Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study assesses the degree of root curvature in patients with non-syndromic cleft lip and/or palate (NSCL/P). DESIGN Retrospective. Case-control study. SETTING Root curvature was assessed in lower premolars and molars in 800 panoramic radiographs: 400 from patients with cleft and 400 from healthy control individuals. Root curvature was classified according to its angulation, as well as its apical, medial, or coronal localization. RESULTS The frequency of mild curvature in the NSCL/P group compared to the control group was higher in premolars especially in the left second premolar in cleft palate (OR: 6.91; 95% CI: 3.23-14.77; P < .0001). The frequency of moderate curvature in molars was significantly higher in the cleft group, with the highest risk in the right first molar in the cleft lip group (OR: 2.74; 95% CI: 1.67-4.52; P < .0001). Inclination was more frequently observed in the apical third of the root in the group with cleft, whereas for the control group, the curvature was more frequent in the medial third. In patients with cleft, the OR of curvature in the apical third was significant in premolars (left lower second premolar: Cleft lip, OR: 1.91; 95% CI: 1.04-3.52; P = .03; right lower second premolar: Cleft lip, OR: 1.91, 95% CI: 1.04-3.50; P = .03, cleft lip and palate, OR: 1.75; 95% CI: 1.12-2.73; P = .01). CONCLUSION The results of the current study indicate differences in root curvature in patients with non-syndromic cleft lip and/or palate, which should be considered during the dental treatment planning of patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study aimed to evaluate mandibular asymmetry in unilateral posterior crossbite (UPXB) patients and compare the asymmetry between adolescents and adults with UPXB. METHODS This study included and analyzed cone-beam computed tomography scans of 125 subjects. The subjects were divided into a UPXB group and a control group according to the presence or absence of UPXB, and each group included adolescent patients (aged 10-15 years) and adult patients (aged 20-40 years). Linear, angular, and volumetric measurements were obtained to evaluate the asymmetries of the mandibles. RESULTS Both adolescent and adult patients in the UPXB group presented asymmetries in condylar unit length, ramal height, body length, and mediolateral ramal inclination (P <0.05). Adult patients with UPXB showed greater asymmetries than adolescents. Differences with condylar unit length, condylar unit width, ramal height, condylar unit volume, and hemimandibular volume were significantly greater in adult UPXB patients than adolescent UPXB patients (P <0.05). CONCLUSIONS The worsening of mandibular asymmetries in UPXB adults suggests that asymmetry in UPXB patients may progress over time; therefore, early treatment should be considered for UPXB adolescent patients. Further studies are still needed to evaluate the effectiveness of early treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the maxillary and mandibular vertical skeletal asymmetries, and the correlation between these asymmetries and occlusal cant in patients with unilateral cleft lip-palate (UCLP). METHODS Anteroposterior radiographs of 25 patients with UCLP (UCLP group, mean age: 20.98 ± 4.88 years) and 25 subjects without cleft (control group, mean age: 19 ± 2.86 years) were included. Independent samples t test, Mann-Whitney U test and Pearson correlation analysis were performed based on linear and angular measurements. RESULTS Lower facial horizontal asymmetry did not show statistically significant difference between the UCLP and control groups. However, vertical asymmetry of (a) the lateral cranial base (P = .014), (b) the nasomaxillary region (P < .001), (c) the maxillary dentoalveolus (P = .001), and (d) the lower face (P = .038) were all found to be significantly greater in UCLP group. The occlusal cant angle was also significantly greater in patients with UCLP compared to the controls (P = .016). While the occlusal cant angle was found to be correlated with the vertical asymmetry of the occlusal cant (r = 0.931, P < .001), maxillary cant angle was found to be correlated with the vertical asymmetry of the maxillary dentoalveolus (r = 0.655, P < .001). CONCLUSIONS There was no correlation between the occlusal cant and the vertical and horizontal skeletal asymmetries. Vertical asymmetries of the lower face and the medial cranial base were negatively correlated with the horizontal lower facial asymmetry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Craniofacial asymmetry is a common growth disorder often caused by unilateral chewing. Although an early orthodontic treatment would avoid surgical procedures later in life, the uncertainty of defining the accurate sagittal midplane potentially leads to misdiagnosis and therefore inaccurate orthodontic treatment plans. This novel study aims to 3D-diagnose craniofacial complex malformations in children with unilateral crossbite (UXB) considering a midplane which compensates the asymmetric morphology. METHODS The sagittal midplane of 20 children, fifteen of whom exhibited UXB, was computed by a PCA-based method which compensates the asymmetry mirroring the 3D models obtained from cone-beam computed tomography data. Once determined, one side of the data was mirrored using the computed midplane to visualize the malformations on the hard and soft tissues by 3D-computing the distances between both halves. Additionally, 31 skull's landmarks were manually placed in each model to study the principal variation modes and the significant differences in the group of subjects with and without UXB through PCA and Mann-Whitney U test analyses respectively. RESULTS Morphological 3D-analysis showed pronounced deformities and aesthetic implications for patients with severe asymmetry (jaw deviation > 0.8 mm) in whole craniofacial system, while initial signs of asymmetry were found indistinctly in the mandible or maxilla. We detected significant (p < 0.05) malformations for example in mandibular ramus length (0.0086), maxillary palate width (0.0481) and condylar head width (0.0408). Craniofacial malformations increased the landmarks' variability in the group of patients with UXB over the control group requiring 8 variation modes more to define 99% of the sample' variability. CONCLUSIONS Our findings demonstrated the viability of early diagnosis of craniofacial asymmetry through computing the accurate sagittal midplane which compensates the individual's asymmetrical morphology. Furthermore, this study provides important computational insights into the determination of craniofacial deformities which are caused by UXB, following some empirical findings of previous clinical studies. Hence, this computational approach can be useful for the development of new software in craniofacial surgery or for its use in biomedical research and clinical practice.

Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the mandibular hard and soft tissue measurements of unilateral and bilateral cleft lip and palate
patients with non-cleft individuals. Materials and Methods: The study sample comprised of lateral cephalograms of 45 subjects. Sample included 15 non-cleft (NC), 15 unilateral cleft lip
and palate (UCLP) and 15 bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) cases whose age were between 15 to 17. 1 angular 13 linear measurements were carried out using Arnett
and Gunson soft tissue cephalometric analysis and 4 angular measurements were calculated with Steiner Analysis. Results: Mandibular incisor inclinations relative to the occlusal plane (Md1-Md OP) were significantly greater and mandibular incisor projections
(Md1-TVL) were significantly retrusive in cleft subjects (p<0.05). Projection values pertaining to lower lip anterior (LLA-TVL), soft tissue B point (B’-TVL), and
soft tissue pogonion (Pog’-TVL) were significantly deficient as well in cleft patients (p<0.05). Sagittal position of the maxilla (SNA) (p<0.001) and
intermaxillary relation of the jaws (ANB) were significantly deficient in UCLP subjects (p<0.05) and BCLP individuals (p<0.01). LLA-TVL and B’-TVL correlated
with SNB in cleft patients (p<0.05). Conclusion: Decreased lower lip and chin projection values suggest that mandibular region of cleft patients should be taken into account in forming
the treatment plan to improve the esthetic outcome of orthodontic and plastic surgery interventions.

Abstract
Our study aimed to examine facial asymmetry in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palates (UCLP) using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and explore the factors responsible for lower facial asymmetry in these individuals. The experimental group included 21 adolescent patients with non-syndromic UCLP while the control group comprised 14 patients without any facial cleft defects. The maxillofacial regions of the patients in the two groups were scanned using CBCT, and the Mimics 10.01 software was used to analyze the images. Multiple linear stepwise regression analysis was used to explore the factors related to the deviation of the pogonion point (Pog). Comparison of the two groups showed that the position of the lateral point of the pyriform aperture and the length of the mandibular body exhibited significant asymmetry (P < 0.05). Pog in the UCLP group deviated to the cleft side (1.24 ± 2.28 mm), and was related to B6L(R) to Sagittal plane, CdL(R) to Sagittal plane, and U6L(R) to LS plane. We concluded that significant differences between the cleft and non-cleft sides existed only around the cleft, and not in the deeper regions of the maxillary complex. Functional adaption may be the main reason responsible for chin deviation in UCLP individuals. (J Oral Sci 58, 109-115, 2016).

Abstract
Introduction To evaluate, using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), both the condylar-fossa relationships and the mandibular and condylar asymmetries between unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) patients and non-cleft patients with class III skeletal relationship, and to investigate the factors of asymmetry contributing to chin deviation. Methods The UCLP and non-cleft groups consisted of 30 and 40 subjects, respectively, in mixed dentition with class III skeletal relationships. Condylar-fossa relationships and the dimensional and positional asymmetries of the condyles and mandibles were examined using CBCT. Intra-group differences were compared between two sides in both groups using a paired t-test. Furthermore, correlations between each measurement and chin deviation were assessed. Results It was observed that 90% of UCLP and 67.5% of non-cleft subjects had both condyles centered, and no significant asymmetry was found. The axial angle and the condylar center distances to the midsagittal plane were significantly greater on the cleft side than on the non-cleft side (P=0.001 and P=0.028, respectively) and were positively correlated with chin deviation in the UCLP group. Except for a larger gonial angle on the cleft side, the two groups presented with consistent asymmetries showing shorter mandibular bodies and total mandibular lengths on the cleft (deviated) side. The average chin deviation was 1.63 mm to the cleft side, and the average absolute chin deviation was significantly greater in the UCLP group than in the non-cleft group (P=0.037). Conclusion Compared with non-cleft subjects with similar class III skeletal relationships, the subjects with UCLP showed more severe lower facial asymmetry. The subjects with UCLP presented with more asymmetrical positions and rotations of the condyles on axial slices, which were positively correlated with chin deviation.
