Concentrations and gas-particle partitioning of PCDD/Fs in the urban air of Dalian, China

Gas/particle partitioning of PCDD/Fs: Distributions and implications for available models

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) are semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) existing in the atmosphere in the gas and particulate phase, remain persistent for a long time and pose a high risk to the environment and human health. In this study, PCDD/F measurements were made in an urban area between June 2022 and April 2023. In order to understand the fate of PCDD/Fs, the gas/particle (G/P) partitioning was studied. Although various models have been developed to determine the G/P partitioning of SVOCs, only logKp-logPL0, Junge-Pankow and Harner-Bidleman models are generally used for PCDD/Fs. In this study, nine different models (Junge-Pankow, Harner-Bidleman, Dachs-Eisenreich, Li-Ma-Yang, pp-LFER, mp-pp-LFER, QSPR, logKp-logPL0, logKp-logKOA) were employed to determine the G/P partitioning. To the best of our knowledge, pp-LFER, mp-pp-LFER and QSPR models were evaluated for PCDD/Fs for the first time in this study. In addition, the performance of the models within the equilibrium (EQ), non-equilibrium (NE) and maximum partitioning (MP) domain was investigated for PCDD/Fs for the first time in this study. Accordingly, models based on absorption in the EQ domain, adsorption in the NE domain and adsorption and absorption mechanisms in the MP domain were found to be effective in explaining the G/P transitions. It was determined that there is no equilibrium situation in the G/P partitioning. The Junge-Pankow, pp-LFER, Li-Ma-Yang and QSPR models under-predicted the particle fraction values while the other models showed a high prediction profile. The Li-Ma-Yang model showed the closest results to the measured particle fraction values, and it determined that deposition mechanisms are of non-negligible importance in the G/P partitioning of PCDD/Fs. One of the new models, the pp-LFER model, has shown remarkable success at high logKOA values. The mp-pp-LFER model, which overestimated the contribution of the adsorption mechanism, showed a very high prediction profile compared to the measured values.

Urban air PCDD/Fs: Atmospheric concentrations, temporal changes, gas/particle partitioning, possible sources and cancer risks

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) are pollutants of concern due to their toxic effects. No active sampling study on PCDD/Fs has been conducted in Bursa. This study aimed to fill this gap by measuring PCDD/F levels in the region. Accordingly, the samples were collected from an urban area in Bursa, covering four seasons between June 2022 and April 2023. The total (gas+particulate) ambient air concentrations were between 312.23 and 829.80 fg/m3 (mean: 555.05 ± 173.62 fg/m3). In terms of toxic equivalents (TEQ), the average concentration was 43.29 ± 9.18 fg WHOTEQ/m3. Based on the concentration values obtained, cancer and non-carcinogenic risk values of PCDD/Fs were calculated for three different age groups. The results indicated negligible health risks for all age groups. In addition, a seasonal assessment was also made and it was observed that PCDD/F concentration values varied with the ambient air temperatures. In general, higher values were measured in colder months compared to warmer months. This was probably due to the additional sources and adverse meteorological conditions. Moreover, the gas/particle partitioning of PCDD/Fs was investigated in detail. The average gas and particulate phase concentrations for PCDD/Fs were 101.81 ± 20.77 and 453.24 ± 172.50, respectively. It was found that an equilibrium state was not reached in the gas/particle partitioning. Two different gas/particle partition models based on adsorption and absorption mechanisms were compared, and the absorption model gave more consistent predictions. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was employed to identify the possible PCDD/F sources. The results indicated that the region was influenced by vehicle emissions, residential heating, organized industrial zones and metal recycling facilities. In addition, 72-hour backward air mass trajectory analyses were performed to understand the long-range transported air masses. However, it was found that the transported air masses did not significantly affect the concentration values measured in the sampling site.

Characteristics of PCDD/Fs in PM2.5 from emission stacks and the nearby ambient air in Taiwan

This study aimed to find the characteristics of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in fine particulate matter from different stationary emission sources (coal-fired boiler, CFB; municipal waste incinerator, MWI; electric arc furnace, EAF) in Taiwan and the relationship between PM_2.5 and PM_2.5-bound PCDD/Fs with Taiwanese mortality risk. PM_2.5 was quantified using gravimetry and corresponding chemical analyses were done for PM_2.5-bound chemicals. Mortality risks of PM_2.5 exposure and PCDD/Fs exposure were calculated using Poisson regression. The highest concentration of PM_2.5 (0.53 ± 0.39 mg/Nm³) and PCDD/Fs (0.206 ± 0.107 ng I-TEQ/Nm³) was found in CFB and EAF, respectively. Higher proportions of PCDDs over PCDFs were observed in the flue gases of CFB and MWI whereas it was reversed in EAF. For ambient air, PCDD/F congeners around the stationary sources were dominated by PCDFs in vapor phase. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis found that the sources of atmosphere PCDD/Fs were 14.6% from EAF (r = 0.81), 52.6% from CFB (r = 0.74), 18.0% from traffic (r = 0.85) and 14.8% from MWI (r = 0.76). For the dioxin congener distribution, PCDDs were dominant in flue gases of CFB and MWI, PCDFs were dominant in EAF. It may be attributed to the different formation mechanisms among wastes incineration, steel-making, and coal-burning processes.

