A new spirofluorene-based nonplanar PBI-dyad and its utilization in the film-based photo-production of singlet oxygen

Advances in Molecular Design and Photophysical Engineering of Perylene Bisimide-Containing Polyads and Multichromophores for Film-Based Fluorescent Sensors

Film-based fluorescent sensors (FFSs) represent an important chemistry technology for meeting the urgent needs of on-site and real-time analysis, thereby enabling significant applications in environmental and health monitoring. As the core of FFSs, innovative design of sensing fluorophores and their intrinsic excited-state-related response nature endow FFSs with superior sensing performances in an endless expansion. In this Perspective, we specifically focus on perylene bisimide (PBI)-containing polyads and multichromophores with rigid configuration and notable photochemical stability for developing high-performance FFSs. These nonplanar structures mitigate aggregation and create abundant gaps for the sake of mass transfer and availability of the sensing units in the adlayer of the sensing films. We also comprehensively discuss how to adjust electronic coupling governing the excited-state events by appropriate functionalization strategies, thus providing a plethora of valuable insights for the exploration of the structure-property relationships in these orchestrated molecular systems. Throughout this Perspective, we also identify opportunities for FFSs in the future developments.

Film Nanoarchitectonics of Pillar[5]arene for High-Performance Fluorescent Sensing: a Proof-of-Concept Study

Substrates play crucial roles for the sensing performances of fluorescent films owing to their effect on the formation of a fluorescent adlayer. However, no such film has been developed through synthesizing a substrate with a defined structure. We herein report a kind of self-standing, uniform, and thickness tunable pillar[5]arene-based nanofilms to serve as substrates for fabricating fluorescent sensing films. In comparison with a glass plate, the pillar[5]arene-based nanofilms can ensure spatial and electronic isolation of immobilized fluorophores and circumvent aggregation-caused quenching in a film state. For conceptual proof, a formic acid fluorescent sensing film was developed through simple loading of a fluorophore, a 4-azetidine-1,8-naphthalimide derivative of cholesterol (NA-Ch), onto the prepared nanofilm. Sensing performance studies demonstrated that the fluorescent film showed a sensitive, fast, and highly selective response to formic acid in air with a detection limit of lower than 2.8 mg m^-3 and a response time of less than 3 s. Moreover, the sensing is fully reversible and highly repeatable. Further studies showed that the film sensor can be used for fast determination of methanol acidity via vapor sampling. Clearly, innovation of substrates with defined structures can be taken as an effective and efficient way to develop new sensing films via combination with known fluorophores.

Resonance-Enhanced Two-Photon Absorption and Optical Power Limiting Properties of Three-Dimensional Perylene Bisimide Derivatives

Push-pull organic structures characterized by an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process and π-electron delocalization are potentially interesting luminescent materials. A series of three-dimensional o-carborane-containing perylene bisimide derivatives (PBIs) were synthesized, and their optical properties were systematically investigated to illustrate the stereo effect, especially on the two-photon absorption (2PA) and optical power limiting (OPL) properties. Open-aperture Z-scan curves showed that all four PBIs displayed strong and broad two-photon absorptivities based on the resonance-enhanced phenomenon. The maximum degenerate two-photon absorption cross section (δ_2PA) increased with the number of PBI substituents. The derivative CB-PBI possessed a δ_2PA value of ∼2400 GM at 650 nm, a significant enhancement in comparison with that of the parent PBI (∼719 GM), ascribed to the present stereo effect. When the aromatic-donating units changed from naphthyl and pyrenyl to PBI, the generated multidimensional intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) from the aromatic units to the o-carborane cage contributed to the 2PA processes. All of the fluorophores exhibited excellent optical power limiting (OPL) performances as well as a minimum limiting threshold of ∼4.98 mJ/cm² for CB-PBI. These significant results not only allow us to get deep insight into the nature of the fundamental stereo effect and nonlinear optical (NLO) response involved but also guide us toward the design of new multifunctional luminescent materials.

An O-Carborane Derivative of Perylene Bisimide-Based Thin Film Displaying both Electrochromic and Electrofluorochromic Properties

The widespread application in displays, information encryption, and sensors has boosted studies of electrochromic (EC) systems combining large contrast, fast response, high robustness, and low-cost properties. Herein, we report a film-type new EC system with a non-planar perylene bisimide-carborane derivative (PBI-CB) as the electroactive materials. It was revealed that the film demonstrated outstanding EC properties with response times of 1.18 and 0.94 s for the coloration and bleaching processes, respectively, large transmittance variation around 630 nm (45.7%), and superior stability for more than 200 coloration-bleaching cycles. Moreover, the film also showed precious electrofluorochromic (EFC) properties. The emission around 650 nm at the "on" state could be more than 24.5 times than that at the "off" state, and the response times of the off and on processes could reach 2.2 s and 4.3 s, respectively. Considering the facts that the film was fabricated via simple drop-coating, the EC/EFC operation was performed via a routine three-electrode system and the voltage applied is only -1.3 V, we believe that the EC/EFC system as developed would find applications in smart windows, information encryption, optoelectrical sensing, etc. In addition, the work could also pave the way for developing combined EC/EFC systems via employing known organic fluorophores as the electrochemical active materials, which are not only abundant in numbers but also solution-processable.

Anti-Sandwich Structured Photo-Electronic Wound Dressing for Highly Efficient Bacterial Infection Therapy

Photo-electronic devices based on reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation suffer a crucial limitation in wound treatment due to their sandwich structure, which prevents the contact of ROS with wound tissue. In this work, the first anti-sandwich structured visible-light/electricity dual-responsive wound dressing is constructed for treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), based on selenoviologen-appendant polythiophene (SeV²⁺ -PT)-containing polyacrylamide hydrogels. The new wound dressing is named an anti-sandwich structured photo-electronic wound dressing (PEWD). The unique structure of PEWD enables its use in synergistic electrodynamic and photodynamic therapy (EDT and PDT), providing rapid, on-demand, and sustained generation of ROS in situ via short-time light irradiation and/or wireless-controlled electrification. The PEWD possesses good flexibility, excellent biocompatibility, and fast response, as well as sustained ROS generation in a physiological environment. Animal experiments demonstrate effective ROS generation in 6 s under irradiation and electrification, inhibiting infection at an early stage, and substantially shortening the healing time of bacterial infection (to within 7 days). This proof-of-concept research holds great promise in developing new flexible PEWD, and novel strategies to improve wound treatment.
