Abstract
BACKGROUND Recurrent tracheoesophageal fistula (rTEF) is a well-known complication after surgery of EA, occurring in roughly 3-10% of the patients. Recent studies have highlighted safety and efficacy of endoscopic management of recurrent TEF. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of chemocauterization with trichloroacetic acid (TCA) in rTEF and congenital tracheoesophageal fistula (cTEF). METHODS Retrospective chart review of consecutive patients with recurrent or congenital TEF who underwent endoscopic chemo-cauterization between 2018 and 2022 at a tertiary center. Children diagnosed with TEF who underwent primary or secondary endoscopic treatment were included. Median follow up time was 19 months for rTEF and 33 months for cTEF. RESULTS During the study period, 18 patients were treated endoscopically by chemocatuerization with TCA at our institution. Treatment of recurrent TEF was successful in 13 of 14 patients (93%) Treatment of congenital TEF was successful in 2 of 4 patients (50%). In 14 patients, closure was seen after 1-2 treatments. There were no serious adverse reactions or complications to the endoscopic treatment of TEF. CONCLUSION Endoscopic chemocauterization is a minimal invasive technique with low morbidity and high success rate and may be considered as primary treatment for recurrent TEF. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE III.

Abstract
This case report details the emergency management and successful surgical repair of a tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) in a newborn delivered by lower segment cesarean section. Despite immediate crying after birth, the neonate's distress was evident, with an Apgar score of 4, prompting an urgent referral to the Neonatal ICU (NICU). Diagnostic investigations, including ultrasonography and two-dimensional echocardiography (2D Echo), revealed associated anomalies, such as a patent ductus arteriosus, arterial septal defect, and a TEF. An anaesthetist was urgently involved due to postnatal desaturation, leading to challenging intubation and surgical repair performed under general anaesthesia, which involved separating the trachea from the oesophagus. Postoperative imaging confirmed the successful closure of the fistulous connection. This case highlights the significance of prompt diagnosis, collaborative management, and surgical intervention in optimising outcomes for neonates with complex congenital anomalies like TEF.

Abstract
Esophageal atresia (EA) is the most common malformation of the upper gastrointestinal tract. The estimated incidence of EA is 1 in 3500 births. EA is more frequently observed in boys and in twins. The exact cause of isolated EA remains unknown; a multifactorial etiology, including epigenetic gene expression modifications, is considered. The study included six pairs of twins (three pairs of monozygotic twins and three pairs of dizygotic twins) in which one child was born with EA as an isolated defect, while the other twin was healthy. DNA samples were obtained from the blood and esophageal tissue of the child with EA as well as from the blood of the healthy twin. The reduced representation bisulfite sequencing (RRBS) technique was employed for a whole-genome methylation analysis. The analyses focused on comparing the CpG island methylation profiles between patients with EA and their healthy siblings. Hypermethylation in the promoters of 219 genes and hypomethylation in the promoters of 78 genes were observed. A pathway enrichment analysis revealed the statistically significant differences in methylation profile of 10 hypermethylated genes in the Rho GTPase pathway, previously undescribed in the field of EA (ARHGAP36, ARHGAP4, ARHGAP6, ARHGEF6, ARHGEF9, FGD1, GDI1, MCF2, OCRL, and STARD8).

Abstract
Objectives Tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) is a congenital disorder that presents as a surgical emergency in neonates. In regions where neonatal intensive care unit facilities and resources are inadequate and skilled personnel are scarce, not extubating neonates on table, contributes to mortality. Our aim was to assess and compare the on-table extubation rate, extubation time, and postoperative pain scores between opioid and opioid-free anesthesia techniques in neonates undergoing surgical repair of TEF. Methods We conducted a prospective, single-blind, randomized trial over 18 months between January 2021 and June 2022 in Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi on 60 full-term neonates scheduled for TEF surgeries randomly allocated to two groups according to the mode of analgesia administered. Group O were given fentanyl injection 1 µg/kg intravenous (IV) loading dose with IV injection. acetaminophen at 7.5 mg/kg and top-up of 0.25 µg/kg fentanyl IV si opus sit. Group NO were given pre-surgical local infiltration and intercostal block with 0.25% and 0.5% bupivacaine, respectively, with IV acetaminophen at 7.5 mg/kg. Results Mean age in days, gender distribution, and weight in both groups were statistically comparable. The difference in the number of neonates extubated on table was statistically significant (p =0.002) in group NO compared to group O. Lower mean extubation time was seen in group NO (9.0 min 40.0 secs±3.0 min 3.0 secs) compared to group O (16.0 min 45.0 secs±8.0 min 5.0 secs) (p < 0.001). There was a statistically significant (p =0.010) lower Neonatal Infant Pain Scale score in group NO with mean and SD as 1.8±0.8 compared with group O, 2.5±1.1 at 90 min. Conclusions In neonates undergoing TEF repair, opioid-free anesthesia is a safe and effective method, providing a better extubation rate, faster time to extubation, and better postoperative pain control.

Abstract
The objective was to determine the prevalence of oesophageal atresia (OA) and describe the characteristics of OA cases diagnosed before the first year of life, born between 2007 and 2019, and residents in the Valencian Region (VR), Spain. Live births (LB), stillbirths (SB), and termination of pregnancy for fetal anomaly (TOPFA) diagnosed with OA were selected from the Congenital Anomalies population-based Registry of VR (RPAC-CV). The prevalence of OA per 10,000 births with 95% confidence interval was calculated, and socio-demographic and clinical variables were analyzed. A total of 146 OA cases were identified. The overall prevalence was 2.4/10,000 births, and prevalence by type of pregnancy ending was 2.3 in LB and 0.03 in both SB and TOPFA. A mortality rate of 0.03/1000 LB was observed. A relationship was found between case mortality and birth weight (p-value < 0.05). OA was primarily diagnosed at birth (58.2%) and 71.2% of the cases were associated with another congenital anomaly, mainly congenital heart defects. Significant variations in the prevalence of OA in the VR were detected throughout the study period. In conclusion, a lower prevalence in SB and TOPFA was identified compared to EUROCAT data. As several studies have identified, an association between OA cases and birth weight was found.