PCDD/Fs emissions from secondary copper production synergistically controlled by fabric filters and desulfurization

The effects of fabric filters and desulfurization systems during secondary copper smelting on polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) concentrations, emission coefficients, and profiles were studied in an oxygen-rich smelting furnace and an anode furnace. In the anode furnace, the toxic equivalent (TEQ) concentration ranges were 0.106-1.04 ng World Health Organization (WHO)-TEQ/m³ at the fabric filters inlet and 0.027-0.17 ng WHO-TEQ/m³ at the outlet. For the oxygen-rich smelting furnace, the TEQ concentration ranges were 1.21-1.93 and 0.010-0.019 ng WHO-TEQ/m³ at the desulfurization system inlet and outlet, respectively. The TEQs in the outlet stack gases of the desulfurization system from the anode furnace were 0.0041-0.016 ng WHO-TEQ/m³. It is likely that PCDD/Fs that were taken away from the stack gases were adsorbed by the fly ash and gypsum. Solid residues were the dominant release routes for PCDD/Fs. PCDD/Fs congener and homologue profiles of stack gases from different smelting stages were similar. The contributions of more chlorinated homologues from the anode furnace decreased observably after the stack gases passed through the fabric filters. However, the desulfurization process did not greatly change the PCDD/Fs homologue profiles. Overall, both the fabric filters and desulfurization systems showed excellent removal efficiencies for PCDD/Fs in the stack gases, which reduced the TEQ emissions to well below the 0.5 ng WHO-TEQ/m³ to achieve standard discharge.

Modeling gas/particle partitioning of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the atmosphere: A review

Gas/particle (G/P) partitioning of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), is an important atmospheric process due to its significance in governing atmospheric fate, wet/dry deposition, and long-range atmospheric transport. In this article, eight models published to predict the G/P partitioning of PBDEs are reviewed. These eight models are used to calculate the G/P partitioning quotient and particulate phase fraction of selected PBDE congeners. A comparison of the predicted results from the eight models with monitoring data published by several research groups worldwide leads to the following conclusions: 1) when the values of the logarithm of the octanol-air partition coefficient (logK_OA) fall below 11.4 (the first threshold value, logK_OA1), all 8 models perform well in predicting the G/P partitioning of PBDEs in the atmosphere, and 2) when logK_OA is >11.4, and especially above 12.5 (the second threshold value, logK_OA2), the Li-Ma-Yang model, a steady-state model developed based on wet and dry deposition of the particles (Li et al., Atmos. Chem. Phys. 2015; 15:1669-1681), shows the best performance with highest conformity to the measurements for selected PBDEs (94.4 ± 1.6% data points within ±1 log unit). Overall, the Li-Ma-Yang model appears to capture the most important factors that affect the partitioning of PBDEs between gaseous and particular phases in the atmosphere.

A review of levels and profiles of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in different environmental media from China

This review provides a summary of the levels and profiles of PCDD/Fs throughout China, as reported in peer reviewed literatures since 1997. The literature shows that PCDD/Fs are widespread in various environmental media including air, water, sediment, and soil. PCDD/Fs concentrations in air were relatively low in most regions, with only a few areas considered polluted. Many studies reported seasonal trends, with higher and lower concentrations in winter and summer, respectively. We analyzed the factors affecting the concentrations of dioxins in air and summarized the causes of seasonal changes. As hydrophobic organic compounds, PCDD/Fs readily accumulate in sediments. The distribution of dioxins in sediment in Bohai Sea area was mainly introduced and the factors affecting concentrations of dioxins were studied. The levels of dioxins in soil in different regions varied greatly, with higher levels in areas close to pollution sources. We examined the dioxins concentrations in soil in places where the levels were very low (including the Tibet Plateau and other remote areas), contaminated areas, and other areas. Apart from the contaminated areas, the dioxins concentrations in soil were low. The results of the relatively low number of studies that have investigated PCDD/Fs in water have reported no obvious pollution in some waters, apart from Dongting Lake. PCDD/Fs levels across China are similar to those worldwide. Point sources, mainly related to local geographic, economic, and historical factors, were the most common source of contamination. E-waste dismantling and chemical production has the greatest impact on PCDD/Fs in different media.

