Abstract
BACKGROUND The glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is a benign developmental cyst of the jaws that is characterized by a high recurrence rate. METHODS A systematic review is presented of reported cases, case series, and retrospective studies of recurrent cases of glandular odontogenic cysts, to determine the overall and detailed demographic features with documentation of the specific histologic features of the initial presentation of each cyst. Searches of detailed databases were carried out to identify articles published in the English language from 1988 to 2023. The variables were demographics, patient symptoms, cyst location, radiographic features, histopathological findings, type of treatment, and minimum eight months of follow-up. RESULTS Eighteen cases were identified: with an equal gender presentation of 50% females and 50% males. The average age was 44.7. The mean size was 3.5 cm. The most common location was in the anterior mandible in 50% (n = 9) of cases, followed by the posterior mandible 27.8% (n = 5). Most patients were asymptomatic 55.6% (n = 10). The most common histologic features at first diagnosis were mucous cells in 88.9% (n = 16), variable thickness with 83.3% (n = 15), eosinophilic cuboidal cells 88.9% (n = 16), microcysts 83.3% (n = 15), and clear cells 77.8% (n = 14) cases. CONCLUSION GOC has an aggressive behavior. Evidence was not conclusive to link any single or combination of histologic features to recurrence, and the strongest correlation for recurrence was the type of treatment. Since this is an uncommon cyst, more cases are needed. Follow-up should continue for at least five years, because recurrences were higher between years 3 and 5.

Abstract
In view of the surgical complexity of parapharyngeal space tumors involved, this paper summarized the disease data of patients with parapharyngeal space tumors involved in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the First Hospital of Shanxi Medical University from January 2015 to January 2021. It also summarized the surgical approach and mandibular management, so as to explore surgical strategies for different characteristics of parapharyngeal space tumors involved. A total of 49 patients, including 28 males and 21 females, median age 52 years (range 24-72 years). They were treated with four surgical approaches for tumor resection, 25 cervical approach, 5 cheek and neck approach, 3 transoral approach, and 16 cervical-maxillary approach. Among the patients treated with cervical-maxillary approach, 3 patients were treated with mandible square resection, and 6 patients were treated with temporary mandible dissection. Seven cases were treated with tumor resection and partial mandibular resection. There are various surgical approaches and mandibular management methods involving tumors in the parapharyngeal space, and clinical decisions should be made based on tumor diameter, location, boundary, blood supply and pathological types.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cementoblastoma is a rare odontogenic tumor characterized by the formation of osteocementum-like tissue on a tooth root directly by neoplastic cementoblasts. Although it is categorized as benign, it has a high potential for growth with a certain degree of recurrence risk. However, there are only a few studies describing the features of recurrent cementoblastoma. The diagnosis of recurrent cementoblastoma is challenging not only due to its cytological atypia but also because of its large size and multicentric growth pattern. These characteristics suggest a potential for malignancy. CASE PRESENTATION A 29-year-old woman was transferred to our university dental hospital complaining of swelling of the right mandible. She had a history of enucleation of cementoblastoma associated with the third molar of the right mandible. Five years after the initial treatment, imaging demonstrated well-circumscribed multicentric radiopaque lesions in the same area. Histologically, the lesion consisted of osteocementum-like tissue rimmed with polygonal or plump tumor cells. Several cells were large epithelioid cells with bizarre nucleoli, which may be reminiscent of malignant tumors. Otherwise, there were no apparent malignant findings, including proliferative activity or atypical mitotic figure. Besides, tumor cells were positive for c-FOS, a marker of osteoblastoma and cementoblastoma. Eventually, the patient was diagnosed with recurrent cementoblastoma. CONCLUSIONS Pathological analyses of this case suggested that the recurrent event in the cementoblastoma altered its growth pattern and tumor cell shape. Moreover, in the case of enucleation surgery, long-term follow-up is important because there is some recurrent risk of cementoblastoma, although it is not high.

Abstract
Radicular cysts are the most common cystic lesions in the oral cavity, and have a rare occurrence in the primary dentition. We report a case of radicular cyst of mandible in child by multimodal imaging including panoramic radiography, CT, and MR imaging. A 7-year-old girl presented with swelling and without pain, and hypoesthesia on the right side of the mandible. On clinical examination, an expansive lesion with undulation was found to the buccal cortex of the right side of the mandible. Panoramic radiograph showed a unilocular radiolucency with well-defined margin, displaced tooth, and root resorption in the right mandible. Regarding CT imaging, axial soft tissue algorithm CT and bone tissue algorithm CT showed a low-attenuation internal structure and expansion of the buccal cortex of the right side of the mandible. Three-dimensional-CT showed expansion of the buccal cortex of the right side of the mandible. Multiplanar reformation imaging showed displaced tooth, root resorption, and expansion of the buccal cortex of the right side of the mandible. On T1-weighted image, the expansive lesion showed low signal intensity, and T2-weighted and STIR images revealed high signal intensity. A partial biopsy of the mandibular region was performed. Histopathological diagnosis was radicular cyst caused by apical periodontitis with abscess. This case suggests that multimodal imaging, especially CT and MR imaging, could be effective for evaluating mandibular lesions in child.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Intraosseous xanthomas are rare benign lesions sometimes associated with excess lipid production. Xanthoma of the jaw bones (XJB) was first reported in 1964, and fewer than 50 cases have been reported in the English literature to date. The etiopathogenesis of XJB is highly suggestive of a reactive process or a metabolic condition. METHOD Seven cases of XJBs were retrieved from the archives of 4 oral and maxillofacial pathology services. Clinical, radiographic and histopathologic features of all these cases were retrospectively analyzed. Immunohistochemical (IHC) stains for S100 and CD68 were performed. RESULTS All seven cases involved the mandible. Patients' age ranged between 13 and 69 years with an evenly distributed female to male ratio. One patient had a medical history of hyperlipidemia, but the medical and dental histories of the others were unremarkable. For most cases, XJB was an incidental finding discovered during routine radiographic examination. Swelling and cortical expansion were noted in a few cases. Radiographically, cases typically presented as either well-defined multilocular or unilocular lesions, which were either radiolucent or mixed radiolucent/radiopaque. All the lesions were treated with surgical curettage and no recurrence was observed during subsequent follow-ups. Each of the seven cases exhibited sheets of foamy macrophages. The diagnosis is established by exclusion of entities with overlapping microscopic features and involved correlation with the clinical, histological, radiographic and IHC profiles. Immunohistochemically, all the cases expressed diffuse positivity for CD68 and were negative for S100. CONCLUSION XJB is a rare lesion of unknown etiology, which may mimic other benign or reactive jaw lesions. Due to its rarity and the potential diagnostic challenges it presents, clinicians must remain vigilant and consider CXJ in their differential when assessing radiolucent jaw anomalies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare long-term results of different treatment modalities in central giant cell granuloma of the maxillofacial-skeleton. Primary resection may result in major defects. Alternative treatments include pharmacological agents. As yet there has been no consensus on the use of the variety of treatment options, and few studies have reported clarifying long-term results. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study on 22 patients with 25 lesions evaluated clinical, radiological and histological features, treatment preformed and lesion recurrence. Success was defined as regression/calcification and failure as recurrence, progression or un-responsiveness. RESULTS Of the presenting patients, 77% were under age 40. Lesion prevalence was higher in the anterior mandible and left posterior maxilla. Most cases exhibited pain, tooth-mobility or mucosal-expansion. The appearance was predominantly unilocular in the maxilla and multilocular in the mandible, which also exhibited higher prevalence of cortical perforation. Up to 80% of lesions were classified as aggressive. Intralesional steroids/calcitonin were used in 7 cases. Mean follow-up was 39.8 months. Two cases showed recurrence. In 71% of the cases treated pharmacologically, calcification/regression were observed. CONCLUSIONS Our analysis indicates better outcomes using a combined approach, including both pharmacological and surgical treatments in large aggressive lesions. Pharmacological treatment resulted in decreased size or well-defined lesions, thus reducing the need for extensive bone resection. Dual treatment with corticosteroids and calcitonin showed no superior outcomes, but a larger cohort should be assessed. CLINICAL RELEVANCE There are several protocols for treatment of central-giant-cell-granuloma lesions, but most are not fully established. It is important to report results that contribute to the establishment of proven protocols. This report attempts to establish the relevance of the combined approach: pharmacological treatment followed by surgical resection.

