Light enhanced proton conductivity in a terbium phosphonate photochromic chain complex

Ultrastable Lanthanide Metal-Organic Frameworks for Smartphone-Assisted Ratiometric Fluorescent Sensing of Toluenediamines and Tunable Luminescence

Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) have excellent optical properties and structural diversity, providing a unique platform for the development of fluorescent sensing and optical materials. In the work described herein, a series of isostructural 3D Ln-MOFs [Ln(L)(H2O)]·2H2O (Ln = Eu (1), Gd (2), Tb (3), H3L = 3,3',3″-[1,3,5-benzenetriyltris(carbonylimino)]tris-benzoate) are fabricated under solvothermal conditions. The good thermal, water, and acid-base stabilities of 3 are prerequisites for fluorescent sensing applications. 3 can be used as a ratiometric broad-spectrum fluorescent sensor for toluenediamines (TDAs) in real urine with the advantages of visualization, ultrasensitivity, and selectivity. Interestingly, a smartphone-assisted intelligent sensing platform manifests promising results for the detection of TDAs, providing a chance for further development of portable diagnostic tools. In addition, by tuning the ratios of Eu3+/Tb3+ and Eu3+/Gd3+/Tb3+, nine bimetallic-doped EuxTb1-x (x = 0.10-0.90, 4-12) and one trimetallic-doped Gd0.95Tb0.015Eu0.035 (13) were obtained. 4-12 exhibit a gradient of luminescent colors from yellow-green to pink with different ratios of Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions. Meanwhile, the trimetallic-doped Gd0.95Tb0.015Eu0.035 (13) shows near-white-light emission with a quantum yield of 8.76%. Interestingly, the inks made with 1-13 are invisible under ambient light but show visual color-tunable luminescence under a 254 nm UV lamp, which may facilitate their anti-counterfeiting applications.

Synergism of Light-Induced [4 + 4] Cycloaddition and Electron Transfer Toward Switchable Photoluminescence and Single-Molecule Magnet Behavior in a Dy4 Cubane

Molecular materials possessing switchable magneto-optical properties are of great interest due to their potential applications in spintronics and molecular devices. However, switching their photoluminescence (PL) and single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior via light-induced structural changes still constitutes a formidable challenge. Here, a series of cubane structures were synthesized via self-assembly of 9-anthracene carboxylic acid (HAC) and rare-earth ions. All complexes exhibited obvious photochromic phenomena and complete PL quenching upon Xe lamp irradiation, which were realized via the synergistic effect of photogenerated radicals and [4 + 4] photocycloaddition of the AC components. The quenched PL showed the largest fluorescence intensity change (99.72%) in electron-transfer photochromic materials. A reversible decoloration process was realized via mechanical grinding, which is unexpectedly in the electron-transfer photochromic materials. Importantly, an SMM behavior of the Dy analog was observed after room-temperature irradiation due to the photocycloaddition of AC ligands and the photogenerated stable radicals changed the electrostatic ligand field and magnetic coupling. Moreover, based on the remarkably photochromic and photoluminescent properties of these compounds, 2 demos were applied to support their application in information anti-counterfeiting and inkless printing. This work, for the first time utilizing the simultaneous modulation of photocycloaddition and photogenerated radicals in one system, realizes complete PL quenching and light-induced SMM behavior, providing a dynamical switch for the construction of multifunctional polymorphic materials with optical response and optical storage devices.

Series of Viologen-Based Metal-Organic Polyhedra with Photo/Electrochromic Behavior for Inkless Printing and UV Detection

The fabrication of molecular crystalline materials with fast, multistimuli-responsive behavior and the construction of the corresponding structure-activity relationship are of extraordinary significance for the development of smart materials. In this context, three multistimuli-responsive functional metal-organic polyhedra (MOP), {[Dy2(bcbp)3(NO3)1.5(H2O)7]·Cl4.2·(NO3)0.3·H2O}n (1), {[Dy2(bcbp)4(H2O)8]Cl6}n (2), and {[Eu2(bcbp)4(H2O)10]Cl6·H2O}n (3; bcbp = 1,1'-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium), were successfully prepared and characterized. All of the compounds exhibit rapid and reversible photochromic and electrochromic dual-responsive behaviors. Furthermore, benefiting from the well-defined crystal structure and different responsive behaviors, the photoinduced electron transfer (PIET) process and structure-activity relationship were explored. In addition, considering the excellent photochromic performance, function filter paper and smart organic glass were successfully prepared and used for ink-free printing and UV light detection.

