Ionic Strength of Methylcellulose-Based Films: An Alternative for Modulating Mechanical Performance and Hydrophobicity for Potential Food Packaging Application. POLYSACCHARIDES 2022. Abstract
The growing environmental concern with the inappropriate disposal of conventional plastics has driven the development of eco-friendly food packaging. However, the intrinsic characteristics of polymers of a renewable origin, e.g., poor mechanical properties, continue to render their practical application difficult. For this, the present work studied the influence of ionic strength (IS) from 0 to 500 mM to modulate the physicochemical properties of methylcellulose (MC). Moreover, for protection against biological risks, Nisin-Z was incorporated into MC’s polymeric matrices, providing an active function. The incorporation of salts (LiCl and MgCl2) promoted an increase in the equilibrium moisture content in the polymer matrix, which in turn acted as a plasticizing agent. In this way, films with a hydrophobic surface (98°), high true strain (85%), and low stiffness (1.6 mPa) can be manufactured by addition of salts, modulating the IS to 500 mM. Furthermore, films with an IS of 500 mM, established with LiCl, catalyzed antibacterial activity against E. coli, conferring synergism and extending protection against biological hazards. Therefore, we demonstrated that the IS control of MC dispersion presents a new alternative to achieve films with the synergism of antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria in addition to flexibility, elasticity, and hydrophobicity required in various applications in food packaging.

Abstract
Due to growing antimicrobial resistance to antibiotics, novel methods of treatment of infected wounds are being searched for. The aim of this research was to develop a composite wound dressing based on natural polysaccharides, i.e., gellan gum (GG) and a mixture of GG and alginate (GG/Alg), containing lipid nanoparticles loaded with antibacterial peptide-nisin (NSN). NSN-loaded stearic acid-based nanoparticles (NP_NSN) were spherical with an average particle size of around 300 nm and were cytocompatible with L929 fibroblasts for up to 500 µg/mL. GG and GG/Alg sponges containing either free NSN (GG + NSN and GG/Alg + NSN) or NP_NSN (GG + NP_NSN and GG/Alg + NP_NSN) were highly porous with a high swelling capacity (swelling ratio above 2000%). Encapsulation of NSN within lipid nanoparticles significantly slowed down NSN release from GG-based samples for up to 24 h (as compared to GG + NSN). The most effective antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive Streptococcus pyogenes was observed for GG + NP_NSN, while in GG/Alg it was decreased by interactions between NSN and Alg, leading to NSN retention within the hydrogel matrix. All materials, except GG/Alg + NP_NSN, were cytocompatible with L929 fibroblasts and did not cause an observable delay in wound healing. We believe that the developed materials are promising for wound healing application and the treatment of bacterial infections in wounds.

Abstract
In this work, the feasibility of antibacterial biopolymeric films containing carvacrol (CRV) and a nisin commercial formulation (Nis) for potential food packaging applications was investigated. As polymer matrix, a commercial biodegradable polymer formulation of Mater-Bi (MB) was chosen due to its significant food packaging applications. CRV and Nis were chosen due to their well-established antibacterial properties and their potential synergistic effect. MB/CRV, MB/Nis, and MB/CRV/Nis systems were produced by melt mixing and compression molding. The mechanical properties of the films were evaluated by tensile tests. Differential scanning calorimetry was assessed aiming at investigating the effect of the two compounds and their mixture on the thermal properties of MB. The release profile of CRV and Nis from the MB-based films was evaluated in water at 4 °C by UV-Vis measurements and it was fitted with a power-law model. The antibacterial activity of MB-based films was tested in vitro against Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella enteritidis, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus. The combination of CRV and Nis strongly affected the properties of the MB-based films and ensured higher antibacterial activity if compared to MB/CRV and MB/Nis systems.

Abstract
Poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) is a biocompatible, biodegradable, and semi-crystalline polymer with numerous applications including food packaging, medical implants, stents, tissue engineering scaffolds, etc. Hydroxyapatite (HA) is the major component of natural bone. Conceptually, combining PLLA and HA could produce a bioceramic suitable for implants and bone repair. However, this nanocomposite suffers from poor mechanical behavior under tensile strain. In this study, films of PLLA and HA were prepared with small amounts of nontoxic WS2 nanotubes (INT-WS2). The structural aspects of the films were investigated via electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman microscopy, and infrared absorption spectroscopy. The mechanical properties were evaluated via tensile measurements, micro-hardness tests, and nanoindentation. The thermal properties were investigated via differential scanning calorimetry. The composite films exhibited improved mechanical and thermal properties compared to the films prepared from the PLLA and HA alone, which is advantageous for medical applications.