Abstract
Objective Esophageal atresia with or without tracheoesophageal fistula (EA/TEF) has a reported incidence of 1 in 3500 live births and requires intensive care and surgery. To evaluate the prevalence of a molecularly confirmed genetic etiology of EA/TEF in a level IV neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), focusing on genetic evaluation, diagnostic yield, and clinical outcomes of these neonates. Study design A retrospective cohort study over a period of seven years was performed for all patients admitted with a diagnosis of EA/TEF. Automated data was extracted for demographic information and manual extraction was done to evaluate the frequency of associated anomalies, type of genetic evaluations and diagnoses, and outcomes at NICU discharge. Results Sixty-eight infants met the inclusion criteria. The majority were male (n=42; 62%), born at >37 weeks' gestation (n=36; 53%), and had EA with distal TEF (n=54; 79%). Most (n=53; 78%) had additional associated congenital anomalies, but only 47 (69%) patients had a genetics evaluation performed and genetic testing was sent for 44 (65%) of those patients. The most common genetic testing performed was chromosomal microarray analysis (n=40; 59%), followed by chromosome analysis (n=11; 16%), and whole exome/genome sequencing (n=7; 10%). Five unique genetic diagnoses including CHARGE Syndrome, Fanconi Syndrome, EFTUD2-related mandibulofacial dysostosis, and two different chromosomal deletion syndromes were made for a total of nine (13%) patients in our cohort. The cohort suffered a high rate of morbidity and mortality during their NICU stay with important differences noted in isolated vs non-isolated EA/TEF. Twelve infants (18%) died prior to NICU discharge. Of those surviving, 40 (71%) infants had a primary repair, 37 (66%) infants required G or GJ feedings at NICU discharge, and eight (14%) patients were discharged on some type of respiratory support. Conclusion In this high-risk cohort of EA/TEF patients cared for at a quaternary NICU, a majority were non-isolated and had some form of a genetic evaluation, but a minority underwent exome or genome sequencing. Given the high prevalence of associated anomalies, high mortality, and genetic disease prevalence in this cohort, we recommend standardization of phenotyping and genetic evaluation to allow for precision care and appropriate risk stratification.

Abstract
VACTERL (vertebral defects, anal atresia, cardiac defects, tracheoesophageal fistula, renal anomalies, and limb abnormalities) association is a condition defined by having at least three of the following congenital malformations: vertebral defects, anal atresia, cardiac defects, tracheoesophageal fistula, renal anomalies, and limb abnormalities. While diagnosing the VACTERL association is rare, the conditions that make up the VACTERL core-component features among other congenital abnormalities are even more unique. We present a case of a 34-week-old premature infant with trisomy 21 in addition to esophageal atresia, tracheoesophageal fistula, laryngeal cleft, vascular ring, Hirschsprung’s disease, atrioventricular canal defect, ventricular septal defect, and other related conditions diagnosed at birth. To our knowledge, this case represents the first of its kind in relation to the constellation of anomalies diagnosed in one individual at birth of which may or may not be related to Down syndrome, and the associated interventions necessary to continue postnatal living.

Abstract
Fetal gastrointestinal tract obstruction (GITO) is the most frequently encountered gastrointestinal defect in the prenatal period. This study aimed to investigate the genetic disorders and pregnancy outcomes of fetal GITO. We reviewed data from 70 pregnancies that were referred for invasive prenatal testing because of fetal GITO. According to the level of obstruction, they were classified into esophageal atresia/stenosis, duodenal atresia/stenosis, jejunal or ileal atresia/stenosis, or anal atresia. Traditional karyotyping was performed on all the 70 pregnancies, and chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) was performed on 32 of them in parallel. Traditional karyotyping revealed twelve (17.1%) chromosomal abnormalities, including 11 cases of trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), and one case of a supernumerary marker chromosome related to Cat eye syndrome. According to the absence or presence of other ultrasound anomalies, they were categorized into isolated GITO (n = 36) and non-isolated GITO (n = 34). The rate of chromosomal abnormalities in the non-isolated GITO pregnancies was significantly higher than that in the isolated GITO pregnancies (29.4 vs. 5.5%, p < 0.05); the survival rate in the isolated group was significantly higher than that in the non-isolated group (67.6 vs. 34.4%, p < 0.05). Among the 32 cases where CMA was performed, an additional one (3.1%) copy number variant with clinical significance was noted in a fetus with normal karyotype. The microduplication on 7q12 was considered to be the genetic etiology of duodenal stenosis, although it was inherited from a phenotypically normal mother. Our study supports the strong association between Down syndrome and fetal GITO, especially duodenal stenosis. Our findings suggested that the risk of chromosomal abnormalities was increased when GITO was accompanied by other ultrasound anomalies; thus, chromosomal abnormalities and fetal anatomy should be carefully evaluated for pregnancy management of fetal GITO.

Abstract
Tracheoesophageal Fistula (TOF) is a congenital anomaly for which the cause is unknown in the majority of patients. OA/TOF is a variable feature in many (often mono-) genetic syndromes. Research using animal models targeting genes involved in candidate pathways often result in tracheoesophageal phenotypes. However, there is limited overlap in the genes implicated by animal models and those found in OA/TOF-related syndromic anomalies. Knowledge on affected pathways in animal models is accumulating, but our understanding on these pathways in patients lags behind. If an affected pathway is associated with both animals and patients, the mechanisms linking the genetic mutation, affected cell types or cellular defect, and the phenotype are often not well understood. The locus heterogeneity and the uncertainty of the exact heritability of OA/TOF results in a relative low diagnostic yield. OA/TOF is a sporadic finding with a low familial recurrence rate. As parents are usually unaffected, de novo dominant mutations seems to be a plausible explanation. The survival rates of patients born with OA/TOF have increased substantially and these patients start families; thus, the detection and a proper interpretation of these dominant inherited pathogenic variants are of great importance for these patients and for our understanding of OA/TOF aetiology.