Abstract
Radiation exposure is a major health concern due to bone involvement including mandible, causing deleterious effects on bone metabolism, and healing with an increasing risk of infection and osteoradionecrosis. This study aims to investigate the radiotherapy-induced microstructural changes in the human mandible by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Mandibular cortical bone biopsies were obtained from control, irradiated, and patients with osteoradionecrosis (ORN). Bone samples were prepared for light microscopy and SEM. The SEM images were analyzed for the number of osteons, number of Haversian canal (HC), diameter of osteon (D.O), the diameter of HC (D.HC), osteonal wall thickness (O.W.Th), number of osteocytes, and number of osteocytic dendrites. The number of osteons, D.O, D.HC, O.W.Th, the number of osteocytes, and osteocytic dendrites were significantly decreased in both irradiated and ORN compared to controls (p < .05). The number of HCs decreased in irradiated and ORN bone compared to the control group. However, this was statistically not significant. The deleterious effect of radiation continues gradually altering the bone quality, structure, cellularity, and vascularity in the long term (>5 years mean radiation biopsy interval). The underlying microscopic damage in bone increases its susceptibility and contributes further to radiation-induced bone changes or even ORN.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ameloblastic carcinoma (AC) is the most common odontogenic malignancy, constituting approximately 30% of cases in this category. Literature is sparse on malignant odontogenic neoplasms, with a large proportion of current knowledge derived from case reports or small case series. METHODS A systematic review of case series/case reports of AC was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) Statement guidelines. Demographic and clinical information, including duration of the lesion, location, clinical presentation and radiologic features, were analysed. Additionally, the origin of the lesion (primary/secondary), Ki-67 proliferation index, treatment performed, metastasis, tumour recurrence and prognosis were collected for analysis. RESULTS A total of 126 studies, including 285 individual cases of AC, were included in this review. Patients presented with a near-equal distribution of painless and painful swellings. ACs presented at a median age of 45 years, with a male-to-female ratio of 1:2. The mandible was most frequently involved, with rare cases extending to involve more than one region, including crossing the midline. Although most lesions presented with poorly-demarcated borders (52.6%), unilocular lesions with well-demarcated borders (47.4%) comprised a substantial number in the sample. The proliferation index was only reported in 27 cases, with a mean score of 42% and a wide range. The probability of tumour recurrence increased, and the survival probability decreased with prolonged follow-up duration. CONCLUSION This study provides more comprehensive, up-to-date descriptive data on these rare odontogenic malignancies, aiding clinicians and Pathologists with the diagnosis and surgeons in their management of cases.

Abstract
The lateralization of the inferior alveolar nerve, or LIAN procedure, may be a surgical consideration for implant-prosthetic rehabilitation in the edentulous mandibular posterior region. This technique can be advantageous in that it does not require a donor site and allows for the immediate placement of an implant, potentially leading to reduced morbidity, healing time, and costs. Although such risks as altered sensory nerve function and weakening of the mandibular body are associated with the LIAN procedure, it is a viable alternative to various regenerative techniques to rehabilitate a patient with an implant-supported fixed prosthesis.

Abstract
Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is an uncommon bone tumor that originates from the mesenchymal tissue and despite being benign, exhibits aggressive behavior locally. The following report describes the case of a 7-year-old boy with a rapidly enlarging swelling on the right side of the mandible. After a thorough clinical examination, radiographic imaging, and histopathological analysis, the diagnosis of DF was confirmed. Treatment planning was formulated considering both the tumor's tendency for local recurrence and the patient's well-being. Due to the patient's young age, segmental resection was not deemed appropriate, and an aggressive curettage and enucleation of the lesion followed by the bone graft was performed instead. The patient was kept under close follow-up for the first month of post-surgery and later reviewed after 3, 6, 9, and 12 months, respectively. Good bone healing was observed on radiographs. The patient did not show any signs of recurrence based on clinical or radiographic assessments and did not exhibit any neurosensory deficits as well.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Facial infiltrating lipomatosis (FIL) is a rare condition characterized by congenital facial enlargement. Beyond its impact on physical appearance, FIL can also impair essential facial functions such as swallowing, chewing, vision, and breathing, imposing a substantial physiological and psychological burden. Currently, fewer than 80 cases of FIL have been reported, and the characteristics and management strategies for FIL remain unclear. METHODS We reviewed the clinical, surgical, and radiological records of 39 FIL patients who were treated at our center. Of these, genetic testing was performed for 21 patients. RESULTS Aberrant overgrowth involves subcutaneous fat, bones, muscles, glands, tongue, lips, and teeth. Epidermal nevi could be observed in the dermatomes innervated by the three branches of the trigeminal nerve, with the highest frequency seen in the dermatome of the mandibular branch. Four patients exhibited concurrent hemimegalencephaly (HMEG), with one case presenting HMEG on the opposite side of the FIL. Nineteen patients were confirmed to harbor the PIK3CA mutation. Thirty-three patients underwent surgical procedures, with a post resection recurrence rate of approximately 25%. CONCLUSIONS A variety of maxillofacial structures may be involved in FIL. PIK3CA mutations are important pathogenic factors. Emerging targeted therapies could present an additional treatment avenue in the future. However, surgery currently remains the predominant treatment choice for FIL. The timing and modality of surgery should be individually customized, taking into account each patient's unique circumstances. Notably, there is a significant possibility of postoperative recurrence during childhood and adolescence, necessitating early strategic planning of disease management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The range of mandibular invasion by a tumour needs to be determined accurately to minimize unnecessary damage to the mandible. This study aimed to compare tumour boundary lines on computed tomography/magnetic resonance (CT/MR) images with those from pathological findings during the preoperative assessment of mandibular invasion by oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). By comparing the methods, the potential of CT/MR for this application could be further elucidated. METHODS Eight patients with OSCC were imaged with CT/MR, mandibular specimens were collected, and the material site was measured. Haematoxylin-eosin staining was used for histopathological assessment. The presence and boundaries of bone invasion were evaluated. The CT/MR and histopathological boundaries of bone invasion were delineated and merged to compare and calculate the deviation of CT/MR and histopathological boundaries using the Fréchet distance. RESULTS The mean Fréchet distance between the CT and pathological tumour boundaries was 2.69 mm (standard error 0.46 mm), with a minimum of 1.18 mm, maximum of 3.64 mm, median of 3.10 mm, and 95% confidence interval of 1.40-3.97 mm. The mean Fréchet distance between the tumour boundaries on the MR and pathological images was 3.07 mm (standard error 0.56 mm), with a minimum of 1.53 mm, maximum of 4.74 mm, median of 2.90 mm, and 95% confidence interval of 1.53-4.61 mm. CONCLUSIONS CT/MR imaging can provide an effective preoperative assessment of mandibular invasion of OSCC. Pathology images can be positioned on CT/MR scans with the help of computer software to improve the accuracy of the findings. The introduction of the Fréchet distance to compare tumour boundary lines is conducive to computer image diagnosis of tumour invasion of jaw boundaries.

