Metal/metal oxide nanocomposites for bactericidal effect: A review

Many microbial species causing infectious disease all over the world became a social burden and creating threat among community. These microbes possess long lifetime, enhancing mortality and morbidity rate in affected organisms. In this condition, the treatment was ineffective and more chances of spreading of infection into other organisms. Hence, it is necessary to initiate infection control efforts and prevention activities against multidrug resistant microbes, to reduce the death rate of people. Seriously concerning towards this problem progress was shown in developing significant drugs with least side effects. Emergence of nanoparticles and its novelty showed effective role in targeting and destructing microbes well. Further, many research works have shown nanocomposites developed from nanoparticles coupled with other nanoparticles, polymers, carbon material acted as an exotic substance against microbes causing severe loss. However, metal and metal oxide nanocomposites have gained interest due to its small size and enhancing the surface contact with bacteria, producing damage to it. The bactericidal mechanism of metal and metal oxide nanocomposites involve in the production of reactive oxygen species which includes superoxide radical anions, hydrogen peroxide anions and hydrogen peroxide which interact with the cell wall of bacteria causing damage to the cell membrane in turn inhibiting the further growth of cell with leakage of internal cellular components, leading to death of bacteria. This review provides the detailed view on antibacterial activity of metal and metal oxide nanocomposite which possessed novelty due to its physiochemical changes.

Investigation on mercury removal and recovery based on enhanced adsorption by activated coke

This work is to systematically study the mercury-removal behavior of activated coke (AC), regeneration of spent AC by microwave treatment and subsequent recycling of Hg⁰. The powdery (AC) was obtained under coal-fired hot gas conditions in a drop-tube reactor. The adsorption mechanism and capacity of the AC for Hg⁰ removal in a H₂O + SO₂ + O₂ atmosphere were investigated. The regeneration of the AC by microwave heating and recovery of Hg⁰ were studied. The results showed that this AC preparation method can greatly simplify the process, and the AC's large surface area, developed pore structure, and abundant functional groups played a key role in the adsorption of Hg⁰. The adsorption mechanism and the optimum reaction conditions were determined, with a highest average Hg⁰-adsorption efficiency of 91% obtained at 70 °C in 3 h. Desorption of Hg⁰ was also studied, in which the alkaline-functional-group content and pore structure were enhanced, and S was detected by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in microwave-regenerated AC, which could improve the Hg⁰ removal efficiency increased to 96% after five adsorption/desorption cycles. The Hg⁰ could subsequently be recovered from the desorbed gas by condensation with an efficiency of 87.4% using ice-water.

Properties of multifunctional composite materials based on nanomaterials: a review

Composite materials are being used for high-end applications such as aviation technology, space ships, and heavy equipment manufacturing. The use of composite materials has been observed in recent advancements in the field of multifunctional composite materials (MFCMs). There is continuous progress related to improvements, innovations, and replacement of metals inspite of rigorous destructive and non-destructive testing, proving the toughness and lifelong durability of such materials. The present study aims to review the topics relevant to modern multifunctional composite materials. The reviewed articles mostly cover the field of MFCMs based on nanomaterials. The structural functions emphasize on the mechanical properties such as fracture toughness, strength, thermal stability, damping, stiffness, and tensile strength. The non-structural properties include biodegradability, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. The study has concluded that the applications of multifunctional nanoparticle-based composite materials and structures include durable but light-weight aircraft wings, components and structures of electric self-driving vehicles, and biomedical composite materials for drug delivery.

Remediation of mercury contaminated soil, water, and air: A review of emerging materials and innovative technologies

Mercury contamination in soil, water and air is associated with potential toxicity to humans and ecosystems. Industrial activities such as coal combustion have led to increased mercury (Hg) concentrations in different environmental media. This review critically evaluates recent developments in technological approaches for the remediation of Hg contaminated soil, water and air, with a focus on emerging materials and innovative technologies. Extensive research on various nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), nanosheets and magnetic nanocomposites, for mercury removal are investigated. This paper also examines other emerging materials and their characteristics, including graphene, biochar, metal organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as well as other materials such as clay minerals and manganese oxides. Based on approaches including adsorption/desorption, oxidation/reduction and stabilization/containment, the performances of innovative technologies with the aid of these materials were examined. In addition, technologies involving organisms, such as phytoremediation, algae-based mercury removal, microbial reduction and constructed wetlands, were also reviewed, and the role of organisms, especially microorganisms, in these techniques are illustrated.

Guar gum-crosslinked-Soya lecithin nanohydrogel sheets as effective adsorbent for the removal of thiophanate methyl fungicide

Rapid increase in use of fungicides for the agricultural and industrial purposes has marked the deterioration of water resources which ultimately affects the human life. Accordingly, various attempts have been made in the removal of these noxious compounds. In the same context, we are presenting biopolymers based nanohydrogel sheets; guar gum-crosslinked-Soya lecithin nanohydrogel sheets (GG-crosslinked-SY NHS) used for the effective removal of a fungicide; thiophanate methyl from aqueous solution. Guar gum and soya lecithin were employed as the biopolymers in the fabrication of nanohydrogel sheets due to their non- toxic nature, easy availability, cheapness and significant properties. Due to the presence of highly reactive functional groups onto the surface of GG-crosslinked-SY NHS, good adsorption results have been obtained. Maximum adsorption capacity of 59.205mg/g was observed with 20mg GG-crosslinked-SY NHS and 25ppm thiophanate methyl solution concentration as calculated from the Langmuir isotherm. Results showed that neutral pH favoured the adsorption process. Kinetics results were indicative of the physical interactions between the thiophanate methyl and GG-crosslinked-SY NHS surface. Thermodynamic results have shown the spontaneous and endothermic adsorption process.