A stable Mn(II) coordination polymer demonstrating proton conductivity and quantitative sensing of oxytetracycline in aquaculture

The construction and investigation of dual-functional coordination polymers (CPs) with proton conduction and luminescence sensing is of great significance in clean energy and agricultural monitoring fields. In this work, an Mn-based coordination polymer (Mn-CP), namely, [Mn0.5(HL)] (H2L = HOOCC6H4C6H4CH2PO(OH)OCH3), was hydrothermally synthesized. Mn-CP has a one-dimensional (1D) chain structure, in which uncoordinated -COOH groups can serve as potential sites for fluorescence sensing. Moreover, Mn-CP shows good water and pH stabilities, offering the feasibility for proton conduction and sensing applications. Mn-CP displays comparatively high proton conductivity of 1.07 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 368 K and 95% relative humidity (RH), which is promising for proton conduction materials. Moreover, it can serve as a repeatable, highly selective, and visualized fluorescence sensor for detecting oxytetracycline (OTC). More importantly, Mn-CP reveals an amazing quantitative sensing of OTC in actual samples such as seawater, aquaculture freshwater, soil infiltration solutions, and tap water. This work proves the excellent application potential of dual-functional CPs in the field of clean energy and environmental protection, especially for the fluorescence detection of antibiotics in aquaculture systems.

Controlled Assembly of a Dawson-like Antimoniotungstate-Supported Trefoil-type Trimer with Good Proton Conductivity Performance

With the excellent properties of POM in the field of proton conductivity, the preparation of POM-based proton-conductive materials has burst into life. Herein, an unprecedented Sb-templated all-inorganic trimer Na8H18.64[(SbW14O52)3(Sb2W6.12Ru5.88O18)]·85H2O (1), which is based on tetravacant Dawson-like [SbW14O52]17- blocks and exhibits a trefoil type with D3 symmetry, has been successfully designed and synthesized by the assembly of simple materials with a one-pot hydrothermal method under acidic conditions. Also, compound 1 is systematically characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, PXRD, ESI-MS, IR spectroscopy, UV-vis, elemental analysis, and TGA. Crystal structure data analysis demonstrates that compound 1 is constructed by a hexagonal prismatic heterometallic {Sb2W6.12Ru5.88O18} core and three equivalent {SbW14} units bridged through μ2-O atoms in periphery. Subsequently, further property experiments show that compound 1 exhibits high proton conductivity with a conductivity value (σ) of 3.07 × 10-2 S cm-1 at 75 °C and 80% relative humidity (RH). The activation energy of compound 1 evaluated by the Arrhenius plots is 0.22 eV, which indicates that the Grotthuss mechanism is dominant during the process of proton transfer.

Polyoxometalate/s-triazine hybrid heterostructures with ultrafast photochromic properties

As an emerging class of hybrid complexes, donor-acceptor (D-A) hybrid heterostructures, which combine the advantages of both organic and inorganic photoactive components, provide excellent platforms for the fabrication of photochromic materials with enhanced photo-responsive performances. Herein, four novel hybrid heterostructures, namely H3TPT·(PW12O40)·2NMP (1), (H1.5TPT)2·(PW12O40) (2), (H3TPT)2·(SiW12O40)·2Cl·2MeCN (3), and H3TPT·(HPMo12O40)·Cl·3NMP (4) (TPT is tri(4-pyridyl)-s-triazine, NMP is N-methylpyrrolidone), have been synthesized and characterized. Benefitting from the strong interactions (anion-π interactions) and matching electron energy levels between the donors and acceptors, some of them exhibited ultrafast photochromic behaviour even up to 1 second. Furthermore, based on experimental and theoretical calculations, the plausible PIET process and structure-activity relationship have been discussed in detail.

Dual-Functional Eu-Metal-Organic Framework with Ratiometric Fluorescent Broad-Spectrum Sensing of Benzophenone-like Ultraviolet Filters and High Proton Conduction

