Abstract
This study assessed the relationships between binge eating disorder (BED) and eating self-efficacy in a sample of patients prior to bariatric surgery. The study also examined the extent that BED status accounted for variance in self-efficacy after controlling for demographic factors (age, sex and race), physical variables (comorbidities and body mass index [BMI]) and depressive symptoms. This was a cross-sectional study of pre-surgical data from patients seeking bariatric surgery at a university-based healthcare system (N = 98; mean ± SD age of 46.2 ± 12.5 years; BMI of 45.4 ± 7.2 kg/m2 ; 86.7% female; and 60.2% of patients self-identified as White). Patients completed the Weight and Lifestyle Inventory (WALI), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and Weight Efficacy Lifestyle Questionnaire. Of the total sample, 15.3% met criteria for BED, 33.7% had subthreshold BED and 51.0% were free of this disorder. In adjusted analyses, total self-efficacy was significantly lower in patients with subthreshold BED (B ± SE = -15.88 ± 7.23, p = .03) and individuals with BED (B ± SE = -35.07 ± 10.23, p = .001) than in those without BED. Patients with BED, compared to those without, had significantly worse scores (in adjusted analyses) on the self-efficacy subscales of negative emotions (p = .003), availability of food (p < .001), social pressure (p = .004) and positive activities (p = .03). In patients seeking bariatric surgery, total self-efficacy scores were significantly lower in patients with BED and subthreshold BED than those without BED. The results suggest that eating self-efficacy may be an important factor to target in patients with BED who seek bariatric surgery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Numerous empirical studies and theoretical models posit that shame is a common experience among individuals across the eating disorder spectrum. In this study we aim to investigate the association between shame and eating disorders symptoms using a meta-analytical approach. METHOD In this meta-analysis, we synthesized findings from 195 studies to examine the proposed association between shame and eating disorders symptoms. We looked at the associations with both general eating disorders symptoms and with specific eating disorders symptoms (i.e., anorexic, bulimic, and binge-eating symptoms). Moderation analyses testing for the effect of type of shame, type of eating symptoms, clinical status, quality of the study, age, and gender were conducted. RESULTS Shame was significantly associated with a medium to large effect size with all types of eating disorders symptoms (rs between .40 and .52). Body shame (r = .55) and shame around eating (r = .59) were more strongly related with eating disorders pathology. Type of eating disorders symptoms did not moderate the relationship between shame and disturbed eating. DISCUSSION Overall, the magnitude of the effect size of the association between shame and eating disorders symptoms is a medium to large one. Body shame and shame around eating seem to be the types of shame most closely tied with eating disorders symptoms, suggesting that directly targeting them in interventions might be highly beneficial. Findings highlight current gaps in the literature (e.g., mostly correlational studies, low quality studies) with implications for future research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Emotional eating in bariatric surgery patients is inconsistently linked with poor post-operative weight loss and eating behaviors, and much research to date is atheoretical. To examine theory-informed correlates of pre-operative emotional eating, the present cross-sectional analysis examined paths through which experienced weight bias and internalized weight bias (IWB) may associate with emotional eating among individuals seeking bariatric surgery. METHODS We examined associations of experienced weight bias, IWB, shame, self-compassion, and emotional eating in patients from a surgical weight loss clinic (N = 229, 82.1% female, M. BMI: 48 ± 9). Participants completed a survey of validated self-report measures that were linked to BMI from the patient medical record. Multiple regression models tested associations between study constructs while PROCESS bootstrapping estimates tested the following hypothesized mediation model: IWB ➔ internalized shame ➔ self-compassion ➔ emotional eating. Primary analyses controlled for adverse childhood experiences (ACE), a common confound in weight bias research. Secondary analyses controlled for depressive/anxiety symptoms from the patient medical record (n = 196). RESULTS After covariates and ACE, each construct accounted for significant unique variance in emotional eating. However, experienced weight bias was no longer significant and internalized shame marginal, after controlling for depressive/anxiety symptoms. In a mediation model, IWB was linked to greater emotional eating through heightened internalized shame and low self-compassion, including after controlling for depressive/anxiety symptoms. CONCLUSIONS Pre-bariatric surgery, IWB may signal risk of emotional eating, with potential implications for post-operative trajectories. Self-compassion may be a useful treatment target to reduce IWB, internalized shame, and related emotional eating in bariatric surgery patients. Further longitudinal research is needed.

