Overview of the Last 71 Years of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery: Content Analysis and Meta-analysis to Investigate the Topic and Scientific Evolution

Obesity is a worldwide epidemic, and bariatric surgery has become increasingly popular due to its effectiveness in treating it. Therefore, understanding this area is of paramount importance. This article aims to provide an understanding of the development of the topic related to procedures, content, data, and status. To achieve this objective, a literature review and a bibliometric analysis were conducted. The methods provided insight into the current state and relevant topics over time. In conclusion, the article provided the identification of the transformation of the research field, initially focused only on physical aspects, to a more complex approach, which also incorporates psychological and social aspects and the correlation between obesity, bariatric surgery, and quality of life.

The most influential COVID-19 articles: A systematic review

Background

Since December 2019, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2),causative pathogen of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has triggered a pandemic with challenges for health care systems around the world. Researchers have studied and published on the subject of SARS-CoV-2 and the disease extensively. What is the significance of articles published, shared and cited in the early stages of such a pandemic?

Materials and methods

A systematic literature search in a time frame of 12 months and analysis rating using Principle Component Analysis (PCA) and Multiple Factor Analysis (MFA) were performed.

Results

The 100 most cited COVID-19 articles were identified. The majority of these articles were from China (n = 54), followed by United States of America (USA) (n = 21) and United Kingdom (UK) (n = 8). All articles were published in high-ranked, peer-reviewed journals, with research focusing onthe the diagnosis, transmission and therapy of COVID-19. The level of evidence of the 100 most cited COVID-19 articles on average was low.

Conclusion

In the early stages of a pandemic, new and innovative research can emerge and be highly cited, regardless of the level of evidence.

New insight into the current study of high tibial osteotomy: A bibliometric analysis

BACKGROUND

To analyze global trends in focus and funding of research related to high tibial osteotomy (HTO) and to identify the 100 most cited articles in this field.

METHODS

A Web of Science search was used to identify HTO publications in English-language scientific journals from January 1967 till February 3th, 2021. Results were filtered to the 100 most cited articles by reading the abstract or full-text paper. Information of these articles was recorded for further analysis. The 10 top-cited articles during the last 5 years and the 10 top-cited articles about HTO ranked by average citations per year were selected to predict research trends.

RESULTS

In all, 48 out of the 100 top-cited articles were published between 2000 and 2010. The United States of America was the primary contributor (n = 29) followed by Germany (n = 17) and Japan (n = 11). The total number of citations per article ranged from 65 to 563, median 108, mean 135 (standard deviation = 84). The American Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery accounted for 23 out of the 100 top-cited articles. Koshino T was the most cited author (603 citations). The most frequently highlighted study theme was prognostic research. Patient-based clinical research was the dominant study design (85%). The majority of articles (48 out of 100) were level IV evidence with a mean of 141 (standard deviation = 97) citations. Top-cited articles in the last 5 years focused on open wedge osteotomy.

CONCLUSION

Technical optimization of open wedge osteotomy has emerged as the main area of research in HTO. More specifically, recent publications focus on the surgical technology, cartilage repair and new fixation devices. Besides, papers with a high level of evidence are needed for the development of HTO.

Exploring the landscape, hot topics, and trends of bariatric metabolic surgery with machine learning and bibliometric analysis

Background

This study aimed to analyze the landscape of publications on bariatric metabolic surgery through machine learning and help experts and scholars from various disciplines better understand bariatric metabolic surgery's hot topics and trends.

Methods

In January 2021, publications indexed in PubMed under the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) term 'Bariatric Surgery' from 1946 to 2020 were downloaded. Python was used to extract publication dates, abstracts, and research topics from the metadata of publications for bibliometric evaluation. Descriptive statistical analysis, social network analysis (SNA), and topic modeling with latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) were used to reveal bariatric metabolic surgery publication growth trends, landscape, and research topics.

Results

A total of 21,798 records of bariatric metabolic surgery-related literature data were collected from PubMed. The number of publications indexed to bariatric metabolic surgery had expanded rapidly. Obesity Surgery and Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases are currently the most published journals in bariatric metabolic surgery. The bariatric metabolic surgery research mainly included five topics: bariatric surgery intervention, clinical case management, basic research, body contour, and surgical risk study.