Abstract
Fanconi anemia is a genetic syndrome clinically characterized by congenital malformations that affect several human systems, leads to progressive bone marrow failure and predisposes an individual to cancer, particularly in the urogenital area as well as the head and neck. It is commonly caused by the biallelic compromise of one of 22 genes involved in the FA/BRCA repair pathway in most cases. The diagnosis is based on clinical suspicion and confirmation using genetic analysis, where the chromosomal breakage test is considered the gold standard. Other diagnostic methods used include western blotting, multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification and next-generation sequencing. This genetic condition has variable expressiveness, which makes early diagnosis difficult in certain cases. Although early diagnosis does not currently allow for improved cure rates for this condition, it does enable healthcare professionals to perform a specific systematic follow-up and, if indicated, a bone marrow transplantation that improves the mobility and mortality of affected individuals. The present review article is a theoretical revision of the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations and diagnosis methods intended for different specialists and general practitioners to improve the diagnosis of this condition.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Esophageal atresia (EA) is a congenital anomaly, presenting multifactorial etiology. Swallowing problems and gastroesophageal reflux disease may accompany EA, which have adverse effects on oral health. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this descriptive study, intraoral examination of the children with repaired EA and of the dental patients without systemic/chronic disease was performed. Dental caries, dental erosion, and halitosis status were evaluated using the International Caries Detection and Evaluation System II, and the Basic Erosive Wear Examination indices as well as the Halimeter, respectively. RESULTS There were 19 (n = 12 male; n = 7 female) case subjects and 16 (n = 10 male; n = 6 female) control subjects whose age ranged between 14 and 72 months. Among cases, 15 children had dental caries (78.9%; initial caries n = 4, moderate caries n = 4, and extensive caries n = 7). Of the controls, 13 had dental caries (81.2%; initial caries n = 5, moderate caries n = 5, and extensive caries n = 3). Although the median scores of decayed, missing, filled teeth (dmft) and decayed, missing, filled surfaces (dmfs)-for primary dentition-were not statistically significantly different between two groups, both dmft and dmfs were found to be higher among the case subjects (p = 0.172 for dmft; p = 0.230 for dmfs). Furthermore, six children with repaired EA had dental abnormalities (in shape, number, or calcification) and six children with repaired EA had dental erosion. The Halimeter measurement was performed for five case children of whom three had oral malodor, and for seven control children of whom two had oral malodor. CONCLUSION Regular dental counseling adopting the multidisciplinary team approach for patients with EA is necessary to ensure better general and oral health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Esophageal atresia (EA) is a congenital malformation affecting 1:3000-4500 newborns. Approximately 15% have a long-gap EA (LGEA), in which case a primary anastomosis is often impossible to achieve. To create continuity of the esophagus patients instead have to undergo lengthening procedures or organ interpositions; methods associated with high morbidity and poor functional outcomes. Esophageal injections of Botulinum Toxin Type A (BTX-A) could enable primary anastomosis and mitigate stricture formation through decreased tissue tension. METHODS AND ANALYSIS In this randomized controlled blinded animal trial, 24 pigs are divided into a long- or short-gap EA group (LGEA and SGEA, respectively) and randomized to receive BTX-A or isotonic saline injections. In the LGEA group, injections are given endoscopically in the esophageal musculature. After seven days, a 3 cm esophageal resection and primary anastomosis is performed. In the SGEA group, a 1 cm esophageal resection and primary anastomosis is performed, followed by intraoperative injections of BTX-A or isotonic saline. After 14 days, stricture formation, presence of leakage, and esophageal compliance is assessed using endoscopic and manometric techniques, and in vivo and ex vivo contrast radiography. Tissue elongation is evaluated in a stretch-tension test, and the esophagus is assessed histologically to evaluate anastomotic healing. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The study complies with the ARRIVE guidelines for animal studies and has been approved by the Danish Animal Experimentation Council. Results will be published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national and international conferences. Abstract
Esophagus and trachea arise from a common origin, the anterior foregut tube. The compartmentalization process of the foregut into the esophagus and trachea is still poorly understood. Esophageal atresia/tracheoesophageal fistula (EA/TEF) is one of the most common gastrointestinal congenital defects with an incidence rate of 1 in 2,500 births. EA/TEF is linked to the disruption of the compartmentalization process of the foregut tube. In EA/TEF patients, other organ anomalies and disorders have also been reported. Over the last two decades, animal models have shown the involvement of multiple signaling pathways and transcription factors in the development of the esophagus and trachea. Use of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to understand organogenesis has been a valuable tool for mimicking gastrointestinal and respiratory organs. This review focuses on the signaling mechanisms involved in esophageal development and the use of iPSCs to model and understand it.

Abstract
Purpose: To identify complications, their incidence and risk factors for their occurrence in patients of esophageal atresia (EA) in the 1st year after discharge following surgery. Materials and Methods: Cases of EA discharged after surgical intervention in the period of July 2011–July 2013 were considered a cohort. All data regarding demographics, investigations, surgical procedure, outcome, and follow-up were recorded. Results: Seventy-six such patients were discharged in the study period, six of whom were lost to follow-up, and hence, seventy patients were included in the study. Of these 70, 48 (69%) had esophageal continuity restored (46 EA + tracheoesophageal fistula [TEF]; 2 pure EA), while 22 (31%) had been diverted (3 pure EA; 8 EA + TEF following major leak; 11 long gap EA + TEF). Risk of developing any complication (except death) was 48/70 (68%; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 57.4–79.7). Twenty-six of 48 patients with esophageal continuity restored, demonstrated narrowing on contrast study (54%; 95% CI = 39.5–68.7) but only 18 of these 48 (37.5%) had dysphagia. Thirty-one of seventy had an episode of lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) (44.2%; 95% CI = 32.3%–56.2%). Poor weight gain was observed in 27/70 (37%), and this was significantly common in diverted patients (63% vs. 25%; P = 0.009). Twenty-one of total 70 (30%) patients died within the 1st year following discharge. Conclusions: Sixty-eight percent of cases developed some complication, while 30% succumbed within the 1st year of life following discharge. The common complications were stricture, LRTI, and poor weight gain. All of these were common in diverted patients.

