Sevelamer reverses liver fibrosis by deactivation of hepatic stellate cells

Liver fibrosis is a chronic liver disease characterized by a progressive wound healing response caused by chronic liver injury. Currently, there are no approved clinical treatments for liver fibrosis. Sevelamer is used clinically to treat hyperphosphatemia and has shown potential therapeutic effects on liver diseases. However, there have been few studies evaluating the therapeutic effects of sevelamer on liver fibrosis, and the specific mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, we investigated the antifibrotic effects of sevelamer-induced low inorganic phosphate (Pi) stress in vitro and in vivo and analyzed the detailed mechanisms. We found that low Pi stress could inhibit the proliferation of activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) by promoting apoptosis, effectively suppressing the migration and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of hepatic stellate cells. Additionally, low Pi stress significantly increased the antioxidant stress response. It is worth noting that low Pi stress indirectly inhibited the activation and migration of HSCs by suppressing transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) expression in macrophages. In a rat model of liver fibrosis, oral administration of sevelamer significantly decreased blood phosphorus levels, improved liver function, reduced liver inflammation, and increased the antioxidant stress response in the liver. Our study revealed that the key mechanism by which sevelamer inhibited liver fibrosis involved binding to gastrointestinal phosphate, resulting in a decrease in blood phosphorus levels, the downregulation of TGF-β expression in macrophages, and the inhibition of HSC migration and fibrosis-related protein expression. Therefore, our results suggest that sevelamer-induced low Pi stress can attenuate hepatic stellate cell activation and inhibit the progression of liver fibrosis, making it a potential option for the treatment of liver fibrosis and other refractory chronic liver diseases.

Cyanobacterial blooms control with CaO2 in different stages: Inhibition efficiency, water quality optimization and microbial community changes

This study explored the feasibility of calcium peroxide (CaO2) to inhibit cyanobacterial blooms of the outbreak and dormancy stages. Our previous studies have found that CaO2 has a high inhibitory effect on cyanobacteria. In order to explore the application effect of CaO2 in actual cyanobacteria lake water, we conducted this study to clarify the effect of CaO2 on inhibiting cyanobacteria in outbreak and dormancy stages. The results showed that CaO2 inhibited the growth of cyanobacteria in the outbreak and dormancy stages by 98.7% and 97.6%, respectively. The main inhibitory mechanism is: (1) destroy the cell structure and make the cells undergo programmed cell death by stimulating the oxidation balance of cyanobacteria cells; (2) EPS released by cyanobacteria resist stimulation and combine calcium to form colonies, and accelerate cell settlement. In addition to causing direct damage to cyanobacteria, CaO2 can also improve water quality and sediment microbial diversity, and reduce the release of sediment to phosphorus, so as to further contribute to cyanobacterial inhibition. Finally, the results of qRT-PCR analysis confirmed the promoting effect of CaO2 on the downregulation of photosynthesis-related genes (rbcL and psaB), microcystn (mcyA and mcyD) and peroxiredoxin (prx), and verified the mechanism of CaO2 inhibition of cyanobacteria. In conclusion, this study provides new findings for the future suppression of cyanobacterial bloom, by combining water quality, cyanobacterial inhibition mechanisms, and sediment microbial diversity.

Effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis on growth and biochemical characteristics of Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) seedlings under low phosphorus environment

Background

The continuous establishment of Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) plantations across multiple generations has led to the limited impact of soil phosphorus (P) on tree growth. This challenge poses a significant obstacle in maintaining the sustainable management of Chinese fir.

Methods

To investigate the effects of Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on the growth and physiological characteristics of Chinese fir under different P supply treatments. We conducted an indoor pot simulation experiment in the greenhouse of the Forestry College of Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University with one-and-half-year-old seedlings of Chinese fir from March 2019 to June 2019, with the two P level treatment groups included a normal P supply treatment (1.0 mmol L-1 KH2PO4, P1) and a no P supply treatment (0 mmol L-1 KH2PO4, P0). P0 and P1 were inoculated with Funneliformis mosseae (F.m) or Rhizophagus intraradices (R.i) or not inoculated with AMF treatment. The AMF colonization rate in the root system, seedling height (SH), root collar diameter (RCD) growth, chlorophyll (Chl) photosynthetic characteristics, enzyme activities, and endogenous hormone contents of Chinese fir were estimated.

Results

The results showed that the colonization rate of F.m in the roots of Chinese fir seedlings was the highest at P0, up to 85.14%, which was 1.66 times that of P1. Under P0 and P1 treatment, root inoculation with either F.m or R.i promoted SH growth, the SH of R.i treatment was 1.38 times and 1.05 times that of F.m treatment, respectively. In the P1 treatment, root inoculation with either F.m or R.i inhibited RCD growth. R.i inhibited RCD growth more aggressively than F.m. In the P0 treatment, root inoculation with F.m and R.i reduced the inhibitory effect of phosphorus deficiency on RCD. At this time, there was no significant difference in RCD between F.m, R.i and CK treatments (p < 0.05). AMF inoculation increased Fm, Fv, Fv/Fm, and Fv/Fo during the chlorophyll fluorescence response in the tested Chinese fir seedlings. Under the two phosphorus supply levels, the trend of Fv and Fm of Chinese fir seedlings in different treatment groups was F.m > R.i > CK. Under P0 treatment, The values of Fv were 235.86, 221.86 and 147.71, respectively. The values of Fm were 287.57, 275.71 and 201.57, respectively. It increased the antioxidant enzyme activity and reduced the leaf's malondialdehyde (MDA) content to a certain extent.

Conclusion

It is concluded that AMF can enhance the photosynthetic capacity of the host, regulate the distribution of endogenous hormones in plants, and promote plant growth by increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes. When the P supply is insufficient, AMF is more helpful to plants, and R.i is more effective than F.m in alleviating P starvation stress in Chinese fir.

Effects of Setaria viridis on heavy metal enrichment tolerance and bacterial community establishment in high-sulfur coal gangue

Plant enrichment and tolerance to heavy metals are crucial for the phytoremediation of coal gangue mountain. However, understanding of how plants mobilize and tolerate heavy metals in coal gangue is limited. This study conducted potted experiments using Setaria viridis as a pioneer remediation plant to evaluate its tolerance to coal gangue, its mobilization and enrichment of metals, and its impact on the soil environment. Results showed that the addition of 40% gangue enhanced plant metal and oxidative stress resistance, thereby promoting plant growth. However, over 80% of the gangue inhibited the chlorophyll content, photoelectron conduction rate, and biomass of S. viridis, leading to cellular peroxidative stress. An analysis of metal resistance showed that endogenous S in coal gangue promoted the accumulation of glutathione, plant metal chelators, and non-protein thiols, thereby enhancing its resistance to metal stress. Setaria viridis cultivation affected soil properties by decreasing nitrogen, phosphorus, conductivity, and urease and increasing sucrase and acid phosphatase in the rhizosphere soil. In addition, S. viridis planting increased V, Cr, Ni, As, and Zn in the exchangeable and carbonate-bound states within the gangue, effectively enriching Cd, Cr, Fe, S, U, Cu, and V. The increased mobility of Cd and Pb was correlated with a higher abundance of Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria. Heavy metals, such as As, Fe, V, Mn, Ni, and Cu, along with environmental factors, including total nitrogen, total phosphorus, urease, and acid phosphatase, were the primary regulatory factors for Sphingomonas, Gemmatimonas, and Bryobacter. In summary, S. viridis adapted to gangue stress by modulating antioxidant and elemental enrichment systems and regulating the release and uptake of heavy metals through enhanced bacterial abundance and the recruitment of gangue-tolerant bacteria. These findings highlight the potential of S. viridis for plant enrichment in coal gangue areas and will aid the restoration and remediation of these environments.

Macrophage membrane (MMs) camouflaged near-infrared (NIR) responsive bone defect area targeting nanocarrier delivery system (BTNDS) for rapid repair: promoting osteogenesis via phototherapy and modulating immunity

Bone defects remain a significant challenge in clinical orthopedics, but no targeted medication can solve these problems. Inspired by inflammatory targeting properties of macrophages, inflammatory microenvironment of bone defects was exploited to develop a multifunctional nanocarrier capable of targeting bone defects and promoting bone regeneration. The avidin-modified black phosphorus nanosheets (BP-Avidin, BPAvi) were combined with biotin-modified Icaritin (ICT-Biotin, ICTBio) to synthesize Icaritin (ICT)-loaded black phosphorus nanosheets (BPICT). BPICT was then coated with macrophage membranes (MMs) to obtain MMs-camouflaged BPICT (M@BPICT). Herein, MMs allowed BPICT to target bone defects area, and BPICT accelerated the release of phosphate ions (PO43-) and ICT when exposed to NIR irradiation. PO43- recruited calcium ions (Ca2+) from the microenvironment to produce Ca3(PO4)2, and ICT increased the expression of osteogenesis-related proteins. Additionally, M@BPICT can decrease M1 polarization of macrophage and expression of pro-inflammatory factors to promote osteogenesis. According to the results, M@BPICT provided bone growth factor and bone repair material, modulated inflammatory microenvironment, and activated osteogenesis-related signaling pathways to promote bone regeneration. PTT could significantly enhance these effects. This strategy not only offers a solution to the challenging problem of drug-targeted delivery in bone defects but also expands the biomedical applications of MMs-camouflaged nanocarriers.

