Fast fronto-parietal cortical dynamics of conflict detection and context updating in a flanker task

Investigation of frequency components embedded in EEG recordings underlying neuronal mechanism of cognitive control and attentional functions

Attentional cognitive control regulates the perception to enhance human behaviour. The current study examines the atltentional mechanisms in terms of time and frequency of EEG signals. The cognitive load is higher for processing local attentional stimulus, thereby demanding higher response time (RT) with low response accuracy (RA). On the other hand, the global attentional mechanisms broadly promote the perception while demanding a low cognitive load with faster RT and high RA. Attentional mechanisms refer to perceptual systems that afford and allocate the adaptive behaviours for prioritizing the processing of relevant stimuli based on the local and global features. The early sensory component of C1, which was associated with the local attentional mechanism, showed higher amplitudes than the global attentional mechanisms in parieto-occipital regions. Further, the local attentional mechanisms were also sustained in N2 and P3 components increasing higher amplitude in the left and right hemispheric sides of temporal regions (T7 and T8). Theta band frequency had shown higher power spectrum density (PSD) values while processing local attentional mechanisms. However, the significance of other frequency bands was noticeably minute. Hence, integrating the attentional mechanisms in terms of ERP and frequency signatures, a hybrid custom weight allocation model (CWAM) was built to assess and predict the contribution of insignificant channels to significant ones. The CWAM model was formulated based on the computational linear regression derivatives. All the derivatives are computationally derived the significant score while channelizing the hierarchical performance of each channel with respect to the frequent and deviant occurrences of global-local stimulus. This model enables us to configure the neural dynamicity of cognitive allocation of resources within the different locations of the human brain while processing the attentional stimulus. CWAM is reported to be the first model to evaluate the performance of the non-significant channels for enhancing the response of significant channels. The findings of the CWAM model suggest that the brain's performance may be determined by the underlying contribution of the non-significant channels.

Frontal two-electrode transcranial direct current stimulation protocols may not affect performance on a combined flanker Go/No-Go task

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been tested to modulate cognitive control or response inhibition using various electrode montages. However, electrode montages and current polarities have not been systematically compared when examining tDCS effects on cognitive control and response inhibition. In this randomized, sham-controlled study, 38 healthy volunteers were randomly grouped into receiving one session of sham, anodal, and cathodal each in an electrode montage that targeted either the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) or the fronto-medial (FM) region. Participants performed a combined flanker Go/No-Go task during stimulation. No effect of tDCS was found in the DLPFC and FM groups neither using anodal nor cathodal stimulation. No major adverse effects of tDCS were identified using either montage or stimulation type and the two groups did not differ in terms of the reported sensations. The present study suggests that single-session tDCS delivered in two two-electrode montages might not affect cognitive control or response inhibition, despite using widely popular stimulation parameters. This is in line with the heterogeneous findings in the field and calls for further systematic research to exclude less reliable methods from those with more pronounced effects, identify the determinants of responsiveness, and develop optimal ways to utilize this technique.

Resting-state functional connectivity of social brain regions predicts motivated dishonesty

Motivated dishonesty is a typical social behavior varying from person to person. Resting-state fMRI (rsfMRI) is capable of identifying unique patterns from functional connectivity (FC) between brain regions. Recent work has built a link between brain networks in resting state to dishonesty in Western participants. To determine and reproduce the relevant neural patterns and build an interpretable model to predict dishonesty, we analyzed two conceptually similar datasets containing rsfMRI data with different dishonesty tasks. Both tasks implemented the information-passing paradigm, in which monetary rewards were employed to induce dishonesty. We applied connectome-based predictive modeling (CPM) to build a model among FC within and between four social brain networks (reward, self-referential, moral, and cognitive control). The CPM analysis indicated that FCs of social brain networks are predictive of dishonesty rate, especially FCs within reward network, and between self-referential and cognitive control networks. Our study offers an conceptual replication with integrated model to predict dishonesty with rsfMRI, and the results suggest that frequent motivated dishonest decisions may require the higher engagement of social brain regions.

Pushing to the Limits: What Processes during Cognitive Control are Enhanced by Reaction-Time Feedback?

To respond as quickly as possible in a given task is a widely used instruction in cognitive neuroscience; however, the neural processes modulated by this common experimental procedure remain largely elusive. We investigated the underlying neurophysiological processes combining electroencephalography (EEG) signal decomposition (residue iteration decomposition, RIDE) and source localization. We show that trial-based response speed instructions enhance behavioral performance in conflicting trials, but slightly impair performance in nonconflicting trials. The modulation seen in conflicting trials was found at several coding levels in EEG data using RIDE. In the S-cluster N2 time window, this modulation was associated with modulated activation in the posterior cingulate cortex and the superior frontal gyrus. Furthermore, in the C-cluster P3 time window, this modulation was associated with modulated activation in the middle frontal gyrus. Interestingly, in the R-cluster P3 time window, this modulation was strongest according to statistical effect sizes, associated with modulated activity in the primary motor cortex. Reaction-time feedback mainly modulates response motor execution processes, whereas attentional and response selection processes are less affected. The study underlines the importance of being aware of how experimental instructions influence the behavior and neurophysiological processes.