Abstract
Esophageal atresia (EA) is a congenital anomaly occurring in 2.3 per 10,000 live births. Due to advances in prenatal imaging, EA is more readily diagnosed, but data on the associated genetic diagnoses, other anomalies, and postnatal outcome for fetuses diagnosed prenatally with EA are scarce. We collected data from two academic medical centers (n = 61). Our data included fetuses with suspected EA on prenatal imaging that was confirmed postnatally and had at least one genetic test. In our cohort of 61 cases, 29 (49%) were born prematurely and 19% of those born alive died in the first 9 years of life. The most commonly associated birth defects were cardiac anomalies (67%) and spine anomalies (50%). A diagnosis was made in 61% of the cases; the most common diagnoses were vertebral defects, anal atresia, cardiac anomalies, tracheoesophageal fistula with esophageal atresia, radial or renal dysplasia, and limb anomalies association (43%, although 12% met only 2 of the criteria), trisomy 21 (5%), and CHARGE syndrome (5%). Our findings suggest that most fetuses with prenatally diagnosed EA have one or more additional major anomaly that warrants a more comprehensive clinical genetics evaluation. Fetuses diagnosed prenatally appear to represent a cohort with a worse outcome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients born with esophageal atresia (EA) have a higher incidence of infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS), suggestive of a relationship. A shared etiology makes sense from a developmental perspective as both affected structures are foregut derived. A genetic component has been described for both conditions as single entities and EA and IHPS are variable components in several monogenetic syndromes. We hypothesized that defects disturbing foregut morphogenesis are responsible for this combination of malformations. METHODS We investigated the genetic variation of 15 patients with both EA and IHPS with unaffected parents using exome sequencing and SNP array-based genotyping, and compared the results to mouse transcriptome data of the developing foregut. RESULTS We did not identify putatively deleterious de novo mutations or recessive variants. However, we detected rare inherited variants in EA or IHPS disease genes or in genes important in foregut morphogenesis, expressed at the proper developmental time-points. Two pathways were significantly enriched (p < 1 × 10-5 ): proliferation and differentiation of smooth muscle cells and self-renewal of satellite cells. CONCLUSIONS None of our findings could fully explain the combination of abnormalities on its own, which makes complex inheritance the most plausible genetic explanation, most likely in combination with mechanical and/or environmental factors. As we did not find one defining monogenetic cause for the EA/IHPS phenotype, the impact of the corrective surgery could should be further investigated.

Abstract
Esophageal atresia/tracheoesophageal fistula (EA/TEF) is one of the most common gastrointestinal birth defects. It can occur in isolation or in association with other birth defects or genetic syndromes. We retrospectively reviewed the EA/TEF cases evaluated at Rady Children's Hospital San Diego (San Diego, CA) between 2007 and 2016. Data were collected for 157 patients. The majority of patients (105, 66.8%) had an associated major malformation present, and 52 patients (33.1%) had isolated EA/TEF. The patients with associated malformations were distributed as follows: 16 patients (10.2%) had a known genetic syndrome (the most common being Trisomy 21 in 11 patients); six patients (3.8%) had a suspected genetic syndrome; one patient had a suspected teratogenic syndrome (diabetic embryopathy); 30 patients had VACTERL association (19.1%); 32 patients had a "partial VACTERL" association (only two VACTERL-type defects without other malformation); nine patients (5.7%) had one additional non-VACTERL-type birth defect, two patients had VACTERL-type defects plus auricular malformations; and nine patients (5.7%) were classified as "unknown syndrome." A classification of the patterns of malformation of patients with congenital EA/TEF is proposed based on reviewing the data of this relatively large and phenotypically diverse patient group.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe esophageal atresia mortality rates and their associations in our cohort. STUDY DESIGN Patients with esophageal atresia, managed at The Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne (1980-2018), who subsequently died, were retrospectively identified from the prospective Nate Myers Oesophageal Atresia database. Data collected included patient and maternal demographics, vertebral anomalies, anorectal malformations, cardiovascular anomalies, tracheoesophageal fistula, renal anomalies, and limb defects (VACTERL) associations, mortality risk factors, and preoperative, operative, and postoperative findings. Mortality before discharge was defined as death during the initial admission. RESULTS A total of 88 of the 650 patients (13.5%) died during the study period; mortality before discharge occurred in 66 of the 88 (75.0%); mortality after discharge occurred in 22 of the 88 (25.0%). Common causes of mortality before discharge were palliation for respiratory anomalies (15/66 [22.7%]), associated syndromes (11/66 [16.7%]), and neurologic anomalies (10/66 [15.2%]). The most common syndrome leading to palliation was trisomy 18 (7/66 [10.6%]). Causes of mortality after discharge had available documentation for 17 of 22 patients (77.3%). Common causes were respiratory compromise (6/17 [35.3%]), sudden unexplained deaths (6/17 [35.3%]), and Fanconi anemia (2/17 [11.8%]). Of the patients discharged from hospital, 22 of 584 (3.8%) subsequently died. There was no statistical difference in VACTERL association between mortality before discharge (31/61 [50.8%]) and mortality after discharge (11/20 [55.0%]), nor in incidence of twins between mortality before discharge (8/56 [14.3%]) and mortality after discharge (2/18 [11.1%]). CONCLUSIONS We identified predictors of mortality in patients with esophageal atresia in a large prospective cohort. Parents of children with esophageal atresia must be counselled appropriately as to the likelihood of death after discharge from hospital.

Abstract
Congenital TEFs without esophageal atresia are rare but may occur more frequently than previously documented in literature. Careful history is required to suspect the diagnoses, as most patients will present with coughing associated with solid or liquids, recurrent unexplained pulmonary infections and complaints with eating. Some patients may show signs of chronic airway changes from recurrent aspiration pneumonia at the time of presentation. Diagnosis is challenging, with multiple imaging modalities including x ray, CT scan and esophogram able to identify a fistula. Surgery is required to improve quality of life and prevent chronic airway changes, and most cases repaired have no complications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Esophageal Atresia (EA) is defined as the congenital interruption of the continuity of the esophagus. Pediatric patients also have other congenital conditions, such as Tracheo-Esophageal Fistula (TEF). CASE REPORT A 7-year-old male with TEF referred by a Pediatric Cardiologist, with the principal complaint of "severe and generalized tooth wearing". Considering that the patient was systemically stable, it was decided to perform the oral procedures under local anesthesia and rubber-dam isolation with an antimicrobial prophylaxis regimen. The treatment consisted of the extraction of all maxillary primary incisors and canines and both first molars; in the mandibular arch, only the lower second right molar was extracted, and a distal shoe was placed. Pulpotomies were performed and preformed metallic crowns were placed on the remaining second primary molars, on both lower first molars, and on lower canines and lateral incisors. Finally, a fixed prosthesis was positioned in the upper arch, and cemented through orthodontic bands adapted to both crowned second molars. The patient has been maintained under close medical and dental control. The child showed satisfactory oral conditions, and the vomiting episodes had decreased significantly. CONCLUSIONS Dentists can learn and then participate in the integral health management of infants and young children affected with EA/TEF, particularly those with dental erosion.