Uptake and cellular responses of Microcystis aeruginosa to PFOS in various environmental conditions

Although PFOS has been banned as a persistent organic pollutant, it still exists in large quantities within the environment, thus impacting the health of aquatic ecosystems. Previous studies focused solely on high PFOS concentrations, disregarding the connection with environmental factors. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of the PFOS effects on aquatic ecosystems amidst changing environmental conditions, this study investigated the cellular responses of Microcystis aeruginosa to varying PFOS concentrations under heatwave and nutrient stress conditions. The results showed that PFOS concentrations exceeding 5.0 µg/L had obvious effects on multiple physiological responses of M. aeruginosa, resulting in the suppression of algal cell growth and the induction of oxidative damage. However, PFOS concentration at levels below 20.0 µg/L has been found to enhance the growth of algal cells and trigger significant oxidative damage under heatwave conditions. Heatwave conditions could enhance the uptake of PFOS in algal cells, potentially leading to heightened algal growth when PFOS concentration was equal to or less than 5.0 µg/L. Conversely, deficiency or limitation of nitrogen and phosphorus significantly decreased algal abundance and chlorophyll content, inducing severe oxidative stress that could be mitigated by exposure to PFOS. This study holds significance in managing the impact of PFOS on algal growth across diverse environmental conditions.

Phosphorus forms and zinc concentrations affect the physiological ecology and sinking rate of Thalassiosira weissflogii

The combined effects of phosphorus (P) forms and zinc (Zn) concentrations on diatom silicification remain unclear. In this study, we investigate the effects of different Zn concentrations on the growth, cellular silicon content and sinking rate of Thalassiosira weissflogii under different P forms. The results showed that under the dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) treatments, the specific growth rate of T. weissflogii in Zn limitation culture was significantly lower than that in Zn-replete culture. However, T. weissflogii cellular silicon content and sinking rate increased. Moreover, the reduced specific growth rate (7 %, p < 0.05), enhanced ALP activity (63 %, p < 0.05), and sinking rate (20 %, p < 0.05) for Zn-deplete T. weissflogii implied that the bioavailability of dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) was depressed under Zn deplete medium. This study demonstrates that the physiological ecology and sinking rate of the diatom T. weissflogii were affected by both individual and combined changes in P forms and Zn concentrations.

Colonial Microcystis' biomass affects its shift to diatom aggregates under aeration mixing

The effect of hydrodynamic mixing on controlling Microcystis blooms or changing the algal community to diatom dominance has been widely studied; however, the effects of colonial Microcystis biomass on the development of the algal community are poorly known. Here, in order to study the changes in Microcystis blooms under continuous aeration mixing, an experiment was carried out in a greenhouse with factors of varying biomass of Microcystis and inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus enrichment in summer. There were three chlorophyll a (Chl-a) levels in six treatments: low Chl-a level of 68.4 μg L-1 (treatments L, L-E), medium Chl-a level of 468.7 μg L-1 (treatments M, M-E), and high Chl-a level of 924.1 μg L-1 (treatments H, H-E). Treatments L-E, M-E and H-E were enriched with the same inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients. During the experiment of 30 days, the concentration of Microcystis and Chl-a decreased, and diatom Nitzschia palea cells appeared in all the treatments, which became dominant in treatments M, M-E, H and H-E, with the highest biomass of 9.41 ± 1.96 mg L-1 Nitzschia in treatment H-E on day 30. The rank order of the biomass of Nitzschia from low to high was (L = L-E) < (M = M-E) < H < H-E (P < 0.05). In addition, Nitzschia cells were aggregates attached to Microcystis colonies in all the treatments. The results showed that the initial biomass of colonial Microcystis affected the algal shift from Microcystis dominance to Nitzschia dominance. However, the enriched inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus was beneficial for the Nitzschia increase in the high biomass treatment alone. The shift from Microcystis dominance to diatom dominance under continuous aeration mixing may be caused by low light conditions as well as the nutrients released from Microcystis decay. Moreover, the aerobic condition caused by aeration mixing maintained the colonial mucilaginous sheath to support the growth of Nitzschia cells in aggregation. This study found for the first time that Microcystis blooms could shift to diatom Nitzschia dominance in aggregates. It provided a method to control and manipulate Microcystis blooms to diatom dominance through continuous aeration mixing to proper biomass of Microcystis colonies. The shift to diatoms dominance would provide more high quality food organisms for aquaculture and be beneficial to the material cycling and energy flowing in food web dynamics.

Phytic Acid-Promoted Exfoliation of Black Phosphorus Nanosheets for the Fabrication of Photothermal Antibacterial Coatings

Medical device-associated infections (MDAI) caused by planktonic pathogens are of serious concern worldwide due to the emergence of drug resistance resulting from continuous overuse or misuse of antibiotics. Therefore, the design of non-antibiotics-based treatment for MDAI is of crucial importance. Black phosphorus (BP), a novel 2D material, has recently received much attention owing to its remarkable physical, chemical, mechanical, and functional features. However, the intricacy of the fabrication process has severely hampered the development of BP in prospective applications. In this study, a simple and eco-friendly liquid-phase exfoliation method of phytic acid (PA)-promoted exfoliation of BP nanosheets (PA@BP NSs) is developed for their potential application in antibacterial photothermal therapy. To impart the antimicrobial effects, the polydimethylsiloxane surfaces are functionalized with quaternized polymer (polyquaternium-2 or PQ) and PA@BP NSs, leading to the formation of PA-BP-PQ composite coatings. In addition to the contact-killing antibacterial effect of the cationic PQ, the PA-BP-PQ coating exhibits remarkable near-infrared irradiation-triggered bactericidal effects with low cytotoxicity both in vitro and in vivo. This study proposes a simple liquid-phase exfoliation technique for the fabrication of BP NSs and a one-step approach for the construction of PA-BP-PQ composite coatings for bi-modal (contact-killing and photothermal) antimicrobial therapy.

Impact of macronutrients and salinity stress on biomass and biochemical constituents in Monoraphidium braunii to enhance biodiesel production

Microalgal lipids are precursors to the production of biodiesel, as well as a source of valuable dietary components in the biotechnological industries. So, this study aimed to assess the effects of nutritional (nitrogen, and phosphorus) starvations and salinity stress (NaCl) on the biomass, lipid content, fatty acids profile, and predicted biodiesel properties of green microalga Monoraphidium braunii. The results showed that biomass, biomass productivity, and photosynthetic pigment contents (Chl. a, b, and carotenoids) of M. braunii were markedly decreased by nitrogen and phosphorus depletion and recorded the maximum values in cultures treated with full of N and P concentrations (control, 100%). These parameters were considerably increased at the low salinity level (up to 150 mM NaCl), while an increasing salinity level (up to 250 mM NaCl) reduces the biomass, its productivity, and pigment contents. Nutritional limitations and salt stress (NaCl) resulted in significantly enhanced accumulation of lipid and productivity of M. braunii, which represented more than twofold of the control. Furthermore, these conditions have enhanced the profile of fatty acid and biodiesel quality-related parameters. The current study exposed strategies to improve M. braunii lipid productivity for biodiesel production on a small scale in vitro in terms of fuel quality under low nutrients and salinity stress.

Two-Dimensional Biodegradable Black Phosphorus Nanosheets Promote Large Full-Thickness Wound Healing through In Situ Regeneration Therapy

Large full-thickness skin lesions have been one of the most challenging clinical problems in plastic surgery repair and reconstruction. To achieve in situ skin regeneration and perfect clinical outcomes, we must address two significant obstacles: angiogenesis deficiency and inflammatory dysfunction. Recently, black phosphorus has shown great promise in wound healing. However, few studies have explored the bio-effects of BP to promote in situ skin regeneration based on its nanoproperties. Here, to investigate whether black phosphorus nanosheets have positive bio-effects on in situ skin repair, we verified black phosphorus nanosheets' positive effects on angiogenic and anti-inflammatory abilities in vitro. Next, the in vivo evaluation performed on the rat large full-thickness excisional wound splinting model more comprehensively showed that the positive bio-effects of black phosphorus nanosheets are multilevel in wound healing, which can effectively enhance anti-inflammatory ability, angiogenesis, collagen deposition, and skin re-epithelialization. Then, multiomics analysis was performed to explore further the mechanism of black phosphorus nanosheets' regulation of endothelial cells in depth. Molecular mechanistically, black phosphorus nanosheets activated the JAK-STAT-OAS signaling pathway to promote cellular function and mitochondrial energy metabolism in endothelial cells. This study can provide a theoretical basis for applying two-dimensional black phosphorus nanosheets as nanomedicine to achieve in situ tissue regeneration in complex human pathological microenvironments, guiding the subsequent optimization of black phosphorus.

Markers of resistance to pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris in Pisum sativum L. accessions

One of the major insect pests in Pisum sativum L. (is Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris (Hemiptera: pests in Pisum sativum L. (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris (Hemiptera: Aphididae). An effective strategy for aphid control is the resistant host plant use. The current study aimed to identify resistance mechanisms and assess biochemical and morphological markers of pea aphid resistance in pea accessions. Meteorological variables affected the pea aphid density, which positively correlated with temperature, while precipitation amount and humidity negatively impacted. The aphid number was significantly and positively associated with the leaf area and the nitrogen content but negatively correlated with calcium and phosphorus levels. The pea aphid-resistant cultivars L 123-7-11, L 128-1and L 125-5 had small leaf areas, and high phosphorus and calcium content but a low nitrogen level. In the mutual influence of the plant indicators, phosphorus concentration had the highest negative impact on pea aphid density, followed by calcium. The plant marker inclusion in the pea breeding process is an efficient tool for a substantial selection program improvement for aphid resistance. Therefore, resistant host plants are essential tools promoting considerable selection program improvement for aphid resistance in the P. sativum breeding process and helping develop sustainable and environmentally friendly agriculture.

