Evaluation of heavy metals in water and sediments, pollution, and risk indices of Naltar Lakes, Pakistan

Evaluation of sediment quality for heavy metal(loid)s contamination and health risk assessment in the Gulf of Suez, Egypt

The Gulf of Suez faces challenges related to contamination, primarily due to industrial, tourism, and shipping activities along its shores. This study aims to record the distribution, concentration, and potential environmental and health risk impacts of heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) in 30 surface sediment samples collected from Ras Sidr coastline, Gulf of Suez. Various contamination and health indices were employed for this study. The average concentrations of HMs (μg/g) were ranked as follows: Fe (3472), Mn (103.3), V (10.41), As (7.94), Cr (6.00), Zn (5.31), Ni (2.94). The spatial distribution of HMs indicated an increase in Mn, Zn, As, and V levels toward the southern part of the study area, potentially linked to the proximity of manganese quarries and their metal association at Abu Zenima. Contamination indices revealed moderately severe enrichment with As, minor enrichment with Mn, and no enrichment for the remaining HMs. Multivariate analysis suggested a natural origin for Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, Zn, and V, while As were likely anthropogenic. Values of hazard index (HI) for HMs in both adults and children followed the descending order of As > Fe > Cr > V > Mn > Ni > Zn. However, all HI values were below 1.0, indicating no significant non-carcinogenic risk for individuals along the Ras Sidr coastline. 19 samples exhibited lifetime cancer risk (LCR) values exceeding 1 × 10-4 for As in children, suggesting potential carcinogenic risks. LCR values for As in adults and Cr in adults and children ranged from 1 × 10-5 to less than 1 × 10-6, indicating acceptable or tolerable levels of carcinogenic risk and no significant threats to health.

Spatial distribution, compositional pattern, and source apportionment of colloidal trace metals in the coastal water of Shandong Peninsula, northeastern China

The Shandong Peninsula (SP) is the largest peninsula in China hosting rich economic and agricultural activities. In this study, we investigated the behavior of dissolved Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb and their colloidal phases in the coastal and estuarine areas of SP. Pb and Zn had the highest contamination factors of 0.22-10.15 and 0.90-4.41, respectively. The <1 kDa accounted for 23-57 % of the total dissolved phase. Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb were more likely to bind to 100 kDa-0.45 μm colloids (21-57 %). For colloidal Fe and Cu, the adsorption-release behavior had more significant effects on their dynamics. In contrast, the changes in colloidal Mn, Cd, and Pb were mainly controlled by the combined influence of temperature, dissolved oxygen, and microbial activity. However, the 1-3 kDa Zn exhibited a greater pH-dependent dispersion and was significantly positively correlated with it.

Controlling factors and sources-specific ecological risks associated with toxic metals in core sediments from cascade reservoirs in Southwest China

Toxic metals (TMs) in reservoir sediments pose significant risks to ecosystem security and human safety, yet their presence in the cascade reservoirs of the Lancang River remains understudied. This research examined TMs in core sediments from the Manwan (MW) and Dachaoshan (DCS) cascade reservoirs, aiming to elucidate contamination characteristics, controlling factors, and source-specific ecological risks. The study revealed that the concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, and Zn in the MW Reservoir (37.3, 0.54, 95.1, 44.0, 0.09, 44.8, and 135.7 mg/kg) were notably higher compared to the DCS Reservoir (14.6, 0.30, 82.6, 31.0, 0.08, 36.6, and 108.7 mg/kg). While both reservoirs demonstrated elevated contamination levels of Cd and Hg, the MW Reservoir also exhibited high levels of As, whereas the DCS Reservoir showed relatively high levels of Pb. Mining activities in upstream metal deposits significantly correlated Cd, Hg, and Zn in the MW Reservoir with sulfur. In both reservoir sediments, Cr and Ni displayed a greater affinity for iron oxides, while As, Cd, Cu, Hg, and Zn showed more affinity with manganese oxides. Ecological risk index (RI) values in half of the sediments from the MW Reservoir ranged from 300 to 600, denoting a significant ecological risk. Conversely, in the DCS Reservoir, 93.3 % of the sediments exhibited RI values between 150 and 300, signifying a moderate ecological risk. Source-oriented ecological risks highlighted the need for particular attention to Cd from anthropogenic sources in the MW Reservoir. These findings underscore the importance of implementing measures for TM contamination prevention and control, contributing to strategic planning for sustainable water resource management in the Lancang-Mekong River.

