroxidase, urease, dehydrogenase and catalase activities in the E. fetida-treated soil were enhanced by 89.83%, 99.17%, 142%, 109.9%, 92.9%, 694.3% and 274.5% respectively. The results of SEM-EDS revealed enhancement in the O, K, Na, Mg and P content by 62.36%, 96.2%, 97.9%, 93.7% and 98.2% respectively by the end of the experimental trial. The G-Mean and T-QSI indices also confirmed the improvement in soil enzyme activities thereby indicating the positive influence of E. fetida on soil decontamination process. The chord plot indicated the interrelationship between the earthworm's growth parameters and enzyme activities of the soil as indicated by the high linkage between the nodes. Finally, the PCA confirmed the negative effect of the heavy metals on the soil enzyme activities and synergistic interrelationship between the enzyme activities during the vermiremediation process. Thus, this study demonstrated the changes in the soil enzyme activities and their interconnected influences during vermiremediation of crude oil sourced heavy metals from polluted soil.

Microbial remediation of oil-contaminated shorelines: a review

Frequent marine oil spills have led to increasingly serious oil pollution along shorelines. Microbial remediation has become a research hotspot of intertidal oil pollution remediation because of its high efficiency, low cost, environmental friendliness, and simple operation. Many microorganisms are able to convert oil pollutants into non-toxic substances through their growth and metabolism. Microorganisms use enzymes' catalytic activities to degrade oil pollutants. However, microbial remediation efficiency is affected by the properties of the oil pollutants, microbial community, and environmental conditions. Feasible field microbial remediation technologies for oil spill pollution in the shorelines mainly include the addition of high-efficiency oil degrading bacteria (immobilized bacteria), nutrients, biosurfactants, and enzymes. Limitations to the field application of microbial remediation technology mainly include slow start-up, rapid failure, long remediation time, and uncontrolled environmental impact. Improving the environmental adaptability of microbial remediation technology and developing sustainable microbial remediation technology will be the focus of future research. The feasibility of microbial remediation techniques should also be evaluated comprehensively.

Changing course: Relocating commercial tanker lanes significantly reduces threat of chronic oiling for a top marine predator

A goal for conservation biologists is to show that policies enacted on behalf of an imperiled species results in direct benefits for it. In Argentina, tens of thousands of Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) were estimated to have died from chronic oil pollution each year through the early 1980s. From 1982 to 1990, surveys at sites along approximately 900 km of Chubut Province coastline found that >60 % of penguin carcasses had evidence of oiling in some years. In response to these findings, as well as pressure from non-governmental organizations and the public, provincial and federal authorities in Chubut moved the commercial tanker lanes 20 nautical miles farther offshore in 1997 and required oil tankers to have double hulls. During a second round of surveys in 2001, using most of the same sites as the first survey period, the number of dead and oiled penguins dropped effectively to zero. A policy change not only led to fewer oiled penguins, but also likely increased the survival of adult Magellanic penguins near some of their most significant breeding colonies in Argentina.

Oil trajectory analysis for oil spill surveillance by SAR in the Mediterranean Sea

Oil trajectory analysis (OTA) provides statistics of direction and distance of provenience of oil spills reaching specific coastal sites. Applied to marine protected areas (MPA), this information could be used to introduce priority criteria in satellite oil spill surveillance. OTA in the Mediterranean Sea was based on 10-days oil trajectories tracked backward-in-time for five years (2015-2019) and aggregated on monthly basis. On average, travel time increases from 12 h at 5 km from the coast to 1.5 days at 10 km and 2 days at 15 km. The beaching probability decreases from 25 % at 5 km to 8 % at 10 km and 5 % at 15 km. Locally, the oil transport is influenced by persistent winds and/or energetic current systems in the area. Using an attention threshold of 5 % of beaching probability around MPA, several offshore areas of the Mediterranean Sea deserving high monitoring priority in summer and winter have been identified.

Enhanced remediation of oil-contaminated intertidal sediment by bacterial consortium of petroleum degraders and biosurfactant producers

Oil pollution in intertidal zones is an important environmental issue that has serious adverse effects on coastal ecosystems. This study investigated the efficacy of a bacterial consortium constructed from petroleum degraders and biosurfactant producers in the bioremediation of oil-polluted sediment. Inoculation of the constructed consortium significantly enhanced the removal of C₈-C₄₀n-alkanes (80.2 ± 2.8% removal efficiency) and aromatic compounds (34.4 ± 10.8% removal efficiency) within 10 weeks. The consortium played dual functions of petroleum degradation and biosurfactant production, greatly improving microbial growth and metabolic activities. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) showed that the consortium markedly increased the proportions of indigenous alkane-degrading populations (up to 3.88-times higher than that of the control treatment). Microbial community analysis demonstrated that the exogenous consortium activated the degradation functions of indigenous microflora and promoted synergistic cooperation among microorganisms. Our findings indicated that supplementation of a bacterial consortium of petroleum degraders and biosurfactant producers is a promising bioremediation strategy for oil-polluted sediments.

The effects of nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients on the bioremediation of oil-contaminated waters by Gracilariopsis persica in the coastal areas of Bandar Abbas

This study investigated the influence of nitrogen and phosphorus on the bioremediation of crude oil by Gracilariopsis persica in littoral zone waters. In order to determine the role of nitrogen in bioremediation, urea, ammonium, and nitrate were used with and without phosphorus, with the result that nitrogen had no significant effect on the degradation of oil by Gracilariopsis persica in the littoral zone. Nearly 90 % of the crude oil used in this study was degraded by treatments with added phosphorus and nitrogen. A significant increase in the degradation of oil-contaminated water was observed after the application of phosphorus. Comparatively to the application of phosphorus alone, nitrogen and phosphorus together increased the rate of biodegradation by the algal species. Based on the results of the study, nitrogen and phosphorus have complementary effects on the bioremediation of oil by Gracilariopsis persica.