Conclusion

Despite a rapid increase in bariatric metabolic surgery-related publications, few studies were still on quality of life, psychological status, and long-term follow-up. In addition, basic research has gradually increased, but the mechanism of bariatric metabolic surgery remains to be further studied. It is predicted that the above research fields may become potential hot topics in the future.

Seventy years of bariatric surgery: A systematic mapping review of randomized controlled trials

While research publications on bariatric surgery (BS) have grown significantly over the past decade, there is no mapping of the existing body of evidence on this field of research. We performed a systematic review followed by a mapping of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in BS for people with obesity. From January 2020 to December 2020, we performed a systematic review of RCTs evaluating BS, versus another surgical procedure, or versus a medical control group, through a search of Embase and PubMed. There was no restriction on outcomes for study selection. A total of 114 RCTs were included, most (73.7%) of which were based on a comparison with Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and conducted between 2010 and 2020. Only 15% of the trials were multicenter and few (3.5%) were international. The median number of patients enrolled was 61 (interquartile range [IQR]: 47.3-100). Follow-up time was 1 to 2 years in 36% and 22.8% of the trials, respectively. Weight loss was the most studied criterion (87% of RCTs), followed by obesity-related diseases, and medical and surgical complications (73%, 54%, and 47% of RCTs, respectively). Nutritional deficiency frequency, body composition, and mental health were little studied (20%, 18% and 5% of RCTs, respectively). Our literature review revealed that much research in BS is wasted because of replication of RCTs on subjects for which there is already body of evidence, with small populations and follow-up times mostly below 2 years. Yet several research questions remain unaddressed, and there are few long-term trials. Future studies should take into account the experience of the past 70 years of research in this field.

Mapping of Intragastric Balloon Use: a Guide to the Activity of Institutions Through Bibliometry

BACKGROUND

Bibliometric analysis is an effective method for measuring scientific contributions in a variety of fields. It enables the numerical analysis of publications in a specific field and period of time, as well as the relationships between these publications. The present bibliometric analysis of publications relating to obesity treatment by means of intragastric balloons aimed to identify the bariatric centers using intragastric balloons, through the publications relating to their productivity; and furthermore, to reveal collaborations, types of balloons used, number of patients involved, and authors' productivity and favored journals.

METHOD

The PubMed and Scopus databases were used to retrieve only original articles presenting the results in body weight reduction.

RESULTS

Bibliographic research identified 164 publications for the period 2000-2021. Italy was ranked first with 37 publications; USA participated as collaborator with 9 different countries; the fluid-filled Orbera balloon is featured in 126 publications; the journal Obesity Surgery hosted 86 publications; Brazil reported the greatest number of patients with 5874 cases; Lorenzo M and Genco A, co-authors from Italy, authored 14 and 12 publications, respectively, and the most cited article was that of Genco et al. [2007] with 441 citations.

CONCLUSIONS

Bibliometric analysis gave us the opportunity to identify the centers through their scientific publications and to classify them in relation to their productivity in articles, in collaborations, in number of cases reported, and in the number of citations gained.

The Top 100 Most Cited Articles on Intrauterine Adhesion: a Bibliometric Analysis

Bibliometric analysis is a statistical method that attempts to assess articles by their citations, analyzing their frequency and citation pattern, which subsequently gleans direction and guidance for future research. Over the past few years, articles focused on intrauterine adhesions have been published with increasing frequency. Nevertheless, little is known about the properties and qualities of this research, and no current analysis exists that has examined the progress in intrauterine adhesion research. Web of Science Core Collection, BIOSIS Citation Index, and MEDLINE database were searched to identify articles on intrauterine adhesion published from 1950 to October 2020. The 100 most cited articles were chosen to analyze citation count, citation density, authorship, theme, geographic distribution, time-related flux, level of evidence, and network analysis. An overwhelming majority of these 100 articles were published in the 2010s (35%). Citations per article ranged from 30 to 253. Chinese authors published the most papers in the top 100, followed by the USA, France, Israel, and Italy. The most salient study themes included operative hysteroscopy and adjunctive treatments for improving reproductive outcomes. The most common level of evidence was level II, and there was no statistical difference in the number of citations between the levels. The network analysis indicated that hysteroscopy, hysteroscopic adhesiolysis, infertility, and the reproductive outcome had a great degree of centrality in the 2000s and 2010s. In comparison, placental implantation had a great degree of centrality in the 2000s, and stem cell and fibrosis had a great degree of centrality in the 2010s. The value of IUA investigation has been gradually appreciated recently. Hysteroscopic adhesiolysis was continuously explored to achieve better reproductive outcome. Over time, the main focus of research has gradually shifted from complications to postoperative adjuvant treatment. Moreover, breakthrough progress is needed in underlying mechanism and early prevention of IUA.