Abstract
Pycnodysostosis is an ultra-rare osteosclerotic skeletal disorder characterized by short stature, susceptibly to fractures, acroosteolysis of the distal phalanges, and craniofacial features (frontal bossing, prominent nose, obtuse mandibular angle, micrognathia). Dental abnormalities (delayed eruption of teeth, hypodontia, malocclusion, dental crowding, persistence of deciduous teeth, enamel hypoplasia, and increased caries) are also frequent; due to bone metabolism alteration, the patients have an increased risk for jaw osteomyelitis, especially after tooth extraction or mandible fracture. Other complications are obstructive sleep apnea, endocrine alterations and cytopenia. Pycnodysostosis is caused by biallelic loss of function variants in CTSK gene, coding the lysosomal protease cathepsin K. CTSK is involved in the degradation of bone matrix proteins, such as type I and type II collagen. In pycnodysostosis, this degradation is decreased, leading to increased bone density and bone fragility with pathological fractures and poor healing. We present a clinical report of a female adult patient with typical pycnodysostosis phenotype. At the age of 52 years, she had a pathological spontaneous fracture of the right mandible complicated by osteonecrosis, treated with load bearing osteosynthesis. The direct sequencing of CTSK gene revealed the presence of the pathogenic homozygous variant c.746T>A, (p.Ile249Asn), that confirmed the diagnosis of pycnodysostosis. We also review the literature case series published to date, that suggest to always consider the diagnosis of pycnodysostosis in case of osteosclerosis, even in the absence of brachydactyly or short stature. This report details the natural history of the disease in this patient, from childhood to adulthood, and highlights the importance of a quality of life assessment. In addition, we describe a case of mandibular osteonecrosis and spontaneous fracture in pycnodysostosis, drawing attention on the maxillofacial complications in these patients and on the importance of a personalized follow-up.

Abstract
Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is a rare developmental odontogenic cyst from the cell rests of Serres. GOC is locally aggressive with a tendency toward recurrence. The most common site of occurrence is the anterior mandible with an asymptomatic presentation. Radiographically, it presents as unilocular or multilocular radiolucency. It bears histopathological resemblance to low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma. We report two cases of GOC occurring in a 16-year-old and a 33-year-old male patient with a review of the clinical presentation, histopathological features, and diagnostic aspects of GOC reported so far in literature.

Abstract
The study aimed to analyze bone regeneration in critical-size defects using hybrid scaffolds biomechanically adapted to the specific defect and adding the growth factor rhBMP-2. For this animal study, ten minipigs underwent bilateral defects in the corpus mandibulae and were subsequently treated with novel cylindrical hybrid scaffolds. These scaffolds were designed digitally to suit the biomechanical requirements of the mandibular defect, utilizing finite element analysis. The scaffolds comprised zirconium dioxide-tricalcium phosphate (ZrO2-TCP) support struts and TCP foam ceramics. One scaffold in each animal was loaded with rhBMP-2 (100 μg/cm³), while the other served as an unloaded negative control. Fluorescent dyes were administered every 2 weeks, and computed tomography (CT) scans were conducted every 4 weeks. Euthanasia was performed after 3 months, and samples were collected for examination using micro-CT and histological evaluation of both hard and soft tissue. Intravital CT examinations revealed minor changes in radiographic density from 4 to 12 weeks postoperatively. In the group treated with rhBMP-2, radiographic density shifted from 2513 ± 128 (mean ± SD) to 2606 ± 115 Hounsfield units (HU), while the group without rhBMP-2 showed a change from 2430 ± 131 to 2601 ± 67 HU. Prior to implantation, the radiological density of samples measured 1508 ± 30 mg HA/cm³, whereas post-mortem densities were 1346 ± 71 mg HA/cm³ in the rhBMP-2 group and 1282 ± 91 mg HA/cm³ in the control group (p = 0.045), as indicated by micro-CT measurements. The histological assessment demonstrated successful ossification in all specimens. The newly formed bone area proportion was significantly greater in the rhBMP-2 group (48 ± 10%) compared with the control group without rhBMP-2 (42 ± 9%, p = 0.03). The mean area proportion of remaining TCP foam was 23 ± 8% with rhBMP-2 and 24 ± 10% without rhBMP-2. Successful bone regeneration was accomplished by implanting hybrid scaffolds into critical-size mandibular defects. Loading these scaffolds with rhBMP-2 led to enhanced bone regeneration and a uniform distribution of new bone formation within the hybrid scaffolds. Further studies are required to determine the adaptability of hybrid scaffolds for larger and potentially segmental defects in the maxillofacial region.

