Abstract
BACKGROUND Injuries sustained following stingray attacks are at high risk of infection and can progress to serious, debilitating consequences for the patient if not appropriately addressed. Antibiotic treatment of such infections is important to minimise the morbidity experienced by patients. However, antibiotic guidelines relating specific to this patient group are not well established. This study aims to report the experience of a single institution at treating stingray associated wound infections and to review the literature for reported cases. Additionally, we review the microbiological risk in these patients and summarise the literature surrounding antibiotic choice. METHODS A retrospective review of all patients presenting with injuries sustained following stingray attacks was conducted at a single institution. Additionally, a comprehensive literature review was conducted to identify cases of infected stingray associated trauma and review the causative micro-organisms and antibiotics used to treat such infections. RESULTS 22 cases of stingray injuries were identified from a single institution. Of these, eight infections were reported. One case grew a highly resistant Vibrio species. Among the literature, 18 cases of infections were identified many of which led to significant complications for patients. The micro-organisms identified were diverse and there was little consistency among the antibiotic regimens utilised. CONCLUSION Based on the antibiotic susceptibilities of causative bacteria along with extrapolation from recommendations and guidelines identified in the literature, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole appear to be the most appropriate antibiotics choices for prophylaxis or treatment of localised infection. Antibiotic choices for the empiric treatment of systemic infection requires further research and clarification.

Abstract
Injuries caused by freshwater stingray are common in several regions of South America, although they are underreported. The riverside inhabitants are the main victims in the Amazonian and Midwest regions of South America. The fishermen are injured mainly in the new focus of colonization of the rivers by freshwater stingrays. With the increasing population in these regions, where freshwater stingrays are found, there has been a significant increase in injuries within the general population. The highest increase occurred among tourists from other regions, where these animals are not known, when visiting these areas. The envenomations from the stingray causes prolonged and intense pain, both local and regionally. Generally these are associated with other local inflammatory manifestations, such as swelling and erythema. The injury often progresses to necrosis and it is considered potentially tetanogenic. A secondary infection is also a frequent local complication and most frequently is caused by Aeromonas species, usually Aeromonas hydrophila. Herein we report the first 2 cases of tetanus after freshwater stingray injuries: a 51-year-old men who had tetanus and recovered without sequel and the second a 67-year-old men who had severe tetanus and a deep, necrotizing soft-tissue infection with sepsis, septic shock and evolution to death.

Abstract
A review of the recent advances in microfluidics based systems for the monitoring of waterborne pathogens is provided in this article. Emphasis has been made on existing, commercial and state-of-the-art systems and research activities in laboratories worldwide. The review separates sample processing systems and monitoring systems, highlighting the slow progress made in automated sample processing for monitoring of pathogens in waterworks and in the field. Future potential directions of research are also highlighted in the conclusions.

Abstract
Transmission of M. ulcerans, the etiological agent of Buruli ulcer, from the environment to humans remains an enigma despite decades of research. Major transmission hypotheses propose 1) that M. ulcerans is acquired through an insect bite or 2) that bacteria enter an existing wound through exposure to a contaminated environment. In studies reported here, a guinea pig infection model was developed to determine whether Buruli ulcer could be produced through passive inoculation of M. ulcerans onto a superficial abrasion. The choice of an abrasion model was based on the fact that most bacterial pathogens infecting the skin are able to infect an open lesion, and that abrasions are extremely common in children. Our studies show that after a 90d infection period, an ulcer was present at intra-dermal injection sites of all seven animals infected, whereas topical application of M. ulcerans failed to establish an infection. Mycobacterium ulcerans was cultured from all injection sites whereas infected abrasion sites healed and were culture negative. A 14d experiment was conducted to determine how long organisms persisted after inoculation. Mycobacterium ulcerans was isolated from abrasions at one hour and 24 hours post infection, but cultures from later time points were negative. Abrasion sites were qPCR positive up to seven days post infection, but negative at later timepoints. In contrast, M. ulcerans DNA was detected at intra-dermal injection sites throughout the study. M. ulcerans was cultured from injection sites at each time point. These results suggest that injection of M. ulcerans into the skin greatly facilitates infection and lends support for the role of an invertebrate vector or other route of entry such as a puncture wound or deep laceration where bacteria would be contained within the lesion. Infection through passive inoculation into an existing abrasion appears a less likely route of entry.

"Noodling" is an ancient form of hand fishing recently gaining in popularity as a hobby and sport. We present one of the first case reports of a noodling injury in an adolescent male seeking to land a large catfish, and also review the literature on catfish-related injuries.

Abstract
Skin and soft tissue infections are among the most common reasons for people to seek medical advice. They also represent one of the most common indications for antimicrobial therapy and account for approximately 7-10% of hospitalisations in North America. Although non-limb and non-life threatening infections may be treated on an out-patient basis with oral antibiotics, patients with more serious acute skin and soft tissue infections may require admission to hospital for management; this decision is especially true if the infection is rapidly progressive. We provide a concise overview of the differential diagnosis and approach to management of community-acquired rapidly progressive skin and soft tissue infections.