Detection of marine oil-like features in Sentinel-1 SAR images by supplementary use of deep learning and empirical methods: Performance assessment for the Great Barrier Reef marine park

Continuous monitoring of oil discharges in coastal and open ocean waters using Earth Observation (EO) has undeniably contributed to diminishing their occurrence wherever a detection system was in place, such as in Europe (EMSA's CleanSeaNet) or in the United States (NOAA's OR&R). This study describes the development and testing of a semi-automated oil slick detection system tailored to the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) marine park solely based on EO data as no such service was routinely available in Australia until recently. In this study, a large, curated, historical global dataset of SAR imagery acquired by Sentinel-1 SAR, now publicly available, is used to assess classification techniques, namely an empirical approach and a deep learning model, to discriminate between oil-like features and look-alikes in the scenes acquired over the marine park. An evaluation of this detection system on 10 Sentinel-1 SAR images of the GBR using two performance metrics - the detection accuracy and the false-positive rate (FPR) - shows that the classifiers perform best when combined (accuracy >98 %; FPR 0.01) rather than when used separately. This study demonstrates the benefit of sequentially combining classifiers to improve the detection and monitoring of unreported oil discharge events in SAR imagery. The workflow has also been tested outside the GBR, demonstrating its robustness when applied to other regions such as Australia's Northwest Shelf, Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

Quantitative review summarizing the effects of oil pollution on subarctic and arctic marine invertebrates

While meta-analyses are common in the health and some biological sciences, there is a lack of such analyses for petroleum-related marine research. Oil is a highly complex substance consisting of thousands of different compounds. Measurement limitations, different protocols and a lack of standards in recording and reporting various elements of laboratory experiments impede attempts to homogenize and compare data and identify trends. Nevertheless, oil toxicology research would benefit from meta-analyses, through which we could develop meaningful research questions and design robust experiments. Here we report findings from an effort to quantitatively summarize results from oil toxicology studies on arctic and subarctic marine invertebrates. We discovered that the vast majority of studies was conducted on crustaceans, followed by molluscs. Analyzing the sensitivity of response measures across taxa we found that the most sensitive responses tend to rank low in ecological relevance, while less sensitive response measures tend to be more ecologically relevant. We further uncovered that crustaceans appear to be more sensitive to mechanically dispersed than chemically dispersed oil while the opposite seems true for molluscs, albeit not statistically significant. Both crustaceans and molluscs show a higher sensitivity to fresh than to weathered oil. No differences in the sensitivities of crustacean life stages were found. However, due to a lack of data, many questions remain unanswered. Our study revealed that while trends in responses can be elucidated, heterogeneous experimental protocols and reporting regimes prevent a proper meta-analysis.

Special wettable Azadirachta indica leaves like microarchitecture mesh filtration membrane produced by galvanic replacement reaction for layered oil/water separation

The oil/water separation has received significant attention due to its critical environmental impact. The special wettable surfaces are highly desired to deal with the oil/water mixtures. This work demonstrates a simple two-step method to develop a superhydrophobic Azadirachta indica leaves like Ag-decorated electrochemically copper-coated stainless-steel mesh (SH-AIL-Ag-EC-Cu-Mesh) for efficient separation of oil/water mixtures. In the first step, the electrodeposition of the copper took place on the mesh surface at a suitable applied potential. In the second step, the galvanic replacement reaction between the Ag⁺ and electrodeposited Cu produced the fascinating superhydrophobic Ag leaves on the mesh surface. The SH-AIL-Ag-EC-Cu-Mesh was thoroughly characterized by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX), elemental mapping, surface wettability analysis, and the contact analyzer. The morphological analysis has shown the unique leafy structures of the reduced Ag on the surface of the mesh. The XPS analysis has confirmed that most of the Ag present on the surface is in zerovalent form. The combination of the electrodeposition and the displacement reaction between the copper and the silver turned the surface superhydrophobic, and the water contact angle was significantly improved from 115° to 158°. The designed SH-AIL-Ag-EC-Cu-Mesh has shown excellent selectivity for oil in oil/water mixtures with a separation efficiency of 99.1% with an exceptionally high flux of 8963 L m^-2h^-1. The SH-AIL-Ag-EC-Cu-Mesh has shown excellent reusability, and after 15 cycles of separation, no significant decrease in the oil/water separation efficiency was observed.

Effects of microplastics alone or with sorbed oil compounds from the water accommodated fraction of a North Sea crude oil on marine mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis)

Microplastics (MPs) can adsorb persistent organic pollutants such as oil hydrocarbons and may facilitate their transfer to organisms (Trojan horse effect). The aim of this study was to examine the effects of a 21 day dietary exposure to polystyrene MPs of 4.5 μm at 1000 particles/mL, alone and with sorbed oil compounds from the water accommodated fraction (WAF) of a naphthenic North Sea crude oil at two dilutions (25 % and 100 %), on marine mussels. An additional group of mussels was exposed to 25 % WAF for comparison. PAHs were accumulated in mussels exposed to WAF but not in those exposed to MPs with sorbed oil compounds from WAF (MPs-WAF), partly due to the low concentration of PAHs in the studied crude oil. Exposure to MPs or to WAF alone altered the activity of enzymes involved in aerobic (isocitrate dehydrogenase) and biotransformation metabolism (glutathione S-transferase). Prevalence of oocyte atresia and volume density of basophilic cells were higher and absorption efficiency lower in mussels exposed to MPs and to WAF than in controls. After 21 days MPs caused DNA damage (Comet assay) in mussel hemocytes. In conclusion, a Trojan horse effect was not observed but both MPs and oil WAF caused an array of deleterious effects on marine mussels at different levels of biological organization.

An investigation of aquatic oil spills in the Philippines from 2000 to 2021

As an archipelago, the Philippines is heavily engaged in domestic and foreign shipping activities which makes it highly vulnerable to oil pollution. It is the purpose of this present paper to make a follow-up review of the oil spill situation in the Philippines which provides analysis and evaluation of aquatic oil spills in the past 22 years. Results showed that the frequency and volume of oil spills generally occur in areas with high maritime traffic and experienced short-term decreases on periods affected by economic recessions. The sources and causes of oil spills are discussed while examining the possible influences of the changing climate. While, these had been identified, there is a gap in the incident reporting of oil spills. It is recommended that data records on oil spill incidents in the Philippines be systematic, consistent and comprehensively entail information not limited to date, locality, source, cause, and spillage amount.