Evaluation of irrigation, drinking, and risk indices for water quality parameters of alpine lakes

Alpine lakes are aquatic ecosystems that maintain and regulate water supply for the downstream streams, rivers, and other reservoirs. This study examined the water characteristics of various alpine lakes in Gilgit-Baltistan, Northern Pakistan. For this purpose, water was sampled and investigated for basic parameters, anions, and cations using the multi-parameter analyzers and atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Physicochemical parameters of alpine lakes were noted under the World Health Organization water guidelines, except for fluoride (F-) and turbidity in 4.3% and 36% of samples, respectively. Water quality index (WQI) classified samples (93%) as excellent and good quality (7%). Results showed maximum chronic daily intake values (0.14 ± 0.01 mg/kg-day) for nitrate (NO3-) and hazard quotient (0.80 ± 0.24) for F- in children via water intake from Upper Kachura and Shausar Lakes, respectively. Statistical analyses of Piper and Gibbs's plots revealed that the water quality is mainly characterized by bedrock geology.

Spatiotemporal variations, health risk assessment, and sources of potentially toxic elements in potamic water of the Anday Stream Basin (Türkiye), Black Sea Region

Monitoring and protecting freshwater habitats are paramount for a sustainable water management perspective. This study investigated potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the potamic water of the Anday Stream Basin (Türkiye), Black Sea Region, for a hydrological year (from May 2020 to April 2021). Among PTEs, the highest average values were recorded for sodium (Na) at 41.3 mg/L and the lowest for mercury (Hg) at 0.009 μg/L and noted under quality guidelines. The stream was found to be at the level of "Low Heavy Metal Pollution" and "Low Contamination" based on the ecotoxicological risk indices. The highest calculated hazard quotient (HQ) value of 1.21E-02 for Cd was noted in the children via the dermal pathway and the lowest of 6.91E-06 for Fe in adults via the ingestion pathway. Results revealed a higher hazard index (HI) value of 1.50E-02 for Cd to children and the lowest of 1.98E-05 for Fe to adults. As a result of applying agricultural risk indices, the stream showed sodium adsorption ratio values less than 6 and was found to be "Excellent" for agriculture. However, the sodium percentage values were less than 20 and found "Permissible" and the magnesium hazard > 50 and noted as "Unsuitable" for agriculture. Statistical analysis revealed that natural factors mainly attributed to PTE contamination of the Anday Stream Basin.

Cyanoremediation of heavy metals (As(v), Cd(ii), Cr(vi), Pb(ii)) by live cyanobacteria (Anabaena variabilis, and Synechocystis sp.): an eco-sustainable technology

The cyanoremediation technique for heavy metal (HM) removal from wastewater using live cyanobacteria is promising to reduce the pollution risk both for the environment and human health. In this study, two widely recognized freshwater cyanobacteria, Anabaena variabilis and Synechocystis sp., were used to explore their efficacy in HM (As(v), Cd(ii), Cr(vi), Pb(ii)) removal. The different optimum adsorption conditions were pH 8 and 7.5 for A. variabilis and Synechocystis sp., respectively, but the temperature (25 °C) and contact time (48 hours) were the same for both strains. Under these specified conditions, A. variabilis exhibited the capability to remove 25% of As(v), 78% of Cd(ii), 54% of Cr(vi), and 17% of Pb(ii), whereas Synechocystis sp. removed 77% of As(v), 57% of Cd(ii), 91% of Cr(vi), and 77% of Pb(ii) at different initial concentrations. Metal diversity interfered negatively with cyanobacterial growth, especially Cd(ii) and As(v), as measured by OD730, dry biomass, chlorophyll a, and carotenoid production for both strains. Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR) analysis revealed the existence of diverse surface binding sites for HM adsorption, stemming from proteins and polysaccharides. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) confirmed the presence of HMs on the surface of the cyanobacterial cells. Finally, the zeta potential results indicating alterations in the surface negative charges elucidated the adsorption mechanisms involved in the HM removal by both cyanobacteria. These results provided a comprehensive understanding of the HM adsorption mechanism by cyanobacteria, offering valuable theoretical insights that can be extrapolated to enhance our comprehension of the cyanoremediation mechanisms by various other cyanobacterial strains.

