Synthesis, magnetic anisotropy and optical properties of preferred oriented zinc ferrite nanowire arrays

Zinc ferrite nanoparticles from industrial waste for Se (IV) elimination from wastewater

The presence of high concentrations of selenium ions in wastewater is considered an environmental problem. However, the mechanism of selenium ions (Se (IV)) removal by the adsorption process has not been investigated in-depth so far. Also, the recovery and conversion of the industrial waste materials into valuable materials is a vital issue. Therefore, in this study, zinc ferrite nanopowders are economically synthesized from steel-making wastes by co-precipitation method for investigating as adsorbents of selenium species. The produced nanopowders were annealed at 150, 300, 500, and 850 °C for 5 h to scrutinize the impact of annealing temperature on their crystallite size. The compositional, optical, and magnetic features of the nanopowders were defined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-Vis. spectrophotometer along with vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Optical absorbance spectra were found characteristic due to the electronic structure of Fe³⁺ (3d⁵) considering the C_3v local symmetry of Fe³⁺ ions. The prepared nanopowders demonstrated good adsorption capacity toward selenium ions (43.67 mg/g at pH 2.5) from an aqueous medium. Adsorption data were found fitting to Freundlich isotherm model. Thus, ZnFe₂O₄ can be recommended to effectively eliminate selenium ions from aqueous solutions.

Impact of dysprosium doped (Dy) zinc ferrite (ZnFe2o4) nanocrystals in photo- fenton exclusion of recalcitrant organic pollutant

The issue of effluent, especially organic colorants from several manufacturing units overlays an immense delinquent of the current epoch owing to its effect on oncogenic health hazards. Thus, Rare Earth Metal dysprosium (Dy) doped Zinc Ferrite (ZnFe₂O₄) were as-synthesized by a facile co-precipitation technique as an effectual nano photocatalyst intended to the amputation of these noxious dyes. The structural, functional, optical, magnetic, and degradation properties of this RE (Dy³⁺) doped ions were investigated using various characterizations, such as crystallite size (D) and several parameters (cation distribution, oxygen positional parameters, and bond length) were determined using XRD (X-ray diffraction) and it was found that as the dy³⁺ ion concentration increases the speck size decreased and the grain size remained within nano regime, which intern affects the surface area. From BET analysis it was found that on increasing the doping concentration, the surface area increases which pave a substantial role in the photo-Fenton activity. By using FT-IR (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy) various functional parameters (elastic, interionic bonds, ion distribution, etc.) were determined. Raman spectra had no extra peak formation which is seen to have pure phase formation of the as-synthesized samples. HR-TEM (High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy analysis were done to determine the nature of the sample, the as-synthesized magnetic samples exhibit a polycrystalline formation with cubical agglomeration. The magnetic property was very significant for x = 0.10 concentration. As-synthesized (Fe_0.9064Zn_0.0936) [Fe_1.0936Dy_0.1Zn_0.8064] O₄) exhibits a momentous photo - Fenton activity against MB (Methylene blue), its removal efficiency was found to be 97.3% after 45 min. Also, this spinel ferrite acts as a magnetic recyclable catalyst even after 5 cycles with an insignificant lessening of elements and photo-Fenton activity.

Highly efficient visible light driven photocatalytic activity of zinc/ferrite: Carbamazepine degradation, mechanism and toxicity assessment

In this present study, spherical shaped zinc ferrite (Zn/Fe₂O₄) was prepared as uniformly sized (65 ± 0.5 nm) nanoparticles with band gap (2.00 eV) in a visible light regime and employed for the photocatalytic degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ). The doping of Zn decreased the band gap (from 2.00 to 1.98 eV) and enhanced the absorption of visible light. Zinc doping also induced effective separation of photogenerated carriers and subsequent charge migration to the surface of the Zn/Fe₂O₄ nanoparticle. On account of the advantages of the material, a high removal efficiency (~ 100%) of CBZ through photocatalytic degradation was achieved. Kinetics of CBZ degradation follows a pseudo first-order with the rate constant 0.0367 min^-1. In-vitro and in-vivo toxicity of the nanoparticles were examined promoting the environmental implications.

One-Step Microwave-Assisted Synthesis and Visible-Light Photocatalytic Activity Enhancement of BiOBr/RGO Nanocomposites for Degradation of Methylene Blue

In this study, bismuth oxybromide/reduced graphene oxide (BiOBr/RGO), i.e. BiOBr-G nanocomposites, were synthesized using a one-step microwave-assisted method. The structure of the synthesized nanocomposites was characterized using Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry (XRD), photoluminescence (PL) emission spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS). In addition, the ability of the nanocomposite to degrade methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation was investigated. The synthesized nanocomposite achieved an MB degradation rate of above 96% within 75 min of continuous visible light irradiation. In addition, the synthesized BiOBr-G nanocomposite exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity for the degradation of MB. Furthermore, the results revealed that the separation of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs in the BiOBr-G nanocomposite enhanced the ability of the nanocomposite to absorb visible light, thus improving the photocatalytic properties of the nanocomposites. Lastly, the MB photo-degradation mechanism of BiOBr-G was investigated, and the results revealed that the BiOBr-G nanocomposites exhibited good photocatalytic activity.