A bibliometric analysis of Wnt signaling pathway: from the top-100 cited articles to emerging trends

Background

Wnt signaling pathway plays a vital role in the regulation of development. An increasing number of articles about Wnt pathway components have been published. By analyzing these studies’ characteristics and qualities, we aim to reveal the current research focus and emerging trends in Wnt signaling.

Methods

The databases of Web of Science Core Collection, BIOSIS Citation Index, MEDLINE, etc. were utilized to identify articles on May 23rd, 2020. Wnt signaling pathway-related articles were identified, the 100 most cited articles and articles in the last decade were selected and calculated for citations without self-citation. The subsequent analysis included citation density (citations/article age), time-related flux, authorship, institution, journal, geographic distribution, and theme.

Results

These articles were published mainly from 2000 to 2009 (62%). Citations per article ranged from 599 to 3,780 with a median number of 880 times. Most studies (66%) came from the United States. Nusse Roel and Clevers Hans (15 and 13 papers) have contributed significantly to the field. The most highlighted study themes were cancer (15%), embryo development (14%), and cytoplasm signal transduction (11%). From 2011 to 2020, interest in emerging subtopics, including osteogenesis, immune, apoptosis, autophagy, microRNA, and cancer stem cell, are rising.

Conclusions

Cancer, embryo development, stem cell, and signal transduction process still play a major role in the field. With multiple emerging subtopics and investigation on an integrated view of the Wnt signal network, the association of Wnt with diseases was further revealed.

The top 100. Review of the most cited articles on pancreas and laparoscopy

INTRODUCTION

The number of citations is considered as an indirect indicator of the merit of an article, journal or researcher, although it is not an infallible method to determine scientific quality. Our goal is to determine the characteristics of the articles most cited about pancreas and laparoscopy.

METHODS

We performed a search of all articles published in any journal about pancreas and laparoscopy until September 2019 and selected the 100 most cited papers. We recorded number of citations, journal, year of publication, quartil, impact factor, institution, country, authors type of paper, type of surgery, topic and area.

RESULTS

The top 100 citations account 10,970 citations in total. The journal with the most articles is Surgical Endoscopy and 2007 is the year with the highest number of articles in the top 100 citations. The percentage of publications from America and Europe are similar. Case series is the most frequently paper, outcomes/morbidity is the most frequently discussed topic, and distal pancreatectomy is the most frequently type of surgery.

CONCLUSIONS

This bibliometric study on pancreas and laparoscopy is conditioned by the time factor, since laparoscopy has arrived later at pancreatic surgery, probably due to the morbidity and mortality associated with pancreatic surgery and the need for a high specialization in this field. The literature is recent and scarce. More and better-quality studies are needed in this field.

Latin American Research on Bariatric Surgery: a Bibliometric Study

We performed a bibliometric analysis of Latin American documents published between 1984 to 2019 in Scopus-indexed journals. A total of 1856 documents were analyzed. The annual scientific production was 64 documents per year, with an annual increase rate of 15.9%. The countries with the highest scientific production on BS were Brazil (64.7%) and Chile (14.5%). Most of the publications were original (76.6%) and review articles (11.9%). The journal with the highest publication record was "Obesity Surgery" (25.8%). The extra-regional collaboration was mainly with the USA. In conclusion, Latin American scientific production on BS has shown a significant increase in recent years. However, more participation is needed, fostering intra-regional collaboration and involving universities and health institutions in BS research.