Harvesting phosphorus-containing moieties for their antibacterial effects

Clinically manifested resistance of bacteria to antibiotics has emerged as a global threat to society and there is an urgent need for the development of novel classes of antibacterial agents. Recently, the use of phosphorus in antibacterial agents has been explored in quite an unprecedent manner. In this comprehensive review, we summarize the use of phosphorus-containing moieties (phosphonates, phosphonamidates, phosphonopeptides, phosphates, phosphoramidates, phosphinates, phosphine oxides, and phosphoniums) in compounds with antibacterial effect, including their use as β-lactamase inhibitors and antibacterial disinfectants. We show that phosphorus-containing moieties can serve as novel pharmacophores, bioisosteres, and prodrugs to modify pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties. We further discuss the mechanisms of action, biological activities, clinical use and highlight possible future prospects.

Ecotoxicity of Lead to a Phytoplankton Community: Effects of pH and Phosphorus Addition and Implications for Risk Assessment

Ecological risk assessment and water quality criteria for lead (Pb) are increasingly making use of bioavailability-based approaches to account for the impact of toxicity-modifying factors, such as pH and dissolved organic carbon. For phytoplankton, which are among the most Pb-sensitive freshwater species, a Pb bioavailability model has previously been developed based on standard single-species exposures at a high phosphorus (P) concentration and pH range of 6.0 to 8.0. It is well known that P can affect metal toxicity to phytoplankton and that the pH of many surface waters can be above 8.0. We aimed to test whether the single-species bioavailability model for Pb could predict the influence of pH on Pb toxicity to a phytoplankton community at both low and high P supply. A 10-species phytoplankton community was exposed to Pb for 28 days at two different pH levels (7.2 and 8.4) and two different P supply levels (low and high, i.e., total P input 10 and 100 µg/L, respectively) in a full factorial 2 × 2 test design. We found that the effects of total Pb on three community-level endpoints (biodiversity, community functioning, and community structure) were highly dependent on both pH and P supply. Consistent lowest-observed-effect concentrations (LOECs) ranged between 21 and >196 µg total Pb/L and between 10 and >69 µg filtered Pb/L. Long-term LOECs were generally higher, that is, 69 µg total Pb/L (42 µg filtered Pb/L) or greater, across all endpoints and conditions, indicating recovery near the end of the exposure period, and suggesting the occurrence of acclimation to Pb and/or functional redundancy. The highest toxicity of Pb for all endpoints was observed in the pH 7.2 × low P treatment, whereas the pH 8.4 × low P and pH 8.4 × high P treatment were the least sensitive treatments. At the pH 7.2 × high P treatment, the algal community showed an intermediate Pb sensitivity. The effect of pH on the toxicity of filtered Pb could not be precisely quantified because for many endpoints no effect was observed at the highest Pb concentration tested. However, the long-term LOECs (filtered Pb) at low P supply suggest a decrease in Pb toxicity of at least 1.6-fold from pH 7.2 to 8.4, whereas the single-species algal bioavailability model predicted a 2.5-fold increase. This finding suggests that bioavailability effects of pH on Pb toxicity cannot be extrapolated as such from the single species to the community level. Overall, our data indicate that, although the single-species algal Pb bioavailability model may not capture pH effects on Pb ecotoxicity in multispecies systems, the bioavailability-based hazardous concentration for 5% of the species was protective of long-term Pb effects on the structure, function, and diversity of a phytoplankton community in a relevant range of pH and P conditions. Assessing the nonlinear association of environmental factors with antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the Yangtze River Mouth, China

The emergence of antibacterial resistance (ABR) is an urgent and complex public health challenge worldwide. Antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) are considered as a new pollutant by the WHO because of their wide distribution and emerging prevalence. The role of environmental factors in developing ARGs in bacterial populations is still poorly understood. Therefore, the relationship between environmental factors and bacteria should be explored to combat ABR and propose more tailored solutions in a specific region. Here, we collected and analyzed surface water samples from Yangtze Delta, China during 2021, and assessed the nonlinear association of environmental factors with ARGs through a sigmoid model. A high abundance of ARGs was detected. Amoxicillin, phosphorus (P), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), calcium (Ca), and strontium (Sr) were found to be strongly associated with ARGs and identified as potential key contributors to ARG detection. Our findings suggest that the suppression of ARGs may be achieved by decreasing the concentration of phosphorus in surface water. Additionally, Group 2A light metals (e.g., magnesium and calcium) may be candidates for the development of eco-friendly reagents for controlling antibiotic resistance in the future.

Leaf surface features of maize cultivars and response to foliar phosphorus application: effect of leaf stage and plant phosphorus status

Soil phosphorus (P) application is the most common fertilisation technique but may involve constraints due to chemical fixation and microbial immobilisation. Furthermore, excessive P fertilisation leads to P runoff into water bodies, threatening ecosystems, so targeted foliar P fertilisation is an interesting alternative. This study aimed to determine the importance of leaf surface characteristics for foliar P uptake in P-deficient maize (Zea mays L.). The leaf surface of four maize cultivars was characterised by electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and contact angle measurements. Uptake of foliar-applied P by maize cultivars was estimated, measuring also leaf photosynthetic rates after foliar P spraying. Plants of cultivar P7948 were found to be wettable from the 4th leaf in acropetal direction, whereas other cultivars were unwettable until the 6th leaf had developed. Minor variations in stomatal number and cuticle composition were recorded, but no differences in foliar P absorption were observed between cultivars. Nevertheless, cultivars showed variation in the improvement of photosynthetic capacity following foliar P application. Phosphorus deficiency resulted in ultrastructural disorganisation of mesophyll cells and chloroplasts, which impaired photosynthetic performance, yet there was no effect on stomatal frequency and leaf wettability. This study provides new insights into the influence of P deficiency and cultivar on leaf surface characteristics, foliar P uptake and its effect on physiological processes. Understanding the relationships between leaf characteristics and P uptake allows a more targeted evaluation of foliar P fertilisation as an application technique and contributes to the understanding of foliar uptake mechanisms.

Effect of macronutrients (carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus) on the growth of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and nutrient recovery under different trophic conditions

More stringent discharge standards have led to the development of an alternative nutrient recovery system from wastewater. Microalgae cultivation in wastewater treatment works has presented considerable promise from the perspective of sustainable resource management. Growth kinetics models are useful tools to optimize nutrient recovery from wastewater by algal uptake. Therefore, this research aims to identify the growth kinetics of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii under both heterotrophic and phototrophic conditions with different nutrient concentrations that typify those found in wastewater treatment works. In addition, the effects of macronutrients (C, N, and P) on heterotrophic and phototrophic microalgae growth and nutrient recovery were studied. Greater specific growth rates were achieved under heterotrophic conditions than in phototrophic cultivation. The maximum specific growth rates and nutrient recovery efficiencies were achieved at 5 mg P L-1 under both heterotrophic and phototrophic growth conditions. Nitrate was the preferred form of nitrogen source under heterotrophic conditions, while nitrogen sources did not present any significant influences in the phototrophic cultivation. Specific growth rates reported for both heterotrophic and phototrophic microalgae at lower carbon concentrations (3.10 d-1 and 0.46 d-1, sequentially) were higher than those at higher carbon concentrations (1.95 d-1 and 0.22 d-1, respectively). C. reinhardtii presented an extreme capacity to adapt and grow at all experimental conditions tested in heterotrophic and phototrophic cultivations.

Effect of foliar application of phosphorus nanoparticles on the performance and sustainable agriculture of sweet corn

Traditional phosphorus fertilizers are necessary for plant growth but about 80-90% are lost into the surrounding environment via irrigation, therefore nano-fertilizers have been developed as slow-release fertilizers to achieve sustainable agriculture. This trial investigated the impact of the foliar application of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HA-NPs) as a source of nano-phosphorus (P-NPs) on two cultivars of sweet corn (yellow and white) throughout two seasons. The morphology and structure of the prepared HA-NPs were characterized via transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). In addition, agro-morphological criteria, chemical contents (i.e., photosynthetic pigments, phenols, indoles, minerals, etc.), and genomic template stability percentage (GTS%) were evaluated in the produced sweet corn. The application of 50 mg/l HA-NPs improved the growth characteristics, yield per hectare, leaf pigments, and chemical content of yellow sweet corn, whereas the application of 100 mg/l of HA-NPs to white sweet corn enhanced the vegetative characteristics, production, photosynthetic pigments, phenols, and indoles. The difference in results may be due to the presence of a +ve unique band with SCoT-4 and SCot-2 primers at 1250 and 470 bp in yellow and white corn treated with 50 and 100 mg/l, respectively. The minimum GTS% was recorded at a concentration of 75 mg/l for both white and yellow corn. The HA-NPs can be applied as a foliar source of P-NPs to achieve agricultural sustainability.

Copper Ion-Modified Germanium Phosphorus Nanosheets Integrated with an Electroactive and Biodegradable Hydrogel for Neuro-Vascularized Bone Regeneration

Severe bone defects accompanied by vascular and peripheral nerve injuries represent a huge orthopedic challenge and are often accompanied by the risk of infection. Thus, biomaterials with antibacterial and neurovascular regeneration properties are highly desirable. Here, a newly designed biohybrid biodegradable hydrogel (GelMA) containing copper ion-modified germanium-phosphorus (GeP) nanosheets, which act as neuro-vascular regeneration and antibacterial agents, is designed. The copper ion modification process serves to improve the stability of the GeP nanosheets and offers a platform for the sustained release of bioactive ions. Study findings show that GelMA/GeP@Cu has effective antibacterial properties. The integrated hydrogel can significantly boost the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells, facilitate angiogenesis in human umbilical vein endothelial cells, and up-regulate neural differentiation-related proteins in neural stem cells in vitro. In vivo, in the rat calvarial bone defect mode, the GelMA/GeP@Cu hydrogel is found to enhance angiogenesis and neurogenesis, eventually contributing to bone regeneration. These findings indicate that in the field of bone tissue engineering, GelMA/GeP@Cu can serve as a valuable biomaterial for neuro-vascularized bone regeneration and infection prevention.

