Abstract
Objective: Reproductive events have been linked with increased cardiovascular risk in women, but whether they are associated with pre-clinical peripheral arterial disease (PAD) has been understudied. We evaluated associations between reproductive factors and later-life ankle-brachial index (ABI), femoral artery intima-media thickness (fIMT), and femoral plaques. Methods: Cross-sectional analysis of 707 multiethnic women who participated in a follow-up exam of the San Diego Population Study in 2007-2011. To assess associations between reproductive factors (age at menarche, parity, age at menopause, surgical menopause, hormone therapy) with ABI, and Doppler ultrasound measurements of common and superficial fIMT, linear regression was used; for femoral plaque presence, logistic regression was used. Models were adjusted for age, race/ethnicity, and cardiometabolic factors. We tested interactions of reproductive factors with menopause type (natural vs. surgical). Results: Women were on average 71 years old, and 56% were non-Hispanic White. Reproductive factors were not associated with fIMT, femoral plaque presence, or ABI. There were significant interactions between menopause type (surgical vs. natural) and oral contraceptive use (-β: 0.04, p = 0.03) for ABI, as well as between menopause type and parity (β: 0.11, p = 0.05) and age at menopause (β: 0.001, p = 0.05) for fIMT. Among women with natural menopause, oral contraceptive use was associated with higher ABI (β: 0.03, p = 0.007) and older age at natural menopause was related to greater fIMT (β: 0.009, p = 0.06). Among women with surgical menopause, nulliparity was marginally associated with greater fIMT (β: 0.33, p = 0.07). Conclusions: Reproductive history may not be independently associated with later-life lower extremity atherosclerosis in women. Studies are necessary to confirm findings and examine pregnancy-related exposures in relation to pre-clinical PAD.

Abstract
The review describes the fitness and health effects of recreational football in women aged 18-65 years. The review documents that 2 × 1 h of recreational football training for 12-16 weeks causes marked improvements in maximal oxygen uptake (5-15%) and myocardial function in women. Moreover, mean arterial blood pressure was shown to decrease by 2-5 mmHg in normotensive women and 6-8 mmHg in hypertensive women. This review also show that short-term (< 4 months) and medium-term (4-16 months) recreational football training has major beneficial impact on metabolic health profile in women, with fat losses of 1-3 kg and improvements in blood lipid profile. Lastly, 2 × 1 h per week of recreational football training for women elevates lower extremity bone mineralisation by 1-5% and whole-body bone mineralization by 1-2% within 4-12-month interventions. These training adaptations are related to the high heart rates, high number of fast runs, and multiple changes of direction and speed occurring during recreational football training for untrained women. In conclusion, regular small-sided football training for women is an intense and versatile type of training that combines elements of high-intensity interval training (HIIT), endurance training and strength training, thereby providing optimal stimuli for cardiovascular, metabolic and musculoskeletal fitness. Recreational football, therefore, seems to be an effective tool for prevention and treatment of lifestyle diseases in young and middle-aged women, including hypertension, type 2 diabetes and osteopenia. Future research should elucidate effects of football training for elderly women, and as treatment and rehabilitation of breast cancer patients and other women patient groups.

Abstract
Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TC) occurs predominantly in postmenopausal women, suggesting a possible role of reproductive and hormonal factors in the pathophysiology of this condition. Yet reproductive characteristics of women with TC have received limited attention. This prospective case-control study sought to explore reproductive characteristics associated with TC. Incident TC cases and myocardial infarction (MI) controls were recruited among consecutive women presenting at the emergency departments of 2 large medical centers in Massachusetts and Connecticut. Female healthy controls were recruited from a registry of research volunteers. Information about reproductive history was collected 1 month after discharge using standardized questionnaires completed during phone interviews. Linear and logistic regression models were used to estimate associations with reproductive factors. From March 2013 to October 2015, 209 women were screened for eligibility and 107 (45 TC, 32 MI, and 30 healthy controls) were enrolled. Conditions uniquely associated with TC were a history of irregular menses (adjusted OR, TC vs MI 8.30; 95% CI 1.01 to 69.18), number of pregnancies (adjusted β coefficient 0.69; SE 0.35, p = 0.05), and use of post-menopausal hormone replacement therapy (OR 5.79; CI 1.20 to 28.02). We did not find associations with history of infertility, breastfeeding, hysterectomy or oophorectomy, oral contraceptive use, and age at menopause. In conclusion, our findings suggest that premenopausal reproductive factors may play an important role in the onset of TC at a later age. These results need to be confirmed in future studies with larger populations.

Abstract
Men tend to develop cardiovascular disease (CVD) earlier in life than women. Whether this difference is attributable only to gender is a matter of debate. The purpose of this study was to evaluate gender differences in cardiovascular risk in a large cohort of asymptomatic men and women and explore gender-related risk in prespecified risk factor subgroups. We investigated 14,966 asymptomatic men and women free of diabetes, hypertension, or ischemic heart disease who were annually screened. The primary end point of the present study was the occurrence of ischemic or cerebrovascular disease as composite end point. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression modeling was used to assess the gender difference regarding CVD and to examine the association between CVD risk factors and gender. Mean age of the study population was 47 ± 10 years and 30% were women. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that at 6.2 ± 3.9 years' follow-up, the rate of CVD events was 6.1% among men compared with 1.8% among women (log-rank p <0.001). Consistently, multivariate analysis demonstrated that male gender was independently associated with a significant threefold increased risk for development of CVD events (hazard ratio 3.05, CI 2.25 to 4.14). The CVD risk associated with male gender was consistent in each risk subset analyzed, including older age, low high-density lipoprotein, impaired fasting glucose, and positive family history for ischemic heart disease (all p values for gender-by-risk factor interactions <0.05). Higher performance on treadmill test had a protective effect regarding CVD development in both men and women. In conclusions, healthy middle-aged men experienced increased risk for the development of CVD events compared with women independently of traditional CVD risk factors. However, better exercise capacity is associated with a protective effect.