Abstract
Current evidence suggests that the aetiology of congenital gastrointestinal (GI) tract atresia is multifactorial, and not based solely on genetic factors. However, there are no established modifiable risk factors for congenital GI tract atresia. We used data from a Japanese nationwide birth cohort study launched in 2011, and examined whether fish consumption in early pregnancy was associated with congenital GI tract atresia. We analysed data of 89 495 women (mean age at delivery=31·2 years) who delivered singleton live births without chromosomal anomalies. Based on the results of the FFQ, we estimated the daily intake of fish and n-3 PUFA consumption in early pregnancy. We defined a composite outcome (oesophageal atresia, duodenal atresia, jejunoileal atresia and/or anorectal malformation) as congenital GI tract atresia. In this population, median fish intake was 31·9 g/d, and seventy-four cases of congenital GI tract atresia were identified. Fish consumption in early pregnancy was inversely associated with the composite outcome (multivariable-adjusted OR for the high v. low consumption category=0·5, 95 % CI 0·3, 1·0). For all the specific types of atresia, decreased OR were observed in the high consumption category, although not statistically significant. Reduced atresia occurrence was observed even beyond the US Food and Drug Administration's recommended consumption of no more than 340 g/week. Also, n-3 PUFA-rich fish and n-3 PUFA consumptions tended to be inversely associated with atresia. Fish consumption in early pregnancy may be a preventive factor for congenital GI tract atresia.

Abstract
Codevelopment of the lungs and heart underlies key evolutionary innovations in the transition to terrestrial life. Cardiac specializations that support pulmonary circulation, including the atrial septum, are generated by second heart field (SHF) cardiopulmonary progenitors (CPPs). It has been presumed that transcription factors required in the SHF for cardiac septation, e.g., Tbx5, directly drive a cardiac morphogenesis gene-regulatory network. Here, we report instead that TBX5 directly drives Wnt ligands to initiate a bidirectional signaling loop between cardiopulmonary mesoderm and the foregut endoderm for endodermal pulmonary specification and, subsequently, atrial septation. We show that Tbx5 is required for pulmonary specification in mice and amphibians but not for swim bladder development in zebrafish. TBX5 is non-cell-autonomously required for pulmonary endoderm specification by directly driving Wnt2 and Wnt2b expression in cardiopulmonary mesoderm. TBX5 ChIP-sequencing identified cis-regulatory elements at Wnt2 sufficient for endogenous Wnt2 expression domains in vivo and required for Wnt2 expression in precardiac mesoderm in vitro. Tbx5 cooperated with Shh signaling to drive Wnt2b expression for lung morphogenesis. Tbx5 haploinsufficiency in mice, a model of Holt-Oram syndrome, caused a quantitative decrement of mesodermal-to-endodermal Wnt signaling and subsequent endodermal-to-mesodermal Shh signaling required for cardiac morphogenesis. Thus, Tbx5 initiates a mesoderm-endoderm-mesoderm signaling loop in lunged vertebrates that provides a molecular basis for the coevolution of pulmonary and cardiac structures required for terrestrial life.

Abstract
We present a case of intractable dysphagia in a 23-year-old female with type 1 esophageal atresia (EA) and subsequent postsurgical refractory esophageal strictures. The patient was referred due to increasing symptomatology and a slight response to balloon dilations. A biodegradable polydioxanone stent (ELLA) was placed, but this did not relieve the dysphagia. After the sequential placement of two siliconated polypropylene stents (Polyflex™, Boston Scientifics), the dysphagia was definitively relieved. To our knowledge, this is the first published case with a full resolution of dysphagia using this strategy in an adult patient.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to define different characteristics of infants with esophageal atresia and correlations with neonatal level of care, morbidity and mortality occurring during hospital stay. METHODS Charts of all newborns with esophageal atresia (EA) admitted to our University NICU between January 2003 and November 2016 were reviewed and subdivided in four groups related to different clinical presentations; EA as an isolated form (A), with a concomitant single malformation (B), as VACTERL association (C), and in the context of a syndrome or an entity of multiple congenital anomalies (D). RESULTS We recruited 67 infants with EA (with or without tracheoesophageal fistula), distributed in groups as follows: A 31.3%, B 16.4%, C 26.8% and D 25.3%. Type of atresia was not statistically different among different groups. Mortality was higher in groups C and D, especially if associated with congenital heart defects. In survivors, we found different auxological evolution and prognostic profiles considering duration in days of invasive mechanical ventilation and total parenteral nutrition, as well as length of stay and corrected gestational age at discharge. CONCLUSIONS In the context of genetic and syndromic entities, subjects with VACTERL association showed a lower mortality rate although a higher and more complex level of intensive care was noted in comparison to infants without VACTERL genetic and syndromic entities.

Abstract
Recent studies report a high incidence of monozygotic twinning in Beckwith–Wiedemann syndrome. A phenotypical discordance in monozygotic twins is rare. Twinning and Beckwith–Wiedemann syndrome show higher incidence in children born after assisted reproductive techniques. We report on the first observation of esophageal atresia and Beckwith–Wiedemann syndrome in one of the naturally conceived discordant monozygotic twins.

Abstract
The objective of the present study is to describe a cohort of complex esophageal atresia and the yield of genetic tests performed for such patients. We selected 45 patients with complex esophageal atresia (EA), namely those having at least one associated anomaly. We reviewed their medical records to assess clinical features, other diagnoses, and genetic investigations. Most of the patients had a diagnosis of VACTERL association (56%) with no genetic variant identified. Interestingly, 5 patients in the cohort (11%) had a right pulmonary hypoplasia or agenesis. A majority of our cohort (73%) had genetic testing; 60% were karyotyped (abnormal in 4 of the 27 patients tested), 31% had aCGH (abnormal in 1 of the 14 patients tested), and 31% had diepoxybutane (DEB) testing for Fanconi anemia (abnormal in 2 of the 14 patients tested). One patient had exome sequencing studies, but no candidate gene was identified. Various anomalies were associated with EA, and overall a genetic variant could be identified in 7 of the 33 patients tested. Chromosomal studies such as aCGH and chromosomal breakage studies should be considered, and their yield varied between 7 and 14%. Other genetic investigations such as exome sequencing could possibly have even higher yields but will need to be assessed in a large cohort. Improved genetic diagnoses in EA may improve the management of these patients by directing specific surveillance and management schemes.