Rare earth metal (Sm) doped zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4) for improved photocatalytic elimination of toxic dye from aquatic system

Wastewater remediation is the serious topic that must be taken into concern which would be a most crucial problem that destroys the natural properties as well as it has some worse effect on living organisms. By doing better wastewater management, the scarcity of water for domestic purposes can be eventually managed. Dyes are main organic pollutant that must be removed from wastewater. Pristine, 1% Sm doped and 2% Sm doped ZnFe₂O₄ were prepared through simple co-precipitation method. The materials were further analyzed for its structure, optical properties, rotational properties and morphology studies. These analyses were investigated with respect to X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectroscopy, photoluminescence and scanning electron microscopic studies. XRD pattern of Pristine, 1% Sm doped and 2% Sm doped ZnFe₂O₄ was matched with JCPDS Card #89-1012 with cubic phase. Bandgap energy of prepared samples were 1.7 eV, 1.65 eV and 1.47 eV. The prepared cationic dye was degraded with help of visible light irradiation. 2% Sm doped ZnFe₂O₄ nanoparticles easily removed 65% of dye within 1 h duration. 2% Sm doped ZnFe₂O₄ was tested for its reusability and efficiency was stable for more than three cycles. This shows the stability of the sample towards degrading the cationic dye. By the doping of Samarium, ZnFe₂O₄ nanoparticles enthusiastically removed cationic dye and it proves to be an efficient candidate in removing dyes and can help in wastewater treatment in upcoming era.

NZF Nanoscale Particles: Synthesis, Characterization and its Effective Adsorption of Bromophenol Blue

The ferrospinels NixZn1_xFe2O4 (x = 0.0 and 0.6) nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully prepared by a sol-gel method and analyzed by TGA/DTA, XRD, SEM-EDS, UV-Vis-DRS, and pHIEP. The adsorption potential of NZF NPs towards the Bromophenol blue (BPB) dye was investigated. The batch adsorption efficiency parameters were studied including contact time, pH, initial dye concentrations and catalyst dosage. Results indicated that NZF crystallized in single-phase and exhibited smaller crystallite size (49 nm vs. 59.24 nm) than that of the pristine (ZF). The SEM analysis showed that the materials are elongated-like shape. NZF catalyst showed a red-shift of absorption bands and a more narrowed band gap (2.30 eV vs. 1.65 eV) as compared to ZF. The adsorption process was found to be highly dependent to the pH of the solution, dye concentration and adsorbent dose. Under optimum conditions of 5 mg.L–1 BPB, 0.5 g.L–1 NZF catalyst, pH = 6, and 25 °C, up to ≈ 86.30%  removal efficiency could be achieved after 60 min. Pseudo-second-order kinetic model gave the best fit with highest correlation coefficients (R2 ≥ 0.99). A high specific surface area, a stabilized dispersion state of NZF NPs and the electrostatic interaction between the BPB-2 anions and the NZF-H3O+active sites on NZF surface were believed to be the main factors that can be responsible for the high adsorption efficiency. Nano ferrites (AFe2O4, A = Zn, Co, Mn, Cu) as efficient catalysts for catalytic ozonation of toluene

Nano ferrites (AFe₂O₄, A = Zn, Co, Mn, Cu) were supported on the surface of γ-Al₂O₃ by hydrothermal synthesis to prepare a series of novel catalysts (AFe₂O₄/γ-Al₂O₃) for catalytic ozonation of high concentration toluene at ambient temperature.