Interaction effects of crude oil and nutrient exposure on settlement of coral reef benthos

Anthropogenic stressors increasingly cause ecosystem-level changes to sensitive marine habitats such as coral reefs. Intensification of coastal development and shipping traffic can increase nutrient and oil pollution on coral reefs, yet these two stressors have not been studied in conjunction. Here, we simulate a disturbance scenario exposing carbonate settlement tiles to nutrient and oil pollution in a full-factorial design with four treatments: control, nutrients, oil, and combination to examine community structure and net primary productivity (NPP) of pioneer communities throughout 28 weeks. Compared to the control treatment oil pollution decreased overall settlement and NPP, while nutrients increased turf algae and NPP. However, the combination of these two stressors resulted in similar community composition and NPP as the control. These results indicate that pioneer communities may experience shifts due to nutrient enrichment, and/or oil pollution. However, the timing and duration of an event will influence recovery trajectories requiring further study.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in mangrove ecosystems: A review

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic pollutants of increasing concern in the different fields of the environment and human health. There are 16 of them that are recognized as priority pollutants by the US environmental protection agency due to their mutagenic and carcinogenic potentials. Due to their hydrophobicity and stability, they are persistent in the environment and can be transported over long distances. Their toxicological effects on multiple species, including humans, as well as their bioaccumulation in the food web became major topics in organic pollutants research this last decade. In the environment, multiple studies have been conducted on their accumulation in the soil and their degradation processes resulting in numerous review papers. However, the dynamics of PAHs in mangrove ecosystems is not yet completely understood. In this review paper, an exhaustive presentation of what is known about PAHs and their transfer, accumulation, and degradation in mangrove ecosystems is offered. This article brings to light the knowledge already acquired on the subject and the perspective research necessary to fully comprehend PAHs dynamics in mangrove ecosystems.

Coral recruits are highly sensitive to heavy fuel oil exposure both in the presence and absence of UV light

Oil pollution remains a prominent local hazard to coral reefs, but the sensitivity of some coral life stages to oil exposure remains unstudied. Exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR), ubiquitous on coral reefs, may significantly increase oil toxicity towards these critical habitat-forming taxa. Here we present the first data on the sensitivity of two distinct post-settlement life stages of the model coral species Acropora millepora to a heavy fuel oil (HFO) water accommodated fraction (WAF) in the absence and presence of UVR. Assessment of lethal and sublethal endpoints indicates that both 1-week-old and 2-month-old recruits (1-wo and 2-mo) were negatively affected by chronic exposures to HFO (7 and 14 days, respectively). Relative growth (1-wo and 2-mo recruits) and survival (1-wo recruits) at end of exposure were the most sensitive endpoints in the absence of UVR, with no effect concentrations (NEC) of 34.3, 5.7 and 29.3 μg L^-1 total aromatic hydrocarbons (TAH; ∑39 monocyclic- and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), respectively. On average, UVR increased the negative effects by 10% for affected endpoints, and latent effects of exposure were evident for relative growth and symbiont uptake of recruits. Other sublethal endpoints, including maximum quantum yield and tissue colour score, were unaffected by chronic HFO exposure. A comparison of putative species-specific sensitivity constants for these ecologically relevant endpoints, indicates A. millepora recruits may be as sensitive as the most sensitive species currently included in oil toxicity databases. While the low intensity UVR only significantly increased the negative effects of the oil for one endpoint, the majority of endpoints showed trends towards increased toxicity in the presence of UVR. Therefore, the data presented here further support the standard incorporation of UVR in oil toxicity testing for tropical corals.

Hydrocarbon pollution in the waters and sediments of the Kerch Strait

The results of studying the content and composition of aliphatic hydrocarbons and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the suspended particulate matter of surface waters and in the surface layer of bottom sediments in 2019-2021 in the Kerch Strait in comparison with earlier studies in other areas of the Black Sea (Theodosia Gulf, Tuapse area, Coastal waters of the Crimean Peninsula, Big Sochi, Central part of the Sea) are presented. Despite the high concentrations of aliphatic hydrocarbons (especially in the waters of the strait itself: 28-254 on average 87 μg/L. The highest content of aliphatic hydrocarbons was confined to the cross-section through the Kerch Strait. Accumulation of aliphatic hydrocarbons, as well as the suspended particulate matter, occurs in the western part of the Strait, which is associated with the predominant wind direction and coastal orography. The composition of alkanes did not correspond to the smooth distribution of homologues characteristic of oil. Their distribution was bimodal in most samples, which may indicate a mixed genesis of alkanes. Among the low-molecular-weight alkanes either even numbered autochthonous alkanes n-C₁₆, C₁₈, C₂₂, arising during the microbial transformation of aliphatic hydrocarbons, or n-C₁₇, indicating the inclusion of phyto- and zooplankton alkanes, prevailed. Despite the different sources of hydrocarbons input, the distribution of the total concentrations of aliphatic hydrocarbons and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons basically coincided. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons composition was dominated by fluoranthene and pyrene, which are formed in high-temperature combustion processes Low values of the Σnaphthalenes/Phen ratio (0.05-0.11) may indicate an insignificant inclusion of petroleum polyarenes. In contrast to suspension of surface waters, the highest content of hydrocarbons in the surface sediments was found not in the strait, but at stations in areas with aleurite-pelitic sediments, which is due to the pattern of currents in these areas and the higher sorption capacity of finely dispersed sediments. The average C_org content in July 2020, was 1.8 times lower (0.34%) than in September 2019 (0.63%), and aliphatic hydrocarbons, on the contrary, was 2.2 times higher (47 μg/g) than in April 2019 (21 μg/g). In surface sediments the maximum concentration of aliphatic hydrocarbons was established in July 2020 (233 μg/g), and the highest average content in July 2021 (58 μg/g). This area is also associated with higher concentrations of aliphatic hydrocarbons in the composition of C_org -≥1%. The composition of alkanes in surface sediments differed from their composition in suspension. The ratio of low-to-high molecular weight homologues (L/H = 0.08-0.54) was lower and the odd-to-even ratio (CPI = 1.19-4.58) was higher than in particulate matter. Due to the coarse composition of sediments, the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in their surface layer was lower (0-631 ng/g) compared to other areas of the Black Sea. In their composition, along with fluoranthene and pyrene, methylated naphthalene homologues also belonged to the dominant compounds. Correlation analysis of individual polyarenes, as well as factor analysis, indicates their mixed genesis oil + pyrogenic, with the preference of the latter in most samples. The entry of pollutants into the marine environment increases the hydrocarbons content in water and bottom sediments, creating a modern hydrocarbon background.