Abstract
AIM Investigating the prevalence of mandibular ORN in a single Swedish Oncology Center. METHODS A total of 450 patients, treated with radiotherapy for squamous cell carcinoma in the oropharynx between 2004 and 2014 were included. Three different techniques of radiotherapy were studied. ORN diagnosis was set when clinical signs according to Marx were observed, or if radiological signs were staged according to Schwartz and Kagan. RESULTS Using the staging system, 90 patients (20%) were diagnosed with ORN. The mean age of the ORN patients was 56.6 years, the older the patient the lower the risk of developing ORN (p = .01). The risk of developing ORN for patients receiving Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy was lower compared to patients treated with the other techniques in the multivariable analysis. Brachytherapy significantly increases the risk of ORN. The risk of ORN increased by 8% each year after radiation (p = .04). The mean time to the ORN diagnosis was 3.9 years. In the multivariate analysis, the risk of ORN increased by 13% each year after radiation (p = .0013). CONCLUSION The mean radiation dose was of greater importance for the risk of ORN than the maximum dose. Elderly people with oropharyngeal cancer were less prone to develop ORN.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate a deep learning model capable of autonomously detecting and segmenting radiolucent lesions in the lower jaw by utilizing You Only Look Once (YOLO) v8. Materials and Methods: This study involved the analysis of 226 lesions present in panoramic radiographs captured between 2013 and 2023 at the Clinical Hospital Dubrava and the School of Dental Medicine, University of Zagreb. Panoramic radiographs included radiolucent lesions such as radicular cysts, ameloblastomas, odontogenic keratocysts (OKC), dentigerous cysts and residual cysts. To enhance the database, we applied techniques such as translation, scaling, rotation, horizontal flipping and mosaic effects. We have employed the deep neural network to tackle our detection and segmentation objectives. Also, to improve our model's generalization capabilities, we conducted five-fold cross-validation. The assessment of the model's performance was carried out through metrics like Intersection over Union (IoU), precision, recall and mean average precision (mAP)@50 and mAP@50-95. Results: In the detection task, the precision, recall, mAP@50 and mAP@50-95 scores without augmentation were recorded at 91.8%, 57.1%, 75.8% and 47.3%, while, with augmentation, were 95.2%, 94.4%, 97.5% and 68.7%, respectively. Similarly, in the segmentation task, the precision, recall, mAP@50 and mAP@50-95 values achieved without augmentation were 76%, 75.5%, 75.1% and 48.3%, respectively. Augmentation techniques led to an improvement of these scores to 100%, 94.5%, 96.6% and 72.2%. Conclusions: Our study confirmed that the model developed using the advanced YOLOv8 has the remarkable capability to automatically detect and segment radiolucent lesions in the mandible. With its continual evolution and integration into various medical fields, the deep learning model holds the potential to revolutionize patient care.

Abstract
The radicular cyst is the most common odontogenic cyst and is caused by inflammation. It can become atypically large, although the size of the radiographic osteolysis says nothing about the entity of the lesion. This case shows an unusually large multilocular radicular cyst expanding buccally from tooth 46 in a patient with severe autism who can only be treated under general anesthesia. The clinical and radiological picture as well as the intraoperative situation was more indicative of an aggressive cyst or benign tumor. The lesion was surgically completely removed and the teeth 46, 47 and 48 were extracted because of poor compliance and prognosis. Histopathology revealed a radicular cyst. There were no postoperative complications. After eight months, the lesions had almost completely reossified.

Abstract
Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma (PTC) primarily metastasizes via regional lymphatics making its spread to the oral cavity exceedingly rare. Although this disease remains the most common endocrine malignancy, comprising roughly 85%-90% of all thyroid cancers, its occurrence within the oral cavity happens in less than 1% of oral malignancies. This study identifies a case involving a 77-year-old male with a history of well-differentiated PTC that was initially treated with a total thyroidectomy and adjuvant radioactive iodine. Five years after his initial treatment, surveillance imaging demonstrated a 3 cm expansile mass of the left mandible. An incisional biopsy then confirmed the diagnosis of metastatic PTC. A segmental resection of his mandible was completed with final reconstruction utilizing a fibula free flap. Given the limited number of cases involving metastatic spread of PTC to the oral cavity, a standardized treatment algorithm does not exist. Thus, this case serves to provide a documented report of this rare occurrence and to review literature that may help other clinicians treat patients with this malignancy type. There remains a need for future studies to create risk stratification models for patients with metastatic PTC that consider margin analysis, genetic characteristics, and risk factors to tailor individual treatment plans.

Abstract
Lowe syndrome (LS) is a rare disease (1:500,000) with X-linked recessive inheritance involving the kidneys, eyes, and nervous system. A Mexican 25-year-old male patient presented for diagnosis of multiple radiolucent lesions observed on routine radiographic examination. General aspects revealed cognitive delay, eye alterations, and kidney involvement, which support the diagnosis of LS. Radiolucent well-delimited lesions were observed in both mandibular angle and symphysis. Under general anesthesia, incisional biopsy and decompression were performed. Histological aspects led to diagnosing odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) for all lesions. The lesions in the right and left mandibular angles were decompressed, and the symphyseal lesion was enucleated. A 2-month follow-up shows the bone healing process. There are few reports detailing oral findings in LS. Here, we reported the first case of multiple OKC in a patient with LS. In addition, we performed a literature review on odontogenic lesions in patients affected by LS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The intraosseous schwannoma (IS) is a benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor postulated to arise de novo or from nerve fibers in preexisting nutrient canals. ISs are uncommon and comprise less than 1% of neoplasms originating in bone. We herein present two cases of mandibular schwannomas-the first case was a 66-year-old female with a four-month history of pain and pressure associated with an anterior mandibular radiolucency, and the second case was an asymptomatic 12-year-old female with separate radiolucencies of her mandibular symphysis and right posterior mandible. Incisional biopsies of all three lesions showed a benign spindle cell neoplasm with histologic features of a schwannoma; the tumor cells were strongly reactive for S-100. The patients underwent complete enucleation of their lesions and are without evidence of disease at ten months and five years, respectively. METHODS A systematic review was undertaken to evaluate the diagnostic features, treatment, and patient outcomes of gnathic schwannomas. RESULTS A total of 93 cases were identified with the following demographic findings: predominance in females (57%); average age of occurrence of 37.3 years (8 to 77 years); mean size of 3.6 cm; and involvement of the mandibular body (37.6%), mandibular body and ramus (18.3%), and anterior mandible (18.3%). The predominant clinical sign was swelling (69.9%), and the most common radiographic presentation was a radiolucency (94.6%) with well-defined borders (72%). CONCLUSION All cases were treated surgically, with an average follow-up interval of 22.9 months and a recurrence rate of 5.4.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To utilize standardized clinical veterinary methods to analyze dental health in a series of Roman dog maxillae and mandibles and to compare results to modern clinical data. MATERIALS 28 skulls of juvenile and adult dogs from three archaeological sites in Switzerland and Germany dating to the Roman period. METHODS Standardized examination was carried out, which included metric radiographic assessment to diagnose oral pathology and estimate age at death. In one case, CT analysis was undertaken. RESULTS The estimated average age at death was between three and four years old. Tooth fracture, periodontal disease, the presence of non-vital teeth, and brachycephalic skull form were found in the sample. Tooth resorption was unexpectedly noted. CONCLUSION The study provides valuable insights into the dental health of dogs in the Roman era. Compared to modern dogs, Roman dogs examined in this study appear to have a shorter lifespan but display a high rate of pathological dental disease, while disease patterns were very similar to those of modern dogs. Dogs with pronounced brachycephalic features were found. SIGNIFICANCE This pilot study is the first to use standardized clinical examination and recording techniques to assess dental health in dogs from archaeological contexts. It provides insight into the dental health of Roman era dogs and offers data upon which cross-populational studies can be initiated. LIMITATIONS The sample size and geographic location of the archaeological sites were limited. SUGGESTIONS FOR FURTHER RESEARCH Subsequent standardized studies, preferably in as many different Roman Empire regions as possible, are recommended.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe clinical and imaging features and surgical treatment of equine mandibular aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) with β-tricalcium phosphate (TCP). ANIMALS 3 horses (cases 1, 2, and 3) and 1 pony (case 4) with histologically confirmed ABC. CLINICAL PRESENTATION All cases had mandibular swelling with intact adjacent skin. Cases 1 to 3 had a body condition score of 3/5 and case 4 had 2/5 and showed quidding during mastication and, at oral examination, large interdental spaces and loose elements adjacent to the swelling. Radiography or CT was performed in all cases. In cases 1, 3, and 4, an expansile septate cystic space-occupying lesion with mass effect on the adjacent cortices and teeth was seen without compact bone destruction. Case 2 showed a heterogeneous osteolytic mass with multifocal cortical lysis and interruption. Case 4 had severe dental abnormalities of deciduous and precursors of permanent teeth. ABCs were surgically treated and filled with only TCP (case 3) or in combination with autologous bone marrow (cases 1, 2, and 4). RESULTS Cases 1 through 3 showed an uneventful reduction in ABC size with increased opacity/attenuation. In case 4, a surgical site infection occurred. After removal of TCP remnants, the ABC healed satisfactorily, but remaining dental abnormalities necessitated dietary adjustments to maintain an acceptable body condition score. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Treatment of ABCs with TCP had a favorable outcome and good long-term prognosis. In young specimens, the expansile effect on the development and eruption of neighboring teeth can influence and determine final functionality of the diseased dental quadrant.