Comparative Studies of Magneto-Optical and Photocatalytic Properties of Magnetically Recyclable Spinel ZnFe2O4 Nanostructures by Combustion Methods

Spinel ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully synthesized by a simple microwave irradiation method (MIM) using glycine as the fuel. For the comparative study purpose, it was also prepared by conventional heating (CHM) method. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), high resolution scanning electron microscope (HR-SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectra, selected area electron diffraction (SAED) analysis showed that the samples were pure phase spinel ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles-like morphology without any other secondary phase impurity. UV-Visible diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) and room temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectra were confirmed the optical bandgap ([Formula: see text] and defects state of the samples. The calculated [Formula: see text] values of the samples are 1.91[Formula: see text]eV and 2.08[Formula: see text]eV for ZnFe2O4-MIM and ZnFe2O4-CHM, respectively. Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) analysis show the Ms value is 37.66[Formula: see text]emu/g for ZnFe2O4-MIM, which is higher than ZnFe2O4-CHM (24.23 emu/g) sample, which confirm both the products showed superparamagnetic behavior. ZnFe2O4-MIM was found to have higher surface area than ZnFe2O4-CHM, which in turn leads to the improved performance toward the photocatalytic degradation (PCD) of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) and it was found that the sample ZnFe2O4-MIM show higher PCD efficiency (91.43%) than ZnFe2O4-CHM (84.65%), also the samples show high activity, good reusability, remarkable stability and environmentally friendly materials for industrial and technological applications.

High index facet bounded α-Fe2O3 pseudocubic nanocrystals with enhanced electrochemical properties: Zn2+ ion assisted solvo-hydrothermal synthesis

Pseudocubic α-Fe₂O₃ nanocrystals were grown by a surfactant-free, low temperature, solvo-hydrothermal process and characterised by XRD, FESEM, TEM, FTIR, Raman, XPS and UV-vis analysis.

Ultra-high sensitivity of luminescent ZnCr2O4 nanoparticles toward nitroaromatic explosives sensing

Here, we report the luminescence based sensing of trace amounts of nitroaromatic explosive organic compounds. The luminescence emission of nanosized spinel oxide ZnCr2O4 with high chemical and thermal stabilities has been used as a potential probe to detect such organic explosives. Low temperature solution combustion synthesized ZnCr2O4 oxide with an average particle size of ∼9 nm exhibits strong luminescence emission at 410 nm upon excitation at 260 nm in an aqueous suspension. The presence of nitroaromatics in ZnCr2O4 suspension dramatically suppresses the luminescence emission providing an opportunity to detect it quantitatively. The detection limit for 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) is as low as 23 ppb. A number of organic compounds have been investigated for a comprehensive understanding. The astonishing sensitivity of ZnCr2O4 nanoparticles towards nitro explosives is appealing for sensing application. A plausible explanation of such luminescence quenching has been ascribed to a two-fold mechanism. The underling mechanism is further substantiated by a similar study on ZnO nanoparticles.

Coordination polymer-derived nano-sized zinc ferrite with excellent performance in nitro-explosive detection

Herein, a mixed metal coordination polymer, {(H₂pip)[Zn_1/3Fe_2/3(pydc-2,5)₂(H₂O)]·2H₂O} 1 {where H₂pip = piperazinediium and pydc-2,5 = pyridine-2,5-dicarboxylate}, was successfully synthesized using a hydrothermal technique. To confirm the structure and phase purity of 1, single crystals of an isomorphous pure Fe compound, {(H₂pip)[Fe(pydc-2,5)₂(H₂O)]·2H₂O} 1a, were synthesized based on similar synthetic conditions. Single crystal X-ray data of 1a confirmed the one-dimensional anionic metal-organic coordination polymer hydrogen bonded with protonated piprazine (piperazinediium) and lattice water molecules. The phase purity of 1 and 1a were confirmed via powder X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 was systematically characterized using IR, TGA, SEM, and EDX elemental mapping analysis. Compound 1 was used as a single source precursor for the preparation of nano-sized ZnFe₂O₄via thermal decomposition. The as-obtained ZnFe₂O₄ was fully characterized using PXRD, SEM, TEM, and EDX elemental mapping analysis. It was found that ZnFe₂O₄ was formed in its pure form with particle size in the nano-dimension. The aqueous dispersion of nano-sized ZnFe₂O₄ exhibits a strong emission at 402 nm upon excitation at 310 nm. This emissive property was employed for luminescence-based detection of nitroaromatic explosives in an aqueous medium through luminescence quenching for the first time. Importantly, selective detections have been observed for phenolic nitroaromatics based on differential luminescence quenching behaviour along with a detection limit of 57 ppb for 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) in water.

Microwave synthesis of high-quality and uniform 4 nm ZnFe2O4 nanocrystals for application in energy storage and nanomagnetics

Magnetic nanocrystals with a narrow size distribution hold promise for many applications in different areas ranging from biomedicine to electronics and energy storage. Herein, the microwave-assisted sol-gel synthesis and thorough characterization of size-monodisperse zinc ferrite nanoparticles of spherical shape is reported. X-ray diffraction, ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy all show that the material is both chemically and phase-pure and adopts a partially inverted spinel structure with Fe³⁺ ions residing on tetrahedral and octahedral sites according to (Zn_0.32Fe_0.68)^tet[Zn_0.68Fe_1.32]^octO_4±δ. Electron microscopy and direct-current magnetometry confirm the size uniformity of the nanocrystals, while frequency-dependent alternating-current magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate the presence of a superspin glass state with a freezing temperature of about 22 K. Furthermore, as demonstrated by galvanostatic charge-discharge tests and ex situ X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy, the as-prepared zinc ferrite nanocrystals can be used as a high-capacity anode material for Li-ion batteries, showing little capacity fade - after activation - over hundreds of cycles. Overall, in addition to the good material characteristics, it is remarkable that the microwave-based synthetic route is simple, easily reproducible and scalable.