Abstract
Despite acute respiratory and chronic respiratory and gastro-intestinal complications, most infants and children with a history of oesophageal atresia / trachea-oesophageal fistula [OA/TOF] can expect to live a fairly normal life. Close multidisciplinary medical and surgical follow-up can identify important co-morbidities whose treatment can improve symptoms and optimize pulmonary and nutritional outcomes. This article will discuss the aetiology, classification, diagnosis and treatment of congenital TOF, with an emphasis on post-surgical respiratory management, recognition of early and late onset complications, and long-term clinical outcomes.

Abstract
Pathologies that involve the structure and/or function of the esophagus can be life-threatening. The esophagus is a complex organ comprising nonredundant tissue that does not have the ability to regenerate. Currently available interventions for esophageal pathology have limited success and are typically associated with significant morbidity. Hence, there is currently an unmet clinical need for effective methods of esophageal repair. The present article presents a review of esophageal disease along with the anatomic and functional consequences of each pathologic process, the shortcomings associated with currently available therapies, and the latest advancements in the field of regenerative medicine with respect to strategies for esophageal repair from benchtop to bedside.

Abstract
Esophageal atresia (EA) is a congenital defect of the esophagus involving the interruption of the esophagus with or without connection to the trachea (tracheoesophageal fistula [TEF]). EA/TEF may occur as an isolated anomaly, may be part of a complex of congenital defects (syndromic), or may develop within the context of a known syndrome or association. The molecular mechanisms underlying the development of EA are poorly understood. It is supposed that a combination of multigenic factors and epigenetic modification of genes play a role in its etiology. The aim of our work was to assess the human gene expression microarray study in esophageal tissue samples. Total RNA was extracted from 26 lower pouches of esophageal tissue collected during thoracoscopic EA repair in neonates with the isolated (IEA) and the syndromic form (SEA). We identified 787 downregulated and 841 upregulated transcripts between SEA and controls, and about 817 downregulated and 765 upregulated probes between IEA and controls. Fifty percent of these genes showed differential expression specific for either IEA or SEA. Functional pathway analysis revealed substantial enrichment for Wnt and Sonic hedgehog, as well as cytokine and chemokine signaling pathways. Moreover, we performed reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction study in a group of SHH and Wnt pathways genes with differential expression in microarray profiling to confirm the microarray expression results. We verified the altered expression in SFRP2 gene from the Wnt pathway as well as SHH, GLI1, GLI2, and GLI3 from the Sonic hedgehog pathway. The results suggest an important role of these pathways and genes for EA/TEF etiology.

Abstract
Esophageal atresia (EA) is defined as a discontinuity of the lumen of the esophagus repaired soon after birth. Dysphagia is a common symptom in these patients, usually related to stricture, dysmotility or peptic esophagitis. We present 4 cases of patients with EA who complained of dysphagia and the diagnosis of Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) was made, ages ranging from 9 to 16 years. Although our patients were on acid suppression years after their EA repair, they presented with acute worsening of dysphagia. Esophogastroduodenoscopy and/or barium swallow did not show stricture and biopsies revealed elevated eosinophil counts consistent with EoE. Two of 4 patients improved symptomatically with the topical steroids. It is important to note that all our patients have asthma and 3 out of 4 have tested positive for food allergies. One of our patients developed recurrent anastomotic strictures that improved with the treatment of the EoE. A previous case report linked the recurrence of esophageal strictures in patients with EA repair with EoE. Once the EoE was treated the strictures resolved. On the other hand, based on our observation, EoE could be present in patients without recurrent anastomotic strictures. There appears to be a spectrum in the disease process. We are suggesting that EoE is a frequent concomitant problem in patients with history of congenital esophageal deformities, and for this reason any of these patients with refractory reflux symptoms or dysphagia (with or without anastomotic stricture) may benefit from an endoscopic evaluation with biopsies to rule out EoE.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of esophageal atresia/stenosis and small intestinal atresia/stenosis in Nagano, Japan, together with associated anomalies, prenatal diagnosis and survival. METHODS A population-based cohort study of the prevalence of esophageal atresia/stenosis and small intestinal atresia/stenosis was conducted in Nagano in January 1993-December 2011. The Mann-Whitney test, χ(2) test and Kruskal-Wallis test were used to compare variables. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS In total, 74 cases of esophageal atresia/stenosis and 87 cases of small intestinal atresia/stenosis (31 duodenal, 56 jejuno-ileal) were identified. Prevalences were 1.97 for esophageal atresia/stenosis and 2.23 for small intestinal atresia/stenosis (0.83 for duodenal atresia/stenosis and 1.49 for jejuno-ileal atresia/stenosis) per 10,000 births, respectively. The prevalence of esophageal atresia/stenosis increased significantly from 1993-2001 to 2002-2011 (relative risk [RR], 1.6), as did the prevalences of duodenal atresia/stenosis (RR, 2.2) and jejuno-ileal atresia/stenosis (RR, 3.1). Chromosomal anomalies, particularly trisomy 21, were seen significantly more often in association with duodenal atresia/stenosis (55%) than with esophageal atresia/stenosis (28%, P < 0.01) or jejuno-ileal atresia/stenosis (2%, P < 0.01). The proportion of patients associated with prenatally diagnosed chromosomal anomaly was higher compared to postnatal diagnosis (P < 0.01) in the esophageal atresia/stenosis group. CONCLUSION The prevalence of esophageal and small intestinal atresia/stenosis increased significantly from 1993-2001 to 2002-2011. Prenatally diagnosed esophageal atresia/stenosis is associated with multiple anomalies, particularly chromosomal anomalies, compared to other small intestine atresia/stenosis.

Abstract
The uptake of the two essential ingredients for life, oxygen and nutrients, occurs primarily through the oral cavity, but these two lifelines need to be separated with high accuracy once inside the body. The two systems, the gas exchange pulmonary system and the gastro-intestinal feeding system, are derived from the same primitive embryonic structure during development, the foregut, which need to be separated before birth. In certain newborns, this separation occurs not or insufficiently, leading to life threatening conditions, sometimes incompatible with life. The development of the foregut, trachea and lungs is influenced and coordinated by a multitude of signaling cascades and transcription factors. In this review, we will highlight the development of the foregut and pulmonary system and focus on associated congenital abnormalities in light of known genetic alterations with specific attention to the transcription factor SOX2.