Abstract
Abstract
This study investigated the production of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) nanofibers containing cypress (CUP) essential oil (EO) via electrospinning. The nanofibers were produced from polymer solution prepared with different percentages of cypress EO. Cypress EO-containing PLA nanofibers were characterized and some mechanical and thermal properties were examined using thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and dynamic mechanical analysis. The thermal stability of the nanofibers was reduced depending on the percentage of the cypress EO. As the ratio of the cypress EO to polymer matrices was increased, it was observed that the glassy transition temperatures of the nanofibers decreased and their flexibility increased. The T
g value was determined to be 53.74°C for the neat PLA nanofiber, while 51.83°C for the PLA-CUP nanofiber (containing 15% cypress EO). According to the results of releasing trial, the increased amount of cypress EO resulted in less cypress EO releasing from polymer matrices. The nanofibers were observed to exhibit antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The inhibition zone diameter of the nanofibers containing 10% cypress EO was 20 mm for S. aureus and 16 mm for E. coli, while 10 mm in the presence of Kanamycin.

Abstract
Cushioning and antibacterial packaging are the requirements of the storage and transportation of fruits and vegetables, which are essential for reducing the irreversible quality loss during the process. Herein, the composite of carboxymethyl nanocellulose, glycerin, and acrylamide derivatives acted as the shell and chitosan/AgNPs were immobilized in the core by using coaxial 3D-printing technology. Thus, the 3D-printed cushioning-antibacterial dual-function packaging aerogel with a shell-core structure (CNGA/C-AgNPs) was obtained. The CNGA/C-AgNPs packaging aerogel had good cushioning and resilience performance, and the average compression resilience rate was more than 90%. Although AgNPs was slowly released, CNGA/C-AgNPs packaging aerogel had an obvious antibacterial effect on E. coli and S. aureus. Moreover, the CNGA/C-AgNPs packaging aerogel was biodegradable. Due to the customization capabilities of 3D-printing technology, the prepared packaging aerogel can be adapted to more application scenarios by accurately designing and regulating the microstructure of aerogels, which provides a new idea for the development of food intelligent packaging.

Abstract
Active composite films were developed by incorporating different concentration of dihydromyricetin (DMY) into konjac glucomannan (KGM)/gellan gum (GG) matrix. Physicochemical, mechanical, released behaviour, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of composite films were investigated. The results from the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated that DMY which well-dispersed in the KGM/GG matrix interacted with matrix through hydrogen bonds. The obtained films presented predominant thermostability, good water resistance property, excellent ultraviolet light barrier ability and sustained controlled release behaviour. In particular, the incorporation of DMY remarkably enhanced the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the films. Overall, the fabricated KGM/GG-DMY composite films have a promising application in the fields of food packaging.

Abstract
The emergence of many new food products on the market with need of consumers to constantly monitor their quality until consuming, in addition to the necessity for reducing food corruption during preservation time, have led to the development of some modern packaging technologies such as intelligent packaging (IP) and active packaging (AP). The benefits of IP are detecting defects, quality monitoring and tracking the packaged food products to control the storage conditions from the production stage to the consumption stage by using various sensors and indicators such as time-temperature indicators (TTIs), gas indicators, humidity sensors, optical, calorimetric and electrochemical biosensors. While, AP helps to increase the shelf-life of products by using absorbing and diffusion systems for various materials like carbon dioxide, oxygen, and ethanol. However, there are some important issues over these emerging technologies including cost, marketability, consumer acceptance, safety and organoleptic quality of the food and emphatically environmental safety concerns. Therefore, future researches should be conducted to solve these problems and to prompt applications of IP and AP in the food industry. This paper reviews the latest innovations in these advanced packaging technologies and their applications in food industry. The IP systems namely indicators, barcoding techniques, radio frequency identification systems, sensors and biosensor are reviewed and then the latest innovations in AP methods including scavengers, diffusion systems and antimicrobial packaging are reviewed in detail.