Resilient and sustainable production of peanut (Arachis hypogaea) in phosphorus-limited environment by using exogenous gamma-aminobutyric acid to sustain photosynthesis

Globally, many low to medium yielding peanut fields have the potential for further yield improvement. Low phosphorus (P) limitation is one of the significant factors curtailing Arachis hypogaea productivity in many regions. In order to demonstrate the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) on peanuts growing under P deficiency, we used a pot-based experiment to examine the effects of exogenous GABA on alleviating P deficiency-induced physiological changes and growth inhibition in peanuts. The key physiological parameters examined were foliar gas exchange, photochemical efficiency, proton motive force, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthase activity of peanuts under cultivation with low P (LP, 0.5 mM P) and control conditions. During low P, the cyclic electron flow (CEF) maintained the high proton gradient (∆pH) induced by low ATP synthetic activity. Applying GABA during low P conditions stimulated CEF and reduced the concomitant ROS generation and thereby protecting the foliar photosystem II (PSII) from photoinhibition. Specifically, GABA enhanced the rate of electronic transmission of PSII (ETRII) by pausing the photoprotection mechanisms including non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) and ∆pH regulation. Thus, GABA was shown to be effective in restoring peanut growth when encountering P deficiency. Exogenous GABA alleviated two symptoms (increased root-shoot ratio and photoinhibition) of P-deficient peanuts. This is possibly the first report of using exogenous GABA to restore photosynthesis and growth under low P availability. Therefore, foliar applications of GABA could be a simple, safe and effective approach to overcome low yield imposed by limited P resources (low P in soils or P-fertilizers are unavailable) for sustainable peanut cultivation and especially in low to medium yielding fields.

Sufficient Phosphorus Enhances Resistance and Changes Accumulation of Lead in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

Phosphorus (P) is critical for algal growth and resistance to environmental stress. However, little is known about the effects of P supply on the lead (Pb) toxicity and accumulation in microalgae. We set up two P concentrations, 315 (PL ) and 3150 μg L-1 (PH ), in algal culture, and the responses of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to various Pb treatments (0, 200, 500, 1000, 2000, and 5000 μg L-1 ) were investigated. Compared with the PL condition, PH promoted cell growth but reduced cellular respiration by approximately 50%. Moreover, PH alleviated damage to the photosynthetic system in algal cells after Pb stress. After exposure to 200-2000 μg L-1 Pb, higher Pb2+ concentrations and Pb removal were observed in the PL medium. However, under exposure to 5000 μg L-1 Pb, less Pb2+ was present but more Pb was removed by the algal cells in the PH medium. More P supply enhanced the secretion of extracellular fluorescent substances by C. reinhardtii. Transcriptomic analysis showed that genes associated with synthesis of phospholipids, tyrosine-like proteins, ferredoxin, and RuBisCO were up-regulated after Pb exposure. Together the findings of our study demonstrated the critical roles of P in Pb accumulation and resistance in C. reinhardtii. Environ Toxicol Chem 2023;42:1960-1970. © 2023 SETAC.

Mixotrophic lifestyle of the ichthyotoxic haptophyte, Prymnesium parvum, offered different sources of phosphorus

Many harmful algae are mixoplanktonic, i.e. they combine phototrophy and phagotrophy, and this ability may explain their ecological success, especially when environmental conditions are not optimal for autotrophic growth. In this study, laboratory experiments were conducted with the mixotrophic and ichthyotoxic haptophyte Prymnesium parvum (strain CCAP 946/6) to test the effects of phosphorus (P) sufficiency and deficiency on its growth rate, phagotrophic and lytic activities. P-deficient P. parvum cultures were grown without or with addition of P in the form of inorganic phosphorus (nutrients) and/or living algal prey (i.e. the cryptophyte Teleaulax amphioxeia). The ingestion rate of P. parvum and prey mortality rate were calculated using flow cytometry measurements based on pigment-derived-fluorescence to distinguish between prey, predators and digesting predators. The first aim of the study was to develop a method taking into account the rate of digestion, allowing the calculation of ingestion rates over a two-week period. Growth rates of P. parvum were higher in the treatments with live prey, irrespective of the concentration of inorganic P, and maximum growth rates were found when both inorganic and organic P in form of prey were added (0.79 ± 0.07 d-1). In addition, the mortality rate of T. amphioxeia induced by lytic compounds was 0.2 ± 0.02 d-1 in the P-deficient treatment, while no mortality was observed under P-sufficiency in the present experiments. This study also revealed the mortality due to cell lysis exceeded that of prey ingestion. Therefore, additional experiments were conducted with lysed prey cells. When grown with debris from prey cells, the mean growth rate of P. parvum was similar to monocultures without additions of prey debris (0.30 ± 0.1 vs. 0.38 ± 0.03 d-1), suggesting that P. parvum is able to grow on prey debris, but not as fast as with live prey. These results provide the first quantitative evidence over two weeks of experiment that ingestion of organic P in the form of living prey and/or debris of prey plays an important role in P. parvum growth and may explain its ecological success in a nutrient-limited environments.

Sulfide inhibition on polyphosphate accumulating organisms and glycogen accumulating organisms: Cumulative inhibitory effect and recoverability

Sulfate in wastewater can be reduced to sulfide and its impact on the stability of enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) is still unclear. In this study, the metabolic changes and subsequent recovery of polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) and glycogen accumulating organisms (GAOs) were investigated at different sulfide concentrations. The results showed that the metabolic activity of PAOs and GAOs was mainly related to H2S concentration. Under anaerobic conditions, the catabolism of PAOs and GAOs was promoted at H2S concentrations below 79 mg/L S and 271 mg/L S, respectively, and inhibited above these concentrations; whereas anabolism was consistently inhibited in the presence of H2S. The phosphorus (P) release was also pH-dependent due to the intracellular free Mg2+ efflux from PAOs. H2S was more destructive to the esterase activity and membrane permeability of PAOs than those of GAOs and prompted intracellular free Mg2+ efflux of PAOs, resulting in worse aerobic metabolism and subsequent recovery of PAOs than GAOs. Additionally, sulfides facilitated the production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), especially tightly bound EPS. The amount of EPS in GAOs was significantly higher than that in PAOs. The above results indicated that sulfide had a stronger inhibition to PAOs than GAOs, and when sulfide was present, GAOs had a competitive advantage over PAOs in EBPR.

The effects of nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients on the bioremediation of oil-contaminated waters by Gracilariopsis persica in the coastal areas of Bandar Abbas

This study investigated the influence of nitrogen and phosphorus on the bioremediation of crude oil by Gracilariopsis persica in littoral zone waters. In order to determine the role of nitrogen in bioremediation, urea, ammonium, and nitrate were used with and without phosphorus, with the result that nitrogen had no significant effect on the degradation of oil by Gracilariopsis persica in the littoral zone. Nearly 90 % of the crude oil used in this study was degraded by treatments with added phosphorus and nitrogen. A significant increase in the degradation of oil-contaminated water was observed after the application of phosphorus. Comparatively to the application of phosphorus alone, nitrogen and phosphorus together increased the rate of biodegradation by the algal species. Based on the results of the study, nitrogen and phosphorus have complementary effects on the bioremediation of oil by Gracilariopsis persica.

Development of transgenic composite Stylosanthes plants to study root growth regulated by a β-expansin gene, SgEXPB1, under phosphorus deficiency

A highly efficient transformation procedure to generate transgenic Stylosanthes roots was established. SgEXPB1 is involved in Stylosanthes root growth under phosphorus deficiency. Stylo (Stylosanthes spp.) is an important forage legume widely applied in agricultural systems in the tropics. Due to the recalcitrance of stylo genetic transformation, functional characterization of candidate genes involved in stylo root growth is limited. This study established an efficient procedure for Agrobacterium rhizogenes-mediated transformation for generating transgenic composite plants of S. guianensis cultivar 'Reyan No. 5'. Results showed that composite stylo plants with transgenic hairy roots were efficiently generated by A. rhizogenes strains K599 and Arqual, infecting the residual hypocotyl at 1.0 cm of length below the cotyledon leaves of 9-d-old seedlings, leading to a high transformation efficiency of > 95% based on histochemical β-glucuronidase (GUS) staining. Notably, 100% of GUS staining-positive hairy roots can be achieved per composite stylo plant. Subsequently, SgEXPB1, a β-expansin gene up-regulated by phosphorus (P) deficiency in stylo roots, was successfully overexpressed in hairy roots. Analysis of hairy roots showed that root growth and P concentration in the transgenic composite plants were increased by SgEXPB1 overexpression under low-P treatment. Taken together, a highly efficient A. rhizogenes-mediated transformation procedure for generating composite stylo plants was established to study the function of SgEXPB1, revealing that this gene is involved in stylo root growth during P deficiency.

