From Ampesie to French fries: systematising the characteristics, drivers and impacts of diet change in rapidly urbanising Accra

Drivers of consumer food choices of multinational corporations' products over local foods in Ghana: a maximum difference scaling study

INTRODUCTION

The fundamental transformation of food systems and retail environments in low-income countries is influencing consumers' food choices and dietary habits in unfavourable directions through the consumption of highly processed, energy-dense foods, predominantly manufactured by multinational food corporations. This study aims to identify the principal factors driving consumers' preference for multinational foods over local foods in the urban Accra region of Ghana.

METHOD

This cross-sectional survey involving a random sample of 200 consumers conducted in March/April 2023 using interviewer-administered questionnaires employed a maximum difference scaling approach to investigate the drivers of urban Ghanaian consumer food choices for multinational food corporations' products over local foods. The maximum difference scaling modelling analysis utilized in this study identifies the primary drivers of multinational food corporations' product preferences and the associated trade-offs.

RESULT

The study discovered that food quality and safe packaging, perceived healthiness, taste and flavour, and nutritional value were the most significant factors driving consumer preference for multinational food corporations' products over local foods in Ghana. The criterion food quality and safe packaging had the significantly highest utility than all other attributes in terms of consumer preference for products/meals from multinational food corporations over local foods.

CONCLUSION

The results of this study provide significant contributions to the existing body of research, as previous studies have not identified these factors as primary drivers of multinational food products. Public health authorities and nutritionists can use the study's findings to implement targeted quality assurance measures in local markets and to address the drivers in health education campaigns.

A Systematic Review of the Bidirectional Association Between Consumption of Ultra-processed Food and Sleep Parameters Among Adults

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

We summarized research on the bidirectional association between intake of ultra-processed food (UPF) and sleep.

RECENT FINDINGS

Sleep contributes to cardiometabolic health in part via food intake patterns. Restricting sleep increases intakes of high-carbohydrate/high-fat foods, a profile representative of UPF. This systematic review covers the association of UPF intake, as an exposure or an outcome, and sleep. UPF was defined as NOVA Group 4. MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched through April 2023 for epidemiological studies with general-population adult samples. Fifteen studies met the inclusion criteria; all were cross-sectional, published between 2016 and 2023, with samples from Brazil (n = 8), Spain (n = 2), Italy (n = 1), the UK (n = 1), Paraguay (n = 1), Iran (n = 1) and China (n = 1). Thirteen studies examined UPF intake as the exposure whereas two tested UPF intake as the outcome. UPF intakes were determined using food frequency questionnaires (73%) or 24-h recalls (27%). Two studies assessed sleep via accelerometry; the remaining studies relied on self-reports of sleep quality, duration, anxiety-induced insomnia, and napping, with 60% using a single question. The average methodological quality across the studies was deemed "fair". Six of the 13 studies that examined UPF consumption as the exposure revealed inverse associations with sleep outcomes in adjusted (n = 5) or bivariate (n = 1) analyses. Both studies addressing UPF consumption as the outcome and sleep as the exposure showed significant inverse associations. Evidence for UPF-sleep associations is accumulating, although sleep assessment limitations are apparent. This review can provide impetus for research using comprehensive and validated sleep measures and nudge policymakers towards refining dietary guidelines worldwide.

Ultraprocessed Foods and Cancer in Low-Middle-Income Countries

Low middle income countries (LMICs) are the predominant contributors to global cancer-related mortality and are projected to bear the greater share of the global cancer burden in the next few decades. Among other factors, lifestyle changes have been linked to the rising incidence of cancer in these countries. As one of the keys to a healthy lifestyle, a balanced diet plays a major role in the preservation of health. Globalization and rapid urbanization have prompted a paradigm shift in various aspects of daily life in LMICs; the influence on dietary choices has been particularly noticeable. Studies show a concerning rise in the sale and consumption of ultraprocessed foods in these countries. In addition to hyperpalatability, this trend has been attributed to various other factors including convenience, availability, economic considerations, and marketing strategies. Although several studies from LMICs recognize and recommend the need for effective public health measures to reduce the consumption of these foods, findings from certain studies suggest that established public health strategies occasionally fail in the real-world scenario. Barriers to effective policymaking also contribute to the prevailing dietary trends. This review of studies from the LMIC setting demonstrates the current problem, limitations of established public health measures, and the complexities associated with effective policymaking. In view of the threat posed to cancer risk, there is an urgent need to curb the consumption of ultraprocessed foods in LMICs. National policymakers therefore need to circumnavigate the challenges effectively to ensure timely achievement of the United Nations sustainable development goals.

Diet change and sustainability in Indigenous areas: characteristics, drivers, and impacts of diet change in Gunayala, Panama

Many Indigenous communities around the world have been experiencing rapid and profound diet changes. This case report uses a Sustainability Science lens to understand the characteristics of diet change in Indigenous Gunas communities of Panama, as well as its drivers and sustainability impacts. We use primary information collected through interviews with 30 experts and 232 household surveys in three Gunas islands  characterised by different levels of development, western influence, and cultural erosion. We observe a rapid westernization of diets that has been mainly driven by closer interaction with tourists and the Panamanian society, as well as broader development processes. However, this diet change has a series of intersecting sustainability impacts related to food security, health, and socio-cultural and environmental change. It is necessary to understand the intersection of these phenomena when designing programs and interventions that seek to prevent or mitigate negative diet changes in Gunayala, and other  Indigenous contexts more broadly.