Abstract
Chitosan is obtained from chitin and considered to be one of the most abundant natural polysaccharides. Due to its functional activity, chitosan has received intense and growing interest in terms of applications for food preservation over the last half-century. Compared with earlier studies, recent research has increasingly focused on the exploration of preservation mechanism as well as the targeted inhibition with higher efficiency, which is fueled by availability of more active composite ingredients and integration of more technologies, and gradually perceived as "chitosan-based biofilm preservation." In this Review, we comprehensively summarize the potential antimicrobial mechanisms or hypotheses of chitosan and its widely compounded ingredients, as well as their impacts on endogenous enzymes, oxidation and/or gas barriers. The strategies used for enhancing active function of the film-forming system and subsequent film fabrication processes including direct coating, bioactive packaging film and layer-by-layer assembly are introduced. Finally, future development of chitosan-based bioactive film is also proposed to broaden its application boundaries. Generally, our goal is that this Review is easily accessible and instructive for whose new to the field, as well as hope to advance to the filed forward.

Abstract
Films were prepared by casting 2% w/v apple pectin, 0.5% w/v low-acyl gellan and 2.2% w/v glycerol as plasticizer. Bioactive film (BF, films with 3912 International Units (IU) nisin/cm2) and control films (CF, films without nisin) were elaborated. The objective was to analyze the release kinetics of nisin from films to a food model, to determine the period of film bioactivity and potential use as antimicrobial packaging. The release of nisin from BF to a food model was determined at 5 °C and 30 °C. The release kinetics of nisin was fitted to the analytical solution of the Fick's second law for an infinite plate. The diffusion coefficients of nisin (D) were 5.22 × 10-14 and 7.36 × 10-14 m2/s for 5 °C and 30 °C, respectively. Besides, both films were characterized in their mechanical properties and gas permeabilities [oxygen (PO2) and water vapour permeability (WVP)]. The mechanical properties were reduced by the nisin incorporation, whereas PO2 was increased, and no significant effect on WVP was observed.

Abstract
Nanocomposite films that were based on furcellaran (FUR) and nanofillers (carbon quantum dots (CQDs), maghemite nanoparticles (MAN), and graphene oxide (GO)) were obtained by the casting method. The microstructure, as well as the structural, physical, mechanical, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties of the films was investigated. The incorporation of MAN and GO remarkably increased the tensile strength of furcellaran films. However, the water content, solubility, and elongation at break were significantly reduced by the addition of the nanofillers. Moreover, furcellaran films containing the nanofillers exhibited potent free radical scavenging ability. FUR films with CQDs showed an inhibitory effect on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The nanocomposite films were used to cover transparent glass containers to study the potential UV-blocking properties in an oil oxidation test and compare with tinted glass. The samples were irradiated for 30 min. with UV-B and then analyzed for oxidation markers (peroxide value, free fatty acids, malondialdehyde content, and degradation of carotenoids). The test showed that covering the transparent glass with MAN films was as effective in inhibiting the oxidation as the use of tinted glass, while the GO and CQDs films did not inhibit oxidation. It can be concluded that the active nanocomposite films can be used as a desirable material for food packaging.

Abstract
AbstractDeveloping more organic nucleating agent with different molecular structure is very instructive to improve the crystallization of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) and explore the crystallization mechanism. In this study, N, N’-sebacic bis(hydrocinnamic acid) dihydrazide (HAD) was synthesized to serve as a nucleating agent for PLLA. The effects of HAD on the non-isothermal crystallization, melting behavior, thermal stability and optical performance of PLLA were investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and light transmittance meter. The melt crystallization behavior showed that HAD was able to promote the crystallization of PLLA via heterogenous nucleation in cooling, and it was found that, upon the cooling of 1°C/min, the incorporation of 1 wt% HAD made the crystallization temperature and non-isothermal crystallization enthalpy increase from 94.5°C and 0.1 J/g to 131.6°C and 48.5 J/g comparing with the pure PLLA. Additionally, the melt crystallization significantly depended on the cooling rate and the final melting temperature. For the cold crystallization, when the nucleation density from HAD and PLLA itself was saturated, the influence of the HAD concentration on the cold crystallization process of the PLLA/HAD samples is negligible. The melting behavior after isothermal or non-isothermal crystallization further confirmed the crystallization accelerating effect of HAD for PLLA, and the appearance of the double melting peaks was attributed to the melting-recrystallization. Unfortunately, the addition of HAD decreased the thermal stability and light transmittance of PLLA.