Physical synthesis methodology and enhanced gas sensing and photoelectrochemical performance of 1D serrated zinc oxide-zinc ferrite nanocomposites

We successfully prepared one-dimensional ZnO-ZnFe2O4 (ZFO) heterostructures for acetone gas-sensing and photoelectrochemical applications, by using sputter deposition of ZFO crystallites on ZnO nanostructure templates. The nanoscale ZFO crystallites were homogeneously coated on the surfaces of the ZnO nanostructures. Electron microscope images revealed that the ZnO-ZFO heterostructures exhibited a serrated surface morphology. Coating the ZnO nanostructures with a ZFO aggregated layer appreciably enhanced their acetone gas-sensing capability at 250 °C in comparison with pure ZnO nanostructures. The presence of many depleted nanoscale ZFO crystallites, the rugged surface of the heterostructures, and electron depletion at the ZnO/ZFO interface might contribute to the enhanced acetone gas-sensing response. Furthermore, the larger surface area and higher light absorption of ZnO-ZFO relative to the surface area and light absorption of ZnO were correlated with a substantial enhancement of the photocurrent value of ZnO-ZFO in photoelectrochemical tests produced by the simulated solar light irradiation.

Growth and crystallographic feature-dependent characterization of spinel zinc ferrite thin films by RF sputtering

ZnFe2O4 (ZFO) thin films exhibiting varying crystallographic features ((222)-epitaxially, (400)-epitaxially, and randomly oriented films) were grown on various substrates by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering. The type of substrate used profoundly affected the surface topography of the resulting ZFO films. The surface of the ZFO (222) epilayer was dense and exhibited small rectangular surface grains; however, the ZFO (400) epilayer exhibited small grooves. The surface of the randomly oriented ZFO thin film exhibited distinct three-dimensional island-like grains that demonstrated considerable surface roughness. Magnetization-temperature curves revealed that the ZFO thin films exhibited a spin-glass transition temperature of approximately 40 K. The crystallographic orientation of the ZFO thin films strongly affected magnetic anisotropy. The ZFO (222) epitaxy exhibited the strongest magnetic anisotropy, whereas the randomly oriented ZFO thin film exhibited no clear magnetic anisotropy.

A spectroscopic investigation on the interaction of a magnetic ferrofluid with a model plasma protein: effect on the conformation and activity of the protein

The understanding of the interaction of nanomaterials with relevant biological targets e.g., proteins is of paramount importance in biological and pharmaceutical fields of research. In a biological fluid, proteins can associate with nanomaterials which can subsequently exert a significant impact on the conformation and functionality of the protein. Here we report the binding interaction of a model plasma protein Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) with a magnetic nanoparticle of mixed spinel origin (Ni(0.5)Zn(0.5)Fe(2)O(4), abbreviated as NZFO from now and onwards). The thermodynamic parameters (ΔH, ΔS and ΔG) for the protein-nanoparticle binding interaction have been evaluated from the van't Hoff equation to unveil that the binding interaction is enthalpically as well as entropically driven (ΔH < 0 and ΔS > 0), with an overall favorable Gibbs free energy change (ΔG < 0). Also the thermodynamic parameters delineate the predominant role of electrostatic interaction in the BSA-NZFO binding process. The results of temperature dependent fluorescence quenching and time-resolved fluorescence decay measurements indicate a static quenching mechanism in the present case. Steady-state absorption, synchronous fluorescence, three-dimensional (3D) fluorescence and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopic techniques have been employed to unveil the conformational changes in BSA induced by the binding of NZFO. Disruption of the native conformation of the protein upon binding with NZFO is reflected through a reduced functionality (in terms of esterase activity) of the protein-NZFO conjugate system in comparison to the native protein. Based on the experimental findings the probable binding location of NZFO is argued to be the hydrophilic domain IB. This seems physically realizable since domain I of BSA is characterized by a net negative charge and hence can serve as a favorable binding site for NZFO carrying a positive surface charge. The key role of electrostatic forces in the BSA-NZFO interaction process is further substantiated from chemical denaturation study and measurement of the effect of ionic strength on the interaction process.