Abstract
Ameloblastoma is the most common benign odontogenic tumor with local invasion and high recurrence, which generally occurs in the jaw bones. Hypercalcemia is a common paraneoplastic syndrome that is commonly observed in patients with malignancies but rarely encountered in patients with benign tumors. Thus far, not many cases of ameloblastoma with hypercalcemia have been reported, and the pathogenic mechanism has not been studied in depth. This paper presents a case report of a 26-year-old male diagnosed with giant ameloblastoma of the mandible, accompanied by rare hypercalcemia. Additionally, a review of the relevant literature is conducted. This patient initially underwent marsupialization, yet this treatment was not effective, which indicated that the selection of the appropriate operation is of prime importance for improving the prognosis of patients with ameloblastoma. The tumor not only failed to shrink but gradually increased in size, accompanied by multiple complications including hypercalcemia, renal dysfunction, anemia, and cachexia. Due to the contradiction between the necessity of tumor resection and the patient's poor systemic condition, we implemented a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meeting to better evaluate this patient's condition and design an individualized treatment strategy. The patient subsequently received a variety of interventions to improve the general conditions until he could tolerate surgery, and finally underwent the successful resection of giant ameloblastoma and reconstruction with vascularized fibular flap. No tumor recurrence or distance metastasis was observed during 5 years of follow-up. Additionally, the absence of hypercalcemia recurrence was also noted.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Compare recognized microscopic parameters, including variations in width, plaque-like thickenings, intra-epithelial microcysts, clefts, mucous, hob-nail, ciliated and clear cells, between glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) and GOC-like cysts, investigate the extent of cyst circumference exhibiting these features, and inflammation. MATERIALS AND METHODS Archival records of cysts with histological features of GOC evaluated between 2000 and2020 were retrieved. Slides were revised, and the expression of features throughout the cyst wall was analyzed. Cysts with at least 5 features were classified as GOC, cysts with 3-4 features as GOC-like. RESULTS The study included 74 cysts, 47 males M, 25 females (2 unknown gender), aged 19-81 years, 62 (83.8%) GOC, 12 (16.2%) GOC-like. Mandible was involved in 44 (59.5%), maxilla in 30 (40.5%), 18 (25%) were associated with unerupted teeth. Cyst classified as GOC had significantly higher rates of all parameters investigated, (except ciliated and clear cells), than GOC-like cysts (p ≤ 0.05). 26 (40.6%) cases showed GOC features in >50% of cyst circumference, 21 (32.8%) involved 25-50%, 17 (26.6%) <25%. More than 50% circumference involvement was highly and independently predictive for a diagnosis of GOC, <25% was highly and independently predictive for GOC-like (p = 0.003). Hobnail cells (p = 0.008) and plaque-like thickenings (p = 0.038) were significantly more frequent in inflamed cysts. CONCLUSION Besides the number and type of histological features, GOC can be characterized by their distribution within the cyst circumference (focal Vs diffuse), and it may serve as a new diagnostic aid. It is suggested that GOC and GOC-like may represent a single spectrum.

Abstract
Odontogenic tumours are uncommon neoplasms in domestic animals, mostly solitary and locally infiltrative, but rarely metastatic. We report the case of a 13-year-old neutered male cat presented with a mandibular gingival neoformation. A computed tomography scan revealed an irregular neoformation with marked post-contrast enhancement, associated with lysis of the incisive bone and mandibular symphysis. Histologically, the oral mucosa and mandibular bone were infiltrated by a neoplasm consisting of a mixed population of odontogenic epithelium admixed with bundles of odontogenic ectomesenchyme, multifocally associated with hard tissue deposition. A spindloid cell component had metastasized to the right mandibular lymph node. The epithelial component was immunoreactive for cytokeratins (CK) 5/6, CK 14, pancytokeratin (CK AE1/AE3) and p63; the ectomesenchymal component was vimentin positive. A final diagnosis of ameloblastic fibro-odontosarcoma with bone invasion and lymph node metastasis was made. The findings indicate the metastatic potential of this rare tumour.

Abstract
Recurrent benign gingival lesions occurring in the anterior dentition are clinical dilemmas. While complete removal of such lesions is required to prevent recurrence, this can result in a poor esthetic outcome. Relative to this conundrum, this report discusses the diagnosis, psychologic management, and clinical treatment of two patients with recurring lesions on the facial gingiva of the mandibular and maxillary incisors, respectively. Patient A, a 55-year-old woman, presented with a recurrent peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF); Patient B, a 76-year-old man, presented with a recurrent pyogenic granuloma (PG). Both patients underwent multiple procedures and were ultimately treated without lesion recurrence. The efficacious surgical treatment of recurrent gingival lesions like POF and PG requires an aggressive approach involving lesion removal of the lesion as well as a 1.0- to 2.0-mm margin of normal tissue, underlying alveolar bone, and associated periodontal ligament (PDL). The rationale for this approach stresses the potential periodontal and esthetic ramifications that were considered. In summary, when recurrent benign gingival lesions are localized to the anterior part of the mouth, the approach to their surgical removal should be modified to minimize the extent of gingival recession and other potential esthetic issues.

