Atomic molar ratio optimization of carbon nanotube supported PdAuCo catalysts for ethylene glycol and methanol electrooxidation in alkaline media

One-Step Electrochemical Sensing of CA-125 Using Onion Oil-Based Novel Organohydrogels as the Matrices

To reduce the high mortality rates caused by ovarian cancer, creating high-sensitivity, quick, basic, and inexpensive methods for following cancer antigen 125 (CA-125) levels in blood tests is of extraordinary significance. CA-125 is known as the exclusive glycoprotein employed in clinical examinations to monitor and diagnose ovarian cancer and detect its relapses as a tumor marker. Elevated concentrations of this antigen are linked to the occurrence of ovarian cancer. Herein, we designed organohydrogels (ONOHs) for identifying the level of CA-125 antigen at fast and high sensitivity with electrochemical strategies in a serum medium. The ONOH structures are synthesized with glycerol, agar, and glutaraldehyde and at distinct ratios of onion oil, and then, the ONOHs are characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Electrochemical measurements are performed by cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in the absence and presence of CA-125 on the designed ONOHs. For the prepared ONOH-3 electrode, two distinct linear ranges are determined as 0.41-8.3 and 8.3-249.0 U/mL. The limit of quantitation and limit of detection values are calculated as 2.415 and 0.805 μU/mL, respectively, (S/N = 3). These results prove that the developed electrode material has high sensitivity, stability, and selectivity for the detection of the CA-125 antigen. In addition, this study can be reasonable for the practical detection of CA125 in serum, permitting early cancer diagnostics and convenient treatment.

Engineering Heterostructured Pd-Bi2Te3 Doughnut/Pd Hollow Nanospheres for Ethylene Glycol Electrooxidation

The electrooxidation of ethylene glycol (EG) is of vital significance for the conversion from biomass energy into electrical energy via direct fuel cells. However, the EG oxidation reaction (EGOR) suffers from poor efficiency due to the limitation of high-performance electrocatalysts for cleaving the C-C bonds. Herein, this limitation is successfully addressed by fabricating the doughnut-shaped Pd-Bi₂Te₃ heterostructured catalyst. Notably, the heterojunction Pd-Bi₂Te₃ nanocatalyst has been demonstrated to be highly active toward the EGOR with superb activity and durability, in which a mass activity as high as 2420.8 mA mg^-1 is achieved in alkaline media, being 1.7 times higher than that of the commercial Pd/C catalyst. Upon combination of experimental results with mechanism studies, it is indicated that the remarkable EGOR performance is attributed to the enlarged active areas that stemmed from the doughnut-like structure, as well as the strong synergistic effect from Pd-Bi₂Te₃ and Pd. More importantly, the highly electroactive Pd-Bi₂Te₃ can accelerate charge transfer and boost the oxidation of CO-like intermediates, which are conducive to the enhancement in electrochemical stability.

Effect of Anode Material on Electrochemical Oxidation of Low Molecular Weight Alcohols-A Review

The growing climate crisis inspires one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century-developing novel power sources. One of the concepts that offer clean, non-fossil electricity production is fuel cells, especially when the role of fuel is played by simple organic molecules, such as low molecular weight alcohols. The greatest drawback of this technology is the lack of electrocatalytic materials that would enhance reaction kinetics and good stability under process conditions. Currently, electrodes for direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs) are mainly based on platinum, which not only provides a poor reaction rate but also readily deactivates because of poisoning by reaction products. Because of these disadvantages, many researchers have focused on developing novel electrode materials with electrocatalytic properties towards the oxidation of simple alcohols, such as methanol, ethanol, ethylene glycol or propanol. This paper presents the development of electrode materials and addresses future challenges that still need to be overcome before direct alcohol fuel cells can be commercialized.

An environmentally friendly one-pot synthesis method by the ultrasound assistance for the decoration of ultrasmall Pd-Ag NPs on graphene as high active anode catalyst towards ethanol oxidation

An environmentally friendly one-pot synthesis approach for the decoration of Pd-Ag nanoparticles with the ultrasmall size on graphene (Pd-Ag/G) by the assistance of ultrasound is proposed in this paper. This method offers exceptional advantages over other approaches such as environmentally friendly synthesis, being low temperature, reductant, surfactant free, simple, fast and one-pot synthesis. In this work, silver formate is added to the graphene suspension at 25 °C. Then, PdCl₂ is added to the suspension under stirring to fabricate Pd-Ag/G. The uniform dispersity of nanoparticles with an average size of about 2-3 nm is well confirmed by transmission electron microscopy micrographs. The resultant catalyst is applied as anode electrocatalyst towards electrooxidation reaction of ethanol. The Pd-Ag/G catalyst displays exceptional catalytic activity and durability towards electro-oxidation of ethanol. According to the obtained results, it be concluded that the combination of Ag and Pd, ultrasmall and uniform distribution of Pd-Ag nanoparticles led to the improvement of electrocatalytic activity of the Pd-Ag/G catalyst.