Recent progress on in-situ chemical oxidation for the remediation of petroleum contaminated soil and groundwater

Accidental oil leaks and spills can often result in severe soil and groundwater pollution. In situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) is a powerful and efficient remediation technology. In this review, the applications and recent advances of three commonly applied in-situ oxidants (hydrogen peroxide, persulfate, and permanganate), and the gap in remediation efficiency between lab-scale and field-scale applications is critically assessed. Feasible improvements for these measures, especially solutions for the 'rebound effect', are discussed. The removal efficiencies reported in 108 research articles related to petroleum-contaminated soil and groundwater were analyzed. The average remediation efficiency of groundwater (82.7%) by the three oxidants was higher than that of soil (65.8%). A number of factors, including non-aqueous phase liquids, adsorption effect, the aging process of contaminants, low-permeability zones, and vapor migration resulted in a decrease in the remediation efficiency and caused the residual contaminants to rebound from 19.1% of the original content to 57.7%. However, the average remediation efficiency of ISCO can be increased from 40.9% to 75.5% when combined with other techniques. In the future, improving the utilization efficiency of reactive species and enhancing the contact efficiency between oxidants and petroleum contaminants will be worthy of attention. Multi-technical combinations, such as the ISCO coupled with phase-transfer, viscosity control, controlled release or natural attenuation, can be effective methods to solve the rebound problem.

Study on the preparation conditions and degradation performance of an efficient immobilized microbial agent for marine oil pollution

In the process of handling marine oil spills accidents, the biological method has attracted wide attention due to its low cost and no secondary pollution. However, in the process of practical application, there are problems such as low microbial density and great influence of environmental factors when the oil is treated by spraying microorganisms on the sea surface. This study used immobilized microorganism technology to solve the above-mentioned problems. In this study, the bacteria immobilized on cinnamon shell (CS) with good degradation performance were obtained by optimizing preparation conditions. Under the optimal conditions of sodium alginate (SA) concentration of 4.57%, CS concentration of 1.28%, and the CaCl₂ concentration of 2.45%, the degradation rate of diesel in 5 days reached 74.04%. The reusability of immobilized microbial agents was further studied. The study designed three cycles of repeated degradation experiments. The results showed that the degradation rate of diesel can still reach 60.12% after three times of reuse, which indicated the reusability of the immobilized microbial agents was excellent. The decrease in degradation rate of diesel was mainly related to the fragmentation of immobilized microbial agents and the decrease in microbial biomass.

Effects of oil contamination on plant growth and development: a review

Oil spills generate several environmental impacts and have become more common with the increase in petroleum extraction, refining, transportation, and trade. In soil, oil contamination increases water and nutrient availability and compaction, directly affecting plant growth and development. Different aspects of phytotoxicity can be observed and will vary according to the characteristics of soil and plants. Oil-contaminated soil also results in negative effects on biomass and changes in leaves and roots. Investigating the effects of oil contamination on plant growth and development can aid in the conservation of plant species and in the development of techniques such as bioremediation and biomonitoring. Thus, this review aims to discuss the main effects of oil contamination on plants, such as environmental stress and morphological, physiological, and anatomical changes, and the strategies developed by plants to survive contamination, as well as to identify plants with phytoremediation potential that can assist in removing oil from the environment.

Metabolomic profiles in relation to benchmark polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) and trace elements in two seabird species from Arctic Canada

While exposure of birds to oil-related contaminants has been documented, the related adverse effects this exposure has on Arctic marine birds remain unexplored. Metabolomics can play an important role to explore biologically relevant metabolite biomarkers in relation to different stressors, even at benchmark levels of contamination. The aim of this study was to characterize the metabolomics profiles in relation to polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) and trace elements in the liver of two seabird species in the Canadian Arctic. In July 2018, black guillemots (Cepphus grylle) and thick-billed murres (Uria lomvia) were collected by hunters from a region where natural oil seeps occur in the seabed near Qikiqtarjuaq, Nunavut, Canada. A total of 121 metabolites were identified in liver tissue samples using reversed phase and hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry platforms to detect non-polar and polar metabolites, respectively. Sixty-nine metabolites showed excellent repeatability and linearity and were used to examine possible effects of oil-related contaminants exposure (PACs and trace elements). Metabolites including 3-hydroxy anthranilic acid, adenine, adenosine, adenosine mono-phosphate, ascorbic acid, butyrylcarnitine, cholic acid, guanosine, guanosine mono-phosphate, inosine, norepinephrine and threonine showed significant differences (more than two fold) between the two species. Elevated adenine and adenosine, along with decreased reduced/oxidized glutathione ratio, highlighted the potential for oxidative stress in murres. Lipid peroxidation and superoxide dismutase activity assays also confirmed these metabolomic findings. These results will help to characterize the baseline metabolomic profiles of Arctic seabird species with different foraging behaviour and trace element burden.

Using beached bird data to assess seabird oiling susceptibility

Oil spills can cause severe impacts on seabirds, the extent of which varies by species. We investigated taxon-specific susceptibility using data from the Nestucca and Tenyo Maru oil spills in the northeast Pacific together with seasonally and spatially overlapping baseline beached bird abundance data collected over a 17-year time-period. Multivariate analyses revealed patterns of variation between spill and non-spill data, primarily driven by differences in the relative abundance of common murres (Uria aalge) and northern fulmars (Fulmarus glacialis). In subsequent susceptibility analyses, alcid (Alcidae spp.) carcasses were generally overrepresented in spill data, while gulls (Larus spp.), tubenoses (Procellariformes spp.), and cormorants (Phalacrocoracidae spp.) were generally under-represented. We found that the baseline data had high variability, suggesting a need for many years of baseline data. We propose that where appropriate baseline data exists, this method can be employed to investigate the seabirds most vulnerable to oiling.