Most cited 100 articles from Turkey on abdominal wall hernias: a bibliometric study

Objectives

The aim of the present study was to search the most-cited articles from Turkey on abdominal wall hernias and analyze their characteristics with several parameters.

Material and Methods

In March 2019, a search was conducted through all databases in the Web of Science (WoS) to determine the most-cited articles on abdominal wall hernias. Each article was evaluated in regard to host journal, year of publication, the complete list of authors, the type of article, main subject of the study, institution of the study group. Citation counts in Google Scholar (GSch) were also obtained.

Results

Mean number of citations of the top 100 articles in herniology was 30.50. Articles were published in 38 journals; Hernia is the leading host. No correlation was observed between the journal impact factors and the number of the citations. Two thirds of the articles were clinical studies. Article types had no significant effect on the citation counts. Inguinal hernia was the most frequent topic by taking place in 58 papers. Articles related to incisional hernias had a higher mean number of citations in comparison with other topics. Ankara University School of Medicine had most cited articles, the highest number of total citations, and the highest citation per articles. Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital and Istanbul University School of Medicine had the highest number of the articles in the list.

Conclusion

Citation counts of hernia related articles from Turkey are relatively low. Hernia is the leading journal for Turkish studies. Inguinal hernia is the most frequent topic whereas papers about incisional hernias receive more citations than others.

Most Cited Articles in Head and Neck Oncology

OBJECTIVES

The number of citations an article receives is an important indication of its impact. The main objectives of this investigation provide readers with a practical guide in evaluating head and neck oncology literature and determine the characteristics of trends in ORL.

METHODS

This was a retrospective bibliometric analysis that did not involve human participant. The Thomson Reuters Web of Science was searched to determine the citations of all published HNO articles. Most cited 300 article analyzed and a total of 100 articles were included in our investigation under the topic search "Head AND NECK AND (cancer OR carcinoma OR oncology)." Articles include malignancies other than head and neck are excluded. The top 100 cited articles were selected and analyzed by 2 independent investigators. Country, Institution, First Author, Journal name, study design, cites per year information gathered and analyzed.

RESULTS

The journal with the highest number of top 100 cited articles was New England Journal Of Medicine with 19 paper, followed by The Journal of Clinical Oncology(17) and Cancer Research (12). The top article on the list (Radiotherapy plus cetuximab for squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck-NEJM) has 2243 citations. A statistically significant association was found between the journal impact factor and the number of top 100 cited articles (P < .05). The United States had the highest number of articles (63). John Hopkins is differed from other institutions with 15 contributing articles.

CONCLUSION

Our analysis provides an insight into the citation frequency of top cited articles published in HNO to help recognize the quality of the works, discoveries and the trends steering the study of HNO. This is also a modern reading list for young HNO scientist.

The hundred most frequently cited studies on sleeve gastrectomy

INTRODUCTION

Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is one of the most popular bariatric operations and one of the most frequently studied areas in bariatric surgery.

AIM

To summarise the characteristics of the most frequently cited studies focusing on SG.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

We used the Web of Science database to identify all studies focused on SG published from 2000 to 2018. The term "sleeve gastrectomy" and synonyms were used to reveal the 100 most cited records.

RESULTS

The most frequently cited publication had 493 citations. The highest mean number of citations per year was 73.00. Studies were most frequently published in the years 2010 and 2012. Articles were most commonly published in bariatric surgery-oriented journals.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study indicates an increase in medical researchers' interest in the subject of SG and underlines the need to perform studies with a higher level of evidence to further analyse the outcomes and basic science behind SG.

The top 100 most cited articles on total hip arthroplasty: a bibliometric analysis

BACKGROUND

Over the past few decades, more and more articles about total hip arthroplasty have been published. We noticed, however, little is known about the characteristics and qualities of these studies.

METHODS

The databases of Web of Science Core Collection, BIOSIS Citation Index, MEDLINE, etc. were utilized for the identification of articles published from 1990 to May 2019. Total hip arthroplasty-related articles were identified, and the 100 most cited articles were selected for subsequent analysis of citation count, citation density (citations/article age), authorship, theme, geographic distribution, time-related flux, level of evidence, and network analysis.