The construction of attractive dual-functional lanthanide-based metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) with ratiometric fluorescent detection and proton conductivity is significant and challenging. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) Eu-MOF, namely, [Eu4(HL)2(SBA)4(H2O)6]·9H2O, has been hydrothermally synthesized with a dual-ligand strategy, using (4-carboxypiperidyl)-N-methylenephosphonic acid (H3L = H2O3PCH2-NC5H9-COOH) and 4-sulfobenzoic acid monopotassium salt (KHSBA = KO3SC6H4COOH) as organic linkers. Eu-MOF showed ratiometric fluorescent broad-spectrum sensing of benzophenone-like ultraviolet filters (BP-like UVFs) with satisfactory sensitivity, selectivity, and low limits of detection in water/ethanol (1:1, v/v) solutions and real urine systems. A portable test paper was prepared for the convenience of actual detection. The potential sensing mechanisms were thoroughly analyzed by diversified experiments. The synergistic effect of the forbidden energy transfer from the ligand to Eu3+, the internal filtration effect (IFE), the formation of a complex, and weak interactions between the KHSBA ligand and BP-like UVFs is responsible for the ratiometric sensing effect. Meanwhile, Eu-MOF displayed relatively high proton conductivity of 2.60 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 368 K and 95% relative humidity (RH), making it a potential material for proton conduction. This work provides valuable guidance for the facile and effective design and construction of multifunctional Ln-MOFs with promising performance.

Ultrahigh Proton Conductivities of Postmodified Hf(IV) Metal-Organic Frameworks and Related Chitosan-Based Composite Membranes

Recently, researchers have focused on preparing and studying proton exchange membranes. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are candidates for composite membrane fillers due to their high crystallinity and structural characteristics, and Hf-based MOFs have attracted our attention with their high porosity and high stability. Therefore, in this study, Hf-based MOFs were doped into a cost-effective chitosan matrix as fillers to fabricate composite films having excellent proton conductivity (σ). First, the nanoscale MOFs Hf-UiO-66-(OH)₂ (1) and Hf-UiO-66-NH₂ (2) were chemically modified by a ligand design strategy to obtain SA-1 and CBD-2 bearing free -COOH units. The proton conductivities of SA-1 and CBD-2 under optimal test conditions reached 1.23 × 10^-2 and 0.71 × 10^-2 S cm^-1. After that, we prepared composite membranes CS/SA-1 and CS/CBD-2 by the casting method; tests revealed that the introduction of MOFs improved the stabilities and σ values of the membranes, and their best σ could reach above 10^-2 S cm^-1 under 100 °C/98% RH. Further structural characterization and activation energy calculation revealed the conductive mechanism of the composite films. This investigation not only proposes a novel chemical modification method for optimizing the σ of MOFs but also promotes the development of MOF-doped composite membranes and provides a basis for future applications of MOFs in fuel cells.

One-Dimensional Chain Viologen-Based Lanthanide Multistimulus-Responsive Materials with Photochromism, Photoluminescence, Photomagnetism, and Ammonia/Amine Vapor Sensing

In this work, a series of novel multistimulus-responsive lanthanide coordination polymers {[LnL(H₂O)₄]Cl₃·3H₂O}_n (Ln = Dy, Tb, Eu) constructed using a dicarboxylic acid viologen derivative L (L = N,N'-4,4'-bipyridiniodipropionate) and LnCl₃·6H₂O were prepared. All materials showed positive responses to UV light, and the photochromic phenomena accompanied by significant photoquenching of photoluminescence could be observed through a photoelectron transfer mechanism. Strikingly, the Dy analogue displayed photomagnetic behavior, as well as responded positively to small molecules of inorganic ammonia/organic amines. Furthermore, the good photoresponsive and ammonia/amine vapor-responsive properties of the Dy-based material were further fulfilled in dual-function papers involving erasable inkless printing and visual amine detection applications. This work aims to advance the development of multistimulus-responsive multifunctional materials incorporating viologen derivates and versatile lanthanide ions and further enriches the research in this field.

Two Stable Cd-MOFs as Dual-Functional Materials with Luminescent Sensing of Antibiotics and Proton Conduction

Construction and investigation of dual-functional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with luminescent sensing and proton conduction provide widespread applications in clean energy and environmental monitoring fields. By selecting a phosphonic acid ligand 4-pyridyl-CH₂N(CH₂PO₃H₂)₂ (H₄L) and coligand 2,2'-biimidazole (H₂biim), two cadmium-based MOFs [Cd_1.5(HL)(H₂biim)_0.5] (1) and (H₄biim)_0.5·[Cd₂(L)(H₂biim)Cl] (2) with different structures and properties have been hydrothermally synthesized by controlling reaction temperature. Based on the excellent thermal and chemical stabilities, and good luminescent stabilities in water solution, 1 and 2 can serve as luminescent sensors of chloramphenicol (CAP) with different quenching constant (K_SV) values and detection limits (LODs) in water, simulated environmental system, and real fish water system. Meanwhile, different sensing effects and possible sensing mechanisms are analyzed in detail. Moreover, 1 and 2 can also serve as good proton-conducting materials. The proton conductivities can reach up to 1.41 × 10^-4 S cm^-1 for 1 and 1.02 × 10^-3 S cm^-1 for 2 at 368 K and 95% relative humidity (RH). Among them, 2 shows better luminescent sensing and proton conduction performance than 1, which indicates that different crystal structures have a great impact on the properties of MOFs. Through the discussion of the relationship between structures and properties in detail, the possible reasons for the differences in properties are obtained, which can provide theoretical guidance for the rational design of this kind of dual-functional MOFs in the future.

