Novel Fe3O4 chitosan–quince-seed mucilage polymeric composite to enhance protein release

Stimuli-responsive glucuronoxylan polysaccharide from quince seeds for biomedical, food packaging, and environmental applications

Mucilage is a gelatinous mixture of polysaccharides secreted from the seed coat and/or pericarp of many plant seeds when soaked in water. Mucilage affected seed germination while maintaining hydration levels during scarcity. Cydonia oblonga (quince) seeds are natural hydrocolloids extruding biocompatible mucilage mainly composed of polysaccharides. Quince seed mucilage (QSM) has fascinated researchers due to its applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries. On a commercial scale, QSM preserved the sensory and physiochemical properties of various products such as yogurt, desserts, cakes, and burgers. QSM is responsive to salts, pH, and solvents and is mainly investigated as edible coatings in the food industry. In tablet formulations, modified and unmodified QSM as a binder sustained the release of various drugs such as cefixime, capecitabine, diclofenac sodium, theophylline, levosulpiride, diphenhydramine, metoprolol tartrate, and acyclovir sodium. QSM acted as a reducing and capping agent to prepare nanoparticles for good antimicrobial resistance, photocatalytic characteristics, and wound-healing potential. The present review discussed the extraction optimization, chemical composition, stimuli-responsiveness, and viscoelastic properties of mucilage. The potential of mucilage in edible films, tissue engineering, and water purification will also be discussed.

Developing sulfur-doped titanium oxide nanoparticles loaded chitosan/cellulose-based proangiogenic dressings for chronic ulcer and burn wounds healing

Development of biomaterials supporting angiogenesis are highly desired in medical applications. In current work, chitosan and cellulose were cross-linked by using triethyl orthoformate and loaded with sulfur-doped titanium oxide nanoparticles. A readily available and inexpensive titanium oxide was added as a potential proangiogenic agent based on our group findings and other reports on metal oxide nanoparticles activity to stimulate angiogenesis. A simple freeze gelation method led to the development of flexible, foldable, and porous membranes. To investigate the chemical characteristics of the synthesized membranes, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used. Scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis was employed for surface morphological investigations. The cross-linked membranes showed higher degree of swelling capacity compared to the same material with titania-loaded nanoparticles in vitro. The synthesized materials showed higher degree of degradation in H₂ O₂ as compared to phosphate-buffered saline and lysozyme. Chorioallantoic membrane assay was done to investigate the angiogenic potential. Titanium oxide nanoparticles loaded membranes (CLHTS-5 wt%) exhibited the best degree of angiogenesis in comparison to the other tested materials. In CLHTS-5 wt% experimental group, a good level of attachment and ingrowth of several blood vessels was observed. Interestingly, the same tested group (CLHTS-5 wt%) had shown the increasing trend of cellular metabolic rate of the seeded cells from Day 0 to Day 7 in vitro. These findings were further confirmed by the decline in lactate dehydrogenase enzyme release which was monitored until 72 h, indicating the promising ability of this biomaterial in wound healing applications.

Injectable chitosan-quince seed gum hydrogels encapsulated with curcumin loaded-halloysite nanotubes designed for tissue engineering application

The goal of tissue engineering is to assemble functional constructs that restore, maintain, or improve damaged tissues or organs. Hydrogels formed with natural polymers display high potential in artificial scaffolds for tissue repair as they can resemble the extracellular matrices. Thus, the aim of this study was to design nanocomposite hydrogels of chitosan/oxidized-modified quince seed gum/curcumin-loaded in halloysite nanotubes (CS/OX-QSG/CUR-HNTs) for tissue engineering applications. The produced hydrogels were analyzed for thermal stability, degradation, swelling ratio, gelling time and mechanical properties. The results showed that with increasing content of OX-QSG, thermal stability, swelling ratio, and degradation rate of hydrogels were improved. Notably, the optimal CS/OX-QSG hydrogel with ratio of 25:75 exhibited rapid gelation behavior (<50 s) and improved compressive strength (3.96 ± 0.64 MPa), representing the suitable hydrogel for application in tissue engineering. The MTT test showed that these hydrogels were non-toxic and any reduction or stop of NIH-3 T3 cells growth wasn't observed over time. In addition, CS/OX-QSG 25:75 hydrogels containing CUR-HNTs with 10 and 30% content was significantly (P < 0.05) enhanced cell growth and proliferation (around 150%). Obtained results illustrated that CS/OX-QSG hydrogels with ratio of 25:75 and the content of 30% CUR-HNTs can be an effective scaffold for application in tissue engineering.