Appraisal of treated drinking water quality from arsenic removal units in West Bengal, India: Approach on safety, efficiency, sustainability, future health risk and socioeconomics

The present study depicts the true failed scenario of the arsenic (As) removal units (ARU) in West Bengal by evaluating their treated water quality. Annual As removal efficiency of the 12 studied ARUs range between 35.2% and 82.6%. A comprehensive physico-chemical parameters and trace elements analysis find almost 25% and 16.7% of treated drinking water samples with poor water quality index (WQI) and high heavy metal evaluation index (HEI), respectively. The pond-based water treatment plant maintains the production of continuous As-safe water with a range between 60.2% and 66.7% due to its high Fe/As ratio. It's a discontent concluding the treated drinking water of the groundwater based-ARUs were observed with sufficient As mediated cancer risk (3 ×10-3). The non-cancer risk (HQ) of As is safe for the surface water treatment plant (0.38), whereas it is threatening for the groundwater based-ARUs (7.44). However, the drinking water samples are safe in view of HQ from the other trace elements like Hg, Al, Cd, Cr, Pb, F- and NO3-. Small scale ARU could be a feasible mitigation strategy in reducing the As menace in the long run if the plants are maintained correctly. Nevertheless, surface treated water is the most sustainable solution as withdrawal of groundwater for drinking purpose is not a viable practice.

Characterization of soil trace metal pollution, source identification, and health risk assessment in the middle reaches of the Guihe River Basin

The natural environment, as well as human production and survival, is intrinsically dependent on soil. This study comprehensively assessed the pollution status, health risks, and sources of trace metals in the middle reaches of the River Gui Basin (MRGB) utilizing the geoaccumulation index, potential ecological risk index (PERI), and human health risk evaluation method. The findings of this study provide the following key insights: (1) only Cu and Pb levels in the MRGB soils did not exceed the background values established for soils in Weifang City (WFC). (2) The geoaccumulation status in most areas of the MRGB ranged from non-polluted to mildly polluted, with the overall ecological risk classification ranging from mild to moderate. (3) The cumulative non-carcinogenic risk for humans in the MRGB remained within acceptable limits, whereas the carcinogenic risk indices fell within tolerable levels. Oral ingestion emerged as the primary exposure pathway for both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks. (4) Cu, Zn, Ni, and Cr concentrations in MRGB soils primarily stemmed from natural sources associated with parent rocks, with Zn exhibiting additional influence from anthropogenic factors. In contrast, Pb, Cd, Hg, and As concentrations were predominantly driven by anthropogenic sources. Although the soils in the MRGB typically exhibited mild-to-moderate contamination levels, the contamination levels of Hg and Cd were notably more severe. As and Cr were significant health hazards. Most soil contamination sources are attributed to anthropogenic factors, warranting heightened attention from the relevant authorities.

Assessing the ecological and health risks associated with heavy metal pollution levels in sediments of Big Giftun and Abu Minqar Islands, East Hurghada, Red Sea, Egypt