Abstract
There is significant variability in the type and severity of symptoms reported by individuals diagnosed with binge-eating disorder (BED). Using latent class analysis (LCA), the current study aimed to investigate potential sources of heterogeneity among individuals with BED. Participants were 775 treatment-seeking adults with DSM-IV-defined BED. Doctoral research clinicians reliably assessed participants for BED and associated eating-disorder psychopathology using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Disorders and the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) interview, measured weight and height, and participants completed a battery of self-report measures. Based on fit statistics and class interpretability, a 2-class model yielded the best overall fit to the data. The two classes were most distinct with respect to differences in body image concerns, distress about binge-eating, and depressive symptomology. Number of binge episodes were significantly different between classes, though the effect was much smaller. Body mass index was not a significant covariate in the majority of models. The results show that many of the features currently used to define BED (e.g., binge-eating frequency) are not helpful in explaining heterogeneity among individuals with BED. Instead, body image disturbances, which are not currently included as a part of the diagnostic classification system, appear to differentiate distinct subgroups of individuals with BED. Future research examining subgroups based on body image could be integral to resolving ongoing conflicting evidence related to the etiology and maintenance of BED.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Psychopathology in bariatric surgery patients may contribute to adverse postoperative sequelae, including weight regain, substance use, and self-harm. This cross-sectional study aimed to advance the understanding of the risk and protective paths through which weight bias associates with depressive and anxiety symptoms in bariatric surgery candidates (BSC). METHODS BSC recruited from a surgical clinic (N = 213, 82.2% women, 43 [SD 12] years, mean BMI: 49 [SD 9] kg/m2 ) completed measures of experienced weight bias (EWB), internalized weight bias (IWB), body and internalized shame, and self-compassion; anxiety and depression screeners were accessed from medical charts. Multiple regression and PROCESS bootstrapping estimates tested our hypothesized mediation model as follows: EWB→IWB→body shame→shame→self-compassion→symptoms. RESULTS After accounting for EWB and IWB, internalized shame accounted for greater variance in both end points than body shame. EWB was associated with greater anxiety through risk paths implicating IWB, body shame, and/or internalized shame. Protective paths associated EWB with fewer depressive and anxiety symptoms among those with higher self-compassion. CONCLUSIONS The findings suggest a potentially important role for weight bias and shame in psychological health among BSC and implicate self-compassion, a trainable affect-regulation strategy, as a protective factor that may confer some resiliency. Future research using longitudinal and causal designs is warranted.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Little is known regarding overvaluation of weight or shape, a key cognitive feature of eating disorders, among individuals with disordered eating following bariatric surgery. This study examined the significance of overvaluation of weight or shape among post-bariatric surgery patients with loss-of-control (LOC) eating. METHODS Participants were 145 individuals who had undergone sleeve gastrectomy within the previous 6 months and reported regular LOC eating. Overvaluation of weight or shape, LOC eating, and eating disorder psychopathology were assessed using the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE)-Bariatric Surgery Version interview; depressive symptoms and disability were assessed by the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) and the Sheehan Disability Scale (SDS), respectively. RESULTS Overvaluation of weight or shape, examined continuously, was correlated significantly with higher levels of eating disorder psychopathology (EDE), depression (BDI-II), and disability (SDS). Categorically, using established clinical cut points, relative to the subclinical overvaluation group (n = 70 [48.3%]), the clinical overvaluation group (n = 75 [51.7%]) reported significantly greater frequency of LOC eating episodes and higher EDE, BDI-II, and SDS scores. The two groups did not differ significantly in current BMI or percent weight loss following surgery. CONCLUSIONS These findings, which highlight the clinical significance of overvaluation of weight or shape among patients with LOC eating following bariatric surgery, are similar to those previously reported for binge-eating disorder. Postoperatively, overvaluation of weight or shape was associated with greater eating disorder psychopathology, depression, and disability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To characterize loss-of-control eating following sleeve gastrectomy surgery by comparing relevant patient groups. METHOD Participants were 431 adults seeking treatment for eating/weight concerns categorized into one of four groups: 1) overweight/obesity (OW/OB), 2) binge-eating disorder (BED), 3) "Bariatric Binge-Eating Disorder" (Bar-BED) defined as meeting all criteria for DSM-5 binge-eating disorder, except for the requirement of an unusually large amount of food, following sleeve gastrectomy surgery, and 4) "Bariatric Loss-of-Control Eating" (Bar-LOC Only), defined as experiencing at least once weekly loss-of-control eating episodes during the past month without the other associated clinical features and distress that characterize Bar-BED, following sleeve gastrectomy surgery. RESULTS The Bar-BED and BED groups reported comparable levels of overall eating-disorder and depressive symptoms, and these levels were significantly higher than those levels reported by the OW/OB and Bar-LOC Only groups. Adjusting for age, body mass index, and race did not change the overall pattern of findings. CONCLUSION "Bariatric Binge-Eating Disorder" shares clinical features of DSM-5 binge-eating disorder, regardless of the quantity of food consumed. Careful assessment of loss-of-control eating, associated behavioral features, and distress is warranted following surgery. More broadly, our findings highlight the importance of assessing loss-of-control eating across patient groups with obesity.

Abstract
Background/Objectives: Previous studies suggest that non-invasive transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) applied to the prefrontal cortex modulates food choices and calorie intake in obese humans. Participants/Methods: In the present fully randomized, placebo-controlled, within-subject and double-blinded study, we applied single sessions of anodal, cathodal, and sham tDCS to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and contralateral frontal operculum in 25 hungry obese women and investigated possible influences on food reappraisal abilities as well as calorie intake. We hypothesized that tDCS, (i) improves the ability to regulate the desire for visually presented foods and, (ii) reduces their consumption. Results: We could not confirm an effect of anodal or cathodal tDCS, neither on the ability to modulate the desire for visually presented foods, nor on calorie consumption. Conclusions: The present findings do not support the notion of prefrontal/frontal tDCS as a promising treatment option for obesity.