Abstract
Biallelic mutations of the SLC25A13 gene result in citrin deficiency (CD) in humans. Neonatal intrahepatic cholestasis caused by citrin deficiency (NICCD) is the major CD phenotype in pediatrics; however, knowledge on its genotypic and phenotypic characteristics remains limited. The present study aimed to explore novel molecular and clinical characteristics of CD. An infant suspected to have NICCD as well as her parents were enrolled as the research subjects. SLC25A13 mutations were investigated using various methods, including cDNA cloning and sequencing. The pathogenicity of a novel mutation was analyzed bioinformatically and functionally with a yeast model. Both the infant and her father were heterozygous for c.2T>C and c.790G>A, while the mother was only a c.2T>C carrier. The novel c.790G>A mutation proved bioinformatically and functionally pathogenic. The infant had esophageal atresia and an accessory hepatic duct, along with bile plug formation confirmed by laparoscopic surgery. However, the father seemed to be healthy thus far. The findings of the present study enrich the genotypic and phenotypic characteristics of CD patients, and provided clinical and molecular evidence suggesting the possible non-penetrance of SLC25A13 mutations and the likely involvement of this gene in primitive foregut development during early embryonic life.

Abstract

Abstract
Esophageal atresia (EA) is a rare congenital malformation (1 in 2,500 to 3,500 births). Prenatal diagnosis (PN) is particularly interesting allowing search for associated malformations related to worse prognosis forms (reference ultrasound, MRI and amniocentesis) and planning the birth in an adapted medico-surgical center. Diagnosis of EA is usually suspected because of indirect and non-specific signs: association of polyhydramnios and absent or small stomach bubble. The visualization in ultrasound or MRI of cervical or thoracic fluid image corresponding to the expansion of the bottom of upper esophageal ("pouch sign") increases the specificity of diagnosis. However, prenatal diagnosis remains difficult and less than 50 % of EA are diagnosed prenatally. Biochemical analysis could improve these results. If EA is confirmed at birth, surgical management consists in a primary end-to-end anastomosis in first days of life, or in two-steps surgery if the defect is too large. Although current prognosis of EA is good, frequency of surgical complications and esophageal lesions secondary to gastroesophageal reflux justify a systematic and multidisciplinary extended follow-up.

Abstract
Esophageal atresia with or without tracheoesophageal fistula (EA/TEF) is a relatively common birth defect often associated with additional congenital anomalies such as vertebral, anal, cardiovascular, renal and limb defects, the so-called VACTERL association. Yet, little is known about the causal genetic factors. Rare case reports of gastrointestinal anomalies in children with triple X syndrome prompted us to survey the incidence of structural and numerical changes of chromosome X in patients with EA/TEF. All available (n=269) karyotypes of our large (321) EA/TEF patient cohort were evaluated for X-chromosome anomalies. If sufficient DNA material was available, we determined genome-wide copy number profiles with SNP array and identified subtelomeric aberrations on the difficult to profile PAR1 region using telomere-multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification. In addition, we investigated X-chromosome inactivation (XCI) patterns and mode of inheritance of detected aberrations in selected patients. Three EA/TEF patients had an additional maternally inherited X chromosome. These three female patients had normal random XCI patterns. Two male EA/TEF patients had small inherited duplications of the XY-linked SHOX (Short stature HOmeoboX-containing) locus. Patients were small for gestational age at birth (<P5) and had additional, mostly VACTERL associated, anomalies. Triple X syndrome is rarely described in patients with EA/TEF and no duplications of the SHOX gene were reported so far in these patients. As normal patterns of XCI were seen, overexpression of X-linked genes that escape XCI, such as the SHOX gene, could be pathogenic by disturbing developmental pathways.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Esophageal atresia with/without trachea-esophageal fistula (EA/TEF) denotes a spectrum of severe congenital malformations. The aim of this systematic study was to determine both the recurrence risk for EA/TEF, and the risk for malformations of the VATER/VACTERL association spectrum, in first-degree relatives of patients with isolated EA/TEF. METHODS A total of 108 unrelated patients with isolated EA/TEF were included. These individuals had 410 first-degree relatives including 194 siblings. The presence of EA/TEF and malformations of the VATER/VACTERL association spectrum in relatives was systematically assessed. Data from the EUROCAT network were used for comparison. RESULTS None of the first-degree relatives displayed any form of EA/TEF. In two families, a first-degree relative presented with malformations from the VATER/VACTERL association spectrum. However, no increase in the risk for malformations of the VATER/VACTERL association spectrum was found compared with the control cohort (p = 0.87). In three families, one more distantly related relative presented with EA/TEF. CONCLUSION In contrast to previous studies, our results suggest a very low recurrence risk for isolated EA/TEF and/or for malformations of the VATER/VACTERL association spectrum among first-degree relatives.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Perinatal care of esophageal atresia (EA) may be improved by prenatal diagnosis. Ultrasound findings (polyhydramnios and/or nonvisualization of fetal stomach) lead to a detection rate of ~50%. An amniotic fluid (AF) biochemical pattern characterized by high total protein, γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGTP), and normal l-leucine-aminopeptidase (AMP) leads to a 100% detection rate. The aim of this study was to explain this specific pattern. METHODS On the basis of enzyme activities assay, the following four objectives were sought: (i) comparing AF markers between EA and other digestive tract atresias, (ii) determining local GGTP synthesis in the esophagus (immunohistobiochemistry), (iii) determining the presence of a specific AF-AMP activity inhibitor, and (iv) comparing AF-AMP and AF-GGTP half-lives. RESULTS The AF-EA pattern was similar to that observed in upper duodenal atresia (above the Oddi sphincter). No local synthesis of GGTP was observed in the esophagus. No AF-AMP activity inhibitor was found. AF-GGTP had a longer half-life than AF-AMP. CONCLUSION Due to the swallowing anomaly observed in EA, GGTP and AMP values physiologically observed at 18 wk will decrease on the basis of the half-lives of markers, with a flat slope for GGTP and a sharp slope for AMP, therefore explaining the differences observed in the AF-EA pattern.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Esophageal atresia is a major congenital malformation characterized by a complete interruption of the esophageal continuity. It is frequently observed in associations and syndromes. As an isolated finding, it has a multifactorial etiology whose genetic factors are poorly known. Recently, the GST family, especially the GSTM1 null genotype (but not the GSTP1 polymorphism I105V), has been associated with esophageal atresia. These enzymes play a role in phase II detoxification of xenobiotics. Here we present the clinical and molecular findings observed in a patient suggesting that the loss of the GSTP1 allele might predispose to this malformation. CASE We describe a patient presenting with esophageal atresia associated with developmental delay and facial dysmorphism, whose mother used tobacco and alcohol during the first 2 months of her pregnancy. Microdeletion/microduplication analysis was performed using comparative genomic hybridization and a 180K Agilent array. It detected a de novo 2 Mb chromosome 11q13.1.q13.2 deletion. CONCLUSION The deleted chromosomal segment includes the GSTP1 gene. We hypothesize that the deletion of one GSTP1 allele (an isoform highly expressed in embryonic tissues), associated with specific environmental factors, such as tobacco and alcohol, could cause the esophageal atresia observed in our patient.