Effect of a biosynthetic bacterial 6-phytase on the digestibility of phosphorus and phytate in midlactating dairy cows

The effect of a biosynthetic bacterial 6-phytase (PhyG) on the digestibility and excretion of crude protein (CP), phosphorus (P), and phytate-P (PP) in midlactating dairy cows was investigated. Thirty Holstein-Friesians were assigned to three treatments with 10 cows per treatment in a randomized block design. Cows were fed forage (grass and corn silage) provided ad libitum, and a concentrate (without added inorganic phosphate) administered separately in amounts individualized per cow according to milk production, supplemented with phytase according to treatment. The formulated forage-to-concentrate-ratio was ~65%:35%. Dietary treatments comprised the control diet (CON) and CON supplemented with 2,000 (PhyG2,000) or 5,000 (PhyG5,000) phytase units (FTU)/kg DM in the total diet. The experiment comprised an 18-d preperiod for the collection of data to facilitate the allocation of cows to the treatments, followed by a 19-d experimental period comprising a 14-d diet adaptation period and 5 d of twice daily feces collection. Fecal samples were analyzed for the determination of apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of chemical constituents in the diet. The ATTD of PP was 92.6% in CON suggesting a high but incomplete degradation of phytate by ruminal microbial phytases. Cows fed PhyG2,000 exhibited increased ATTD of CP and PP [68.4% (2.7% points above CON) and 95.1% (2.5% points above CON), respectively] whilst PhyG5,000 further increased ATTD PP and also increased ATTD P [54.1% (7.8% points above CON)]; ATTD of Ca tended to be increased in PhyG5,000 vs. CON. Linear dose-response relationships were observed for ATTD of DM, CP, P, Ca, and PP. In addition, fecal excretion of P, and PP linearly reduced and that of Ca and CP tended to linearly reduce with increasing PhyG dose level. No difference was observed for DM intake and milk composition was unaffected except for milk protein which tended to be higher in cows fed PhyG5,000 than CON. In summary, the addition of exogenous phytase at 2,000 FTU/kg or higher to diets of lactating dairy cows improved P, PP, Ca, and CP digestibility and reduced fecal excretion of P, PP, and CP in a dose-dependent manner.

Effect of phosphorus limitation on Se uptake efficiency in the microalga Nannochloropsis oceanica

Microalgae are considered an efficient accumulator and promising source of Se for feed additive purposes. This study aimed at investigating, for the first time, the effect of phosphorus limitation on Se accumulation and uptake efficiency in N.oceanica. A range of phosphorus concentrations (0-2470 µM) were tested in either the presence or absence of sodium selenite (0, 5, 30 µM). Se accumulation was increased up to 16-fold and Se uptake efficiency was increased up to 3.6-fold under phosphorus growth-limiting concentrations. N.oceanica was then cultivated in a 1.8L flat-panel photobioreactor in batch operation under two phosphorus growth-limiting concentrations (250 and 750 µM) where the accumulation of Se in the microalgal biomass, as well as its presence in the spent medium were analysed. This study is the first to investigate the effect of phosphorus limitation for increasing Se accumulation in microalgae, and to prevent the release of Se in wastewater.

Experimental study on effects of prometryn exposure scenarios on Microcystis aeruginosa growth and N and P concentrations

Single exposure toxicity tests of herbicides like prometryn are commonly applied in studying ecological and environmental issues, but they are more likely exposed to microalgae through multiple applications of irrigation and water flow. The toxicity of prometryn towards Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa) at different growth stages (different exposure period) was determined by single and multiple exposures (different exposure mode) through 39-day batch-experiment comparison study. Inhibition rates showed that M. aeruginosa growth was greatly inhibited by exposure to prometryn in a final concentration of 80 and 160 μg·L^-1 (p < 0.05). Specifically, with the same prometryn exposure periods (lag or exponential phase) and concentrations, a single exposure displayed larger toxicity on M. aeruginosa than repetitive additions of prometryn in general according to inhibition rates. Moreover, with the same prometryn exposure modes and concentrations, inhibitory effect was higher with prometryn exposure in lag phase than that in exponential phase according to M. aeruginosa densities and inhibition rates. In general, variations of total dissolved phosphorus (TDP) and total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) with time responded negatively to M. aeruginosa growth, and added prometryn inhibits the utilization rate of both P and N. Logistic function was well used to describe algae densities (R² = 0.979 ~ 0.995), growth rates (R² = 0.515 ~ 0.731), specific growth rates (R² = 0.301 ~ 0.648) and inhibition rates (R² = 0.357 ~ 0.946) along with its combination with Monod function. In addition, results showed that shifts of limiting nutrients could be prompted by not only M. aeruginosa growth but also prometryn exposure scenarios. This study provides a basis for studying the potential harm of prometryn to the ecological environment.

Impact of radiotherapy on the morphological and compositional structure of intra-radicular dentin

Considering the side effects in the oral cavity and dental structures of radiotherapy (RDT) for head and neck cancer, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of RDT on the root dentin concerning the obliteration of dentinal tubules, the inorganic composition of intra-radicular dentin, and the integrity of collagen fibers. Thirty human canines were selected from a biobank and randomly divided into two groups (n=15). The samples were sectioned buccolingually, and a hemisection was used for structural analysis by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). Low-vacuum SEM images were obtained at 2000-x magnification to observe the obliteration of the dentinal tubules. Moreover, compositional evaluation was performed using EDS. After RDT, the SEM and EDS analyses were repeated using the same methodology. RDT was applied fractionally at 2 Gy per day, 5 days per week, for 7 weeks, resulting in a total dose of 70 Gy. The collagen integrity of the irradiated and non-irradiated samples was analyzed using Masson's trichrome and picrosirius red staining polarization microscopy. Samples subjected to RDT exhibited dentinal tubule obliteration (p < 0.001); low integrity of type I and III collagen fibers (p < 0.05); compositional reduction of calcium (p = 0.012), phosphorus (p = 0.001), and magnesium (p < 0.001); an increased Ca/P ratio (p < 0.001). RDT affects the structure of dentinal tubules, the inorganic composition of intra-radicular dentin, and the collagen fiber integrity in the root dentin, which may interfere with the effectiveness and durability of dental procedures.

The combined impacts of selenium and phosphorus on the fate of arsenic in rice seedlings (Oryza sativa L.)

Although the single role of selenium (Se) or phosphorus (P) in regulating the As contamination of rice plants has been reported in some studies, the combined impacts of Se and P on the fate of As and the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, the uptake, translocation, and biotransformation of As mediated by Se were investigated in rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings hydroponically cultured with P-normal and P-deficient conditions. The results showed Se addition stimulated the uptake of arsenite and arsenate by 15.6% and 30.7%, respectively in P-normal condition, and such effect was more profound in P-deficient condition with the value of 43.8% and 70.8%. However, regardless of Se addition, P-deficiency elevated the As uptake by 47.0%-92.1% for arsenate but had no obvious effects for arsenite. Accompanying with the As transfer factor_Shoot/Root reduced by 74.5%-80.2% and 71.1%-85.7%, Se addition decreased the shoot As content by 65.8%-69.7% and 59.6%-73.1%, respectively, in the arsenite- and arsenate-treated rice plants. Relative to the corresponding treatments of P-normal condition, P-deficiency reduced the As transfer factor_Shoot/Root by 38.9%-52.5% and thus decreasing the shoot As content by 35.2%-42.5% in the arsenite-treated plants; while the opposite impacts were observed in the arsenate-treated plants, in which the shoot As content was increased by 22.4%-83.7%. The analysis results of As species showed As(III) was dominant in both shoots (68.9%-75.1%) and roots (94.9%-97.2%), and neither Se addition nor P-deficiency had obvious impacts on the interconversion between As(III) and As(V). Our results demonstrate the regulating roles of Se in As accumulation mainly depend on P regimes and the specific rice tissues, but the effects of P-deficiency on the fate of As were influenced by the form of As added to the culture.

Nitrogen and Phosphorus Fertilizer Increases the Uptake of Soil Heavy Metal Pollutants by Plant Community

Soil heavy metal pollution is widespread around the world. Compared with hyperaccumulation plants, non-hyperaccumulator plant communities have many advantages in the remediation of heavy metals pollution in soil. The application of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) is inexpensive and convenient, which can promote the growth of plant. N and P fertilizer might increase plant community remediation of heavy metal polluted soils. In our study, the effects of N and P fertilizer on remediation of soil Cd, Cu, Pb pollution by plant community were studied through a greenhouse experiment. Our results indicated that addition of N, P and N + P fertilizer increased plant community aboveground biomass. Simultaneously, addition of N and P fertilizer increased the accumulation of heavy metals in aboveground of the plant community and accelerated plants absorption soil heavy metals. Among them, N fertilizer had the best effect. Our results provide an inexpensive method for remediation heavy metal pollution of contaminated farmland, abandoned land and mine tailings, etc.

Modeling root loss reveals impacts on nutrient uptake and crop development

Despite the widespread prevalence of root loss in plants, its effects on crop productivity are not fully understood. While root loss reduces the capacity of plants to take up water and nutrients from the soil, it may provide benefits by decreasing the resources required to maintain the root system. Here, we simulated a range of root phenotypes in different soils and root loss scenarios for barley (Hordeum vulgare), common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), and maize (Zea mays) using and extending the open-source, functional-structural root/soil simulation model OpenSimRoot. The model enabled us to quantify the impact of root loss on shoot dry weight in these scenarios and identify in which scenarios root loss is beneficial, detrimental, or has no effect. The simulations showed that root loss is detrimental for phosphorus uptake in all tested scenarios, whereas nitrogen uptake was relatively insensitive to root loss unless main root axes were lost. Loss of axial roots reduced shoot dry weight for all phenotypes in all species and soils, whereas lateral root loss had a smaller impact. In barley and maize plants with high lateral branching density that were not phosphorus-stressed, loss of lateral roots increased shoot dry weight. The fact that shoot dry weight increased due to root loss in these scenarios indicates that plants overproduce roots for some environments, such as those found in high-input agriculture. We conclude that a better understanding of the effects of root loss on plant development is an essential part of optimizing root system phenotypes for maximizing yield.