Year-to-year variability of oil pollution along the Eastern Arabian Sea: The impact of COVID-19 imposed lock-downs

This study investigated the year-to-year variability in the occurrence, abundance and sources of oil spills in the Eastern Arabian Sea (EAS) using sentinel-1 imagery and identified the potential oil spills vulnerable zones. The four consecutive year's data acquired from 2017 to 2020 (March-May) reveal three oil spill hot spot zones. The ship-based oil spills were dominant over zone's-1 (off Gujarat) and 3 (off Karnataka and Kerala), and the oil field based over zone-2 (off Maharashtra). The abundance of oil spills was significantly low in zone-1, only 14.30km² (1.2%) during lock-down due to the covid-19 pandemic. Whereas, the year-to-year oil spills over zone's 2 and 3 are not significantly varied (170.29 km² and 195.01 km²), further suggesting the influence of oil exploration and international tanker traffic are in operation during the lock-down. This study further recommends that manual clustering is the best method to study the distribution of unknown oil spills.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in fishery resources affected by the 2019 oil spill in Brazil: Short-term environmental health and seafood safety

We present herein a short-term impact on marketed fisheries and human health safety in the first three months following the 2019 oil spill in Brazil. Total PAHs in the edible tissues of 34 finfish and shellfish species ranged from 8.71 to 418 ng g^-1 wet weight, with robust evidence supporting crude oil contamination. A prevalence of low molecular weight PAHs was observed, mainly naphthalenes. A decreasing trend in mean total PAHs from mollusks (134 ng g^-1) to crustaceans (73.9 ng g^-1) and to fishes (45.3 ng g^-1) was noted. The spilled oil caused immediate negative impacts on the local seafood market, despite less than 3% of samples exhibited concentrations above levels of concern, revealing a low probability for human health risks. These findings demonstrate that governments must be prepared to provide not only science-based quick responses but also effective science communication for society upon environmental disasters.

Biodegradation of water-accommodated aromatic oil compounds in Arctic seawater at 0 °C

Oil spills in Arctic marine environments are expected to increase concurrently with the expansion of shipping routes and petroleum exploitation into previously inaccessible ice-dominated regions. Most research on oil biodegradation focusses on the bulk oil, but the fate of the water-accommodated fraction (WAF), mainly composed of toxic aromatic compounds, is largely underexplored. To evaluate the bacterial degradation capacity of such dissolved aromatics in Greenlandic seawater, microcosms consisting of 0 °C seawater polluted with WAF were investigated over a 3-month period. With a half-life (t_1/2) of 26 days, m-xylene was the fastest degraded compound, as measured by gas chromatography - mass spectrometry. Substantial slower degradation was observed for ethylbenzene, naphthalenes, phenanthrene, acenaphthylene, acenaphthene and fluorenes with t_1/2 of 40-105 days. Colwellia, identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing, was the main potential degrader of m-xylene. This genus occupied up to 47 % of the bacterial community until day 10 in the microcosms. Cycloclasticus and Zhongshania aliphaticivorans, potentially utilizing one-to three-ringed aromatics, replaced Colwellia between day 10 and 96 and occupied up to 6 % and 23 % of the community, respectively. Although most of the WAF can ultimately be eliminated in microcosms, our results suggest that the restoration of an oil-impacted Arctic environment may be slow as most analysed compounds had t_1/2 of over 2-3 months and the detrimental effects of a spill towards the marine ecosystem likely persist during this time.

Mutual effects of crude oil and plants in contaminated soil: a field study

The effect of oil contamination on growth of mono- and dicotyledonous plants (clover and ryegrass), on the one hand, and the effect of plants on oil biodegradation in soil, on the other hand, were studied in a long-term field experiment. It was found that plants respond differently to oil contamination of soddy-podzolic soil. Clover was more resistant to oil than ryegrass. Biosynthesis of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophylls and carotenoids) was not disturbed in clover, and the plant yield was fully restored by the end of the third growing season. The content of oxidative enzymes in clover leaves was 2-10 times higher than in ryegrass. Biological activity of soil planted with clover was 1.5-2 times higher correlating with the biochemical parameters of plants. Higher basal respiration in soil planted with clover corresponded to the enhanced oil biodegradation. The differences in the carbon of oil products between soils planted with clover and ryegrass appeared at the end of the third growing season at high doses of oil (5 and 10 L m^-2).

The barnacle Chthamalus bisinuatus is the only sessile invertebrate colonizing oil patches on beachrocks one year after a massive oil spill on the Northeastern Brazilian coast

A large-scale oil spill has reached over 3000 km of the NE Brazilian coast since August 2019. The cause and origin of this spill remain mysterious, and the impacts on coastal ecosystems have not been clearly understood so far. Despite the efforts to remove the oil (mainly from local communities), oil stains are still present in beaches, mangroves, and beachrocks. In this short report, we describe the occurrence of the barnacle Chthamalus bisinuatus Pilsbry, 1916 colonizing oil spill stains on intertidal surfaces of beachrocks one year after the first oil records. We quickly assessed oil stains across three different reefs located at the Conde municipality, Bahia (NE Brazil), where the species was identified and its density on oil stains calculated. The occurrence of barnacles in oil stains was restricted to zones in the wake of the reefs. Their densities varied from 0 to 238 ind./dm², with an average of 34 ± 68 ind./dm². If we account for dead individuals (empty barnacle plates), they correspond to 25.9% of the sampled population. The presence of oil possibly affected barnacle survival rates but did not seem to prevent barnacle individuals from reaching adult sizes. We also found individuals of the snail Echinolittorina lineolata (d'Orbigny, 1840) crawling on these barnacles, indicating that the barnacle assemblages on oil stains are stable enough to provide refuge for these snails. It is not clear if the presence of barnacles on oil reflects the resistance of these crustaceans to the oil toxicity or is just a result of a low substrate selectivity by the cypris larvae.

Ecological criteria for assessing the content of petroleum hydrocarbons in the main soils of coniferous-deciduous forests and forest steppe

The effect of pollution of Albicluvisols/Retisols, Calcaric Leptosols, Luvic Phaeozems, Greyzamic Phaeozems and Folic Fluvisols with oil (Solovatovsky oil field, Perm region) added in amounts of 1, 2, 3 and 5 g oil/kg of soil on the organisms was studied in a model laboratory experiment. Oil addition showed phytotoxic effects on root length in Triticum aestivum L., Lepidium sativum L., Picea obovata Ledeb. and Pinus sylvestris L. in all soils. However, oil contamination of Calcaric Leptosols and Greyzamic Phaeozems led to growth stimulation in Picea obovata seedlings. A remarkable shift in the diversity and number of colony-forming units of heterotrophic and oil-oxidizing bacteria was detected in all soil types. The maximum decrease in biodiversity (45%) was noted for heterotrophic bacteria in Luvic Phaeozems. Aqueous extracts from all oil-contaminated soils had a toxic effect on Chlorella vulgaris Beijer, causing an increase in biomass by more than 30%, but did not show acute toxicity on Daphnia magna Straus. Oil addition in the range of 1-3 g oil/kg soil posed no environmental risk to human health. However, oil addition at 5 g oil/kg of soil led to an increase in the level of carcinogenic risk to children to the threshold values of acceptable risk and ranged from 0.95 × 10^-4 for Greyzamic Phaeozems and Folic Fluvisols to 1.098 × 10^-4 for Luvic Phaeozems. Our results suggest that the reaction of test organisms to oil pollution depends on the soil type, and their complex application makes it possible to identify the most sensitive factor and assess the dangerous level of pollution.