Abstract
L'atrésie de l'oesophage est une des malformations digestive les plus fréquentes en néonatologie. Il existe 5 types anatomiques, selon la présence et le siège de la fistule oeso-trachéale. Le diagnostic anténatal est difficile. A la naissance, le diagnostic est suspecté en salle de travail, devant l’échec du passage systématique d'une sonde digestive jusque dans l'estomac. Des trouble de la déglutition, une hyper sialorrhée, une détresse respiratoire sont ensuite retrouvés. Une fistule oeso-trachéale peut être isolée et suspectée devant des épisodes de cyanose et de dyspnée lors des tétées ou en cas de survenue d'une pneumopathie d'inhalation. Dans notre cas, nous avons observé une microcéphalie primaire. Une association microcéphalie et malformation digestive et des membres a été décrite sous le nom de syndrome de Feingold. Chez notre patient, aucune malformation des membres n'a été observée.

Abstract
VACTERL association (sometimes termed "VATER association" depending on which component features are included) is typically defined by the presence of at least three of the following congenital malformations, which tend to statistically co-occur in affected individuals: Vertebral anomalies, Anal atresia, Cardiac malformations, Tracheo-Esophageal fistula, Renal anomalies, and Limb abnormalities. Although the clinical criteria for VACTERL association may appear to be straightforward, there is wide variability in the way clinical geneticists define the disorder and the genetic testing strategy they use when confronted with an affected patient. In order to describe this variability and determine the most commonly used definitions and testing modalities, we present the results of survey responses by 121 clinical geneticists. We discuss the results of the survey responses, provide a literature review and commentary from a group of physicians who are currently involved in clinical and laboratory-based research on VACTERL association, and offer an algorithm for genetic testing in patients with this association.

Abstract
Isolated tracheoesophageal ("H-type") fistula is a relatively uncommon congenital anomaly that can be difficult to identify and, at times, challenging to repair. We present a very unusual case of an infant with 2 distinct H-type tracheoesophageal fistulas (TEFs) identified and repaired in 1 operation. A newborn male infant presented with coughing with feeds. Contrast esophagram demonstrated an intrathoracic H-type fistula without esophageal atresia. In the operating room, rigid bronchoscopy was performed, and a second TEF was identified in the cervical region. A separate balloon catheter was placed in each fistula. The intrathoracic fistula was repaired through a thoracotomy incision, and the more proximal fistula was repaired through a cervical incision. Each repair was uncomplicated, and recovery was uneventful. Double H-type tracheoesophageal appears to be extremely rare. This case underscores the importance of searching for a second fistula by bronchoscopy before undertaking definitive repair of a TEF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of esophageal atresia (EA) has been shown to vary across different geographical settings. Investigation of geographical differences may provide an insight into the underlying etiology of EA. METHODS The study population comprised infants diagnosed with EA during 1998 to 2007 from 18 of the 46 birth defects surveillance programs, members of the International Clearinghouse for Birth Defects Surveillance and Research. Total prevalence per 10,000 births for EA was defined as the total number of cases in live births, stillbirths, and elective termination of pregnancy for fetal anomaly (ETOPFA) divided by the total number of all births in the population. RESULTS Among the participating programs, a total of 2943 cases of EA were diagnosed with an average prevalence of 2.44 (95% confidence interval [CI], 2.35-2.53) per 10,000 births, ranging between 1.77 and 3.68 per 10,000 births. Of all infants diagnosed with EA, 2761 (93.8%) were live births, 82 (2.8%) stillbirths, 89 (3.0%) ETOPFA, and 11 (0.4%) had unknown outcomes. The majority of cases (2020, 68.6%), had a reported EA with fistula, 749 (25.5%) were without fistula, and 174 (5.9%) were registered with an unspecified code. CONCLUSIONS On average, EA affected 1 in 4099 births (95% CI, 1 in 3954-4251 births) with prevalence varying across different geographical settings, but relatively consistent over time and comparable between surveillance programs. Findings suggest that differences in the prevalence observed among programs are likely to be attributable to variability in population ethnic compositions or issues in reporting or registration procedures of EA, rather than a real risk occurrence difference. The improvement of survival observed over the previous two decades is multifactorial and largely attributable to advances in neonatal intensive care, neonatal anesthesia, ventilatory and nutritional support, antibiotics, early surgical intervention, surgical materials and techniques. Indeed, mortality is currently limited to those cases with coexisting severe life-threatening anomalies. The diagnosis of EA is most commonly made during the first 24 h of life but may occur either antenatally or may be delayed. The primary surgical correction for EA and TEF is the best option in the absence of severe malformations. There is no ideal replacement for the esophagus and the optimal surgical treatment for patients with long-gap EA is still controversial. The primary complications during the postoperative period are leak and stenosis of the anastomosis, gastro-esophageal reflux, esophageal dysmotility, fistula recurrence, respiratory disorders and deformities of the thoracic wall. Data regarding long-term outcomes and follow-ups are limited for patients following EA/TEF repair. The determination of the risk factors for the complicated evolution following EA/TEF repair may positively impact long-term prognoses. Much remains to be studied regarding this condition. This manuscript provides a literature review of the current knowledge regarding EA.