Photoresponsive proton conduction in Zr-based metal-organic frameworks using the photothermal effect

A highly stable and porous MOF [Zr₂(H₄TPPP)(OH/F)₂]·xH₂O (1) containing a metal-free porphyrin-phosphonate ligand is reported. It shows high proton conductivity of 1.2 × 10^-3 S·cm^-1 at 25 °C and 95% RH, a photothermal effect over a wide spectral range from UV-vis to NIR, and photo-enhanced and switchable proton conductivity.

Photoactive Anthracene-9,10-dicarboxylic Acid for Tuning of Photochromism in the Cd/Zn Coordination Polymers

Electron transfer photochromic materials with photo-triggered radicals have received huge interest from chemists due to their potentialities in anticounterfeiting, displays, energy conversion, and information storage. However, utilizing the sole carboxylic acid to synthesize novel electron transfer photochromic species is still confronted with huge challenges. Herein, an acentric three-dimensional network Cd₂(ADC)₂(DMF)₂(H₂O) (1; ADC = anthracene-9,10-dicarboxylate; DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) and a two-dimensional layer Zn(ADC)(H₂O)·DMA·H₂O (2; DMA = N,N-dimethylacetamide) were synthesized and characterized via a photoactive H₂ADC ligand. Both compounds exhibited electron transfer photochromism with the formation of radical photoproducts at the solid state, which was revealed by IR, UV-Vis absorption, photoluminescence and electron spin resonance spectra, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Density functional theory calculations for 1 showed that the coloration process is a metal-assisted ligand-to-ligand electron transfer process between adjacent ADC molecules, and photogenerated stable radicals are delocalized over the ADC components. Compared with 1, the shorter distances between ADC components via coordination bonds promoted 2 to exhibit a higher coloration efficiency and larger quantity of photogenerated radicals. Furthermore, both compounds showed unexpected radical-actuated photochromism in aqueous solution. This work showed that the carboxylic acid ligands, without viologen acceptors, could construct the electron transfer photochromic complexes, showing a novel kind of ligand for the design of hybrid photochromic materials.

Donor-Acceptor Hybrid Heterostructures: An Emerging Class of Photoactive Materials with Inorganic and Organic Semiconductive Components

Just as the heterojunctions in physics, donor-acceptor (D-A) heterostructures are an emerging class of photoactive materials fabricated from two semiconductive components at the molecular level. Among them, D-A hybrid heterostructures from organic and inorganic semiconductive components have attracted extensive attention in the past decades due to their combined advantages of high stability for the inorganic semiconductors and modifiability for the organic semiconductors, which are particularly beneficial to efficiently achieve photoinduced charge separation and transfer upon irradiations. In this review, by analogy with the heterojunctions in physics, a definition of the D-A heterostructures and their general design and synthetic strategies are given. Meanwhile, the D-A hybrid heterostructures are focused on and their recent advances in potential applications of photochromism, photomodulated luminescence, and photocatalysis summarized.

Zero-dimensional Hybrid Antimony Halide with Intrinsic Cyan Light Emission

Recently, zero-dimensional (0D) hybrid metal halides have attracted intensive attention with wide applications in solid-state lighting and display diodes. Herein, by using the facile wet-chemistry method, we prepared one new 0D hybrid antimony halide of [HMHQ] 2 SbCl 5 ·2H 2 O (MHQ = 2-methyl-8-hydroxyquinoline) based on discrete [SbCl 5 ] 2- unit. Remarkably, the bulk crystals of [HMHQ] 2 SbCl 5 ·2H 2 O exhibit strong cyan light emission with promising photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 18.92%. Systematical studies disclose that the cyan emission is mainly derived from the radiative recombination within conjugated organic cation. Benefiting from the promising luminescent performance, this 0D antimony halide can be utilized as an excellent down-conversion light emitting luminescent material to assemble white light-emitting diodes with high color rendering index (CRI) of 90.2.