RESULTS

The selected 100 articles were published mainly in the 1990s (46%) and 2000s (47%) with almost equal amount. Citations per article ranged from 994 to 191. Leading countries were the USA followed by Canada, England, and Sweden, all located in North America and Western Europe. The most highlighted study themes were postoperative thrombosis and surgical methods and materials. The most common level of evidence was level III (35%). The network analysis connoted that radiography, acetabulum, reoperation, and bone cement had a high degree of centrality in the 1990s, while cement had a high degree of centrality in the 2000s and 2010s.

CONCLUSIONS

The time, area, and theme distribution of the top 100 most cited articles in the total hip arthroplasty have been thoroughly analyzed. It is noticeable that postoperative thromboembolism currently plays a major role in the field of total hip arthroplasty researches. However, most of them focus on the effectiveness of different treatments and drugs; little is known about its underlying mechanisms and influencing factors.

Bibliometric Analysis of Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw: High Citation Rates but Low Evidence

PURPOSE

Citation analysis is one of the most commonly used bibliometric tools for measuring the academic importance of a report in a specific area of knowledge. The objective of the present study was to identify the 100 most cited reports on medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ), determine their main bibliometric characteristics, and identify the bibliometric variables that affected the citation rates.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We performed a data search in the Scopus database to determine the number of MRONJ article citations up to September 30, 2018. We next selected the 100 most referenced studies and recorded the following information: ranking according to the number of citations; citation density; number and names of authors; language and year of publication; country and institution of origin; financial support; journal name, impact factor, category, and quartile; type of research; evidence level; and area of study.

RESULTS

The 100 most cited reports had a mean citation density of 21.7 ± 20.7 (range, 6.2 to 99.4) and an h-index of 96. The 100 most cited reports on MRONJ had been published in 42 scientific journals, classified into 10 separate categories of the Journal Citation Reports; 56% of the articles were in the first quartile of their category. Most of the studies had been classified with a level of evidence of 4 (n = 45) or 5 (n = 29). In the bivariate analyses, only the conflict of interest (P = .002) was associated with citation density. After adjusting for numerous variables, conflict of interest (r = 0.27; P = .020) and country of the first author (r = 0.23; P = .043) were significantly associated with citation density.

CONCLUSIONS

The 100 most cited studies of MRONJ had a large number of citations and had been reported in journals with a high impact factor; however, the studies had a generally low evidence level and randomized clinical trials were lacking.

The top 100: A review of the most cited articles in Surgery

INTRODUCTION

We performed a study of the top 100 most cited articles in the five general surgery journals with the highest impact according to Journal Citation Report.

METHODS

We selected the five journals with the highest impact in 2015: Annals of Surgery, British Journal of Surgery, JAMA Surgery, Surgery, and Journal of the American College of Surgeons. In January 2017, using the Web of Science application, we performed a search of all articles published by these journals and identified the 100 most cited articles (top 100). We evaluated the number of citations, year of publication, type of article, country and hospital of the article, area of interest and number of authors.

RESULTS

The median number of citations per top 100 paper was 490. Twenty percent of the top 100 papers have been published since 2000. Overall, 70% are original papers, 8% randomized control trials, 11% reviews, 1% meta-analyses and 11% other subtypes. There are 13% proceedings papers. Sixty-one percent are from the US. The most frequently discussed topic is hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery (33%).

CONCLUSIONS

The top 100 most cited articles tend to be original articles describing studies carried out in the US, reporting significant surgical breakthroughs. Hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery is the most common subject area. Annals of Surgery had twice as many citations as the other journals studied. The archetypal article of the Top15 most cited is an original paper published in the twentieth century, with an average of 2000 citations.

Citation classics in pediatrics: a bibliometric analysis

BACKGROUND

Citation analysis provides insights into the history and developmental trajectory of scientific fields. Our objective was to perform an analysis of citation classics in the journals of pediatric specialty and to examine their characteristics.

METHODS

Initially, all the journals listed under the category of pediatrics (n = 120) were identified using Journal Citation Reports. Web of science database was then searched (1950-2016) to select the top-100 cited articles in the above identified pediatric journals. The top-100 cited article were categorized according the study design, sub-specialty, country, institutional affiliation, and language.