Levels and gas-particle partitioning of hexabromocyclododecanes in the urban air of Dalian, China

The concentrations of α-, β-, and γ-hexabromocyclododecane diastereomers (HBCDs) in gas phase and particulate phase of Dalian urban air, China, were monitored from September 2016 to August 2017 with high-volume active sampler. The total concentration of ∑HBCDs (gas phase + particulate phase) ranged from 15.47 to 43.57 pg m^-3, with an average of 27.07 pg m^-3, and 73.39-96.76% of the total HBCDs were found in the particulate phase. No matter in gas phase or in particulate phase, α-HBCD was the predominant component in all, and there was a good negative correlation between the relative contribution of α-HBCD to ∑HBCDs and that of γ-HBCD to ∑HBCDs. The average ratios of the air concentration of α-HBCD to γ-HBCD were comparable with those found in decorative polystyrene, which indicated that HBCDs in outdoor air of Dalian probably came from indoor air and ventilation air from inside of buildings coupled with the already present contamination in background air. There were clear seasonal differences in the HBCD concentrations. Spearman's rank correlation analysis between the concentrations of HBCDs with meteorological parameters was conducted. The exposure risk of HBCDs was evaluated, which illustrated that the estimated exposure of HBCDs via the outdoor air in Dalian was well below the reference doses (200 ng kg^-1 bw day^-1) derived by the US National Research Council.

Concentrations and inhalation risk assessment of short-chain polychlorinated paraffins in the urban air of Dalian, China

The concentrations of short-chain polychlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) in the urban air of Dalian, China, were monitored from March to October 2010 and from September to October 2016 with active high-volume sampler. The total concentration of SCCPs (particulate phase + gas phase) ranged from 15.12 to 66.44 ng m^-3, with an average of 30.26 ng m^-3 in 2010, and 65.30 to 91.00 ng m^-3, with an average of 78.15 ng m^-3 in 2016. Hexa-chlorinated dodecane and hexa-chlorinated undecane are the predominant components in the gas phase, while octa-chlorinated undecane and hepta-chlorinated tridecane are dominant in the particulate phase. In 2010, 82.57-97.16% of the total SCCPs were found in the gas phase, except that in winter, where 63.11% of the total SCCPs were in the particulate phase; the air concentrations of SCCPs in gas phase were summer > autumn > spring > winter, which was positively correlated with the change of the average ambient temperature, while it was the contrary in particulate phase. In autumn, the gas phase and the total air concentration of SCCPs in 2016 were 2.57 times more than that in 2010, while the congener group patterns of SCCPs were similar. Spearman's rank correlation analysis between the concentrations of SCCPs with meteorological parameters was conducted. The gas-particle distribution was examined through the relationship of the logarithm of the gas-particle partition coefficient with that of the subcooled vapor pressure and the octanol-air partitioning coefficient of SCCPs. Results indicated that the absorption mechanisms contributed more to the partitioning process. The exposure risk of SCCPs was evaluated, which illustrated that the estimated exposure of SCCPs via the outdoor environment in Dalian did not exceed the health concern threshold of the European risk assessment.

Airborne persistent toxic substances (PTSs) in China: occurrence and its implication associated with air pollution

In recent years, China suffered from extensive air pollution due to the rapidly expanding economic and industrial developments. Its severe impact on human health has raised great concern currently. Persistent toxic substances (PTSs), a large group of environmental pollutants, have also received much attention due to their adverse effects on both the ecosystem and public health. However, limited studies have been conducted to reveal the airborne PTSs associated with air pollution at the national scale in China. In this review, we summarized the occurrence and variation of airborne PTSs in China, especially in megacities. These PTSs included polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), halogenated flame retardants (HFRs), perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals. The implication of their occurrence associated with air pollution was discussed, and the emission source of these chemicals was concluded. Most reviewed studies have been conducted in east and south China with more developed economy and industry. Severe contamination of airborne PTSs generally occurred in megacities with large populations, such as Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing. However, the summarized results suggested that industrial production and product consumption are the major sources of most PTSs in the urban environment, while unintentional emission during anthropogenic activities is an important contributor to airborne PTSs. It is important that fine particles serve as a major carrier of most airborne PTSs, which facilitates the long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT) of PTSs, and therefore, increases the exposure risk of the human body to these pollutants. This implied that not only the concentration and chemical composition of fine particles but also the absorbed PTSs are of particular concern when air pollution occurs.