Increasing phosphorus inhibits the retention and prevention of cadmium by iron plaque and promotes cadmium accumulation in rice plants

Iron (Fe) plaque is an important component of rice roots because it influences the uptake and transport of cadmium (Cd) in rice. In this study, a hydroponic experiment was developed to investigate the influence of phosphorus (P) on the formation of iron plaque on the root surface as well as the influence on Cd uptake in rice plants. Three important results were obtained, as follows. (1) During the formation of iron plaque induced by exogenous Fe, P supply was beneficial for the iron plaque formation, but it restrained the Cd retention capability, resulting in a decrease in Cd in iron plaque by 35.48-61.93%, and leading to an increase in Cd in rice roots from 72.13 mg kg^-1 to 112.78 mg kg^-1 (2) After the iron plaque induction, the formation of iron plaque was inhibited by P supply, resulting in the amount of iron plaque decreasing by 18.46-54.57%, and the Cd in iron plaque decreased by 3.93-31.78%. Then, the Cd retention capability and the prevention effect simultaneously decreased, and as a result, the Cd in rice roots increased from 100.83 mg kg^-1 to 146.03 mg kg^-1 (3) Without exogenous Fe induction, P sufficiency continued to increase the amount of iron plaque and decrease the Cd in iron plaque, and increase the Cd in rice plants. These results suggested that P supply increases the amount of iron plaque, which is ineffective for Cd retention, such as non-reddish-brown iron plaque (NIP), and then decreases the capacity of iron plaque to retain Cd. Additionally, the P supply decreased the amount of formed iron plaque, causing the decreasing prevention effect. Therefore, excessive application of P fertilizer should be avoided in Cd-contaminated paddy fields.

Effect of the administration of different forms of vitamin D on central blood pressure and aortic stiffness, and its implication in the reduction of albuminuria in chronic kidney disease

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

Vitamin D(vitD) participates in phospho-calcium metabolism and exerts multiple pleiotropic effects. There is tissue 1-α (OH)ase that converts 25-OH cholecalciferol (25 (OH) D) in calcitriol that exerts autocrine and paracrine effects. 25 (OH)D deficiency could limit these tissue effects of vitD. The administration of nutritional vitD and the activator of the vitD receptor, paricalcitol, may promote beneficial effects on vascular and renal function. The objective of this work was to study in subjects with chronic kidney disease (CKD) the effect that the administration of different forms of vitD has on arterial function and albuminuria, and the possible relationship between the modifications of these variables.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

We studied in 97 patients with CKD stages 3-4 the effect of the administration of cholecalciferol (group 2; n: 35) and paricalcitol (n: 31; group 3) on parameters derived from brachial blood pressure, aortic blood pressure and on aortic stiffness studied using carotid-femoral pulse velocity (Vp_c-f), and on albuminuria. A group of patients with stages 3-4 CKD who did not receive vitD therapy served as a control group (n: 31; group 1). All parameters were studied at baseline and after the follow-up period which was 7 ± 2 months.

RESULTS

In the baseline phase, no differences were observed between the groups in brachial systolic blood pressure (bSBP), central systolic blood pressure (SBP), brachial pulse pressure (bPP), and central pulse pressure (pCP) or in aortic stiffness that was increased in all groups with a baseline Vp_c-f value of 10.5 (9.2-12.1) m/sec. The baseline albuminuria value in the grouped patients was 229 (43-876) mg / g (median (interquartile range)), with no differences between the groups. Serum calcium and phosphorus increased significantly in those treated with cholecal-ciferol (native vitD) and paricalcitol (active vitD). Parathormone (PTH) values decreased in those treated with paricalcitol.bPP and cPP decreased in all groups treated with native and active vitD. No significant changes in bPP and cPP were observed in the control group. Vp_c-f did not change significantly in any of the groups, although the variation was quantitatively greater in group 3 (11.2±2 vs. 10.7±1.6 (P=.06)). No differences were observed in the changes in Vp_c-f between the groups when adjusted to the baseline values of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), albuminuria, PTH, vitD, brachial and central blood pressure parameters, and their changes with treatment.Those who received treatment with native and active vitD presented a significant decrease in albuminuria of 17% (group 2) and 21% (group 3) compared to a 16% increase in the untreated group (group 1) (P=.01). A decrease in albuminuria ≥30% was observed more frequently in the groups treated with some form of vitD (group 2: 23%; group 3: 45%) than in the control group (13%) (P=.03). The decrease in albuminuria observed in the groups treated with any of the forms of vitD did not vary when the baseline values of the biochemical parameters of phosphorus-calcium metabolism, those of arterial function (PPb, PPc, Vp_c-f) or its modifications were introduced as covariates. There was no significant correlation between changes in Vp_c-f and albuminuria. In logistic regression, changes in arterial function parameters were also not explanatory for the ≥30% decrease in albuminuria.

CONCLUSIONS

In patients with CKD stages 3-4, treated with RAS blockers and with residual albuminuria, the administration of or paricalcitol reduces brachial and aortic pulse pressures, and albuminuria. The decrease in albuminuria does not seem to be mediated, at least not decisively, by changes in central hemodynamics or aortic stiffness.

Black-Phosphorus-Nanosheet-Reinforced Coating of Implants for Sequential Biofilm Ablation and Bone Fracture Healing Acceleration

Incurable implant-related infection may cause catastrophic consequences due to the existence of a biofilm that resists the infiltration of host immune cells and antibiotics. Innovative approaches inspired by nanomedicine, e.g., engineering innovative multifunctional bionic coating systems on the surface of implants, are becoming increasingly attractive. Herein, 2D black phosphorus nanosheets (BPs) were loaded onto a hydroxyapatite (HA)-coated metal implant to construct a BPs@HA composite coating. With its photothermal conversion effect and in situ biomineralization, the BPs@HA coating shows excellent performances in ablating the bacterial biofilm and accelerating fracture healing, which were verified through both in vitro and in vivo studies. Moreover, differentially expressed genes of bone formation and bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) regulated by the BPs@HA coating were identified using absolute quantitative transcriptome sequencing followed by the screening of gene differential expressions. A functional enrichment analysis reveals that the expression of core markers related to BMSC differentiation and bone formation could be effectively regulated by BPs through a metabolism-related pathway. This work not only illustrates the great potential in clinical application of the BPs@HA composite coating to eliminate bacteria and accelerate bone fracture healing but also contributes to an understanding of the underlying molecular mechanism of osteogenesis physiological function regulation based on an analysis of absolute quantitative transcriptome sequencing.

Effect of phosphorus sources on growth and cadmium accumulation in wheat under different soil moisture levels

Both cadmium (Cd) toxicity and water limited stress in crop plants are serious concerns worldwide while little is known about the impact of various phosphorus (P) sources on Cd accumulation in cereals especially under water limited stress. A study was conducted to explore the efficiency of three frequently available P fertilizers on Cd accumulation in wheat under different soil moisture levels. Three different P sources including diammonium phosphate (DAP), single super phosphate (SSP), and nitrophos (NP) were applied in the soil with three levels (0, 50 and 100 mg/kg). The drought stress was applied to half treatments during the latter growth stages of wheat and plants were harvested at maturity. The results demonstrated that water-limited stress decreased the growth and yield of plants than respective treatments without water stress. P supply increased the growth of wheat irrespective of water-limited stress. The effect on growth and yield varied with the sources and levels of P and maximum effects was observed in DAP treatment (100 mg/kg). The P amendments enhanced the leaf photosynthesis and activities of SOD, POD, CAT and decreased the leaf oxidative burst. Water limited stress enhanced the Cd concentrations in shoots, roots, and grains whereas P amendments minimized the Cd concentrations and enhanced the P concentrations in these parts of plants. The results obtained demonstrated that P supply in the form of DAP might be effective in minimization of Cd in grains and can be used for safe cultivation of metal-contaminated soils.

The mechanism of arbuscular mycorrhizal enhancing cadmium uptake in Phragmites australis depends on the phosphorus concentration

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) is a vital strategy to enhance the phytoremediation of cadmium (Cd) pollution. However, the function of AMF was influenced by phosphorus (P) concentration. To reveal the effect of AMF on the Cd accumulation of host plants under different P concentrations and how the AMF and P interact, this study comparatively analyzed the regulatory effects of AMF on the Cd response, extraction, and transportation processes of Phragmites australis (P. australis) under different P levels, and explored its physiological, biochemical and molecular biological mechanisms. The study showed that AMF could induce different growth allocation strategies in response to Cd stress. Moreover, AMF promoted plant Cd tolerance and detoxification by enhancing P uptake, Cd passivation, Cd retention in the cell wall, and functional group modulation. Under P starvation treatments, AMF promoted Cd uptake by inducing Cd to enter the iron pathway, increased the transport coefficient by 493.39%, and retained Cd in stems. However, these effects disappeared following the addition of P. Additionally, AMF up-regulated the expression of ZIP, ZIP, and NRAMP genes to promote cadmium uptake at low, medium, and high phosphorus levels, respectively. Thus, the Cd response mechanism of the AMF-P. australis symbiotic system was P dose-dependent.

Compounds to mitigate cyanobacterial blooms affect growth and toxicity of Microcystis aeruginosa

Numerous products and techniques are used to combat harmful cyanobacterial blooms in lakes. In this study, we tested nine products, the phosphate binders Phoslock® and Aqual-P^TM, the coagulant chitosan, the phosphorus binder and coagulant aluminum salts (aluminum sulphate and sodium aluminate), the copper-based algicides SeClear, Captain® XTR and CuSO₄·5H₂O, the antibiotic Streptomycin and the oxidant hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) on their efficiency to manage the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa). To this end, 7 days of laboratory experiments were conducted and effects were determined on chlorophyll-a, photosystem II efficiency (PSII), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and intracellular and extracellular microcystin (MC) concentrations. The algicides, chitosan and H₂O₂ were the most powerful in reducing cyanobacteria biomass. Biomass reductions compared to the controls yielded: Chitosan (99.8%) > Hydrogen peroxide (99.6%) > Captain XTR (98.2%) > SeClear (98.1%) > CuSO₄·5H₂O (97.8%) > Streptomycin (86.6%) > Phoslock® (42.6%) > Aqual-P^TM (28.4%) > alum (5.5%). Compounds that caused the largest reductions in biomass also strongly lowered photosystem II efficiency, while the other compounds (Phoslock®, Aqual-P^TM, aluminum salts) had no effect on PSII, but strongly reduced SRP. Intracellular MC concentration followed the biomass patterns, extracellular MC was generally lower at higher doses of algicides, chitosan and H₂O₂ after one week. Recovery of PSII was observed in most algicides and chitosan, but not at the highest doses of SeClear and in all streptomycin treatments. Our results revealed that M. aeruginosa can be killed rapidly using several compounds, that in some treatments already signs of recovery occurred within one week. P fixatives are efficient in reducing SRP, and thus acting via resource suppression, which potentially may provide an addition to fast-acting algicides that kill most of the cells, but allow rapid regrowth as sufficient nutrients remain.

