Photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline antibiotic and organic dyes using biogenic synthesized CuO/Fe2O3 nanocomposite: pathways and mechanism insights

Ultrasonication-assisted synthesis of CuO-decorated montmorillonite K30 nanocomposites for photocatalytic removal of emerging contaminants: A response surface methodology approach

Environmental pollution is increasing worldwide due to population and industrialization. Among the various forms of pollution, water pollution poses a significant challenge in contemporary times. In this study, we synthesized CuO-decorated montmorillonite K30 (MK30) nanosheets via a simple ultrasonication technique. The structural, morphological, compositional, and optical properties of the synthesized nanocomposites were evaluated using advanced instrumentation techniques. The morphology of CuO was cubic and cubic CuO evenly designed on the MK30, which was proved by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). The adsorption photocatalytic activity of the synthesized cubic CuO/MK30 composites was examined through the degradation of MB under visible light irradiation. The apparent reaction rate constant of 20% CuO/MK30 was 12.5 folds higher than that of CuO. These conditions included a catalyst dosage ranging from 5 to 15 mg, a pH level ranging from to 3-11, and a pollutant concentration ranging from 5 to 20 mg/L. The optimal conditions for MB dye removal were determined using response surface methodology (RSM). A scavenger study of the composite was conducted and verified that •O2- and •OH radicals play an important role in the degradation process. This investigation addressed the process of adsorption and potential removal pathways, with a particular emphasis on the role of functional groups. The environmentally friendly CuO/MK30 nanocomposites exhibited potential as photocatalysts for efficiently absorbing and degrading MB dye and TC drug pollutants. They represent promising candidates for the treatment of industrial wastewater, aiming to mitigate the environmental threats posed by organic pollutants.

Magnetic iron oxides nanocomposites: synthetic techniques and environmental applications for wastewater treatment

Nanomaterials are an emerging class of compounds with potential to advance technology for wastewater treatment. There are many toxic substances in industrial wastewater that are dangerous to the aquatic ecosystem and public health. These pollutants require the development of novel techniques to remove them from the environment. Iron oxide nanoparticles are being studied and develop as new technology to address the problem of environmental pollution due to their unique properties and effectiveness against different kind of pollutants. A variety of modified iron oxide nanoparticles have been developed through extensive research that mitigates the shortcomings of aggregation or oxidation and enhances their efficiency as novel remediator against environmental pollutants. In this review, we present synthetic approaches used for the preparation of iron oxide nanoparticles and their corresponding nanocomposites, along with the processes in which the materials are used as adsorbent/photocatalysts for environmental remediation. Applications explored includes adsorption of dyes, photocatalytic degradation of dyes, and adsorption of heavy metal ions. The use of iron oxides nanocomposite in real wastewater samples and recyclability of adsorbents and photocatalysts were also explored.

Synthesis of Metal-Organic Framework-Based ZIF-8@ZIF-67 Nanocomposites for Antibiotic Decomposition and Antibacterial Activities

Toxic antibiotic effluents and antibiotic-resistant bacteria constitute a threat to global health. So, scientists are investigating high-performance materials for antibiotic decomposition and antibacterial activities. In this novel research work, we have successfully designed ZIF-8@ZIF-67 nanocomposites via sol-gel and solvothermal approaches. The ZIF-8@ZIF-67 nanocomposite is characterized by various techniques that exhibit superior surface area enhancement, charge separation, and high light absorption performance. Yet, ZIF-8 has high adsorption rates and active sites, while ZIF-67 has larger pore volume and efficient adsorption and reaction capabilities, demonstrating that the ZIF-8@ZIF-67 nanocomposite outperforms pristine ZIF-8 and ZIF-67. Compared with pristine ZIF-8 and ZIF-67, the most active 6ZIF-67@ZIF-8 nanocomposite showed higher decomposition efficacy for ciprofloxacin (65%), levofloxacin (54%), and ofloxacin (48%). Scavenger experiments confirmed that •OH, •O2-, and h+ are the most active species for the decomposition of ciprofloxacin (CIP), levofloxacin (LF), and ofloxacin (OFX), respectively. In addition, the 6ZIF-67/ZIF-8 nanocomposite suggested its potential applications in Escherichia coli for growth inhibition zone, antibacterial activity, and decreased viability. Moreover, the stability test and decomposition pathway of CIP, LF, and OFX were also proposed. Finally, our study aims to enhance the efficiency and stability of ZIF-8@ZIF-67 nanocomposite and potentially enable its applications in antibiotic decomposition, antibacterial activities, and environmental remediation.

