Analysis of Risk-Structured Vaccination Model for the Dynamics of Oncogenic and Warts-Causing HPV Types

A co-infection model for HPV and syphilis with optimal control and cost-effectiveness analysis

A co-infection model for human papillomavirus (HPV) and syphilis with cost-effectiveness optimal control analysis is developed and presented. The full co-infection model is shown to undergo the phenomenon of backward bifurcation when a certain condition is satisfied. The global asymptotic stability of the disease-free equilibrium of the full model is shown not to exist when the associated reproduction number is less than unity. The existence of endemic equilibrium of the syphilis-only sub-model is shown to exist and the global asymptotic stability of the disease-free and endemic equilibria of the syphilis-only sub-model was established, for a special case. Sensitivity analysis is also carried out on the parameters of the model. Using the syphilis associated reproduction number, [Formula: see text], as the response function, it is observed that the five-ranked parameters that drive the dynamics of the co-infection model are the demographic parameter [Formula: see text], the effective contact rate for syphilis transmission, [Formula: see text], the progression rate to late stage of syphilis [Formula: see text], and syphilis treatment rates: [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] for co-infected individuals in compartments [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], respectively. Moreover, when the HPV associated reproduction number, [Formula: see text], is used as the response function, the five most dominant parameters that drive the dynamics of the model are the demographic parameter [Formula: see text], the effective contact rate for HPV transmission, [Formula: see text], the fraction of HPV infected who develop persistent HPV [Formula: see text], the fraction of individuals vaccinated against incident HPV infection [Formula: see text] and the HPV vaccine efficacy [Formula: see text]. Numerical simulations of the optimal control model showed that the optimal control strategy which implements syphilis treatment controls for singly infected individuals is the most cost-effective of all the control strategies in reducing the burden of HPV and syphilis co-infections.

Mathematical analysis of a two-sex Human Papillomavirus (HPV) model

A two-sex deterministic model for Human Papillomavirus (HPV) that assesses the impact of treatment and vaccination on its transmission dynamics is designed and rigorously analyzed. The model is shown to exhibit the phenomenon of backward bifurcation, caused by the imperfect vaccine as well as the re-infection of individuals who recover from a previous infection, when the associated reproduction number is less than unity. Analysis of the reproduction number reveals that the impact of treatment on effective control of the disease is conditional, and depends on the sign of a certain threshold unlike when preventive measures are implemented (i.e. condom use and vaccination of both males and females). Numerical simulations of the model showed that, based on the parameter values used therein, a vaccine (with 75% efficacy) for male population with about 40% condom compliance by females will result in a significant reduction in the disease burden in the population. Also, the numerical simulations of the model reveal that with 70% condom compliance by the male population, administering female vaccine (with 45% efficacy) is sufficient for effective control of the disease.

A male-female mathematical model of human papillomavirus (HPV) in African American population

We introduce mathematical human papillomavirus (HPV) epidemic models (with and without vaccination) for African American females (AAF) and African American males (AAM) with ''fitted'' logistic demographics and use these models to study the HPV disease dynamics. The US Census Bureau data of AAF and AAM of 16 years and older from 2000 to 2014 is used to ''fit'' the logistic demographic models. We compute the basic reproduction number, R0, and use it to show that R0 is less than 1 in the African American (AA) population with or without implementation of HPV vaccination program. Furthermore, we obtain that adopting a HPV vaccination policy in the AAF and AAM populations lower R0 and the number of HPV infections. Sensitivity analysis is used to illustrate the impact of each model parameter on the basic reproduction number.

Voluntary vaccination strategy and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases

In this work, we investigate the spread and control of sexually transmitted diseases when a game-theory based vaccination strategy is involved. An individual's decision on vaccination uptake may follow a cost-benefit analysis since the individual obtains immunity against the disease from the vaccination and, at the same time, may have some perceived side effects. Evolutionary game theory is integrated into the epidemic model to reveal the relationship between individuals' voluntary decisions on vaccination uptake and the spread and control of such diseases. We show that decreasing the perceived cost of taking vaccine or increasing the payoff from social obligation is beneficial to controlling the disease. It is also shown how the "degree of rationality" of males and females affects the disease spread through the net payoff of the game. In particular, individual awareness of the consequences of the disease on the infectives also contributes to slowing down the disease spread. By analyzing an asymmetric version of our evolutionary game, it is shown that the disease is better controlled when individuals are more sensitive to fitness differences when net payoff is positive than when it is negative.