RESULTS

The top-100 articles were published in 18 different journals, with Pediatrics having the highest numbers (n = 40), followed by The Journal of Pediatrics (n = 17). The majority (n = 62) of classics were published after 1990. The most cited article had citation count of 3516 and the least cited had a citation count of 593. The USA (n = 71) was the most commonly represented country, and 60 institutions contributed to 100 articles. Fifteen authors contributed to more than one classic as first or second author. Observational study (n = 55) was the commonest study design across all decades, followed by reviews (n = 12), scale development studies (n = 11), and guidelines (n = 11). Among the pediatric sub-specialties, growth and development articles were highly cited (n = 24), followed by pediatric psychiatry and behavior (n = 21), endocrinology (n = 15), and neonatology (n = 12).

CONCLUSIONS

The top-100 cited articles in pediatrics identify the impactful authors, journals, institutes, and countries. Observational study design was predominant-implying that inclusion among citation classics is not related to soundness of study design.

The Evolution of Bariatric Surgery Publications and Global Productivity: A Bibliometric Analysis

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to report on scientific production in bariatric surgery (BS).

BACKGROUND

BS has gained popularity particularly in the last two decades and its indications have extended with the laparoscopic development and the metabolic activity of the surgical treatment. However, there is still little information on scientific production related to BS.

METHODS

"Bariatric Surgery" or "Obesity Surgery" terms were searched through Web of Science focusing on the period 1980-2016. The analysis also included the correlations between economic productivity, humanity index, technological advancement levels, and performances of the countries in both fields.

RESULTS

A total number of 17,568 publications was found. Of these, 9087 were conducted in the field of surgery. The most prolific journal was Obesity Surgery (4707, 26.8%). The most cited article according to average citations per year was published in the Obesity Surgery (average citations 90.40, total citation 452). Beside the number of publications, the USA was in the leading position in several other fields (active institutions, active journals, active authors, citation analysis, and international cooperation). Sweden was the most productive country in BS publications (4.505). Several factors related to the number of publications in BS demonstrated significant correlations in our study (p < 0.01). The highest correlation was found with GDP (r = 0.763, p < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

The present study shows that the studies on BS has mainly been conducted in developed and developing countries.

Most cited publications in oral and maxillofacial surgery: a bibliometric analysis

BACKGROUND

Citation is one of the most important forms of acknowledgment and recognition received by our peers in academia. This study identifies and characterizes the current topmost highly cited publications in journals specifically dedicated to the specialty. The purpose of this study is to identify, using the citation count, works that have made key contributions in the field and to provide insight into the direction the specialty has taken in the last 30 years.

METHODS

Four journals that were dedicated to the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) were selected. The SCOPUS database was utilized to perform a citation analysis on the top 200 publications in the month of May, 2017. Each publication was individually reviewed for the number of citations, the source journal of the manuscript, its year of publications, the article type, the country of origin, the study type, and the level of evidence. We categorized every manuscript within a subspecialty.

RESULTS

The number of citations ranged from 2824 to 118 over the last four decades. The majority of the manuscripts were published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (60.5%) followed by the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (25%). Only 3% of these publications were of level I evidence. The most frequent field of publication was benign pathology (18.5%) followed by dental implantology (19%) and then craniomaxillofacial trauma (12%) and craniomaxillofacial deformities (12%). The majority of the publications were articles, of which 59.5% were case-control, case series, or cohort studies. Nine of the top 20 most cited articles and 12.5% of all the most cited papers were related to osteoradionecrosis, osteochemonecrosis, and bisphosphonates. The majority of these publications originated in the USA (44%), followed by Sweden (9.20%), the Netherlands and UK (7.76%), and Germany (5.82%).

CONCLUSION

Despite considerable advances in the quality of both clinical and laboratory research, only six level I studies were identified. Osteonecrosis/bisphosphonates and platelet-rich plasma were frequent topics indicating the recent interests in these fields. The USA has continued to play a major role in the research; however, there needs to be more international, multi-institutional cooperative collaborations.