Green synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles and its efficiency in degradation of rifampicin antibiotic

In recent ages, green nanotechnology has gained attraction in the synthesis of metallic nanoparticles due to their cost-effectiveness, simple preparation steps, and environmentally-friendly. In the present study, copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) were prepared using Parthenium hysterophorus whole plant aqueous extract as a reducing, stabilizing, and capping agent. The CuO NPs were characterized via UV-Vis Spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), powder X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS). The UV-Vis spectra of CuO NPs showed a surface plasmonic resonance band to occur at 340 nm. FTIR analysis revealed the presence of secondary metabolites on the surface of CuO NPs, with a characteristic Cu-O stretching band being identified at 522 cm-1. Scanning electron micrographs and transmission electron micrographs showed that CuO NPs were nearly spherical, with an average particle of 59.99 nm obtained from the SEM micrograph. The monoclinic crystalline structure of CuO NPs was confirmed using XRD, and crystallite size calculated using the Scherrer-Debye equation was found to be 31.58 nm. DLS showed the presence of nanoparticle agglomeration, which revealed uniformity of the CuO NPs. Furthermore, the degradation ability of biosynthesized nanoparticles was investigated against rifampicin antibiotic. The results showed that the optimum degradation efficiency of rifampicin at 98.43% was obtained at 65℃ temperature, 50 mg dosage of CuO NPs, 10 mg/L concentration of rifampicin solution, and rifampicin solution at pH 2 in 8 min. From this study, it can be concluded that CuO NPs synthesized from Parthenium hysterophorus aqueous extract are promising in the remediation of environmental pollution from antibiotics. In this light, the study reports that Parthenium hysterophorus-mediated green synthesis of CuO NPs can effectively address environmental pollution in cost-effective, eco-friendly, and sustainable ways.

Prospective in vitro A431 cell line anticancer efficacy of zirconia nanoflakes derived from Enicostemma littorale aqueous extract

Biomedical applications of zirconia nanomaterials were limited in biological systems. In this research, 8-15 nm size zirconia nanoflakes (ZrNFs) were fabricated and their nature, morphology, and biocompatibility were evaluated. The synthesis was carried out using Enicostemma littorale plant extract as an effective reducing and capping agent. Physiochemical properties of prepared ZrNFs were characterized using diverse instrumental studies such as UV-vis spectrophotometer, Fourier-transform infrared, powder X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray, and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The XRD pattern confirmed the tetragonal phases of ZrNFs and the highest crystallite size of Zr0.02, Zr0.02, and Zr0.06 was 56, 50, and 44 nm, respectively. The morphology of samples was assessed using TEM. Electrophysiological effects of ZrNFs in the cellular interaction process were revealed by the slower rate of electron transfer results in CV demonstration. Biocompatibility of synthesized ZrNFs was studied on A431 human epidermoid carcinoma epithelial cells. The cell viability was increased with an increasing the concentration of nanoflakes up to 6.50-100 μg/mL. The cell viability and observed IC50 values (44.25, 36.49, and 39.62 μg/mL) reveals that the synthesized ZrNFs using E. littorale extract is found to be efficient toxic to A431 cancer cell lines.

Sunlight-driven photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin and organic dyes by biosynthesized rGO-ZrO2 nanocomposites

Aquatic ecology has been greatly threatened by the discharge of effluents of textile and antibiotic industries into natural waters. Herein, an efficient and easily recycled reduced graphene oxide/zirconium oxide nanocomposite has been synthesized using banana peel extract (abbreviated as rGO-ZrO₂ in this work). The X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electronic microscopy (FESEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were used to analyze the synthesized material. The as-prepared rGO-ZrO₂ nanocomposite was employed as a photocatalyst for the decomposition of rhodamine blue (RhB) and crystal violet (CV) dyes, and ciprofloxacin (CIP) antibiotic by illumination with direct sunlight. The RhB and CV were degraded to maximum extent of around 86 and 90%, respectively, over the rGO-ZrO₂ nanocomposite after exposure to direct sunlight for 120 min. On the other hand, the degradation of CIP was approximately 93.1% over the rGO-ZrO₂ nanocomposite in 240 min under same experimental conditions. Further studies were performed regarding the role of parameters like pH, catalyst dose, and scavengers, in order to understand the superiority of rGO-ZrO₂ nanocomposite in degrading organic pollutants. Moreover, the intermediate products and plausible CIP degradation mechanisms were examined using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Moreover, the catalyst was easily separated from the solution and demonstrated good stability and reusability. The RhB, CV, and CIP removal efficiency were 80%, 83%, and 88%, respectively, after five cycles.