Abstract
AbstractThe introduction of a nucleating agent in semi-crystalline polymers is a frequently utilized way to improve the crystallization performance, and the use of a nucleating agent has a very great effect on the performance of the polymer in other areas including thermal stability and mechanical properties. In this investigation, barium phenylphosphonate (BaP) was prepared as a crystallization accelerator for Poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA), and the non-isothermal crystallization behavior, thermal stability, and mechanical properties of PLLA modified by BaP were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and electronic tensile testing. Non-isothermal crystallization analysis showed that the BaP could significantly accelerate the crystallization of PLLA, and the non-isothermal crystallization peak shifted to a higher temperature with increasing concentration of BaP, however, the corresponding crystallization peak became wider. XRD results after non-isothermal crystallization confirmed the non-isothermal crystallization DSC results. Additionally, the addition of BaP did not change the crystal form of PLLA. A comparative study on thermal stability indicated that BaP decreased the onset decomposition temperature of PLLA, resulting from the formation of more tiny and imperfect crystals. Whereas the influence of BaP on the thermal decomposition profile of PLLA was negligible. In terms of mechanical properties, the tensile strength and elastic modulus of PLLA/BaP increased compared to the virgin PLLA, unfortunately, the elongation at break decreased.

Abstract
Human safety and well-being is threatened by microbes causing numerous infectious diseases resulting in a large number of deaths every year. Despite substantial progress in antimicrobial drugs, many infectious diseases remain difficult to treat. Antimicrobial polymers offer a promising antimicrobial strategy for fighting pathogens and have received considerable attention in both academic and industrial research. This mini-review presents the advances made in antimicrobial polymers since 2013. Antimicrobial mechanisms exhibiting either passive or active action and polymer material types containing bound or leaching antimicrobials are introduced. This article also addresses the applications of these antimicrobial polymers in the medical, food, and textile industries.

Abstract
AbstractThe goal of this work was to synthesis a novel aromatic multiamide derivative based on 1H-benzotriazole (PB) as an organic nucleating agent for poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA), and investigate the effect of PB on the non-isothermal crystallization, melting behavior and thermal decomposition of PLLA. Here, PB was firstly synthesized through 1H-benzotriazole aceto-hydrazide and terephthaloyl chloride, then PB-nucleated PLLA was fabricated via melt-blending technology at various PB concentration from 0.5 wt% to 3 wt%. Finally, the thermal performances were evaluated through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The high thermal decomposition temperature of PB indicated that PB possessed possibility as a nucleating agent for PLLA, and the non-isothermal crystallization behavior confirmed the crystallization accelerating effectiveness of PB for PLLA. Upon optimum concentration of 2 wt%, the onset crystallization temperature, the crystallization peak temperature and the non-isothermal crystallization enthalpy increased from 101.4°C, 94.5°C and 0.1 J·g-1 to 121.3°C, 115.8°C and 35.1 J·g-1, respectively. In addition, the non-isothermal crystallization behavior was also affected by the cooling rate and the final melting temperature. The melting behavior further evidenced the advanced nucleating ability of PB, and the competitive relationship between PB and the heating rate, the nuclear rate and crystal growth rate. Thermal stability measurement showed that PB with a concentration of 1 wt%–2 wt% could slightly improve the thermal stability of PLLA.

Abstract
Polylactic acid (PLA) is a biodegradable and renewable polymer, which represents a valuable alternative to plastic packaging films, often associated with environmental problems. In this study, we tested the suitability of PLA as a biodegradable packaging film and assessed the antimicrobial activity of lemongrass oil (LO), incorporated into the PLA film in different concentrations. To obtain the optimal physical properties for PLA films, tensile strength, elongation at break, and water vapor permeability were measured under different preparation conditions. In addition, the antimicrobial activity of the LO contained in the PLA film against Listeria monocytogenes was investigated by disc diffusion and viable cell count. Among all concentrations tested, 2% LO was the most suitable in terms of antimicrobial activity and physical properties of the PLA film. Based on these results, we used the PLA film containing 2% LO to pack pork sausages; after 12 d of storage at 4℃, the population of inoculated L. monocytogenes in the sausage samples wrapped with the PLA film containing 2% LO was reduced by 1.47 Log CFU/g compared with the control samples. Our data indicate that PLA films containing 2% LO represent a valuable means for antimicrobial sausage packaging.