This study assessed pollution levels, ecological and health risk, and spatial distribution of eight heavy metals in sediments of Big Giftun and Abu Minqar Islands, Red Sea, Egypt. Iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) had the highest contents in both island sediments, while cobalt (Co) in Big Giftun and cadmium (Cd) in Abu Mingar had the lowest values. The obtained PCA data exhibited positively significant loadings of Cd, Co, copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) with 51.03 % of data variance in Big Giftun, and lead (Pb), Cu, Mn, Ni, Zn, and Fe (37.7 %) in Abu Minqar sediments. The contamination factor (CF) showed low contamination for all metals, except cadmium; Cd (moderate). The geo-accumulation index (Igeo) values showed uncontaminated (Cd, Co), moderately (Cu), extremely contaminated (Fe, Mn) (Igeo > 5) in Big Giftun, and uncontaminated (Cd), moderately to strongly contaminated (Cu, Ni), and extremely contaminated (Fe, Mn, and Zn) in Abu Minqar sediments. The pollution load index (PLI) values indicated baseline level of contamination (PLI <1), and degree of contamination (DC) indicated low degree of contamination (DC < n) in all sediments. Nemerow pollution index (NPI) showed unpolluted sediments in Abu Minqar (NPI ≤1) and slight pollution (1 < NPI ≤2) in Big Giftun. Cd showed moderate potential ecological risk (40 ≤ Eri < 80) in Big Giftun sediments. Potential ecological risk index (PERI) indicated low risk sediments (PERI <150). Mean effects range median quotient (MERMQ) indicated low-priority risk of toxicity (MERMQ ≤0.1), and toxic risk index (TRI) showed no toxic risk in all sediments (TRI <5). The modified hazard quotient (mHQ) indicated very low severity of contamination (mHQ <0.5). The hazard quotient (HQ) levels of all metals were below the safe value (HQ <1). The hazard index (HI) levels indicated that no chronic risks occur (HI <1). The total cancer risk (TCR) for all metals were below the safe level (1 × 10-4) of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) guidelines.

Pollution status and ecological risks of metals in surface water of a coastal estuary and health risk assessment for recreational users

Since the areas close to the Sundarbans mangrove estuary, which is one of the most dynamic and productive ecosystems in the world, are very suitable for urban and industrial activities, the coastal areas of this ecosystem are constantly exposed to metal contamination. In this study, we analyzed the levels, spatial distributions, sources, pollution status, ecological risks, and health risks for recreational users of 16 metals in surface water collected from 18 sampling sites in the Sundarbans estuary. Considering the mean values of metals, Sr (2523 μg/L), Al (1731 μg/L), B (1692 μg/L) and Fe (1321 μg/L) were the most abundant metals in the coastal waters of the estuary, while Cd (0.977 μg/L), Ni (3.11 μg/L), Cu (5.98 μg/L) and Cr (9.77 μg/L) were the less abundant metals. All metals except Zr had the coefficient of variation (CV) values of over 35%, suggesting that other metals showed strong variation between sampling sites due to anthropogenic activities. Al, Fe and Pb levels of all sampling sites were above the limit values set for coastal and marine waters. Similarly, Pb levels of all sites exceeded the USEPA chronic criterion set for saltwater aquatic life. The results of pollution indices indicated that there was a serious metal pollution in almost all sampling sites. Low ecological risk (ER) at four sites, moderate ER at five sites and considerable ER at nine sites were recorded. Dual hierarchical clustering analysis grouped 16 metals into four clusters based on their potential sources and 18 sampling sites into three clusters based on their similar pollution characteristics. Health risk assessment results indicated that total hazard index (THI) values of all sites for recreational children were above the acceptable level of 1, indicating that water of all sites is not safe for health of children. However, THI values of all sites except ST8 (1.1) and ST11 (1.19) for recreational adults were below 1. Among the metals studied, Zr was found to be metal that contributes the most (75.89%) to total health risk in this coastal estuary. This finding reveals the necessity of monitoring of such less-studied metals such as Zr in the surface water of coastal estuaries. Carcinogenic risk values of As were within or below the acceptable range at all sites, indicating that carcinogenic risks would not be expected for recreational users.

