A review of the design of load-carrying exoskeletons

Effectiveness of a passive military exoskeleton in off-loading weight during static and dynamic load carriage: A randomised cross-over study

BACKGROUND

Load carriage imposes high physical stresses on the human body, increasing the risk of injuries. This study assessed the effectiveness of a passive military exoskeleton in off-loading the weight placed on the body during heavy load carriage under static standing and dynamic walking conditions.

METHODS

Eight full-time regular personnel of the Singapore Armed Forces enrolled in the study. Static loading tests included nine trials of 10-s quiet standing while carrying different loads (0-55 kg) with and without the exoskeleton. For dynamic loading, participants walked on a treadmill on flat, inclined, and declined surfaces while carrying two different loads (25 kg, 35 kg) with and without the exoskeleton. In-shoe normal ground reaction forces (GRF) were recorded during quiet standing and treadmill walking. Differences in total force with and without the exoskeleton during static loading were compared using Wilcoxon one-sample signed ranked tests against zero (no weight off-load) as a reference. Statistical parametric mapping test was used to compare the walking in-shoe GRF-time series with and without exoskeleton use for each load and surface condition.

RESULTS

Exoskeleton use was effective in off-loading loads of 2.3-13.5 kg during static quiet standing but the response varied substantially across loads and among the participants. Statistical analysis revealed no meaningful differences in the walking in-shoe GRF with and without exoskeleton use. The results were largely consistent across flat, inclined, and declined surfaces, and both 25-kg and 35-kg loads.

CONCLUSIONS

The passive military exoskeleton was effective in off-loading some load from the human body during static quiet standing but not dynamic walking on flat and sloped surfaces. The varied response across loads and participants calls for better design and fitting of the military exoskeleton to individual users.

A Real-Time Control Method for Upper Limb Exoskeleton Based on Active Torque Prediction Model

Exoskeleton rehabilitation robots have been widely used in the rehabilitation treatment of stroke patients. Clinical studies confirmed that rehabilitation training with active movement intentions could improve the effectiveness of rehabilitation treatment significantly. This research proposes a real-time control method for an upper limb exoskeleton based on the active torque prediction model. To fulfill the goal of individualized and precise rehabilitation, this method has an adjustable parameter assist ratio that can change the strength of the assist torque under the same conditions. In this study, upper limb muscles' EMG signals and elbow angle were chosen as the sources of control signals. The active torque prediction model was then trained using a BP neural network after appropriately extracting features. The model exhibited good accuracy on PC and embedded systems, according to the experimental results. In the embedded system, the RMSE of this model was 0.1956 N·m and 94.98%. In addition, the proposed real-time control system also had an extremely low delay of only 40 ms, which would significantly increase the adaptability of human-computer interactions.

Exoskeletons: A challenge for development

The development of exoskeletons is currently a lengthy process full of challenges. We are proposing a framework to accelerate the process and make the resulting exoskeletons more user-centered. The needed accomplishments in science are described in an effort to lay the foundation for future research projects. Since the early 2000s, exoskeletons have been discussed as an emerging technology in industrial, medical, or military applications. Those systems are designed to support people during manual tasks. At first, those systems lacked broad acceptance. Many models found their niches in ongoing developments and more diverse systems entering the market. There are still applications that are in dire need of such assistance. Due to the lack of experience with body-worn robotics, the development of such systems has been shaped by trial and error. The lack of legacy products results in longer development times. In this paper, a process to generate a framework is presented to display the required research to enable future exoskeleton designers. Owing to their proximity to the user's body, exoskeletons are highly complex systems that need sophisticated subsystems, such as kinematic, control, interaction design, or actuators, to be accepted by users. Due to the wide variety of fields and high user demands, a synchronized multidisciplinary effort is necessary. To achieve this, a process to develop a modular framework for exoskeleton design is proposed. It focuses on user- and use-case-centered solutions for matching kinematics, actuation, and control. To ensure the usefulness of the framework, an evaluation of the incorporated solutions is required.