Precisely Tuning the Pore-Wall Surface Composition of Bioceramic Scaffolds Facilitates Angiogenesis and Orbital Bone Defect Repair

Orbital bone damage (OBD) may result in severe post-traumatic enophthalmos, craniomaxillofacial deformities, vision loss, and intracranial infections. However, it is still a challenge to fabricate advanced biomaterials that can match the individual anatomical structure and enhance OBD repair in situ. Herein, we aimed to develop a selective surface modification strategy on bioceramic scaffolds and evaluated the effects of inorganic or organic functional coating on angiogenesis and osteogenesis, ectopically and orthotopically in OBD models. It was shown that the low thermal bioactive glass (BG) modification or layer-by-layer assembly of a biomimetic hydrogel (Biogel) could readily integrate into the pore wall of the bioceramic scaffolds. The BG and Biogel modification showed appreciable enhancement in the initial compressive strength (∼30-75%) or structural stability in vivo, respectively. BG modification could enhance by nearly 2-fold the vessel ingrowth, and the osteogenic capacity was also accelerated, accompanied with a mild scaffold biodegradation after 3 months. Meanwhile, the Biogel-modified scaffolds showed enhanced osteogenic differentiation and mineralization through calcium and phosphorus retention. The potential mechanism of the enhanced bone repair was elucidated via vascular and osteogenic cell responses in vitro, and the cell tests indicated that the Biogel and BG functional layers were both beneficial for in vitro osteoblastic differentiation and mineralization on bioceramics. Totally, these findings demonstrated that the bioactive ions or biomolecules could significantly improve the angiogenic and osteogenic capabilities of conventional bioceramics, and the integration of inorganic or organic functional coating in the pore wall is a highly flexible material toolbox that can be tailored directly to improve orbital bone defect repair.

Mitochondrial bioenergetics and redox dysfunction in nephrotoxicity induced by pyrethroid permethrin are ameliorated by flavonoid-rich fraction

The present study was designed to evaluate in vitro and in vivo the potential anti-inflammatory and nephroprotective potential of ethyl acetate fraction extracted from Fumaria officinalis (EAF) against permethrin (PER). Male wistar rats were treated daily by gavage during 7 days as follows: group C: negative control rats received 2 mL/kg bw of corn oil, group EAF: positive control rats received EAF at a dose of 200 mg/kg bw dissolved in water, group PER: rats received PER at a dose of 34.05 mg/kg bw and group (PER + EAF): rats received PER (34.05 mg/kg bw) and EAF (200 mg/kg bw). In vitro study showed the ability of EAF to inhibit protein denaturation and heat-induced hemolysis confirming its anti-inflammatory activity. In vivo, PER treatment decreased calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) levels and increased lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity in plasma. It induced oxidative stress objectified by an increase in the lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation and a perturbation of antioxidant system in kidney and mitochondria. The activities of NADH-ubiquinone reductase, ubiquinol-cytochrome C reductase and cytochrome C oxidase activities were reduced. These alterations were confirmed by histopathological studies. Co-treatment with EAF improved the antioxidant status and mitochondrial bioenergetics. The nephroprotective effects of EAF could be attributed to its modulation of detoxification enzymes and/or free radical scavenging actions.

Long-lasting photocatalytic activity of trace phosphorus-doped g-C3N4/SMSO and its application in antibacterial ceramics

Conventional photocatalysts generate numerous active species-primarily hydroxyl radicals (•OH)-under solar light excitation to exert photocatalytic activity for especially antibacterial effects. However, the light dependence limits their competitiveness against other antimicrobial materials since they do not work at night. Herein, a P-g-C₃N₄/Sr₂MgSi₂O₇:Eu²⁺,Dy³⁺ (P-g-C₃N₄/SMSO) composite day-night photocatalyst is synthesized, using a model methyl orange (MO) substrate, and the impacts of trace P doping and the SMSO composite on the activity of the photocatalyst in MO degradation is investigated; Its antibacterial effect against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus on ceramic surfaces is further examined. The morphology, structure, and composition of the photocatalyst are characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, FT-IR, and UV-vis DRS. Finally, the photocatalytic mechanism is elucidated through active species capture experiments and ESR testing. P doping and the SMSO heterojunction structure reduce the width of the forbidden band of g-C₃N₄ and broaden its visible-light-response range. Moreover, SMSO acts as a light source to realize long-lasting photocatalytic performance of the composite, even in the dark. The photocatalytic process produces •O₂^-, ¹O₂, and h⁺ active species, with •O₂^- and ¹O₂ playing the dominant role-instead of •OH as previously thought.

Black Phosphorus-Synergic Nitric Oxide Nanogasholder Spatiotemporally Regulates Tumor Microenvironments for Self-Amplifying Immunotherapy

The lack of tumor immunogenicity coupled with the presence of tumor immunosuppression severely hinders antitumor immunity, especially in the treatment of "immune cold" tumors. Here, we have developed a drug-free and NIR-enabled nitric oxide (NO)-releasing nanogasholder (NO_PS@BP) composed of an outer cloak of nitrate-containing polymeric NO donor and an inner core of black phosphorus (BP) as the energy converter to spatiotemporally regulate NO-mediated tumor microenvironment remodeling and achieve multimodal therapy. Following NIR-irradiation, BP-induced photothermia and its intrinsic reducing property accelerate NO release from the outer cloak, by which the instantaneous NO burst concomitant with mild photothermia, on the one hand, induces immunogenic cell death (ICD), thereby provoking antitumor responses such as the maturation of dendritic cells (DCs) and the infiltration of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs); on the other hand, it reverses tumor immunosuppression via Treg inhibition, M2 macrophage restraint, and PD-L1 downregulation, further strengthening antitumor immunity. Therefore, this drug-free NO_PS@BP by means of multimodal therapy (NO gas therapy, immune therapy, photothermal therapy) realizes extremely significant curative effects against primary and distant tumors and even metastasis in B16F10 tumor models, providing a new modality to conquer immune cold tumors by NO-potentiated ICD and immunosuppression reversal.

Soil texture and climate limit cultivation of the arsenic hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata for phytoextraction in a long-term field study

Long term field studies are required to bridge gaps between research and practical application of arsenic phytoextraction with the arsenic-hyperaccumulating fern Pteris vittata. In a 4-year field study, we investigated the effects of nutrient application (compost, inorganic or organic nitrogen, inorganic or organic phosphorus) and soil texture (13 % and 35 % clay) on arsenic phytoextraction with P. vittata in moderately contaminated soils (74-79 mg As/kg in the 0-15 cm depth interval). We found the highest phytoextraction rates, 5 ± 1 kg As/ha/y, in a coarse-textured compost-amended soil after 2 years of phytoextraction. Phytoextraction rates decreased over time, likely due to decreased root growth in mature stands, indicating plants should be replaced every 2-3 years to maintain phytoextraction efficiency. Across soil textures, nitrogen or phosphorus application led to a 60 % decrease in mean frond arsenic concentrations, leading to mean phytoextraction rates 54 % lower than in control ferns. In the fine-textured soil, frond arsenic concentrations were 54 % lower than in the coarse-textured soil, and fewer ferns survived from year 3 to 4. Across soil textures, compost application increased fern survival. We show that phytoextraction with P. vittata is limited to specific soil and climate conditions, narrower than those under which P. vittata grows in the wild.

Effect of Dietary Phosphorous Restriction on Fibroblast Growth 2 Factor-23 and sKlotho Levels in Patients with Stages 1-2 Chronic Kidney Disease

Hyperphosphatemia has emerged as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and excess mortality in chronic kidney disease (CKD). The study evaluates the effect of dietary phosphorus (Ph) restriction (DPhR) at an early stage as a therapeutic strategy for delaying CKD progression and preventing CVD. Methods: This was a one-year interventional study conducted on 79 stage 1 and 2 CKD patients. The dietary phosphorus intake (DPhI), fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23), sKlotho and serum phosphorous (SP) levels were analyzed. Patients were categorized into two groups based on their DPhI, recommended DPhI (RPhI) with <1000 mg/day of dietary phosphorous (dietary counselling) and high DPhI (HPhI) with >1000 mg/day (dietary intervention). For comparisons of differences between the two groups, independent t-test; for correlation analysis, Pearson correlation; for identifying the significant associated risk factors for CKD, binary logistic regression analysis and for comparing the means across the three visits, repeated measures ANOVA were used for statistical analysis. Results: The mean age and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of CKD patients were 38 ± 12 years and 82.95 ± 16.93 mL/min/1.73 m2. FGF-23, SP, dietary protein and DPhI were significantly higher and sKlotho was significantly lower in HPhI group than RPhI group. In HPhI group; GFR, sKlotho, SP and FGF-23 correlated significantly with DPhI. Risk factors with a statistical bearing on the progression of CKD were animal-based diet, family history of CKD and hypertension. In HPhI group; GFR, DPhI, SP and FGF-23 levels significantly improved within the intervention period whereas a significant increase in sKlotho levels was observed in both the groups. Conclusion: Restricting DPhI emerged as a favorable therapeutic strategy for CKD patients for improving renal function and controlling hyperphosphatemia. The results of the present study may serve as the basis for future interventional studies with dietary phosphate restriction in the initial stages of CKD that would preserve renal function. Highlights: Early restriction of dietary phosphorus prevents decline in eGFR, elevation in FGF23 and increases Klotho levels.

