Graphene-based 3D lightweight cellular structures: Synthesis and applications

Three-Dimensional Printed Shape Memory Gels Based on a Structured Disperse System with Hydrophobic Cellulose Nanofibers

Inks for 3D printing were prepared by dispersing bacterial cellulose nanofibers (CNF) functionalized with methacrylate groups in a polymerizable deep eutectic solvent (DES) based on choline chloride and acrylic acid with water as a cosolvent. After 3D printing and UV-curing, the double-network composite gel consisting of chemically and physically crosslinked structures composed from sub-networks of modified CNF and polymerized DES, respectively, was formed. The rheological properties of inks, as well as mechanical and shape memory properties of the 3D-printed gels, were investigated in dynamic and static modes. It was shown that the optimal amount of water allows improvement of the mechanical properties of the composite gel due to the formation of closer contacts between the modified CNF. The addition of 12 wt% water results in an increase in strength and ultimate elongation to 11.9 MPa and 300%, respectively, in comparison with 5.5 MPa and 100% for an anhydrous system. At the same time, the best shape memory properties were found for an anhydrous system: shape fixation and recovery coefficients were 80.0 and 95.8%, respectively.

Controlled synthesis of solid-shelled non-spherical and faceted microbubbles

The ability to control the shape of hollow particles (e.g., capsules or bubbles) holds great promise for enhancing the encapsulation efficiency and mechanical/optical properties. However, conventional preparation methods suffer from a low yield, difficulty in controlling the shape, and a tedious production process, limiting their widespread application. Here, we present a method for fabricating polyhedral graphene oxide (GO)-shelled microbubbles with sharp edges and vertices, which is based on the microfluidic generation of spherical compound bubbles followed by shell deformation. Sphere-to-polytope deformation is a result of the shell instability due to gradual outward gas transport, which is dictated by Laplace pressure across the shell. The shape-variant behaviours of the bubbles can also be attributed to the compositional heterogeneity of the shells. In particular, the high degree of control of microfluidic systems enables the formation of non-spherical bubbles with various shapes; the structural motifs of the bubbles are easily controlled by varying the size and thickness of the mid-shell in compound bubbles, ranging from tetrahedra to octahedra. The strategy presented in this study provides a new route for fabricating 3D structured solid bubbles, which is particularly advantageous for the development of high-performance mechanical or thermal material applications.

Nanocellulose-Graphene Derivative Hybrids: Advanced Structure-Based Functionality from Top-down Synthesis to Bottom-up Assembly

There is an emerging endeavor of advanced structure-based functionality in the next-generation advanced functional materials inspired by hierarchical architecture for future technical applications. This review provides an impressive range roadmap for constructing advanced functional materials based on the nanocellulose-graphene derivative hybrids, from the top-down synthesis of their hierarchical materials to the bottom-up assembly of their nanoscale building blocks. First, the roadmap started from the top-down synthesis routes of nanocellulose-graphene hierarchical materials into their derivatives, where the pristine properties of nanoscale building blocks are still accessible and processable. Then, the stable-strong synergistic interfacial interactions between nanocellulose chains and graphene derivative nanosheets are uniquely well-suited in this roadmap for constructing scalable hybrid materials with interesting emergent properties. After that, the roadmap presented the bottom-up assembly approaches of these versatile nanoscale building blocks through self-assembly, templating, and mimicking of the bioinspired hierarchical structures toward advanced functional materials. Thereafter, toward understanding the specificity, superiority, and functionality of such hybrid materials, the roadmap discussed the properties and potential applications so far. Finally, the roadmap pointed out the key challenges and future outlooks, paving the way for comprehensive understanding and ideal designing of hybrid structures from nanocellulose and graphene derivatives.

Printed aerogels: chemistry, processing, and applications

As an extraordinarily lightweight and porous functional nanomaterial family, aerogels have attracted considerable interest in academia and industry in recent decades. Despite the application scopes, the modest mechanical durability of aerogels makes their processing and operation challenging, in particular, for situations demanding intricate physical structures. "Bottom-up" additive manufacturing technology has the potential to address this drawback. Indeed, since the first report of 3D printed aerogels in 2015, a new interdisciplinary research area combining aerogel and printing technology has emerged to push the boundaries of structure and performance, further broadening their application scope. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art of printed aerogels and presents a comprehensive view of their developments in the past 5 years, and highlights the key near- and mid-term challenges.