Geochemical modeling and hydrochemical analysis for water quality determination around mine drainage areas

Water sources in mining areas do not retain their natural quality due to the influence of mine drainage. Water quality test was through hydrochemical analysis, speciation modeling, and saturation indices. Water samples were analyzed for pH, conductivity, nitrate, phosphate, sulfate, chlorite, sodium, magnesium, calcium, turbidity, total hardness, lead, zinc, iron, copper, cadmium, manganese, nickel, and chromium. Mean values of turbidity (0.13 mg/L), lead (0.01 mg/L), and cadmium (6.40 mg/L) exceeded their permissible values for potable water. Multivariate statistical analysis shows geogenic and anthropogenic sources of chemical species. Chemical speciation shows that the cations exist mostly in their soluble and mobile forms as free ions. Water quality index of 35-45.5 shows good water for drinking, irrigation, and industrial uses. The values of 63.8-68.8 and 103-121 reflect suitable water for industrial and irrigation uses. The research is integrated and credible in predicting groundwater pollutants to solve water pollution problems. PRACTITIONER POINTS: The mean value of turbidity, Pb, and Cd exceeded the WHO/NSDWQ standards for potable water. Correlation and principal component analyses show that the chemical species are from both geogenic and anthropogenic sources. Chemical speciation shows that the cations exist in their soluble and mobile forms as free ions except Cr. Saturation indices show that the minerals anhydrite, anglesite, vivianite, langite, larnakite, melanterite, and mirabilite are undersaturated in the water sources. Water quality index shows that the water is more suitable for irrigation than drinking and industrial uses.

Metals stress on soil enzyme activities and herbs defense in the vicinity of high traffic roadways

This study has investigated the impact of vehicle sourced heavy metals (HMs) on soil enzyme activities and plants in and around high traffic roadways near the metropolitan area. In detail, the defense response against HM pollution was studied by considering the commonly available herbs around the roadside area namely Alternanthera paronychioides, Ageratum conyzoides, Spilanthes acmella, and Parthenium hysterophorus. The study reported that the HM concentrations such as Cu, Ni, Zn, Mn, and Cr were observed in the range of 6.05 ± 0.1 to 309 ± 0.5 mg/kg in roadside soil and 5.2 ± 0.1to 451 ± 4.2 mg/kg in the herbs collected from roadside area. The soil enzyme (urease, dehydrogenase, amylase, catalase, peroxidase, and polyphenol oxidase) activities decreased by 22.56 to 77.84% in roadside soil and lower IC50 values were observed for DPPH (2.32-4.67) and H2O2 (1.59-2.15) free radical scavenging activities in plants collected from roadside area. The flavonoid and phenolic content in plants collected from the roadside area ranges from 12.65 ± 0.2 to 15.75 ± 0.3 mg quercitin/g and 0.61 ± 0.04 to 1.16 ± 0.1 mg gallic acid/g respectively while in plant collected from the control areas ranges from 7.96 ± 0.1 to 11.24 ± 0.05 and 0.47 ± 0.01 to 0.61 ± 0.1. In addition, the contamination factor (CF) (1.53-11.92) and geo-accumulation index (Igeo) (0.031-2.99) in soil and bioaccumulation factor (BAF) (0.72-2.73) of Cu, Ni, Zn, Mn, and Crin plants indicated that the soil and plants growing along the highway were heavily contaminated with HM. Finally, Pearson correlation matrix confirmed the inhibition effect of HM on soil enzymatic activities and enzymatic defense of plants in response to the HM stress.

Appraisal of heavy metal contents, spatial-temporal variation, toxic metal pollution, and health risk in water and sediment of Uluabat Lake (Ramsar Site, Turkey)

Uluabat Lake holds a significant status as one of our country's essential Ramsar areas. Nevertheless, the lake faces considerable pressure from environmental pollutants. This study employed GIS-based index methods to examine the heavy metal pollution and water quality in Uluabat Lake. To achieve this, sediment and water samples were collected from 19 different locations during various seasons. The concentrations of As, Ni, Cr, Zn, Cu, Cd, Pb, Hg, Al, Fe, and Mn in these samples were analyzed. The average contents of the investigated heavy metals in the lake waters were found to be in the following order: Al > Fe > Mn > As > Zn > Ni > Pb > Cu > Cr > Hg > Cd. The As content in the lake waters exceeded the limit value of 10 μg/L, as defined by TS-266 (2005) and WHO (2017) guidelines. Consequently, the lake waters were deemed unsuitable for drinking. The health risk assessments revealed that consuming the lake waters could lead to both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health problems. However, all other metal concentrations were measured below the specified limit values. Based on index calculations, the heavy metal pollution index value indicated that the lake water samples were suitable for drinking water use. Additionally, all samples fell into the "low pollution" category according to the heavy metal evaluation index, and degree of contamination values. However, geoaccumulation index values indicated that As was moderately contaminated. Moreover, enrichment factors of As, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Cd exhibited significant enrichment in lake sediments, with pollution load index values of all sediment samples indicating the impact of anthropogenic pollutants and a decline in sediment quality. Considering all the obtained results together, it can be concluded that environmental pollutants, especially heavy metal pollution, primarily enter the lake water through stream transports, leading to pollution in Uluabat Lake.

