Football fans' emotional attachment to their clubs as a predictor of weight loss in a prevention programme for men with obesity

Data about which factors in lifestyle interventions facilitate weight loss (WL) success in men is still scarce. The Football Fans in Training (FFIT) programme in Germany attracts men with overweight and facilitates meaningful weight reduction. The goal of this study was to evaluate the possible impact of the fans' emotional attachment to their favourite football clubs on achieving at least 5% WL among the male-only participants. All 791 FFIT intervention participants of 2017 and 2018 were included in the study. We performed two separate logistic regression analyses: (a) baseline values of several participant characteristics as predictors of a 5% WL and (b) change scores of participants' health behaviour characteristics from the course start to end as predictors of the 5% WL. In addition, both models included the Emotional Attachment to a Sports Team (EAST). Analyses were based on the intention-to-treat principle. Higher EAST at baseline was associated with WL success, as was higher WL self-efficacy, lower score in vegetable intake and higher score in food high on carbohydrates. In the second analysis, EAST, an increase in fruit intake, vegetable intake, whole-grain intake and steps per day, as well as a reduction of fatty food intake, were associated with 5% WL success. The predictors are mostly explorative and limited to correlations. The results indicate that EAST was an independent predictor of WL success in the participating football fans. This understanding might be used for tailoring future interventions in sports or similar settings.

Fußball – neue Wege in der Prävention und Behandlung des Typ-2-Diabetes

Über die Hälfte der Bevölkerung in westlichen Ländern ist übergewichtig, und nahezu jeder Vierte ist adipös. In den nächsten Jahren wird es deshalb zu einem enormen Anstieg der Zahl an nicht übertragbaren Erkrankungen wie Diabetes, kardiovaskuläre Erkrankungen und Krebs kommen. Eine ausgewogene Ernährung, begleitet von regelmäßiger Bewegung, ist entscheidend bei der Prävention der Entwicklung und des Fortschreitens nicht übertragbarer Erkrankungen. Gesundheitsfördernde Programme besitzen eine große Bedeutung bei der langfristigen Verbesserung des Gesundheitsstatus unserer Bevölkerung, jedoch nehmen insbesondere Männer selten an gesundheitsfördernden Programmen teil. Deshalb gilt es nach neuen Wegen zu suchen, um effizienter Menschen mit einem erhöhten Risiko zu erreichen. Fußball verfügt über ein großes Potenzial, Menschen und vor allem Männer mit einem erhöhten Risiko für nicht übertragbare Erkrankungen, die üblichen gesundheitsfördernden Maßnahmen ablehnend gegenüberstehen, für die Teilnahme an Gesundheitsprogrammen zu gewinnen. Für ältere Spieler ist Walking Football eine neue Fußball-Variante mit einem geringeren Risiko für Verletzungen und eine körperliche Überlastung. Die vorliegende Arbeit gibt einen Überblick über die metabolischen Auswirkungen von Freizeitfußball und insbesondere Walking Football sowie Maßnahmen zur Gesundheitsförderung, die von professionellen Fußballvereinen angeboten werden, bei Menschen mit einem erhöhten Risiko für oder mit bereits bestehenden nicht übertragbaren Erkrankungen, wie insbesondere Typ-2-Diabetes.

ACTION for Men: Study Protocol of a Community Capacity Building Intervention to Develop and Implement Gender-Sensitive Physical Activity Programs for Men 50 Plus

Introduction: Capacity building for health promotion is a relevant precondition for sustainable, health-related changes in community settings. So far, there are few evidence-based recommendations about how to implement and evaluate community capacity building approaches. ACTION for men (A4M) is a project designed to build and evaluate capacities for health promotion in three rural communities in Bavaria, Germany, via a participatory approach including multiple community stakeholders. The project specifically aims at improving physical activity (PA) in men over 50 years of age (50 plus).

Methods and Analysis: As a strategy to build the communities' capacities, we set up stakeholder groups in so far two communities. Those stakeholder groups will be facilitated over a period of 1–3 years. In regular meetings, the group members will be motivated to actively participate in planning and implementing PA programs for men 50 plus. The facilitation will systematically address key domains of community capacity (e.g., critical awareness, problem assessment, resource mobilization). The evaluation of the capacity building processes will be carried out using a mixed-methods design. Evaluation instruments consist of structured documentations and face-to-face interviews with stakeholder group participants (and drop-outs) as well as a pre-post-test using a standardized questionnaire in order to detect activity-related changes in men 50 plus from the involved communities. In community three, we will conduct the same procedure with a delay of 6 months.

Discussion: Building community capacity for health promotion programs is the primary aim in A4M, and thus differs from previous research in which capacity is mostly a means to an end or an “incidental” result of a health promotion program. Therefore, A4M is expected to deliver important findings about how to implement and evaluate capacity building processes for health promotion, as well as how to address physical activity in community settings.

Short term effects of a weight loss and healthy lifestyle programme for overweight and obese men delivered by German football clubs

Numbers of obese and overweight people continue to grow in Germany as they do worldwide. Men are affected more often but do less about it and few weight loss services attract men in particular. To evaluate the effectiveness of a men-only weight loss programme, Football Fans in Training (FFIT), delivered by football clubs in the German Bundesliga, we did a non-randomized trial with a waiting list control group. Participants' data were collected between January 2017 and July 2018. FFIT is a 12-week, group-based, weight loss programme and was delivered in stadia and facilities of 15 professional German Bundesliga clubs. Inclusion criteria were age 35-65 years, BMI ≥ 28 and waist circumference ≥100 cm. Clubs recruited participants through Social Media, E-Mail and match day advertisement. 477 German male football fans were allocated to the intervention group by order of registration date at their respective clubs. 84 participants on the waiting list were allocated to the control group. Primary outcome was mean difference in weight loss with treatment condition over time as independent variable. We performed a multilevel mixed-effects linear regression analysis. Results were based on Intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis with Multiple Imputation. After 12 weeks, the mean weight loss of the intervention group adjusted for club, course and participants' age was 6.24 kg (95% CI 5.82-6.66) against 0.50 kg (-0.47-1.49) in the comparison group (p < 0.001). The results indicate that Football Fans in Training effectively helped German men to reduce their weight and waist circumference.