Abstract
A 131-day-old male Japanese Black calf presented with a swollen right cheek from birth. Imaging examination revealed a cyst under the right buccal area and debris-containing fluid inside the cyst, and puncture aspiration revealed a mildly cloudy fluid containing hair and tissue fragments. Histological examination of the excised cyst revealed stratified squamous epithelium with skin appendages in the cyst wall, which was diagnosed as a dermoid cyst. In addition, some submandibular gland tissue was found within the cyst wall. After removal of the cyst, there was swelling in the same area, which resolved with steroid administration. Surgical treatment of buccal dermoid cysts should be performed with caution to avoid damage to adjacent salivary gland tissue.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the cystic changes in the radiographically normal dental follicle associated with impacted mandibular third molar. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study was conducted on 80 patients. Samples were selected using a convenient sampling technique from the patients who had impacted mandibular third molars in Pell and Gregory's positions B and C, with follicular space less than 2.5 mm in diameter. After surgical removal of an impacted tooth, the dental follicle was sent for histopathologic evaluation. RESULTS Pathologic alterations were found in 19% of cases out of 80 samples. Odontogenic keratocystic and dentigerous cystic changes were found in 7% of cases. A statistically significant cystic alteration was found in female patients and distoangular impacted teeth. CONCLUSION This study shows a significant cystic alteration in the radiologically normal dental follicles. Clinical and radiographic features alone may not be a reliable indicator of the absence of pathology. Early intervention of impacted teeth will help to reduce morbidity due to the development of pathology. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE This study will help educate patients on the risks of retaining impacted teeth, based on scientific facts, in order to minimize the risks and to assess the correlation of pathologic alterations with the depth of impaction and angular position of the impacted tooth.

Abstract
This systematic review aimed to incorporate published information about synchronous odontogenic tumors (SOTs) with an analysis of the demographic and clinical characteristics from the cases published in the literature. Case reports and case series of SOT were searched in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and EMBASE. A descriptive statistical analysis was performed. Twenty-eight studies comprising 30 cases of SOTs were included. Considering all cases published, SOTs mostly occurred simultaneously in the maxilla and mandible (n = 19/63.3%). Lesions were bifocal in 13 (43.3% of all the 30 cases) and multifocal in 17 cases (56.7% of all the 30 cases). All SOTs available in the literature presented the same type of lesion, and two of them also involved another different SOT (n = 2/6.7% of all the 30 cases). Out of all published cases, the most frequent SOTs in the literature were odontomas (n = 10/33.3% of all the 30 cases), squamous odontogenic tumors (OTs) (n = 8/26.7% of all the 30 cases), calcifying epithelial OTs (n = 8/26.7% of all the 30 cases), and adenomatoid OTs (n = 2/6.7% of all the 30 cases). Considering all SOTs cases included, the overall recurrence was 13.3%. Inside a subgroup of the lesion, synchronous calcifying epithelial OT presented the highest (25%). Five cases (16.7% of all the 30 cases) had a previously associated syndrome, with two cases of Schimmelpenning syndrome being reported. Among published SOTs, odontomas were the most common. All SOTs available in the scientific literature showed the same type of OT and mainly affected both jaws simultaneously. Only a few of these cases were associated with a syndrome.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the appearance, histopathological features, and recurrence of odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) from a large single institute registry over a 36-year period. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 226 cases of OKC were identified in 174 patients over a 36-year period in a single institute in Southwestern Finland. Histological specimens were re-evaluated. The patient's age, sex, location, recurrence, and histopathological features of the OKC were the study variables. RESULTS OKCs occurred more frequently in men, the mean age was 46 years, and the most frequent site was the lower jaw. Recurrence rate was 21%. Histopathologically, inflammation was present in 95% and satellite cysts in 10% of cases. In patients diagnosed with satellite cysts, OKC recurred in 50% of cases, while the corresponding figure for patients without satellite cysts was 17%. CONCLUSIONS Compared with the literature, patients were older and inflamed cysts were found more frequently. Satellite cysts occurred only in association with chronic inflammation. Based on the results, regular radiographic evaluation is important among patients aged 10-29 years to detect OKCs and to treat them before enlargement, infection, and inflammation. Satellite cysts should be reported and may be a sign of increased risk of OKC recurrence.

Abstract
PURPOSE Oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs) adjacent to the mandible or with clinically suspected bone infiltration are surgically treated either with marginal or segmental resections. This retrospective study compared both resections regarding local recurrence and lymph node recurrence or secondary lymph node metastases. METHODS All consecutive primary OSCC cases between January 2007 and December 2015 that underwent mandibular marginal or segmental resection were included. Rates of local and lymph node recurrences or secondary metastases and possible risk factors such as tumor localization according to Urken's classification were recorded. RESULTS In total, 180 patients with 85 marginal (group I) and 95 segmental (group II) mandibular resections were analyzed. The local recurrence rates were comparable between the groups (28.2% vs. 27.4%; p = 0.897). Lymph node recurrences or secondary metastases were higher in group I (9.4% (n = 8) vs. 6.2% (n = 6); p = 0.001). Tumor localization appears to affect the outcomes. Significantly fewer local and lymph node recurrences/metastases were found for Urken's classification SB and S calculated by two-proportion z-test (p = 0.014 and 0.056, respectively). Local recurrences mostly emerged from soft tissues, which should be resected more radically than the bones. CONCLUSION While bone infiltration appears technically well controllable from an oncologic point of view, local recurrences and lymph node recurrences/metastases remain an issue. Regular clinical aftercare with imaging is crucial to detect recurrences.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Recently, single-photon emission CT/CT (SPECT/CT) plays an important role in assessing patients with medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). The aim of this study was to investigate maximum and mean standardized uptake values (SUVs) of MRONJ with bone SPECT/CT, especially comparison of mandibular pathologies, control and temporomandibular joints. METHODS 61 mandibular patients with MRONJ who underwent bone SPECT/CT were included in this study. The maximum and mean SUVs of the lesion, right and left sides of the lesion, opposite side of the lesion as control, right and left temporomandibular joints were analyzed using a workstation and software. The SUVs of MRONJ were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance with Tukey's honestly significant difference test. Patient characteristics with MRONJ and SUVs were analyzed using Mann-Whitney U test. P-values less than 0.05 were considered to indicate statistical significance. RESULTS The maximum and mean SUVs for opposite side of the lesions (4.4 ± 2.0 and 1.8 ± 0.7) were significantly lower than those for mandibular lesions (18.3 ± 8.1 and 6.3 ± 2.8), right side of the lesions (8.1 ± 3.9 and 2.9 ± 1.3) and left side of the lesions (8.1 ± 3.9 and 2.8 ± 1.4), respectively. The maximum and mean SUVs for right and left sides of the lesions, and opposite side of the lesions, right and left temporomandibular joints were not significant difference. Furthermore, the maximum SUVs of the mandibular lesions were a significant difference for age and staging. CONCLUSIONS The maximum and mean SUVs with SPECT/CT can be useful in the quantitative management of MRONJ patients.