Pollution characteristics, sources and health risks assessment of potentially hazardous elements in sediments of ten ponds in the Saros Bay region (Türkiye)

Pollution of lentic ecosystems by potentially hazardous elements (PHE) due to human activities has become a global concern. In this study, the contents of eight PHEs in the sediments of 10 most important ponds located in the Saros Bay region (Türkiye) were evaluated. The contents of PHEs in the sediments of the ponds ranged from 0.14 mg/kg for Cd to 274 mg/kg for Mn. According to the enrichment factor (EF) results, ponds P3, P8 and P9 for Cd and pond P8 for Pb showed "moderate enrichment". However, the pollution load index (PLI) results indicated that all ponds were in a "baseline contamination" state due to the combined effect of all PHEs. Similarly, based on ecological risk assessment indices, no ecological risk from PHEs was identified. In addition, Cd, Zn, As, Cr, Cu and Pb contents in all ponds were found below threshold effect concentrations. The results of the health risk assessment indicated that non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were not expected for recreational receptors due to exposure to the PHEs in the sediments via incidental ingestion and dermal contact. Correlation and cluster analysis results indicated that although agricultural activities contributed slightly to the As content, all PHEs mainly originated from natural sources.

Effects of four amendments on cadmium and arsenic immobilization and their exposure risks from pakchoi consumption

Exposure to heavy metal(loid)s (HM) through contaminated food chains poses significant health risks to humans. While soil amendments are known to reduce HM bioavailability, their effects on bioaccessibility and health risks in soil-pakchoi-human systems remain unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a greenhouse pot experiment coupling soil immobilization with bioaccessibility-based health risk assessment for Cd and As exposure from pakchoi consumption. Four amendments (attapulgite, shell powder, nanoscale zero-valent iron, and biochar) were applied to soil, resulting in changes to soil characteristics (pH and organic matter), plant dry weight, and exchangeable fractions of As and Cd. Among the tested amendments, biochar exhibited the highest effectiveness in reducing the risk of Cd and As exposure from pakchoi consumption. The bioaccessibility-based health risk assessment revealed that the application of 5% biochar resulted in the lowest hazard index, significantly decreasing it from 1.36 to 0.33 in contaminated soil. Furthermore, the structural equation model demonstrated that pH played a critical role in influencing remediation efficiency, impacting the exposure of the human body to Cd and As. In conclusion, our study offers a new perspective on mitigating exposure risks of soil HM and promoting safe crop production. The results underscore the importance of considering bioaccessibility in health risk assessment and highlight the potential of biochar as a promising amendment for reducing Cd and As exposure from pakchoi consumption.

Superfood consumers' exposure to selected heavy metals

Background: Superfood products are important components of the human diet, which may contain toxic heavy metals that have no beneficial function in the human body (e.g., cadmium, arsenic, mercury). Therefore, due to the high demand for these foods, maintaining their safety is a significant public health concern, resulting in an increasing number of studies in the field of health risk assessment due to population exposure to heavy metals. Aim: The aim of the study was to determine the concentration of selected heavy metals in individual superfood products. Methods: The research material consisted of 48 samples of selected superfood products such as flaxseed, chia seed, black cumin, goji berries, buckwheat, millet, almonds, quinoa and green tea. The collected samples were subjected to the mineralization process. In addition, an exposure assessment was performed by calculating the hazard quotient (HQ). Statistical analysis was performed using Statistica software for cadmium and arsenic. Results: The highest level of cadmium was observed in a sample of flaxseed (ground)-0.35 mg/kg. Again, the highest concentration of arsenic was found in green tea bags (21.94 mg/kg). The exposure assessment showed that the risk of adverse health effects is likely to occur with the consumption of flaxseed, almonds, quinoa and green tea at both the assumed average and maximum arsenic concentrations (HQ > 1). Conclusions: There are many foods on the market that contain heavy metals. The accumulation of various heavy metals in agricultural soils and edible crops should be regularly assessed to minimize public health problems.