Oil contamination drives the transformation of soil microbial communities: Co-occurrence pattern, metabolic enzymes and culturable hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria

The land-based oil extraction activity has led to serious pollution of the soil. While microbes may play an important role in the remediation of contaminated soils, ecological effects of oil pollution on soil microbial relationships remain poorly understood. Here, typical contaminated soils and undisturbed soils from seven oilfields of China were investigated in terms of their physicochemical characteristics, indigenous microbial assemblages, bacterial co-occurrence patterns, and metabolic enzymes. Network visualization based on k-core decomposition illustrated that oil pollution reduced correlations between co-existing bacteria. The core genera were altered to those related with oil metabolism (Pseudarthrobacter, Alcanivorax, Sphingomonas, Chromohalobacter and Nocardioides). Under oil pollution pressure, the indigenous bacteria Gammaproteobacteria was domesticated as biomarker and the enzyme expression associated with the metabolism of toxic benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was enhanced. Functional pathways of xenobiotics biodegradation were also stimulated under oil contamination. Finally, twelve culturable hydrocarbon-degrading microbes were isolated from these polluted soils and classified into Stenotrophomonas, Delftia, Pseudomonas and Bacillus. These results show that the soil microbial communities are transformed under oil pollution stress, and also provide useful information for future bioremediation processes.

Monitoring offshore oil pollution using multi-class convolutional neural networks

Oil and gas production operations are a major source of environmental pollution that expose people and habitats in many coastal communities around the world to adverse health effects. Detecting oil spills in a timely and precise manner can help improve the oil spill response process and channel required resources more effectively to affected regions. In this research, convolutional neural networks, a branch of artificial intelligence (AI), are trained on a visual dataset of oil spills containing images from different altitudes and geographical locations. In particular, a VGG16 model is adopted through transfer learning for oil spill classification (i.e., detecting if there is oil spill in an image) with an accuracy of 92%. Next, Mask R-CNN and PSPNet models are used for oil spill segmentation (i.e., pixel-level detection of oil spill boundaries) with a mean intersection over union (IoU) of 49% and 68%, respectively. Lastly, to determine if there is an oil rig or vessel in the vicinity of a detected oil spill and provide a holistic view of the oil spill surroundings, a YOLOv3 model is trained and used, yielding a maximum mean average precision (mAP) of ~71%. Findings of this research can improve the current practices of oil pollution cleanup and predictive maintenance, ultimately leading to more resilient and healthy coastal communities.

Biodegradation of weathered crude oil by microbial communities in solid and melted sea ice

Oil spilled in the Arctic may drift into ice-covered areas and become trapped until the ice melts. To determine if exposure to oil during freezing may have a priming effect on degradation of the oil, weathered dispersed oil (2-3 mg/L) was frozen into solid ice for 200 days at -10 °C, then melted and incubated for 64 days at 4 °C. No degradation was measured in oil frozen into ice prior to melting. Both total amount of oil and target compounds were biotransformed by the microbial community from the melted ice. However, oil released from melted ice was degraded at a slower rate than oil incubated in fresh seawater at the same temperature (4 °C), and by a different microbial community. These data suggest negligible biodegradation of oil frozen in sea ice, while oil-degrading bacteria surviving in the ice may contribute to biodegradation when the ice melts.

Trace metal content in annually banded scleractinian coral 'Porites lobata' across the northern Persian Gulf

Concentrations of trace metals in skeleton growth bands of dominant scleractinian coral 'Porites lobata' in different years were investigated in Kharg and Hebourabi islands in the northern coast of the Persian Gulf. The highest average concentrations of metals respectively were Sr> Mg> Zn> Ba> Cu> U> Ni> Mn> Cr> Co> Pb> V> Cd in Kharg and Sr> Mg> Ba> Cu> U> Ni> Zn> Mn> Cr> Co> V> Pb> Cd in Hendourabi. The coefficient of variation percentages (CV%) of Cr, Mn, Zn, Ba, and Pb in Kharg and Cu and Ba in Hendourabi were more than 50%. Results of PCA analyses revealed that the levels of trace metals in Kharg were defined by three principle components: the first component (Mn, V, Pb, Zn, Ni and half of Mg, Cr and Co) corresponding to the past regional military conflicts and oil pollution, the second component (Sr, U, and Mg) corresponding to sea surface temperature (SST) changes, and the third component (Cr and Co) corresponding to other factors. The results of PCA analyses revealed that trace metals in Hendourabi were defined by two principle components including the first component (Co, Ni, Cr, Mn, and half of Ba) corresponding to annual precipitation changes and the second component (U, Zn, and Ba) corresponding to coastal constructions. The results showed that trace metal contamination in Kharg is higher than those of Hendourabi as a result of the oil exploration-related activities and war.

Comparison of 2- and 3-compartment electrodialytic remediation cells for oil polluted soil from northwest Russia

Electrodialytic remediation is a method based on electrokinetics, in which an electric field of low intensity increases the availability of pollutants in solid waste materials. The electric field induces processes that mobilise and transport inorganic and organic pollutants. The transport of ions in the electrodialytic cell is controlled by employing ion-exchange membranes, allowing separation of the electrodes from the solids. In this study, using a two cell design, electrodialytic experiments were conducted to compare remediation of a heavily oil-polluted soil from Arkhangelsk, Russia. The 2-compartment cell has not previously been employed for electrodialytic removal of organic pollutants and was tested along with the traditional 3-compartment design. The influence of experimental variables (current density, remediation time, stirring and light) and settings on the two cell designs was investigated. The highest removal (77%) of total hydrocarbons (THC) was observed in the 3-compartment cell at high current density (0.68 mA/cm²), longer remediation time (28 days), stirring and exposure to daylight. High current density and stirring increased the removal efficiencies in both cell designs. Within the studied experimental domain, the removal efficiencies in the 3-compartment cell (10-77%) were, however, higher than those observed in the 2-compartment cell (0-38%).