Abstract
Background Extraskeletal osteosarcoma, unlike skeletal osteosarcoma, is a rare malignant mesenchymal tumor with a soft tissue primary that has been reported to occur in a variety of soft tissues. Case Description The case is a 14-year-old, unneutered male Miniature Pinscher, weighing 6.7 kg, who had been treated medically for more than 5 years with a management strategy of puncture extirpation of a salivary gland cyst in the mandible; 1 month earlier, the fluid retention could not be removed, and after a computerized tomography scan showed no lesion in the mandible adjacent to the mass lesion, surgical resection was performed. Conclusion Previous reports of extraskeletal osteosarcoma from the salivary glands in dogs have been rare. However, treatment of a salivary gland cyst in the mandible by long-term puncture extirpation may be a potential predisposing factor for the development of extraskeletal osteosarcoma around the mandible.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Granular Cell Odontogenic Fibroma (GCOF) is a rare odontogenic neoplasm reported over time with different names. The purpose of this study is to review all available data on the GCOF in the scientific literature, with a summary of all reported cases and a report of a new case. METHODS This review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. An electronic search was performed up to November 2022. RESULTS Thirty-nine studies reporting fifty-three cases were included. GCOF is a rare neoplasm among the odontogenic tumors, with a higher prevalence in women of the middle-aged and white population. This lesion occurs mostly on the posterior region of the mandible. Furthermore, based on clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic features, conservative treatment was the most reported choice with recurrence reported in two cases. CONCLUSION GCOF remains controversial due to the still unsolved histogenesis.

Abstract
The management of horizontally fully edentulous atrophic ridges is a common problem in dental implantology. This case report describes an alternative modified two-stage presplitting technique. The patient was referred for an implant-supported rehabilitation of their edentulous mandible. CBCT scans showed a mean available bone width of about 3 mm. At the first stage, four linear corticotomies were performed using a piezoelectric surgical device. At the second surgical stage 4 weeks later, bone expansion was performed, and four implants were placed in the interforaminal area. The healing process was uneventful. No fractures of the buccal wall and no neurologic lesions were observed. Postoperative CBCT scans showed a mean bone width gain of about 3.7 mm. Implants were uncovered 6 months after the second surgery, and 1 month later, a fixed provisional screw-retained prosthesis was delivered. This approach could be used as a reconstructive technique that avoids using grafts and reduces treatment times, possible complications, postsurgical morbidity, and costs by exploiting the patient's native bone as much as possible. Considering the limitations of a case report, randomized controlled clinical trials are needed to confirm the results and validate this technique.

Abstract
This study aims to investigate the bone regeneration effect of bovine hydroxyapatite-processed biomaterials Bone-XB and S1-XB in a beagle mandibular defect model. A total of four saddle-type critical sizes (15 mm × 10 mm) bone defects are created in each dog: two defects in the left mandible and two defects in the right mandible. The defect control (DC) group is kept unfilled, and the other three defects are filled with three different biomaterials as follows: positive control Bio-Oss (Bio-Oss group), Bone-XB (XB group), and S1-XB (S1-XB group). Bone regeneration is evaluated by radiography, micro-computed tomography, and histological analysis. It is revealed that Bone-XB and S1-XB significantly increase newly formed bone, defect filling percentage, and bone healing score compared to the DC group, which is confirmed by bone microstructure augmentation (bone volume/total volume, trabecular number, and trabecular thickness). Interestingly, no significant differences are observed between the Bone-XB, S1-XB, and Bio-Oss groups. It is suggested that Bone-XB or S1-XB stimulates bone regeneration demonstrated by the increase in newly formed bone and bone microstructure, thereby improving bone defect filling, which is equivalent to the Bio-Oss. Therefore, bovine hydroxyapatite-processed Bone-XB or S1-XB can be considered effective biomaterials for correcting critical-size bone defects or fractures.

Abstract
The second most frequent craniomaxillofacial congenital deformity is hemifacial microsomia (HFM). Patients often accompany short mandible, ear dysplasia, facial nerve, and soft tissue dysplasia. The etiology of HFM is not fully understood. To organize the possible up-to-date information on the etiology, craniofacial phenotypes, and therapeutic alternatives in order to fully comprehend the HFM. Reviewing the potential causes, exploring the clinical features of HFM and summarizing the available treatment options. Vascular malformation, Meckel's cartilage abnormalities, and cranial neural crest cells (CNCCs) abnormalities are three potential etiology hypotheses. The commonly used clinical classification for HFM is OMENS, OMENS-plus, and SAT. Other craniofacial anomalies, like dental defects, and zygomatic deformities, are still not precisely documented in the classification. Patients with moderate phenotypes may not need any treatment from infancy through adulthood. However, patients with severe HFM require to undergo multiple surgeries to address facial asymmetries, such as mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO), autologous costochondral rib graft (CCG), orthodontic and orthognathic treatment, and facial soft tissue reconstruction. It is anticipated that etiology research will examine the pathogenic mechanism of HFM. A precise treatment for HFM may be possible with thoroughly documented phenotypes and a pathogenic diagnosis.

Abstract
PURPOSE The objective of the present research is to describe the histologic features of the bone regenerated by means of negative pressure (sugosteogenesis) in a group of patients diagnosed with odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) who underwent active decompression and distraction sugosteogenesis (ADDS) at our institution. MATERIALS AND METHODS The authors designed a retrospective case series study. The population included patients with a histologic diagnosis of odontogenic keratocyst in whom active decompression and distraction sugosteogenesis followed by enucleation was performed. All patients were seen and followed from July 2019 to January 2021. The investigation was approved by the Institutional Review Board, and it observed the Declaration of Helsinki on medical protocol. Variables of this study included age, gender, anatomic location (mandible or maxilla), and histologic characteristics of the bone regenerated by means of negative pressure. Histologic features were defined as being consistent or inconsistent with viable mature bone. RESULTS Bone biopsies of 6 patients were considered. In total, 83.33% of patients were males and 16.66% females. One hundred percent of the bone samples subjected to negative pressure showed features of viable mature bone. CONCLUSIONS In this study, the histological features of the bone subjected to negative pressure demonstrated the normal characteristics of the mature, normal bone.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recently, a new odontogenic tumor has been described, the so-called adenoid ameloblastoma (AdAM). The aim of this review was to determine the clinical and imaging features of AdAM and to describe its main histopathological findings. METHODS The systematic review included published cases with a diagnosis of AdAM in the gnathic bones, which had sufficient clinical, imaging, and histopathological data to confirm its diagnosis. The following histopathological diagnostic criteria were adopted: presence of ameloblastoma-like components, duct-like structures, spiral cellular condensations, and a cribriform architecture. RESULTS Fifteen articles, corresponding to 30 cases of AdAM, were selected. Most cases affected men (63.3%), with a slight preference for the mandible (16:14) and the posterior region of gnathic bones was the most commonly affected site. The mean age at diagnosis was 40.8 years. Clinically, the lesions usually presented as a swelling (53.3%) and, radiographically, as a well-defined radiolucency (33.4%). Surgical resection (40%) was the most frequently adopted treatment and recurrence occurred in 30% of cases. Microscopic examination showed cribriform areas in most AdAM cases (93.3%); duct-like structures and spiral cellular condensations were seen in 100% of the cases. CONCLUSION The small number of reported cases, the existence of erroneous diagnoses, and the adoption of initial conservative management make it difficult to determine whether AdAM has a higher risk of recurrence or more aggressive biological behavior than conventional ameloblastomas.