Turn-up Luminescent Sensing of Ultraviolet Radiation by Lanthanide Metal-Organic Frameworks

Here, we report a series of two-dimensional lanthanide metal-organic frameworks Ln-DBTPA (where DBTPA = 2,5-dibromoterephthalic acid and Ln = Tb (1), Eu (2), or Gd (3)) showing a unique turn-up responsiveness toward ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The luminescence enhancement was derived from the accumulated radicals that can promote the intersystem crossing process. The compound 1 shows an ultralow detection limit of 9.1 × 10^-9 J toward UV radiation, representing a new type of luminescent UV detectors.

Photochromic Semiconductive Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework (HOF) with Broadband Absorption

Semiconductors with broadband photoelectric response have important practical needs in many aspects such as solar energy conversion, photocatalysis, and photodetection. We synthesized the first photochromic semiconductive hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF), [H₂(bpyb)](H₂PO₄)₂·2H₂O (1), using the polycyclic viologen cation [H₂(bpyb)] (bpyb = 1,4-bis(tetrapyridyl)benzene). After 1 s of xenon lamp irradiation, compound 1 showed a visible color change from the initial yellowish to dark purple after continuous irradiation. The photoinduced radical product has an absorption band covering 200-1700 nm, which is wider than the absorption ranges of silicon and perovskites. It produced photocurrent when irradiated with a xenon lamp or a laser (355, 532, or 808 nm). The on/off ratio of the current (I_irr/I_dark) can be as high as 300 times under the irradiation of the 808 nm laser with a power of 1.9 W cm^-2. In addition, under the 808 nm light source, the on/off ratio of 1B is 35 times that of 1A.

Two Heterometallic Nanoclusters [DyIII4NiII8] and [DyIII10MnIII4MnII2]: Structure, Assembly Mechanism, and Magnetic Properties

A full understanding of the assembly mechanisms of coordination complexes is of great importance for a directional synthesis under control. We thus explored here the formation mechanisms of the two new heterometallic nanoclusters [Dy^III₄Ni^II₈(μ₃-OH)₈(L)₈(OAc)₄(H₂O)₄]·3.25EtOH·4CH₃CN (1) and [Dy^III₁₀Mn^III₄Mn^II₂O₄(OH)₁₂(OAc)₁₆(L)₄(HL)₂(EtOH)₂]·2EtOH·2CH₃CN·2H₂O (2) with different cubane-based squarelike ring structures, which were obtained from the reactions of 4-bromo-2-[(2-hydroxypropylimino)methyl]phenol (H₂L) with Dy(NO)₃·6H₂O and the transition metal salt Ni(OAc)₂·4H₂O or Mn(OAc)₂·4H₂O. The high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HRESI-MS) tests showed that the skeletons of clusters 1 and 2 have a high stability under the measurement conditions for HRESI-MS. The intermediates formed in the reaction courses of clusters 1 and 2 were tracked using time-dependent HRESI-MS, which helped to determine the proposed hierarchical assembly mechanisms for 1 (H₂L → NiL → Ni₂L₂ → Ni₃L₄ → Ni₄L₄ → DyNi₄L₅ → Dy₂Ni₆L₆ → Dy₃Ni₆L₆ → Dy₃Ni₇L₇ → Dy₄Ni₈L₈) and 2 (H₂L → MnL → DyMnL → DyMn₂L → Dy₂Mn₂L_x → Dy₈Mn₂L₂ → Dy₁₀Mn₂L₂ → Dy₁₀Mn₆L_x and H₂L → DyL → Dy₄L₂ → Dy₆L₂ → Dy₈Mn₂L₂ → Dy₁₀Mn₂L₂ → Dy₁₀Mn₆L_x). This is one of the rare examples of investigating the assembly mechanisms of 3d-4f heterometallic clusters. Magnetic studies indicated that the title complexes both show slow magnetic relaxation behaviors and cluster 1 is a field-induced single-molecule magnet.

