BaYOBO3: A deep-ultraviolet rare-earth oxy-borate with a large second harmonic generation response

Assembly of π-Conjugated [B3O6] Units by Mer-Isomer [YO3F3] Octahedra to Design a UV Nonlinear Optical Material, Cs2YB3O6F2

Achieving the extreme balance of the key performance requirements is the crucial to breakthrough the application bottleneck for nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. Herein, by assembly of the π-conjugated [B3O6] functional species with the aid of structure-directing property of mer-isomer [YO3F3] octahedra, a new ultraviolet (UV) NLO material, Cs2YB3O6F2 with aligned arrangement of coplanar [B3O6] groups has been synthesized. The polar material exhibits the rare coexistence of the largest second harmonic generation response of 5.6×KDP, the largest birefringence of 0.091 at 532 nm, the shortest Type I phase-matching down to 200.5 nm and deep-ultraviolet transparency among reported acentric rare-earth borates with [B3O6] groups. Remarkably, benefiting from the enhanced bonding force among functional units [B3O6], a firm three-dimensional framework is constructed, which facilitates the growth of large crystals. This can be proved by a block shape crystal with dimensional of 6×5×4 mm3, indicating that it was a promising UV NLO crystal. This work provides a powerful strategy to design UV NLO materials with good performances.

Cd4InO(BO3)3: A New Nonlinear Optical Crystal Exhibiting Strong Second Harmonic Generation Effect and Moderate Birefringence

A new noncentrosymmetric cadmium indium borate, Cd4InO(BO3)3 (CIBO) has been successfully developed via a standard solid-state reaction. Its crystal structure was confirmed by the single crystal X-ray diffraction, which shows that CIBO belongs to the non-centrosymmetric and polar space group Cm. Its structure contains the distorted InO6 and CdOn (n = 6, 8) polyhedra, which link together by sharing an edge or corner to build a three dimensions framework with BO3 triangles accommodated in tunnels. Benefiting from the approximately parallel configuration of BO3 triangles, CIBO exhibited a strong second harmonic generation (SHG) effect (3 × KDP), and moderate birefringence of 0.077@1064 nm. Further optical and thermal characterizations suggest that CIBO possesses a wide transparent window and good thermal stability. Theoretical calculation reveals that the macroscopic SHG coefficients of CIBO results from the synergistic effect of the parallel arrangement of BO3 groups and d10 Cd2+ cation.

Designing A New Infrared Nonlinear Optical Material, β-BaGa2 Se4 Inspired by the Phase Transition of the BaB2 O4 (BBO) Crystal

Infrared nonlinear optical (IR NLO) crystals play a significant role in the development of IR laser technology. But rationally designing a new IR NLO crystal remains a huge challenge because of the unpredictability of inorganic structures. Herein, inspired by phase transformation of the famous BaB₂ O₄ (BBO) crystal, a temperature-induced centrosymmetric (CS) to noncentrosymmetric (NCS) transformation approach is employed in CS BaGa₂ Se₄ to uncover a new NCS ternary chalcogenide, β-BaGa₂ Se₄ which can exhibit the well-balanced NLO properties, including moderate phase-matching SHG response (≈0.6×AgGaS₂ ), high LDT (10×AgGaS₂ ), and large birefringence (Δn=0.18 in the visible region). Therefore, β-BaGa₂ Se₄ will be a promising IR NLO crystal. The analysis for the structure-property relationship shows that the excellent NLO properties of β-BaGa₂ Se₄ mainly originate from edge-sharing GaSe₄ tetrahedral chains, which are different from B₃ O₆ groups in β-BBO and respect a new direction for the design of IR NLO crystals. So, we believe that the current research provides not only a new IR NLO crystal but also some insights for the design of new IR NLO crystals.

Ba4Ca(B2O5)2F2: π-conjugation of B2O5 in the planar pentagonal layer achieving large second harmonic generation of pyro-borate

The nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals that can expand the wavelength of the laser to the deep-ultraviolet (DUV) region by the cascaded second harmonic generation (SHG) are of current research interest. It is well known that borates are the most ideal material class for the design of new DUV NLO crystals owing to the presence of good NLO genes, e.g., BO3 or B3O6 groups. However, the NLO pyro-borates with the B2O5 dimers as the sole basic building units are still rarely reported owing to their small SHG responses. In this communication, by constructing a planar pentagonal [Ca(B2O5)]∞ layer, the NLO pyro-borate Ba4Ca(B2O5)2F2 with a large SHG response (∼2.2 × KDP, or ∼7 × α-Li4B2O5) and a DUV transparent window has been designed and synthesized. The first-principles calculations show that the large SHG response of Ba4Ca(B2O5)2F2 mainly originates from the better π-conjugation of the coplanar B2O5 dimers in the [Ca(B2O5)]∞ layer. In addition, the planar pentagonal pattern in the [Ca(B2O5)]∞ layer provides an ideal template for designing the new DUV NLO crystals, apart from those in known DUV borates, e.g., the [Be2BO3F2]∞ layer in KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF).