Systematic review on citation classics in minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery

Background:

The impact an article has on a specific field is manifested by its number of citations. The aim of this systematic review was to perform a citation analysis and identify the 100 most-cited articles in the field of minimally invasive (MI) gastrointestinal (GI) surgery.

Methods:

The Institute for Scientific Information Web of Knowledge (1945–2017) was utilised to identify the top 100 most-cited articles in the field of MI GI surgery, using 19 distinct keywords. The data extracted were number of citations, time of publication, research topic, level of evidence, authorship and country of origin.

Results:

Of the 100 most-cited articles, the number of citations ranged from 3331 to 317 citations. Most publications reported on bariatric surgery (n = 36), followed by oncology (n = 26) and hepatobiliary surgery (n = 15). The studies were published in 26 different journals with the top three journals being Annals of Surgery (n = 30), New England Journal of Medicine (n = 10) and Obesity Surgery (n = 9). The studies were conducted in 17 different countries led by the USA (n = 51), the UK (n = 9) and France (n = 6). Articles were published on all levels of evidence: level I (n = 20), Level II (n = 29), Level III (n = 8), Level IV (n = 29) and Level V (n = 14).

Conclusion:

The study revealed citation classics in the field of MI surgery. Interestingly, a high level of evidence was not significantly associated with an increased citation number.

The Most Frequently Cited 100 Articles in Liver Transplantation Literature

INTRODUCTION

We investigated the liver transplantation literature since 1975 and found the most frequently cited 100 articles and assessed the distribution of authors and journals of these articles.

METHOD

Using the advanced mode of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Web of Science (WOS) search engine, the words "SU = transplantation AND TI = liver OR SU = transplantation AND TS = liver" were used to scan articles and determine the most-cited 100 articles on July 18, 2016.

RESULTS

From 1975 to date, it appears a total of 43,369 articles were published in the field of liver transplantation in the WOS. Although the most cited article had 677 citations, the least cited article had 180 citations. The mean citation number for the 100 articles was 252.31 ± 96.75. The mean annual citation number for the articles varied from 61.55 to 5 and the mean was 15.31 ± 8.63. The most cited article was by Feng et al "Characteristics Associated With Liver Graft Failure: The Concept of a Donor Risk Index" published in the American Journal of Transplantation (677 citations).

CONCLUSION

Bibliometric analysis highlights the key topics and publications that have shaped the understanding and management of liver transplantation. According to our research, this is the first study to investigate articles with most citations in the field of liver transplantation. In our study the article with the most citations was cited 677 times, whereas the 100th article was cited 180 times with a mean citation number for the 100 articles of 252.31 ± 96.75.

Plenary presentations and public citations from The American Association for Thoracic Surgery

OBJECTIVE

We examined the impact of work presented in the plenary sessions at the meeting of The American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS), by determining how frequently the published papers corresponding to the session presentations during the past 20 years, were cited; those that were most cited were identified.

METHODS

We reviewed the AATS meeting programs from the 20-year period from 1994 to 2014 and identified the corresponding publications in the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (JTCVS) from all abstracts presented at the plenary sessions. Papers were categorized as cardiac, thoracic, or congenital. References were evaluated for subsequent citation in the Web of Science (WoS), and Google Scholar (GS). We determined both the median number of citations overall, and per year. For comparison, we evaluated numbers of citations in WoS from current JTCVS papers in issues containing the 3 most-cited plenary session papers.

RESULTS

Among 195 published plenary papers, the median number of citations in WoS and GS was 49 and 76, respectively. The median total number of citations in WoS was as follows: 51 for cardiac-category papers (n = 105); 61 for thoracic (n = 55), and 41 for congenital (n = 35). These values were higher than the median total number of citations for contemporary nonplenary JTCVS papers: cardiac (22, n = 55; P < .001); thoracic (31.5, n = 8; P = .183); and congenital (15.5, n = 24; P = .002) papers published in JTCVS. The median number of citations per year since publication for plenary publications was 5.9 (cardiac), 6 (thoracic), and 3.7 (congenital), respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Publications corresponding to the plenary sessions of the AATS are highly cited and include some of the seminal studies in our field in the past 20 years.