Adverse role of colonial morphology and favorable function of microcystins for Microcystis to compete with Scenedesmus

In eutrophic freshwaters, Microcystis usually becomes dominant in phytoplankton communities due to the synergistic effects of its special eco-physiological traits and environmental factors. Colonial morphology can protect Microcystis from zooplankton grazing, which indirectly favors Microcystis to outcompete other phytoplankton, although the colonial form is not conducive to the absorption of nutrients. Moreover, unicellular Microcystis usually has competitive advantages over other phytoplankton due to its efficient absorption capacity for nutrients and releasing microcystins. However, the consequence of direct competition between toxic colonial Microcystis and green algae without external grazing pressure still remained unknown. In this study, the competition between toxic colonial Microcystis aeruginosa and a common green alga Scenedesmus obliquus was explored. Results showed that: (1) colonial M. aeruginosa had a higher requirement for key macro-nutrient phosphorus than S. obliquus, and thus its population declined and was replaced by S. obliquus eventually; (2) microcystins released by colonial M. aeruginosa inhibited the photosynthetic activity and growth of S. obliquus at early stage of the competition; (3) the photosynthetic potential of colonial M. aeruginosa was stimulated in response to the competitive stress from S. obliquus, although the population of colonial M. aeruginosa declined eventually; (4) microcystin production of colonial M. aeruginosa was enhanced by phosphorus limitation due to S. obliquus competition and was positively related to photosynthetic potential of colonial M. aeruginosa. These results indicated that, in the absence of complex natural environment, colonial Microcystis cannot outcompete Scenedesmus in a pure competition, although microcystins can play a favorable role in the competition, which clarified the opposite role of colonies and microcystins in the competition of colonial Microcystis against other phytoplankton.

Effects of Bisphosphonate on Osteocyte Proliferation and Bone Formation in Patients with Diabetic Osteoporosis

Background

Bisphosphonate is currently considered one of the drugs for the first-line treatment of osteoporosis because of its ability to inhibit bone resorption, but the molecular mechanism of its effect on osteocyte proliferation and bone formation of diabetic osteoporosis is still unclear.

Objective

To confirm the potential effect on of bisphosphonate on osteocyte proliferation and bone formation in patients having diabetic osteoporosis (DO).

Methods

Sixty DO patients admitted to our hospital from February 2019 to April 2021 were randomly selected and divided into the bisphosphonate group and the control group. The total incidence, incidence of hip fracture, efficacy, bone mineral density, osteocalcin, pain score, osteocyte proliferation, bone formation index, serum calcium, and phosphorus contents were compared between two groups.

Results

The curative effect of bisphosphonic acid group was better than that of control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Compared with the control group, the bone mineral density and osteocalcin in the bisphosphonic acid group were significantly improved after treatment, and the pain score in the bisphosphonic acid group was significantly lower than that in the control group (P < 0.05). After intervention treatment, the OD and PINP values in the bisphosphonate group were significantly different from those in the control group (P < 0.05). After treatment, the contents of serum calcium and phosphorus in the bisphosphonic acid group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P < 0.05). The incidence of hip fracture, spinal fracture, and other fractures in the bisphosphonic acid group was significantly lower than that in the control group (P < 0.05).

Conclusion

The treatment of DO with bisphosphonate is capability of effectively improving bone cell proliferation and bone formation, further alleviating clinical symptoms and promoting the improvement of the disease.

Phosphorus fertilization regimes and rates alter Cd extractability in rhizospheric soils and uptake in maize (Zea mays L.)

Understanding cadmium (Cd) extractability and transfer in soil-plant system is crucial for the evaluation of the remediation effect of Cd-contaminated soils. However, knowledge on the effects of different phosphorus (P) fertilizers on Cd uptake in plants, root morphology, and Cd extractability in rhizosphere soils remains very limited. In this study, a five-year field experiment was conducted to evaluate the impacts of four P fertilizers (i.e. calcium superphosphate, calcium magnesium phosphate, monopotassium phosphate, and compound fertilizer) on Cd uptake in maize (Zea mays L.), root morphology, and Cd extractability in rhizospheric acidic soils contaminated with Cd. The results showed that compared to the control, the contents of rhizospheric DTPA-Cd were respectively 18-40% and 8-29% lowered by the calcium magnesium phosphate and monopotassium phosphate, but 21-59% and 10-36% elevated by the calcium superphosphate and compound fertilizer. Similar effects of P fertilizers were observed on exchangeable Cd. Furthermore, the altered levels of the DTPA-Cd and exchangeable Cd in the rhizospheric soils were greater than those in the non-rhizospheric soils. Moreover, different P fertilization regimes altered the contents of Cd in maize tissues (roots, stems, leaves, and grains), and the alterations were closely related to the variation of DTPA-Cd and exchangeable Cd in the rhizospheric soils. Meanwhile, different P fertilization regimes enhanced root morphological parameters (root length, surface area, and volume), and the activities of urease and surcase. In general, the lowest concentrations of soil DTPA-Cd and Cd in maize tissues were found in the treatments with calcium magnesium phosphate. This study has demonstrated that the calcium magnesium phosphate can be used as a potential amendment agent for the acidic Cd-contaminated soils cultivated with maize.

Meta-Analysis of Effects of Nutritional Intervention Combined with Calcium Carbonate D3 Tablets on Bone Mineral Density, Bone Metabolism, and Curative Effect in Patients with Osteoporosis

To investigate the changes in bone mineral density, bone metabolism, and efficacy of nutritional intervention combined with calcium carbonate D3 tablets in patients with osteoporosis, a RevMan 5.2 software meta-analysis was conducted in this study. According to the therapeutic direction of nutritional intervention combined with calcium carbonate D3 tablets for osteoporosis patients, relevant literature were searched in Wanfang Medical, CNKI, VIP, and PubMed literature databases at home and abroad. Keywords included bone mineral density, bone metabolism, blood calcium (Ca), blood phosphorus (P), osteocalcin (OC), bone mineral density (BMD), serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), efficacy, osteoporosis, and nutritional intervention. Literature that met the criteria were deleted, and meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.2 software. The results indicate that a total of 10 Chinese literature were included. Compared with the monotherapy group, the clinical efficacy, osteocalcin, BMD, alkaline phosphatase, calcium, and phosphorus were significantly higher in the combination group (P < 0.05). Based on calcium carbonate D3, treatment combined with nutritional intervention can enhance the clinical efficacy, bone metabolism, and bone mineral density of patients with osteoporosis, and nutritional intervention combined with calcium carbonate D3 tablets is a feasible program to promote the recovery of patients with osteoporosis.

[Effects of Phosphorus Sufficiency and Deficiency on Cadmium Uptake and Transportation by Rice]

Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient element for crop growth. The effects of P surplus or deficit on Cd absorption and transport in rice in Cd-polluted farmland is not clear. The effects of P deficiency and P sufficiency on Cd uptake, transport, and accumulation in rice under Cd stress were investigated by applying different levels of phosphorus (NaH₂PO₄) in a hydroponic experiment. The results showed that:① with the increase in ρ(P) (1.5-48.0 mg·L^-1), the biomass in all parts of the rice plants had no obvious change, and the contents of photosynthetic pigment (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotenoid) firstly ascended and then descended; high concentrations of P inhibited the synthesis of photosynthetic pigments. ② Under Cd stress, when the P was deficient (1.5-6.0 mg·L^-1) or sufficient (12.0-48.0 mg·L^-1), the Cd content in different parts of the rice increased with the increase in P addition level, and the maximum increase in Cd content in brown rice was 132.1% and 191.2%, respectively. ③ The P/Cd of brown rice showed a piecewise decreasing rule under P deficiency and P sufficiency, and the Cd content in brown rice was significantly negatively correlated with P/Cd (P<0.01). These results indicated that elevating phosphorus concentration when rice was under both the conditions of P deficiency and P sufficiency could promote the uptake and transport of Cd by rice roots under Cd stress, thus increasing the accumulation of Cd in aboveground parts and the risk of excessive Cd in rice.

Artificial Assembled Macrophage Co-Deliver Black Phosphorus Quantum Dot and CDK4/6 Inhibitor for Colorectal Cancer Triple-Therapy

In recent years, therapeutic strategies based on macrophages have been inspiringly developed, but due to the high intricacy and immunosuppression of the tumor microenvironment, the widespread use of these strategies still faces significant challenges. Herein, an artificial assembled macrophage concept (AB@LM) was presented to imitate the main antitumor abilities of macrophages of tumor targeting, promoting the antitumor immunity, and direct tumor-killing effects. The artificial assembled macrophage (AB@LM) was prepared through an extrusion method, which is to fuse the macrophage membrane with abemaciclib and black phosphorus quantum dot (BPQD)-loaded liposomes. AB@LM showed good stability and tumor targeting ability with the help of macrophage membrane. Furthermore, AB@LM reversed the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment by inhibiting regulatory T cells (Tregs) and stimulating the maturation of antigen-presenting cells to activate the antitumor immune response through triggering an immunogenic cell death effect. More importantly, in the colorectal tumor model in vivo, a strong cooperative therapeutic effect of photo/chemo/immunotherapy was observed with high tumor inhibition rate (95.3 ± 2.05%). In conclusion, AB@LM exhibits excellent antitumor efficacy by intelligently mimicking the abilities of macrophages. A promising therapeutic strategy for tumor treatment based on imitating macrophages was provided in this study.
