Sleep Quality Aspects in Post-COVID-19 Patients

In this observational cohort study, sleep quality in post-COVID-19 patients was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire. This study aimed to examine aspects of sleep quality in patients who have undergone SARS-CoV-2 infection and if there is a pattern of progression or regression over time (6 months). We also observed and analyzed the results in order to identify any possible links between the severity of COVID-19 and sleep quality as measured by the PSQI questionnaire. The study group consisted of 65 adult patients with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection who were referred to a pulmonologist for evaluation. Sleep quality was impacted at a high rate in post-COVID-19 patients, quantified by a PSQI score ≥5. Out of 65 patients, 51% of them had scores greater than or equal to 5. Sleep was subjectively reported as unsatisfactory predominantly in mild and moderate COVID-19 patients. According to the PSQI score and a 6-month follow-up, many patients presented persistency in poor sleep quality. Investigation and individualized treatment of sleep disorders in post-COVID-19 patients should be part of the routine pneumological control, as improvement in sleep quality has an impact not only on the health but also on the psychological state of patients. Educating patients about the importance of sleep and sleep quality impairment should be a primary concern.

Schlafstörungen und Erschöpfungssyndrom bei Long-COVID-Syndrom: Fallbasierte Erfahrungen aus der neurologischen/schlafmedizinischen Rehabilitation

Schlafstörungen und ein klinisch signifikantes Erschöpfungssyndrom werden für das Long-COVID-Syndrom regelhaft beschrieben. Die pathophysiologischen Zusammenhänge sind weitergehend unbekannt. Die klinische Präsentation ist unterschiedlich und muss individuell betrachtet werden. Anhand von vier Fallbeispielen wird dargestellt, welche Symptome ein Long-COVID-Syndrom ausmachen und welche Therapieoptionen zur Verfügung stehen. Eine multimodale individualisierte Rehabilitation scheint geeignet, Betroffene wieder an die prämorbide Leistungsfähigkeit heranzuführen und eine erhebliche Reduktion von insomnischen Beschwerden zu erreichen.

Time to Sleep?-A Review of the Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Sleep and Mental Health

Sleep is intrinsically tied to mental and overall health. Short sleep duration accompanies the modern lifestyle, possibly reaching epidemic proportions. The pandemic and subsequent lockdowns determined a fundamental shift in the modern lifestyle and had profound effects on sleep and mental health. This paper aims to provide an overview of the relationship between sleep, mental health and COVID-19. Contrasting outcomes on sleep health have been highlighted by most reports during the pandemic in the general population. Consequently, while longer sleep durations have been reported, this change was accompanied by decreases in sleep quality and altered sleep timing. Furthermore, an increased impact of sleep deficiencies and mental health burden was generally reported in health care workers as compared with the adult general population. Although not among the most frequent symptoms during the acute or persistent phase, an increased prevalence of sleep deficiencies has been reported in patients with acute and long COVID. The importance of sleep in immune regulation is well known. Consequently, sleep deficiencies may influence multiple aspects of COVID-19, such as the risk, severity, and prognosis of the infection and even vaccine response.