Ecotoxicological evaluation of organic contamination in the world's two significant gateways to the Black Sea using GIS techniques: Turkish Straits

This study was carried out to determine the spatial-temporal distributions of limnological parameters of Çanakkale Strait (ÇS) and İstanbul Strait (İS), Turkiye. Fluvial (n = 11) and lacustrine (n = 4) habitats water samples were collected in the dry and rainy seasons of 2022-2023. Among limnological parameters, the highest mean electrical conductivity values of 6063 μS/cm were noted in the İS basin during the rainy season and the lowest was 0.04 mg/L for nitrite in the ÇS basin. Generally, the levels of organic contaminants and ecological risk indices were as follows: rivers of İS > rivers of ÇS > Alibey Dam Lake (İS) > Atikhisar Dam Lake (ÇS). The highest non-carcinogenic health risks of 0.88 were noted for children in the ÇS basin during the dry season and the lowest of <0.01 in Atikhisar Dam Lake during the rainy season. Multivariate statistical techniques were applied to data to categorize investigated ecosystems and sources apportionment of contaminants and geospatial distribution.

Source-specific risk judgement and environmental impact of potentially toxic elements in fine road dust from an integrated industrial city, North China

The contamination of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in road dust of large industrial cities is extremely serious. Determining the priority risk control factors of PTE contamination in road dust is critical to enhance the environmental quality of such cities and mitigate the risk of PTE pollution. The Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) method and geographical models were employed to assess the probabilistic pollution levels and eco-health risks of PTEs originating from different sources in fine road dust (FRD) of large industrial cities, and to identify key factors affecting the spatial variability of priority control sources and target PTEs. It was observed that in FRD of Shijiazhuang, a typical large industrial city in China, more than 97% of the samples had an INI > 1 (INI_mean = 1.8), indicating moderately contaminated with PTEs. The eco-risk was at least considerable (NCRI >160) with more than 98% of the samples, mainly caused by Hg (E_{i (mean)} = 367.3). The coal-related industrial source (NCRI_(mean) = 235.1) contributed 70.9% to the overall eco-risk (NCRI_(mean) = 295.5) of source-oriented risks. The non-carcinogenic risk of children and adults are of less importance, but the carcinogenic risk deserves attention. The coal-related industry is a priority control pollution source for human health protection, with As corresponding to the target PTE. The major factors affecting the spatial changes of target PTEs (Hg and As) and coal-related industrial sources were plant distribution, population density, and gross domestic product. The hot spots of coal-related industrial sources in different regions were strongly interfered by various human activities. Our results illustrate spatial changes and key-influencing factors of priority source and target PTEs in Shijiazhuang FRD, which are helpful for environmental protection and control of environmental risks by PTEs.

Heavy metal mobility in contaminated sediments under seawater acidification

The behavior of heavy metals in contaminated sediment is of ecological significance considering the change of pH caused by ocean acidification. This study investigated the mobility of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Fe, and Mn under experimental conditions for seawater acidification via enrichment of CO₂ gas at different reaction set-ups. The results indicated that the concerned metals behaved differently in the water compared to the sediment. The heavy metals were considerably transferred from sediment to seawater, and the resultant intensity was controlled by the degree of acidification and the chemical state of specific metals. Moreover, labile fractions of heavy metals in sediments were more susceptible to acidification than other fractions. These findings were observed and confirmed using real-time monitoring conducted via the diffusion gradient technique (DGT). Overall, the results of this study provided new insights into exploring the coupling risk of heavy metals with ocean acidification.