Biodiversity and oil degradation capacity of oil-degrading bacteria isolated from deep-sea hydrothermal sediments of the South Mid-Atlantic Ridge

Studies have reported that various hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria are found in global deep-sea hydrothermal regions. However, little is known about degradation characteristics of culturable hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria from these regions. We speculate that these bacteria can be used as resources for the bioremediation of oil pollution. In this study, six oil-degrading consortia were obtained from the hydrothermal region of the Southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge through room-temperature enrichment experiments. The dominant oil-degrading bacteria belonged to Nitratireductor, Pseudonocardia, Brevundimonas and Acinetobacter. More varieties of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria were obtained from sediments (preserved at 4 °C) near hydrothermal vents. Most strains had the ability to degrade high molecular weight petroleum components. In addition, Pseudonocardia was shown to exhibit a high degradation ability for phytane and pristine for the first time. This study may provide new insights into the community structure and biodiversity of culturable oil-degrading bacteria in deep-sea hydrothermal regions.

Estuarine oiling increases a long-term decline in mussel growth

The ribbed mussel, Geukensia granosissima, cycles nutrients, contributes to soil stability, and can be a major component of predator-prey communities in salt marshes. Mussels were exposed to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and salt marshes remain contaminated eight years later. We hypothesized that the oiled mussels had reduced annual growth, altered population size frequency, and perhaps changed valve morphometrics. We sampled 10 marshes near Port Sulphur, LA, to measure the morphometrics of 133 mussels and their age-specific growth rate, and also the marsh oil content and percent vegetative cover. The relationships between valve weight, length and biomass weight were stable as mussels aged. A Year 1 growth decline from 1994 to 2018 is not easily explained by estuarine acidification, flooding, and temperature rise; freshening of estuarine waters is suggested to be a probable causal factor in the declining growth rate. The average valve length and dry biomass per valve declined with oiling in 2010. A multiple regression equation using the percent cover and oil concentration in 2018 described 70% of the variation in valve length. Sites with the highest oiling had few mussels with 14 annual growth bands and more of the younger mussels compared to sites with the lowest oiling. Valve growth in Year 1 declined for four years after the oil spill and was not compensated by higher growth rates in older mussels. Annual growth was below the amount predicted in a regression equation for the five years after the oil spill. Mussel populations may also have been structured by predators that were also responsive to oiling in subtle ways.

Modelling of possible tanker accident oil spills in the Istanbul Strait in order to demonstrate the dispersion and toxic effects of oil pollution

Countries located on the Black Sea coast perform most of their sea trade through the Istanbul Strait (IS). Approximately 50,000 ships pass through the IS each year, with crude oil tankers making up the majority. Thus, the aim of the study is to determine the acute toxic effect of oil pollution that may occur as a result of crude oil tanker accidents in the IS. By utilising data related to accidents that have occurred in the IS, locations of concentrated tanker accidents, or "hot spots," were determined by Kernel Density Analysis. Subsequently, the distribution of potential leaks following an oil tanker accident, within these hot spots, is modelled with GNOME software. Finally, acute toxicity caused by oil pollution in the marine ecosystem is determined by Aliivibrio fischeri luminescent bacteria toxicity test. In this research, 5 hot spots are identified, where the maximum calculated amount of oil that can reach the coastline after 72 h is 3096 metric tons. Similarly, oil pollution can affect a total coastline of 30-35 km. Furthermore, it was determined that after the oil was diluted in seawater, at a ratio of 1:200,000, the toxic effects decrease (EC₅₀ above 100 mg/L), yet the chronic effects may still continue. The results of this study may serve as a reference for coastal state authorities to develop emergency response plans. Having this valuable knowledge of where high-risk accidents are most concentrated, where the accidents occur intensely, which areas can be affected by the pollution, the duration of the pollution effects, and the distance between the areas, will help determine the number of intervention stations to be installed, their locations, and equipment to be installed to the stations.

Investigating the potential of bioremediation in aged oil-polluted hypersaline soils in the south oilfields of Iran

To date, studies for bioremediation of oil-polluted hypersaline soils have been neglected or limited to specific spots. Hence, in this study, ten samples of oil field soils in the Khuzestan province of Iran were collected to evaluate bioremediation's feasibility. These samples were analyzed for their physicochemical properties as well as the most probable number of total and hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria. Thirty-nine hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria were isolated from these soils over a 1-month incubation in an MSM medium enriched with diesel oil as the sole source of carbon. As revealed by 16S-rRNA analysis, the identified strains belonged to the genera Ochrobactrum, Microbacterium, and Bacillus with a high frequency of Ochrobactrum species. Additionally, by using degenerate primers, the third group of alkB gene was detected in Ochrobactrum and Microbacterium isolates through the touchdown nested PCR method for the first time. Ochrobactrum species possessing the alkB gene showed the highest population, and therefore, the highest adaptation to harsh environmental conditions. Most isolates showed outstanding results in the ability to grow with crude and diesel oil and tolerate high salt percentages, biosurfactant production, and emulsification activity, which are considered the most effective factors in bioremediation of such environments. Considering the soil analysis, limiting factors in bioremediation like available phosphorous, and the abundance of bacteria with remediation traits in these soils, these extremely polluted environments can be refined.

Preparation, optimization and reusability of immobilized petroleum-degrading bacteria

In the remediation of marine pollution, it is important to effectively degrade pollutants and reuse petroleum-degrading bacteria. In order to obtain more effective biodegradability and reusability, an immobilized bacteria combination with petroleum-degrading bacteria, sodium alginate (SA) and biochar by adsorption-embedding method was systematically analysed. The results indicated that the immobilized bacteria had good mechanical properties and the degradation rate was 51% when the straw (CS) was 3%, the SA and CaCl₂ were 4.5% and 6%, respectively. Besides, SA-CS-DM-PVA has the highest degradation rate and the lowest broken rate, above 51% and below 6.1% respectively. The optimum dosage of the modified immobilized bacteria was 132, degradation time was 5d, and reuse frequency was 4 times. Moreover, immobilized bacteria characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), results showed that there were more pores on the surface after degradation, and the carrier was exposed. Therefore, the modified immobilized bacteria with good degradability and reusability, have good application prospects in the treatment of marine oil pollution.