Modulating the structure and photochromic performance of hybrid metal chlorides with nonphotochromic 1,10-phenanthroline and its derivative

Hybrid photochromic materias (HPMs), especially crystalline HPMs (CHPMs), have been widely investigated due to their feasibility in maintaining the advantages of each constituent and genearating captivating photomodulated functionality. Metal-organic complexes (MOCs), as promising candidates for fabricating CHPMs, have attracted the interest of researchers. The molecular predesign of ligands plays a crucial role in yielding MOC-based CHPMs with tunable photochromic functionality. Hitherto, a great majority of CHPMs are driven by photosensitive ligands. However, the complicated synthesis and high cost of photosensitive ligands obviously prevent the macro-synthesis and future application of these CHPMs. Thus, it is indispensable to explore novel branches of CHPMs. Herein, we report a series of photochromic solid materials bearing modulated photochromic properties by hybridizing metal chlorides with a nonphotosensitive coplanar dipyridine unit 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and its derivative 5-chloro-1,10-phenanthroline (5-Cl-phen). The resulting hybrids, [ZnCl₂(phen)] (1), [CdCl₂(phen)] (2), [PbCl₂(phen)] (3), [ZnCl(H₂O)(5-Cl-phen)₂]Cl·2H₂O (4), [Cd₂Cl₄(5-Cl-phen)₂] (5) and [Pb₂Cl₄(5-Cl-phen)₂] (6), exhibit distinct structures from the isolated molecular complexes (1 and 4) to the hybrid chain (2, 3, 5 and 6) because of the distinct coordination mode of central metal ions and chloride ions. After photo-irradiation with a Xe-lamp, all complexes, as expected, exhibited apparent color change because of the photoinduced electron transfer (ET) between coordinated chloride ions (Cl^-) as electron donors (EDs) and the coordinated coplanar phen and 5-Cl-phen species as electron acceptors (EAs). More importantly, the photochromic performance of the title complexes could be modulated by phen and 5-Cl-phen. This study provides a general and facile way for modulating the structure and photochromic performance of hybrid metal chlorides with phen or phen-based derivatives under the synergy of crystalline engineering strategy and ET mechanism.

Dual-Functional Metal-Organic Framework for Luminescent Detection of Carcinoid Biomarkers and High Proton Conduction

It remains a challenge to exploit dual-functional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for applications, including luminescence detection and proton conduction. With the deliberate selection of the bifunctional organic ligand 5-sulfoisophthalic acid monosodium salt (NaH₂bts), and the phosphonic acid ligand N,N'-piperazine (bismethylenephosphonic acid; H₄L), a robust three-dimensional (3D) noninterpenetrating dual-functional MOF, [Tb(H₂L)(H₂bts)(H₂O)]·H₂O (1), has been synthesized hydrothermally. On the basis of the excellent thermal and chemical as well as superior luminescence stabilities in water and solutions with different pHs, 1 can serve as the simple, rapid, and highly selective and sensitive luminescence detection of the carcinoid biomarkers 5-hydroxytryptamine (HT) and its metabolite 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid (HIAA) with detection limits of nanomolar magnitude in water and in simulated blood plasma and urine systems. Due to the change in the signals that could be readily differentiated by the naked eye under a UV lamp, a portable test paper has been developed. The probable quenching mechanisms are discussed in detail. In addition, a great number of hydrogen-bonding networks are formed among the uncoordinated carboxylic oxygen atoms, sulfonate oxygen atoms, protonated nitrogen atoms, and water molecules, which provide potential proton-hopping sites for proton conduction, leading to a maximum proton conductivity of 2.3 × 10^-4 S cm^-1 at 368 K and 95% relative humidity. The above results suggest that rationally designed dual-functional MOFs can open an avenue for the development of occupational diagnostic tools and alternative energy technology.

An electron-deficient naphthalene diimide-based metal-organic framework for detecting electron-rich molecules through photo-/chemo-induced chromism

A novel naphthalene diimide-based metal-organic framework (MOF) {[Zn(3-DPMNI)_0.5(NDC)]·3DMF} (1@DMF), (H₂NDC = 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid, DPMNI = N,N'-bis(3-pyridylmethyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalene diimide, DMF = N,N'-dimethylformamide), has been synthesized, which shows a 3D pillar-layer architecture built of carboxylate layers and naphthalene diimide pillars. The compound exhibits outstanding photochromic performance due to photoinduced electron transfer (ET) between the electron-rich guest molecules and electron-deficient host framework (host-guest ET). Of note, the host framework of 1 cannot show a macroscopic color change owing to the absence of the ET pathway. Nevertheless, it exhibits discriminative photochromic behavior in the presence of electron-rich solvents, which is mainly attributed to different electron-donating abilities of guest solvents and distinct interfacial contacts of electron donors/acceptors. Furthermore, the MOF can also show discriminative ET chemochromic response to different sizes and shapes of organic amines, which can be potentially used for the visual detection of electron-rich organic amines, especially n-butylamine (n-BUA).