Abstract
Horizontal and vertical ridge augmentation via the bone shell technique provides predictable outcomes. The external oblique ridge is the most-used donor site for bone plate harvesting, followed by the mandibular symphysis. The lateral sinus wall and the palate have also been described as alternative donor sites. This preliminary case series reports a bone shell technique that used the coronal segment of the knife-edge ridge as a bone shell in five consecutive edentulous patients (20 sites) with severe mandibular horizontal ridge atrophy and adequate ridge height. The follow-up period was 1 to 4 years. The average horizontal bone gains at 1 mm and 5 mm below the newly formed ridge crest were 3.6 ± 0.76 mm and 3.4 ± 0.92 mm, respectively. Ridge volume was sufficiently restored in all patients to enable implant placement in a staged approach. In 2 of the 20 sites, additional hard tissue grafts were required at implant placement. The advantages of utilizing the relocated crestal ridge segment are as follows: The donor and recipient sites are the same, no major anatomical structures are compromised, periosteal releasing incisions and flap advancement are not required for primary wound closure, and the risk of wound dehiscence is minimized due to reduced muscle tension.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Odontogenic carcinosarcoma (OCS) is an exceptionally rare malignant mixed odontogenic neoplasm, which mostly arises from recurrent benign odontogenic tumour that undergoes malignant transformation. METHODS A literature review was conducted using the keyword of "Odontogenic carcinosarcoma" and all relevant articles were screened. The data collected include demographic profile (age, gender), clinical information (symptoms, location, size), radiologic features, histopathological examination, management, recurrence, metastases, and survival status. RESULTS A total of 17 OCS cases including a new case from our hospital. The incidence of OCS was highest in the third decades of life with predilection for male and posterior region of mandible. Clinically, patients may present with swelling and neurological symptoms. Radiographic examination often showed radiolucency with ill-defined border. This tumour demonstrates an aggressive behaviour with reported cases of distant metastases to the lung, lymph nodes, rib, and pelvis. Here, we report an interesting case of OCS in a 38-year-old man with a previous diagnosis of ameloblastoma. The patient was diagnosed with ameloblastoma but refused surgical intervention and returned after 10 years with rapidly enlarging mass on the right side of mandible. Microscopically, the lesion appears as biphasic odontogenic tumour with malignant cytological features seen in both epithelium and mesenchymal components. The spindle to round mesenchymal tumour cells were only positive for vimentin. Ki67 proliferation index was high in both epithelium and mesenchymal components. CONCLUSION This case showed the tendency of untreated ameloblastoma to undergo malignant changes in the long term.

Abstract
Inflammatory lesions such as osteomyelitis of the jaw may share some of the radiographic features of malignancy; however, a demonstrable dental cause for it usually exists. In addition, inflammatory lesions generally stimulate a sclerotic bone reaction, which is uncommon in malignancy. The imaging modality of choice for aiding in the differential diagnosis is computed tomography imaging because of its ability to clearly delineate sequestra and periosteal new bone formation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Coronoid process hyperplasia (CPH) of the mandible can lead to restricted mouth opening and maxillofacial deformities, which have been hypothesized to be closely associated with genetics. This study investigated the relationship between congenital CPH and TGFB3 mutation in a family of patients with CPH. STUDY DESIGN A limited mouth opening proband with CPH underwent whole-exome gene sequencing in November 2019, and the results confirmed compound heterozygous mutations in the TGFB3 gene. Subsequently, clinical imaging and genetic testing were performed on 10 other individuals in his family. RESULTS A total of 9 people in this family have CPH. Among them, 6 have the same exon compound heterozygous mutation sites of the TGFB3 gene (chr14-76446905 and chr14-76429713), accompanied by homozygous or heterozygous mutations in the 3'untranslated region (3'UTR) of the TGFB3 gene (chr14:76429555). The other 3 individuals have a homozygous mutation in the 3'untranslated region of the TGFB3 gene. CONCLUSION The heterogeneous compound mutation of the TGFB3 gene or the homozygous mutation of 3'UTR of the TGFB3 gene may be correlated with CPH. In addition, the specifically related mechanism needs to be confirmed by further genetic animal experiments.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Minipigs present advantages for studying oral bone regeneration; however, standardized critical size defects (CSD) for alveolar bone have not been validated yet. The objectives of this study are to develop a CSD in the mandibular alveolar bone in Aachen minipigs and to further investigate the specific role of periosteum. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three female Aachen minipigs aged 17, 24, and 84 months were used. For each minipig, a split-mouth design was performed: an osteotomy (2 cm height × 2.5 cm length) was performed; the periosteum was preserved on the left side and removed on the right side. Macroscopic, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), microcomputed tomography (µCT), and histological analyses were performed to evaluate the bone defects and bone healing. RESULTS In both groups, spontaneous healing was insufficient to restore initial bone volume. The macroscopic pictures and the CBCT results showed a larger bone defect without periosteum. µCT results revealed that BMD, BV/TV, and Tb.Th were significantly lower without periosteum. The histological analyses showed (i) an increased osteoid apposition in the crestal area when periosteum was removed and (ii) an ossification process in the mandibular canal area in response to the surgical that seemed to increase when periosteum was removed. CONCLUSIONS A robust model of CSD model was developed in the alveolar bone of minipigs that mimics human mandibular bone defects. This model allows to further investigate the bone healing process and potential factors impacting healing such as periosteum. CLINICAL RELEVANCE This model may be relevant for testing different bone reconstruction strategies for preclinical investigations.

Abstract
Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common tumor of the kidney. Although RCC often metastasizes to other organs, metastasis to the head and neck region is rare, and metastasis to the mandible is very unusual. Given the fact that metastasis of primary neoplasms is not always predictable, it is essential to rule out metastatic carcinoma in jaw lesions. We herein report a rare presentation of metastasis of RCC to the mandible, in which the metastatic lesion in the oral cavity was found first, followed by the primary lesion, in a 22-year-old girl who suffered from pain in the left temporomandibular joint on mouth opening and hypoesthesia of the left chin, left lower lip, and left lower gum.