Oil spills: The invisible impact on the base of tropical marine food webs

The Brazilian oil spill, from August 2019 to January 2020, was considered the most extensive accident in tropical oceans. We estimated the concentration of oil droplets that may be available for ingestion by microzooplankton. The collection was carried out in three areas: estuarine plume, bay and reef (Tamandaré, Pernambuco coast). We highlight the contribution of coral larvae in the reef region, surpassing the copepods, evidencing a spawning event. Oil droplets were recorded in all the sampled areas, with a high numerical abundance in the plume. Traces of oil ingestion by Brachyura zoea and Calanoida, Paracalanidae and Oithonidae copepods were observed, suggesting that these groups might have an important role in the degradation and final destination of oil dispersed after spills. The vulnerability of the larval phases of crabs and reef-building corals has been hypothesized, suggesting that the negative effects of oil on zooplankton can affect the recruitment of benthic invertebrates.

Bioaugmentation: possible scenarios due to application of bacterial preparations for remediation of oil-contaminated soil

Although bioaugmentation is known as effective and environmentally friendly method increasing removal of hydrocarbons from oil-contaminated soil, it sometimes fails in soil restoration and disturbs the ecological state of soil. We studied possible scenarios of the introduction of oil-degrading bacteria into oil-contaminated podzolic soil assessing the environmental safety of different bacterial preparations in a long-term field experiment. Integral indicators characterizing the state of biocenosis included biological activity of soil and aboveground biomass of grasses. It has been established that bacterial preparations can have both positive and negative effects on the ecological state of soil and oil biodegradation. Of the five bacterial preparations studied, one had a pronounced positive effect on soil biological activity and oil mineralization processes. Two preparations did not accelerate oil biodegradation and were characterized by a weaker positive effect or even a lack of influence. Two more bacterial preparations had a significant negative impact on soil biological properties. These preparations slowed oil mineralization in soil. Both positive and negative effects of bacterial preparations were observed only during the first two years after their application. All preparations were not effective during the latter stages of long-term remediation processes. The results indicate that successful application of bioaugmentation for the restoration of oil-contaminated soil requires testing of environmental safety of bacterial preparations in a long-term field experiments prior to any treatment processes.

Spatial and temporal assessment of oil spills in the Mediterranean Sea

Ship-generated oil pollution is a significant threat to the Mediterranean Sea. We present a geostatistical analysis of oil spills using three databases for the Mediterranean Sea: REMPEC (1977-2000) with 385 spills (17/year), ITOPF (1970-2018) with 167 spills (3.5/year) and EMSA (2015-2017) with 2066 detections (688/year). It was found that 88% of spills reported by REMPEC occurred near coastline areas, while 65% of the spills detected by EMSA occurred within a range of 22-100 km from the coastline. At the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) level, EMSA oil spills densities were positively correlated with shipping and port activity. We conclude that there is a need to develop an open-access database of oil spills that will be based on both reports and remote sensing acquisition methods. Such a database will facilitate more efficient enforcement of international conventions in offshore areas and will increase the likelihood of effective response.

Monitoring of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, hopanes, and polychlorinated biphenyls in the Persian Gulf in plastic resin pellets

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and hopanes were analyzed in plastic resin pellets collected from 19 locations along the Persian Gulf coastline. PCBs were high at locations near industrial areas, where their concentrations (sum of 13 congeners, 54-624 ng/g-pellet) were higher than those in rural coastal towns, which were close to global background levels (<10 ng/g-pellet). PAH concentrations (sum of 27 PAH species) varied from 273 to 15,786 ng/g-pellet and were highest in industrial cities (Bushehr and Bandar Abbas), with a petrogenic signature at most locations, possibly due to the petroleum-based industries, refineries, and tankers. These levels were placed in the extremely polluted category on a global basis. The distribution of hopanes was relatively homogeneous, and their range of concentrations was 8048-59,778 ng/g-pellet. This range had a positive correlation with PAH concentrations. The PAH and hopane results emphasize the ubiquity of petroleum pollution in the Persian Gulf.

Ticking ecological time bombs: Risk characterisation and management of oil polluting World War II shipwrecks in the Pacific Ocean

The Second World War in the Pacific has left a legacy of over 3800 wrecks on the ocean floor. These wrecks contain thousands of tons of oil and pose a risk to the marine environment. Estimates of current corrosion rates show many wrecks are at risk of structural collapse. However, the scale of threat posed by potentially polluting wrecks (PPW) to coastal ecosystems in the Pacific is largely unknown, due to the lack of data to inform risk. This paper presents a strategy aimed to prioritise, manage, and mitigate negative effects of oil spills posed by PPW in the Pacific, using an example in Chuuk Lagoon. Wrecks are assessed and prioritised by means of risk characterisation. Wrecks are surveyed using photogrammetry to assess hull integrity. Finally, recommendations are made for the production of bespoke management plans and risk reduction strategies that work towards safeguarding marine ecosystems and the livelihoods of coastal communities.

Climate change and oil pollution: A dangerous cocktail for tropical zooplankton

Climate change and oil pollution pose a major threat to tropical marine ecosystems and to the coastal communities relying on their resources. The Gulf of Guinea is severely affected by multiple human induced stressors, but the potential impacts of these on marine productivity remain unknown. We investigated the combined effects of heatwaves (climate stressor) and the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pyrene (proxy for oil) on the copepod Centropages velificatus. We quantified survival, reproduction and fecal pellet production of females exposed to concentrations of 0, 10, 100 and 100+ nM (saturated) pyrene under simulated heatwaves of different thermal intensity (+3 °C and +5 °C above control treatment temperature). Thermal stress due to both moderate and intensive heatwaves resulted in reduced survival and egg production. The negative effects of pyrene were only measurable at the high pyrene concentrations. However, thermal stress increased the sensitivity of C. velificatus to pyrene, indicating a synergistic interaction between the two stressors. We document that the interaction of multiple stressors can result in cumulative impacts that are stronger than expected based on single stressor studies. Further research is urgently needed to evaluate the combined impact of climatic and anthropogenic stressors on the productivity of coastal ecosystems, particularly in the tropical areas.
