Systematic Review: Patient and Public Involvement of Children and Young People in Mental Health Research

OBJECTIVE

Patient and public involvement (PPI) is an essential ethical component in mental health research, and represents a major opportunity to improve translational mental health research. The goals of this review were to (1) provide a comprehensive overview of empirical research focusing on PPI of children and young people (CYP) in mental health research studies; (2) evaluate the results with CYP and parents of those affected; and (3) derive recommendations for PPI of CYP in future mental health research studies.

METHODS

Based on an extensive literature review following the PRISMA guidelines, studies including CYP (age range: 0-21 years) in mental health research were identified and examined along a two-part analysis process considering their usability for mental health research. The conclusions drawn from the studies concerning CYP involvement were summarized and recommendations derived.

RESULTS

Overall, 19 articles reported PPI of CYP (age range: 10-26 years) in mental health research and were included for further analyses. The integrated studies differed in the type of PPI, and in the way the participation and involvement processes were presented.

CONCLUSION

Progress has been made in engaging CYP in mental health research, but there is a need for international standards, operationalization, and evaluation measures. Future research should go beyond merely reporting the PPI process itself. It should clearly indicate how and to what extent feedback from these PPI members was incorporated throughout the research process.

How digital fabrication technologies within digitalized innovation environments lead to participative aid development

Purpose

Facilities such as FabLabs and Makerspaces are characterized by the facilities' wide range of digital fabrication technologies as well as facilities' interdisciplinary user base and collaborative problem solving and product development. These possibilities can also hold great potential for people with disabilities who have a specific need for assistive technology. Since there are no established models of such participatory development processes (PDP) within digitalized innovation environments (DIE), this study intends to provide a comprehensive understanding of these processes along with the influencing factors.

Design/methodology/approach

Through a cooperation with a Thalidomide Association, various PDPs were accompanied within a DIE and interviews were conducted with 16 stakeholders involved. Hereby, the perspective of thalidomide-affected people (5) as well as the supporting makers (6) and experts (5) were taken into account. Through a subsequent structured analysis, various dimensions as well as relevant influencing factors could be identified.

Findings

In total, 33 paraphrases could be formed in 8 categories and four dimensions concerning the PDPs investigated. In addition, 17 paraphrases on potentials and challenges could be extracted through generalization.

Originality/value

Due to findings' holistic approach, the findings form an empirical basis for further research into this still very young research topic and represent a first step toward theory building. By the applicability of the identified influencing factors an important contribution can be made to the supply of aids and the inclusion of people with disabilities.

[Quality management and development in primary prevention and health promotion: status, challenges, and perspectives]

In the past three decades, quality development in primary prevention and health promotion have developed significantly. A major contribution to this has been their legal anchoring. The reintroduction of prevention and health promotion in the statutory health insurance and the Prevention Act gave this development an additional boost. The discourse that had already begun in the run-up to this, involving numerous researchers and stakeholders from different fields of prevention and health promotion, contributed to an increased understanding of central aspects of quality development. Comprehensive procedures for quality assurance and development are available for prevention and health promotion. In addition, recommendations for action, checklists, and instruments, for example, have been edited and are easily accessible for all four quality dimensions - planning, structural, process, and outcome quality. Certifications and quality seals for interventions and health promoting institutions are available.However, none of these procedures is used comprehensively and continuously. The fields in prevention and health promotion differ significantly with regard to the implementation of quality assurance. Obstacles are, among other things, insufficient human and financial resources with simultaneous discontinuity and intra-facility quality management systems. There is a need for action to further develop the implementation of quality on site, especially in the community setting, and to better integrate quality assurance into existing structures. Qualification, intensive exchange, and small-scale prevention reporting should promote quality development.

Professional Characteristics of Health Promotion: A Scoping Review of the German and International Literature

Objective: This scoping review investigates current developments in the professional characteristics of health promotion (HP) with a focus on the German speaking part of Europe. The conceptualization of HP is a prerequisite for progressing HP professionalization and clarifying the interconnectedness between HP and Public Health. Methods: The search strategy was informed by sociological professionalization theories. Original publications were included in a content-based analysis. Results: Ninety publications (37 original publications) were identified in the review. The results are summarized in categories based on professional characteristics: 1) profession, 2) ethics, 3) education/training 4) competencies, and 5) quality. The professionalization of HP regarding the professional characteristics is less developed in the German compared to the international literature. Conclusion: The mixed findings emphasize the relevance of a common HP conceptualization. The HP core competencies, which have been developed by the International Union for Health Promotion and Education must be further promoted. A strong HP workforce within Public Health strengthens the HP status in policy contexts and society and its contribution to promoting health and tackling social inequalities in health.

[Prevention of overweight in children: Standard setting documents]

BACKGROUND

The quality of preventive measures is an essential precondition for their success. A current objective of health policy in Germany is to find the criteria for quality, as well as to process and discuss them systematically with relevant stakeholders.

OBJECTIVES

An assessment of the quality standards of overweight prevention in children was the main objective of the study. Scientific articles and standard-setting documents of purchasers and providers of measures were analyzed.

METHODS

A literature search with the meta-database MEDPILOT yielded 19 relevant papers, which were processed using a content analysis. An internet-based inquiry using the search engine Google led to 62 standard-setting documents for further analysis.

RESULTS

There is hardly any German literature on the intersection of quality standards and primary overweight prevention in children. Only six of the standard-setting documents have a focus on overweight prevention in children. Overall, there is a wide range of criteria. The documents of the central actors have wide intersection and show a common understanding of quality. Nevertheless, the documents do not relate to each other and it is not yet clear which documents guide the actions for prevention practice.

CONCLUSIONS

To develop common standards, mutual recognition is needed between actors of the field, science and politics. The scientific discourse needs to interrelate better studies of primary prevention with overweight research as well as quality assessment.
